Anyone feel like persuading me to get FF13 and FF Versus 13?

I’ve been thinking about getting Final Fantasy XIII AND Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The PS3 version.

Reason?

Mainly because I need more stuff to play. >_>

But… I’m not sure if I should get it or not. V_V

I’m worried this might be HELLISH to beat. >_<

To be honest, at first glance (with what info is known about it and pictures etc) I’m not too fussed over FFXIII. It’s really up to you to decide if you want it or not. No one else can arbitrarily tell you ‘Yes, you HAVE to get this’ or ‘No, avoid this like the plague.’. Use your free choice to decide what to do.

If you’re worried that it’ll be ‘HELLISH to beat’, then look for another game.

you should get it. i hear they’re a great cure for insomnia.

Get Versus. If you’re a fan get them both.

Or you know, get other games to play. If you like RPG’s in general and want one, then don’t bother with FF. Get Dragon Age: Origins.

I’m reading things lately about FFXIII that make me a tad skeptical. Personally, I find XII to be one of the best in the series. It’s not like the others wherein you traversed a large world map by way of land, canoe, chocobo or airship; instead, the whole world itself is your world map. No changing screens for that, nor for battles. Instead, it’s all right there in life-size. The music, the battle system, the characters, pretty much everything just compels me. I dunno about anybody else, but XII and IX grab me the most out of the series, next to IV and VI of course. And as always I must maintain that constant reminder that I cherish each game equally, just not for the same reasons. It just seems to me (so far) that XII and IX have some of the most engrossing sidequests and additional elements that make the games seem that much bigger and more epic than they already are.

Now, if FFXIII is going to break from this trend and go the RE5 route by being essentially 99% linear (or in this case 100%, if what I’ve read is correct), then I may actually be skipping this one. I discriminately decided against XI a long time ago for the sole reason that it would cost money monthly, and at the time I knew nothing of it and thought it was too different to catch my interest. Well, since various members here have shed me all the light I need on it to know that it is in fact one of the most intriguing sounding titles of the series, I know better. But after what I’ve heard about this new installment and its linear nature to the extent that it does indeed stretch, I may simply need to save that 50+ bucks for something else. Sure, it looks amazing. So does RE5, but I honestly don’t feel that I’ll be playing it again after completing it. The first three RE titles, I will forever replay over and over, time and again, with that same feeling I got the first time, every time. The same holds true for every FF from I – XII (and Tactics). They all have that amazingly attractive nature that forces you to keep coming back for more. But nowadays, too many games are all bark no bite. Nothing more than pretty graphics and some cool characters, but no substance to place them amongst. Unfortunately, XIII seems to of this same statistic, and although I’m sure it’s got its strong points, I just really can’t quite hold this game in as much esteem as I can its predecessors. Since this is before even playing it, I can only base my views on speculation. But as it stands, XIII doesn’t look terribly promising to me.

Now, Versus XIII, I know very little about. I think most people do. I can only hold out some hope that it and Agito (which, thankfully, is no longer going to be a mobile phone-only game, but rather a PSP title) can make up for XIII’s pitfalls. If there’s any saving grace at all, it’ll be like X and at least make the linear nature interesting and worth getting through for something.

If you like RPG’s in general and want one, then don’t bother with FF. Get Dragon Age: Origins.

It’s basically true. I’m having way more fun with White Knight Chronicles because I actually feel like I’m playing an RPG. Square seemed to have made XIII to be a pick-up-and-play game that anyone can play, there’s hardly any strategy involved.

Only things I don’t like are; your level is capped until certain bosses/points in the game and also most buildings in towns etc. are innaccesible (but that is to stay true to the story)

The more I hear about this game, the more I dislike it. It’s all very well reading about reviews, looking at screenshots etc… but the gaming media, either magazines or websites, are biased towards AAA games and give them glowing marks or whatnot.

Honestly… I don’t really care about FFXIII much now, to the point I’m even considering canceling my preorder for it. IDK, I may get it if only to add to my FF Collection, but from what I’ve seen of FFXIII, I’m left feeling ‘Meh’.

