Creating…chiptunes?

I don’t exactly know what to call it, but, for example, what would I use to create NES/SNES music, or Sega Genesis music? Long story short, I want to try, but I have no idea what’s needed, IE programs, terms, references. That and…I want to try my hand at composing or at least get an idea of it, a future/job type of thing. My memory’s a bit fogged..all I remember is reading something about Midis. Midi would be NES-stuff if I remember correctly.

Though, for example..searching, what exactly do I search? The only thing I really know is…
NES music, midi bleeps, SNES, not sure/forgot, GEN, no idea. Maybe add GBA to the list.. That and knowledge of the piano is needed for these things. I think. Hoping someone out there can point me in the right direction. Many thanks.

8-bit music? They commonly use midis which creates a nostalgic feel and requires a very small amount of memory. (50kb for a big song, instead of 5+mb)

You know, I would be interested to know some tools for this as well. I tried looking around, but got a little confused a while ago.

Wow. Magical 8Bit is awesome! I just loaded it into FLStudio 8, and it works like a charm!

I have only used Magical 8bit for like 10 minutes, but it seems it’s a loooooot more efficient for what I do (blending 8bit instruments with other instruments) than working with FamiTracker. I’d say FamiTracker has more freedom in the editing of your instruments and probably stays more true to 8bit music making, but Magical 8bit can save you a lot more time when using it with your preferred music making program and from what I’ve noticed the sounds are just as good.

Here’s FamiTracker (http://famitracker.shoodot.net/) if that’s more up your alley.

hitmaker, I know your post wasn’t directed towards me but thanks anyways!
