Seeing as how I’ve never played a FF game, that’s why I’m asking this.
None of them are connected in any way story-wise unless they have the same number. As in Final Fantasy VII had a prequel and two sequels that had the same number (FFVII Crisis Core for example).
You can pick up XIII if you want. Story-wise you won’t be lost. 😀
No, the Final Fantasy games are NOT all linked together storywise. True there are some exceptions as Smarty pointed out regarding The Final Fantasy VII Compilation, but that’s about it.
FFXII, FFT, FFTA and some others are part of the Ivalice Collection, as they’re set on the same world, though at varying times through it’s history.
For more information, go to the Final Fantasy Compendium (http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/) and look around that site. Has a lot of information about crossovers in the games etc.
Final Fantasy games have different strories and characters in every game, unless it is a sequel, spinoff or prequel eg Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII
Thanks for the answer to my question guys. 🙂
But seriously, hardly anyone talks about final fantasy here! I’ve hardly played any! And I don’t like them!
but i suggest you give them at least a try.

That’s what I thought. A lot of the shriners here claim no allegiance to FF at all, but still love posting here. Smarty’s response sort of threw me off a bit.
to me it was because i couldnt download anything withouth being registered.
also, shits and giggles.
I forgot 🙁
do we have a ffs historian?
it turned out massive profits

Actually no. The series began in 1987 as an eponymous video game developed to save Square from bankruptcy; the game was a success and spawned sequels.
Sakaguchi stated that if the game didn’t work out, then it would be Square’s ‘Final’ Fantasy.
exactly
He shouldn’t have left square enix.
You should probably just avoid the whole jRPG genre since it’s not very good.
exactly, sakaguchi was gonna leave square.
he would probably join nintendo (back then)
Just for the record, I love (most) final fantasy games, of course I’m going to play FFXIII. Stick with the General Discussion forum if you don’t like FF.
I also liked Final Fantasy until I realised they aren’t actually all that great.
This is general gaming, by the way. You’re allowed to talk about whatever games you like.

Again though, it’s your opinion they aren’t that great. I think they are.

FFX was pretty linear, but nowhere near as linear as critics/fans have said FFXIII is. A lot of Japanese critics/fans dislike the game a lot. FFX also had sidequests/minigames which FF13 doesn’t have until about ~40 hours in, I hear. You also can’t do anything other than what the game wants you to until that far in.
All I’m saying is it’s probably worth waiting to see how the game is received rather than buy it just because it’s Final Fantasy. This seems like a step down for the series. Well, maybe a step up. FFXII was also really, really awful.
As for FFXII. The story and characters were terrible but I actually really liked it. It was different.

This segway from your post, started with this one:
pretty simple, the first FF on NES was gonna be sakaguchi’s last game, hence the title.
it turned out massive profits
Hence the discussion going off towards Final Fantasy history, instead of the history of Final Fantasy Shrine. So if you want to blame someone for the conversation leaning away from your question, look to CATASTROPHE.
i believe we just got owned
Not really, just the conversation went off on another tangent than what was asked.

I haven’t read all the replys yet but I just had to say, the logic behind this 1st post is hilarious haha.
Good one dickhead.