Same for me, I don’t have a PS3 yet, and I’m not going to get one just for XIII. But when I do get one (eventually) I’ll pick up XIII for the collection.

All I can say is, XIII is not something I would go out of my way to buy. I think I’ll go the RE5 route and just see if I have a friend who has it (when it comes out) who I can play it with. Or, if what I’ve read is true and they go into a psychotic rage and decide to pitch it, I’ll intervene and offer to take it off their hands, then play it. Either way, it doesn’t seem like something to spend the money on. Such a shame too, because I always thought Square was better than this. Hell, I’ll pick up and play a game that looks like a third-grader drew it, long as the gameplay is fun and its story is appealing.

I find myself buying some games just for the collection. I bought Crystal chronicles ring of fates lol, that was a bad move. But I won’t sell it because it’s FF.

EDIT: But we are all judging prematurely. If you’re not sure rent it. I’m hoping it won’t dissapoint though.

Never have picked up a Crystal Chronicles title :O Are they any good? I dunno what it was that turned me off about them, but I just never bothered with them for some stupid reason.

Also, totally random and off-topic, but I’ve found Mystic Quest to be alright; not the best, but from what I’ve seen of it, it’s not terrible.

No, crystal chronicles games are not good. They have a degree of charisma about them but that is it. Ring of fates has rubbish graphics like FFIII and the gameplay is boring as hell. I think I played 3 or 4 hours before I gave up. The original was just as bad. Haven’t played echoes of time or the new wii one though.

Dang :O Glad I never bothered then. I’ve really only ever bothered with the numbered titles anyway. In fact, my cousin was telling me once about how Chronicles, and Anthology were IV, V, and VI (he neglected to mention Chrono Trigger), and I guess somehow in my mind I configured Tactics into that as well. So, when I went to the store next, I picked it up, thinking it was a combination of some of the older titles. And remember, this is when I was in like eighth grade. Well, to my pleasant surprise, I discovered that it is in fact its own unique story, and won me over instantaneously! But with the Crystal Chronicles titles, I knew they had nothing to do with the numbered series so I never tried them out. I never did hear the best news of them anyhow 🙁

Ohhhh, level capped until certain boss fights? That is a fantastic idea! No more endlessly grinding to out level everything and cruise to the end (like VII,X,XII). In theory this should provide more challenge, but in all actuality SE won’t make it too difficult, which means it’ll still be a pretty easy game (like most FF’s) if you spend a little time here and there leveling.

In a MMO, I can understand, but a console game? SE’s trying too hard to make FFXIII appeal to the masses. I was on the fence about whether this game would be ok or avoidable… yet the more I hear about it, the less I like about it.

Level Capping is bad.

You know everything I hear about FFXIII makes it evern more linear than they already said it would be. So that leaves two things: Gameplay and Story, and given the linear nature of the game story would most likely count more. I don’t think the gameplay will be too bad, but I did watch a preview that didn’t get me too excited. And story is from what I hear, FFVII with different names. Spend some time in Cocoon and then you leave there to keep on going. Sound familiar? (Midgar)

I’ll probably end up buying this. Mainly because I just don’t have anything else to play due to me being a picky gamer ^_^’. Watching the demo made it look AWESOME and made me want it. So… yeah…

What if they had done it in a style like Chrono Cross, where you get small bonus every now and then after a battle, and then you gain a big level after (almost) every boss, then back to the small stat building. That system was great, although the battles mostly optional, so stat building was completely optional.

Now having the game cut off your experience when you reach a certain level in a starting zone….yea, awful in a console non-mmo rpg.

… There is nothing wrong with the Xbox 360 console. True they do suffer from the RROD, but the later generations have a low rate of that happening (something like 2-3% I think), in comparison to the first generation of Xbox 360’s which were something like 30-40% getting RROD.

I have no intention of getting a PlayStation 3. Blu ray dvd? Meh… I’ve got too many DVD’s to replace by getting the Blu ray versions, and game wise there’s none on it which interest me.

