Last night I saw this because I was drug to the theater by my friends. I had no expectations and zero hype, so maybe that helped, but I was completely blown away.

Never have I wanted to be in the lore of a film as badly as this.

Thoughts on it?

I thought it was great!! I saw it yesterday as well, and I’d had so many mixed review that I didn’t know what to expect either. I thought it was brilliant.

Saw this opening night in IMAX 3D. Loved it, simply loved it. Now I just need to buy some toys or more so movie made me want toys. I’m also interested in learning more about Pandora and such. Movie really did its job with me.

I can’t describe how much I love this movie. I’ve seen it three times and it’s actually gotten better with each showing. On top of that, I usually hate seeing movies in 3D because most directors use it as a cheap gimmick to simply "shove things out" at the audience, but it’s used so responsibly and effectively in Avatar that I can barely imagine seeing it in 2D now.

I can rave for days, but I fear I’m approaching fanboy-level behaviors. Suffice it to say that my top five favorite films has stayed the same for over ten years, but Avatar instantly took the top spot and has it in an absolute stranglehold.

As for me, I have yet to see this movie but am quite intrigued by what I’ve seen. Even though I watch virtually no television, I’ve seen advertisements via the internet and am definitely interested in seeing it. I really want to get one of the amp suit toys. They look awesome.

I saw this movie and there’s just something about it that really hit me. I plan on seeing it again tomorrow in 3D (although I’ve only seen it once in 3D, I agree with Prak’s statement about the 3D element and not sure if I’ll get the same experience watching it in 2D) and maybe more afterwards. It really felt like you were there and even though it’s almost 3 hours long, not once did I feel bored or that the movie was dragging itself out.

I can’t explain why I like this movie so much but hopefully I will after seeing it another time…or more :D.

Definitely one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

Avatar = Dances with Wolves + Science Fiction. I still enjoyed it, though.

The first time I saw it was with my friend and he has never seen a movie in 3D either until this one.

Hey guys, just for clarity, what’s ‘ROTF’? I probably know, but I just wanna make sure. I never watch TV anymore except last night I caught two minutes of Full Metal Alchemist before bed and then dozed off (nice to know there’s still SOMETHING good on), so I haven’t kept up with my movies for a while 🙁 In fact, it wasn’t until I joined Shrine that I even heard of Avatar :O

Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen.

Basically Avatar is everything it should have been, and infinitely more.

Gosh, I’ve seen it three times now, and I had goosebumps all the way through. Absolutely magical and the attention to detail was outstanding, I felt quite emotional after watching it.

Ndi, I <3 you for posting that animation, Neytiri is now one of my favourite film characters of all time. I want to be a Na’vi so much, such a beautiful race!

Yes, so much thought went into that film, third time round watching it was dedicated to watching all the stuff that happened in the background of the forest and it turns out I missed a lot!

You will not be disappointed :). And I can’t imagine getting the same experience in 3D compared to watching it in 2D. Honestly, I don’t think you would get the same experience when you watch it at home. Which saddens me but I could be wrong. I hope I am :(.

Maybe if you did have a pretty nice sized television you might be able to get the same experience as in the theater (or pretty damn close). And I don’t mean a 32" or 40" TV either. When I say big then I mean BIG.

It was better than I thought it would be, but I had cynical expectations going in. Great environment and creatures. Hit and miss dialogue. See it in 3D if you can, as the aesthetic pleasure is mostly what this film has to offer.

also: I think it’s interesting to consider this movie next to Cameron’s Aliens. You have a role reversal with regard to the depiction of humanity and the alien-as-other. Humans are openly referred to as aliens in Avatar.

Ugh, now that was a crappy movie, and I really enjoyed the first one.

I remember seeing the first one twice. Because I thought it was cool to see live action realistic giant robots duking it out. But the second one just didn’t seem to have that same air that the first one did.

But I did like the part where Optimus dies. Or the fighting rather that lead to his death.

At any rate, Avatar absolutely blew me away. By far, one of the BEST movies I’ve ever seen. I was amazed by the visuals, and the overall presentation of it all. The storyline reminded me of Princess Mononoke, and while that was also an amazing movie, I’d say Avatar blows it straight out the roof. I was not expecting the meaning behind the title to come the way it did; that was great. Probably one of the most original movies I’ve seen in a long, long time. Thanks you guys for recommending it! LOVED IT!

