Final Fantasy Dissidia Japanese boxartFinal Fantasy Dissidia hasnt even been released anywhere outside of Japan, where it sold over 801,000 copies on PSP within one month, yet a sequel to the action-RPG was already considered but put aside according to Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura.
At the end of an interview in the 704-page Japanese Dissidia Ultimania strategy guide, Mr. Nomura said: There are no current plans for a sequel. To be honest, I wanted to do one up until a few months ago. I even called [Mitsunori] Takahashi, the planning director, and [Ryuji] Ikeda, the lead programmer, to talk about sequel concepts I told them to do what they had to do, but also prepare themselves [to make a sequel]. However, circumstances inside the company wiped that idea out to actually make [a sequel] happen would be very difficult given the situation.
Its suggested that these circumstances are simply Square Enix Production Team 1 being in a rush finish Final Fantasy XIII. 1UP further translates that Mr. Nomura does close off the interview by saying that a sequel isnt entirely out of the question: If a lot of fans ask for a Dissidia II, circumstances might change. Id like to think about the matter again if that happens.
Considering a hidden ending hints at a sequel, lets hope a second Dissidia might go in development in the future. Although thatll be hard to say for the English-speaking audience, since the U.S. release isnt until mid-2009. Still, what do you say, should Dissidia be a series?
As for future Dissidia games, to be honest, considering how the story mode for Dissidia ends where it’s revealed that the game is essentially a tie-in/psuedo sequel to FFI, it could possibly be given a sequel, although I’d much rather a proper FF-themed fighting game with most of the cast from every FF game, rather than just the protagonist and antagonist from each (yes I know how incredibly lame and fanatical that sounds). But, it probably won’t happen, so ah well.