Everyone bagging the Xbox 360 (Not just here in this thread but others) for something overhyped which is what the PlayStation 3 is…

1. The controller. I’m used to the simple and handy design of the Dualshock controllers. That Xbox controller is one huge-ass thing. I couldn’t possibly comfortably play games with that.
2. It’s made by Sony. Yes, I prefer Sony. Microsoft? I’ll stick with their OS not consoles.
3. PS3 exclusives are more appealing to me than Xbox exclusives. Fable, Halo? No thanks. Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Heavy Rain? Yes please.
4. Xbox Live requires payment. It’s not much, but I have no intention of paying to play online.

It’s as simple as that. Whichever one you get you won’t be missing out on a lot of games either way. There’s just so many dual releases these days.

I’m not talking about the 360 has a whole, but if you look at side by side comparisons of the 360 and the PS3 version of FF13 the 360 got a shafted in the graphics department.

I’d only get a PS3 in the event that it has a game or two that Xbox360 doesn’t offer. However, I scarcely believe that to be the case.

I have no intention of getting a PlayStation 3. Blu ray dvd? Meh… I’ve got too many DVD’s to replace by getting the Blu ray versions, and game wise there’s none on it which interest me..

Nobody said you have to replace your DVDs since Blu-ray players will play all DVDs. But once you start watching newer movies in high-def you’ll realize why it was worth it. Most older movies don’t transfer to high-def very well, even newer movies pre-high-def cameras, those I still stick to DVD. where as 2001: A Space Odyssey that was filmed in 1968 on 70mm film transfered awesomely. The movie for being over 40 years old looks beautiful on Blu-ray. But other favorites of mine like the Royal Tenenbaums and Monte Python and the Holy Grail won’t transfer as good. So I’m sticking with the DVD versions. Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman on Blu-ray compaired to DVD is like night and day. But trust me, not a lot of older movies on Blu-ray can pull that off.

Although this may sound like an ignorant statement, but I love the PS3 games more because I feel they have more varitety than the 360 (seems like they have nothing but FPS) and the Wii (Nothing but shovelware and about 6 good exclusive 1st party games. and Resident Evil/Silent Hill, Neg) Where as the PS3 has many of the games I love: LittleBigPlanet, Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear Solid 4, WarHawk, Uncharted 1 &2, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 1 & 2, Ratchet & Clank Future, Motorstorm 1 & 2, SingStar, Hot Shots Golf, White Knight Chronicles, the Eye of Judgment and soon to be God of War III Ultimate Edition, the Last Guardian and Gran Turismo 5. 😀 And I can still enjoy the multiplatform games like the Beatles Rockband, Bayonetta, Street Fighter IV, Silent Hill Homecoming, Bioshock, Mirror’s Edge, the Orange Box and Final Fantasy XIII which will be in HD (althought the game does kinda suck since playing the JP version)

But what’s the point of the free service if you can’t play online multiplayer and have parties or even everyday things we can already do on our computer like video chat, stream Netflix or access facebook and twitter? All of which can also be done on the PS3 for free. Even Sony’s upcoming paid service is going to have more feature options.

I love PS3 Game Library…. Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon’s Souls & Uncharted are games that match with me… But I don’t have one yet T_T

I can appreciate that Blu Ray DVD offers more over DVD etc, and as I had said in a debate with Locke_FF36 in the Star Ocean : The Last Hope International (Thread 73453) thread, it doesn’t really interest me the whole Blu Ray etc. If I want to watch Blu Ray DVD’s I’ll go and get a Blu Ray DVD player.

At the time of the PlayStation release, Nintendo had the N64 out and Sega had the Dreamcast (The Sega Saturn ad the 32X adaptor for the Megadrive/Genesis never really took off here in Aus.). The PSX did take over the console wars from that point on imo, and I do have some great games/memories from that console (Which I’m sure everyone does).