A lot of movies try various techniques to show mankind’s own callousness with regards to the natural world around us and open up a few eyes, but Avatar gives a blind man his sight by comparison. By the end of the movie, it feels so perfectly natural to refer to humans as ‘aliens’, I found it hard not to think of myself as being on a foreign world as I left the theater; the world of Avatar sucks you in so deep you’re left wishing there were no end, and that you could be a part of the vast world it presents you with. I’d be willing to shell out the bucks for a big screen TV just so that I can experience this movie time and again the way it was meant to be seen; not on a small screen with limited sound amplification, but on a large screen with the same size proportions for speakers for a far richer experience. I unfortunately wasn’t able to get into a 3-d showing, but what I saw still blew me away and I’m perfectly ready to venture back out to watch it a second time with the full visual effect. I’ve seen a lot of movies in my life, and Avatar is one of the few I’ve seen that actually had me emotionally gripped as was intended; just goes to show you what the power of great film making is capable of.

I totally agree! It’s definitely not a movie for people who lust want to see explosions and stuff like that (although it looked damn good in this movie) because they wouldn’t get the meaning behind it. But I really wish it didn’t end because it does suck you in. When I saw it my first time I felt like I was there (the 3D really helped).

I was also watching Avatar in 3D last week. Although I haven’t heard of it before nor did I know anything about the story, I was like: "You want to watch WHAT?!… Avatar?… Pfff… fine… if it needs to be…"

Boy, how wrong could I have been?! I was so captured immediately… I totally forgot about everything else around me… even the popcorn… 😀 I remember thinking "You filthy human bastards!" at one point, too… I would have wanted to join the battle against the human race with all my heart. I don’t know if I ever had been captured by any other movie like this before. It’s pure amazement and I’m so happy I went watching the movie. Can’t get any better… period…

Now that I tried, I understand what people meant when they said that this movie can’t be retold in words… It’s almost impossible… for me at least…

From what I heard, there’s supposed to be a sequel. With rumors (which might be true) that the humans will come back in full force.

So I went to see the so acclaimed film called Avatar, good film.

One of the most predictable movies I ever seen since X-Men Origins: Wolverine the difference that this is a good film, Wolverine wasn’t.

Typically I tend to stray from violent movies unless there’s a reason for the violence. As with Avatar, it has its place in the story, and really moves you. It’s the only movie where I’ve ever actually stood up and said ‘No no no no no!!!!" as the (just so I don’t spoil it) big giant thing was blown up, and then said "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" when (also so I don’t spoil it) the bastard you’re meant to hate finally gets what’s coming to him. To be honest, I really can’t picture a decent sequel, however; it just seems like the story found its rightful end when the time came, even though as I said, it’s so moving that you hate to even see it end at all.

It’s more like ‘Custard’s Last Stand in the 22nd and a .5 Century’, but that’s fine.

District 9 was better, for me, except in the ‘mindless fun’ part.

Both of them did try and do the same thing; retail a part of human history that isn’t very nice.

D9 is about South Africa during the aparti and how outdated tribal crap does nothing for society.

Avatar is about the American expansion into the west and how they treated the natives like crap if there was a resource that they wanted.

Both movies have their place; One is to give you a good ride, the other is to make you think.

Both movies were worth the price of a theater ticket; move so Avatar in 3D.

Both movies will be in my DVD/Blu-Ray collection at some point soon after release for home audiences.

(Yes I know D9 is out but I’m trying to buy a PS3 so I can buy the BR of it)

I really didn’t consider it that way; I thought of it more as a ‘man-versus-nature’ type of situation, sort of like Princess Mononoke. The entire planet of Pandora and every form of life on it seems to symbolize our own earth in many ways; as a pure plain of existence, untainted by mankind’s cruel touch until the events of the film.

When they take Jake to the nest of those flying creatures and they jump on those free dangling vines, my fear of heights actually kicked in momentarily.

I had that similar effect take hold of me during many scenes. 3-d or not, I found myself so engrossed in it, I began to forget about everything else around me. Not having an annoyingly loud group of teenaged retards in the theater helped, too. I think it was the first movie I’ve ever seen where I wasn’t having to strain my ears to hear over a bunch of giggling schoolgirls and idiot jocks who want everyone else to know that they’re going skateboarding with Josh this weekend or dropping some acid at Tony’s house. That made the movie far more enjoyable.

Just wait till I see this in 3-d; the experience is going to be totally enhanced and everything great about it will be even greater.

But me, I live my life the way I want so even though I may look Native American, I’m far from even acting like one. I used to tell one of my friend’s that I’m probably the most white-acting Native American he’ll ever meet lol. But sometimes I’m ashamed to be part Native American. A HUGE majority have big racial problems and because I don’t deal with racism, it kinda pisses me off.

