DO NOT USE MEGAUPLOAD! WARNING! STAY AWAY!

I’ve downloaded tons of files from here, and today was a sad one. Megaupload, as we all know, gives popups. They’re usually harmless, but today, one entitled ALERT! injected a keylogger into my computer. Luckily I was on the laptop, and it’s currently being virusscanned off a USBkey. But seriously! Stay away! Boycott Megaupload!

I’ve never had an issue with MegaUpload, though I’m working from a Mac.

Or use Firefox with AdBlock+.

I’ve never seen a single popup on Megaupload when using that.

Neither have I. But a new popup of theirs did the trick.

Megaupload is fine on a mac.

Thanks for the warning. Someone should notify them about this issue, so they can take care of it.

A good AV (Avira) + a decent firewall (Comodo) and no worries.

Plus, I use NoScript + AdBlock Plus with Firefox and that helps to.

You can also use JDownloader, to download without opening the page.

Kid, I don’t know what browser you were using, but it better not have been IE. Note to all users…the only proper use for Internet Explorer (any version really) is either Windows updates in XP, or using it to download Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or Safari. All of these choices are free, and far more secure than IE ever will be.

Another note…run windows update folks. You are not fully secure unless you do. Again, I don’t know what circumstances your system is being run under, but people should be checking for updates at-least once a week to prevent damage. Also, if you’re running XP or Vista, consider upgrading to 7 real soon. It’s a ton better security wise.

Finally, use common sense. Have a good popup blocker on your setup (either the one built-in to the browser or an extension), don’t click on links on any pop-up ad, however, as was the case here, even those steps may not fully protect you. If you choose to engage in dealing with websites that are less than upstanding, than you have to be ready for the consequences. That’s the tradeoff of this sort of thing. Same thing with LimeWire or Bittorrent.

BTW, this all applies to Mac users too. You’re a bit more protected since .exe’s can’t run and there are currently very few Mac viruses out in the wild, but when the day comes that a Mac virus starts to spread, it’ll spread faster than any Windows virus on record because so many Mac users have a false sense of security and think the Mac is unbreakable…it’s not…the day will come…be ready.

I use IE and Megaupload works just fine.

I have never had a problem with MU. I don’t even remember the last time I saw a popup on the sute.

MU is great. Don’t be ridicules.

Megaupload has always been perfect for me.
The problem lies with you alone it seems.

I’m using Firefox, got the same popup myself but AVAST blocked the attempting intrusion onto my computer. Once I closed that window out it stopped.

I think the best thing anyone can do is download Avast. Whenever a site tries to sneak stuff into my computer, Avast rings up like a bat out of hell and my browser is redirected to the "danger screen". ("We’re not going to load this site because it may be harmful to your computer.") Strangely, this has never happened to me with MU. Like Doublehex, I can’t remember the last time I even got a pop-up on that site.

I’ve very rarely had a problem with mega. My advice though, if you’re using Windows use some decent software like Avira or some sort and make sure you don’t use IE. IE is just horrible, it almost seems like it was built on security loop holes, then again Windows in general has always seemed like it was built on security loop holes. Just stick with the latest Firefox release and make sure you use Adblock+. Me personally I use Ubuntu Linux so I have even less worry then even that of Mac users, but for those occasions when I do use Windows I use XP Pro SP2 with just windows firewall, avira and firefox as my browser, I’ve never really had any problems. I’m one of those that doesn’t believe in windows updates, in fact I just shut it off but it’s not a bad idea to do updates.

I used Google Chrome to go to Megaupload once, and it fucked me over pretty hard. Got the Virtumonde virus and nothing would get rid of it, even this program that was made specifically to remove it that everybody said worked when nothing else would. I never had any problem with the site using Firefox or K-meleon, but the one time I went there with Chrome, it eventually led to me reformatting my hard drive.

Agreed. I’ve tried a few and Avast is by far the best I’ve found.