When I purchased a new Xbox 360 Elite a month ago, the clerk at the store tried to tell me that the Wii was superior to the Xbox 360 Elite and that I’d be better off with that. I admit, I am interested in being able to play older Nintendo games via downloading them, but the Wii imo is tailored more for people who have parties a lot or children who want to play games. What I’m about to say, may get me shot… but I feel that the Xbox 360 and, yes even the PlayStation 3, are geared more towards the hardcore gamer.

Although this may sound like an ignorant statement, but I love the PS3 games more because I feel they have more varitety than the 360 (seems like they have nothing but FPS) and the Wii (Nothing but shovelware and about 6 good exclusive 1st party games. and Resident Evil/Silent Hill, Neg) Where as the PS3 has many of the games I love: LittleBigPlanet, Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear Solid 4, WarHawk, Uncharted 1 &2, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 1 & 2, Ratchet & Clank Future, Motorstorm 1 & 2, SingStar, Hot Shots Golf, White Knight Chronicles, the Eye of Judgment and soon to be God of War III Ultimate Edition, the Last Guardian and Gran Turismo 5. 😀 And I can still enjoy the multiplatform games like the Beatles Rockband, Bayonetta, Street Fighter IV, Silent Hill Homecoming, Bioshock, Mirror’s Edge, the Orange Box and Final Fantasy XIII which will be in HD (althought the game does kinda suck since playing the JP version)

The Xbox 360 does have it share of FPS games, that’s true. So does the PlayStation 3 and Wii. Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Grand Theft Auto IV, N3: Nighty Nine Nights, Saint’s Row 1 and 2, Overlord 1 and 2, Lost Planet, Phantasy Star Online, Project Sylpheed, Ace Combat 6, Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Guitar Hero III and the rest, Eternal Sonata, Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2 as well as many other titles contradict what you said about the Xbox 360 having only FPS games. The other games you said: Beatles Rockband, Bayonetta, Bioshock, Mirror’s Edge, The Orange Box are also on the Xbox 360 (And some of which were released on the Xbox 360 before the Playstation 3).

Final Fantasy XIII is also coming out on the Xbox 360 as well, and eventually so will Final Fantasy XIV imo. SE would be stupid not to, as they would be cutting off a large amount of revenue from their coffers. Besides, Final Fantasy XI on the Xbox 360 is a direct port of the PC version so it would be simple to port that to the Xbox 360.

But what’s the point of the free service if you can’t play online multiplayer and have parties or even everyday things we can already do on our computer like video chat, stream Netflix or access facebook and twitter? All of which can also be done on the PS3 for free. Even Sony’s upcoming paid service is going to have more feature options.

Xbox Live is a subscription service, which is like I said in my post you responded to. True you have to pay for it, but so? With the Sega Dreamcast you had free online capability with that, yet the service had it’s ups and downs a lot. There were times when I was playing Phantasy Star Online and couldn’t due to the servers being down for long periods of time. Xbox Live does have it’s down times too for maintenance etc, but it is reliable and doesn’t have unannounced maintenance periods and the like. I can’t speak for the PlayStation 3 online capability, but for me $60 AUSD for a year’s subscription to Xbox Live isn’t that much to hand over.

About XBL being pay, don’t forget there’s often deals to get 12 months of XBL cheaper than normal if you’re willing to look. My friends keep getting deals from places like Amazon that take, upwards of, half off the regular price. I’m not sure if this is just a USA thing or not, but it’s there.

I love PS3 Game Library…. Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon’s Souls & Uncharted are games that match with me… But I don’t have one yet T_T Still I need to finish some other games before I start with the PS3
MGS games have never been my mainstay.
I enjoyed the Syphon Filter games on the PS1 more than any of the MG games I’ve played.
Not that it’s a bad series or anything, but not really a console seller for me.

Same goes for Uncharted, not my cup of tea…but given its critical acclaim I’m temped to rent it.

For me I go for what, possible, exclusives are going to be on the console.
And while I may have gotten a PS1 for ‘Final Fantasy’, the series doesn’t matter much to me anymore.
Atlus spoils Sony & Nintendo…while it release crap for Microsoft.

Luckily for me I already have a Wii…

Get FF13 because it has a secret nude model on the disc. 😉