But that’s something else entirely. I was thinking more of the way the Na’vi lived that I found so entrancing. How they’re so in tune with their "mother". That’s what I meant by saying "maybe it’s because I’m part Native American" because many tribes (if not all. I don’t know how they all lived) were like that.

I have a fear of falling so that scene didn’t bother me. But what did was when he almost fell and had to be saved…again lol.

A trilogy, eh? That just made my day! I can’t think of many directors who would have the creative prowess to continue this storyline any further, but James Cameron is a movie genius.

I liked the movie, but to me there was nothing new on the table.
Just too much Flavor.

To me this movie did everything right, we may have seen it before in other movies, but overall it came together very well. Solid acting, action, romance and most importantly it had a high level of believability which drew you into the world like a good epic should.

I get that it’s "Dances with Wolves in Space", I don’t see a problem with this however, seeing as there truly are no original storylines anymore. The theme was perfect for introducing the concept of exploring an alien world using an alien body as a capsule.

Predictable? Sure. Entertaining and captivating. Most definitely. And not just thanks to the visuals, but the pacing, characters and their goals all meshed seamlessly. And I think that’s usually a sign of a great movie. Something that comes full circle for the viewer.

-On a side note, very good movie. I thought Toruk was the star of the show honestly. If I’d have to pick my "perfect" movie, it’d be either this or Braveheart (funny how one character dies at the end and the other is reborn). Very different movies, but they stick to the above principals I pointed out. I actually felt sad/disappointed when I was brought back to the real world and realized I couldn’t take Pandora with me.

I’m torn on a trilogy possibility, because as much as I like the world of Pandora, I thought the tale told was fine as it is and nothing more would be necessary. I can live with visualizing the characters grow have more adventures and eventually pass away just fine on my own. But if it comes to fruition then so be it. 😀

James Cameron’s big-grossing, 3-D spectacle has earned lukewarm reviews by both the Vatican newspaper and its radio station, which say the movie is simplistic in its plot; and is superficial in its eco-message, despite groundbreaking visual effects.

The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano says that despite "so much stupefying, enchanting technology" there are "few genuine emotions".

Vatican Radio called it "rather harmless" but said the movie was no sci-fi masterpiece.

The reviews came out after a red carpet preview held in Rome just a stone’s throw from St Peter’s Square. The movie will be released on Friday in Italy.

Avatar trilogy gets a big hell yes from me. I’m usually wary of sequels, but this is the guy who made Aliens and Terminator 2 we’re talking about. His sequel pedigree is pretty damn impressive.

The sequels will take place on other moons in the same "universe", not necessarily involving the Navi or Pandora, though the events that happened in the first movie may be referenced.

The thread over on SA in their Cinema Snob sub-forum has all the relevant links, but the short version is: You’re going to be waiting a long time for it because Cameron has already optioned to do a disaster film about the Hiroshima atomic bombing from a "ground zero + aftermath" point of view first, followed by a Battle Angel Alita film then the Avatar sequels (if nothing more interesting to him comes up first).

I say fuck it, the box office steamrolling Avatar is doing now has pretty much given Cameron a blank check to do whatever the fuck he wants with movie studios.

It’s kinda like the friend I brought to see the movie the first time I saw it. He said it was alright. And his favorite movie of all time was still 28 Days Later….which I thought kinda sucked. The sequel I thought was better, but even still, that’s not saying much at all.

Ahh, ’28 Days Later’… I had high expectations for that movie, but every last one of them was shot down in the first twenty minutes or so. Sometimes even for somebody who can appreciate a deeper plot in a movie can still enjoy a good bloodfest once in a while, but that movie just tanked in every way possible for me. It seemed more like a parody of itself in too many respects, and left lots to be desired.

Yeah agreed. I like movies that make you think but I’m known to watch action movies as well. Particularly those Chinese martial art movies. They almost always have a great soundtrack and usually an interesting story.

There was this one I rented from blockbuster a year ago. I really liked it but for the life of me, I just can’t remember the title because I would like to own it! All I know is that the "angry" samurai from "The Last Samurai" movie was in it. Actually, I should just look up that actor and look at the movies he’s been in. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that before!

I don’t know… I did understand all this you say & I did realize all this while I was watching the movie, I appreciate that meaning, it’s just is not new, how many times are we going to be lectured about this in the same way?, besides, there are no Shades of Grey on the movie, everything is Black & White, it’s very clear who is Good & who is Evil, that’s another thing that I didn’t liked, because it made it even more predictable.

And therein lies the problem of not pleasing everyone. I felt too, I’ve seen this type of tale before (Pocahontas, Dune, DwW, Ferngully, even Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke to an extent) but it was the way it was told that made it entertaining enough to feel original on it’s merits.

It’s a classic fable more than a dramatic play filled with gray areas and backstabbing plots. It’s something people of all ages can enjoy, not just children obviously. Also if anyone is looking for an original unpredictable plot these days, I’m sorry to say, but they will be severely disappointed. If a tried and true story is given proper direction with solid players then it can still be viewed and enjoyed despite it’s influences.

To me, these offer more intrigue, but do not exactly fit the story and world very well at all. I do agree that the Colonel could have talked more about the desert Earth and why it’s more important they find this unobtainium, or show Earth or show more of Jake’s brother- explain his death a bit more. The original script was much longer and I’m sure he was pressured to cut it down.

Understandable; maybe another good analysis is that with each iteration of this story, they’re striving for it to be the greatest. Think of it as there being a new movie of this caliber for each new generation. Perhaps they’re trying to keep there a movie of this meaning consistently fresh in our minds, so that we don’t forget our place in the world. That’s my theory as best I can put it. And regarding the predictability, that’s another thing not everyone will likely pick up on. You’ve probably seen a lot of movies that had similar outcomes, but it took me a while to see the true villains for who they were. I suppose I knew from the start who the two lead characters would be, I just wasn’t sure which side would ultimately pull a knife on them. It left me guessing for a while, and I think that’s one of the many things that makes it so great.

You won’t get even close to the experience compared to watching it at the cinema in 3-D. Unless you have a big TV of course. Or a home theater. I’m almost positive this will be the case.

Jealousy is exactly it 😉 Makes me sick, because it’s just so juvenile to have that mindset. Instead, he could be embracing it and using it as an example to help try to improve, not remain stuck in a childish train of thought that it’s automatically a derogatory film because it depicts a culture we could apparently never achieve.

Now, I’m very tired. . . but I remember I completely forgot to mention how I felt after seeing Avatar in 3-d on Sunday. Wow. Certainly the way the movie was meant to be watched, but unfortunately as I predicted it just didn’t have the same effect on me after seeing it normally already. The sheer level of realism in the virtual physics behind the 3-d production and presentation had me hooked from the get-go, and every time something would come at the screen, I almost literally started to cringe away, as it actually did trigger my reflexes to an extent. I’ve never seen a 3-d film before, but after this one practically had me dodging every projectile to cmoe near the screen, I can only imagine what it must’ve looked like had I seen it this way the first time, and I’m anxious to see another movie the same way.

The technology used to film Avatar was invented for this movie. That’s why it took so long to develop the film. It is absolutely going to have an impact on a lot of films in the future.

I think it’s easy to under appreciate just how incredible the technology used for this film is. It’s not just how pretty Pandora looked, it’s the motion capture technology is particular that is incredibly impressive.

To give you an idea:

Motion capture has been done before- the LOTR movies are probably the most notable when it comes to this- but nothing else has even come close to what Avatar has achieved. The actors weren’t just voice acting while people animated their parts- they were able to give a performance completely through the Avatars. I really recommend watching some of the making of Avatar stuff out there because I think what’s been done is so amazing.

I think James Cameron’s movies tend to do so well with people because he’s an excellent director with good vision and has the resources at his disposal to execute his vision perfectly. I find most of Titanic to be pretty dull, but I think that sort of cheesy romantic epic is exactly what he was going for and he nailed it. That’s why it resonated so much with the people that that appeals to, and there’s the boat sinking for everyone else.

Though his best movie is probably Aliens. Probably.

I still have yet to watch the whole 22 minutes of that link you gave me :(. I’ve only gotten as far as the marine training for the guy that plays as Jake (can’t remember his name and too lazy to look it up). But it is interesting the many things that went into the making this movie.

Its a really great movie and i have seen it 5 times. 2 times on 3D and the rest regular 2D. And of course i have downloaded the complete soundtrack too.

And a blu-ray player is indeed a good purchase (if you have an HD tv that is) but I would’ve gone with a PS3 if I was going to pay $200. Because you know, it’s a video game system AND blu-ray player :).

I’ve already watched all the making of stuff they released before the movie, so I’m trying to decide whether what it includes makes it worth buying now, or if I should just wait for a blu-ray player.
