Anyway, here’s how this works: I’ll post a video game soundtrack starting with the letter "A." The next person will post one starting with a "B." Et cetera. But the catch is that you have to say something about the soundtrack or name a favorite song from it. Bonus points if you give a link. I’ll try to keep track of everyone’s suggestions in the OP. Here’s mine…
Alien 3 (NES) (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=EBDBD0A8FE9E84B8)
It’s much more common to hear about the soundtrack for the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo versions of this game, but I like the NES music far better. The Stage 1 music you’ll hear in the link, for instance, has all of the great qualities of the rest of the soundtrack. Fittingly moody and dystopic, driven by aggressive percussion and a simple three-note bass line that carries the song, it fits the visuals perfectly and shows off some tricky melodic writing from Jeroen Tel, who’s also known for his many, many C64 soundtracks.

The soundtrack of this game wasn’t really huge. You mostly heard the main bgm while going through its 100 stages. Over a couple of stages, the bgm became pretty catchy. I forgot who the artist is.
A snow boarding game for the Playstation 1. A mixture of techno and trance.
Favourite tracks is BGM 20:
If the gameplay of de Blob wasn’t good enough alone, the music in the game is simply legendary. While the tracks in of themselves are good enough to get mention alone, the use of them in-game furthers the impact of the music.
At first when you start a level music doesn’t play, but once Blob gets some colour and gets to painting buildings, the music starts trickling in bit by bit until all the instruments are playing. Add to this the fact that using a different colour accentuates a different instrument, and you have one great use of music in a game.

Besides being one of the greatest and most blisteringly difficult side-scrolling shooter-type games of all time, it’s got an awesome techno soundtrack to boot (and normally, techno just kind of annoys me.)
Link is to track #23 – "Bloody Battle".
The second and (as far as I know) last time that Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu, two of the greatest video game composers, worked on a soundtrack together. And it also had Junya Nakano and Masashi Hamauzu, too–no schlubs themselves. Mitsuda’s songs have his "Zorro" signature all over them, as he was fresh off Chrono Trigger and employing a lot of the same techniques. And Uematsu’s pieces interestingly sound like early versions of Final Fantasy VII tracks. One of my favorite songs is "Blue Sky," which the link will go directly to. Definitely check this one out if you haven’t before.
The third part of the legendary series, which,to my great dismay, never made it outside of Japan. Few people have actually played it,which may be reason why it’s considered to be the black sheep of the series. SPIT INTO THE FACES OF THE PEOPLE WHO TELL YOU THAT. It boggles my fucking mind how anyone can possibly call this game the worst Golden Axe in the series. It’s second only to GA:The Revenge of Death Adder. In terms of controls and gameplay options,it’s the best beat’em’up on the Genesis next to Bare Knuckle 3.
But enough ranting. One of the reasons I love this game so damn much is the music. I’ll admit I haven’t heard of Tatsuyuki Maeda before, but Naofumi Hataya is not new to the series, since he wrote the OST for Golden Axe 2.
Link is a track called A Voyage to Castle, which plays when you fight your way through a warship cruising through a ship graveyard. Note the kickass percussion, especially those absolutely bitchin’ giant taiko drum samples. You hear plenty of them in the 0:23-0:36 segment. I’m in love with those samples. =) They exude that Conan the Barbarian vibe that is so essential to the series. And the funny thing is,outside of maybe GA2,I haven’t heard a single Genesis OST that utilizes these.
Give this one a shot.
Here are some of the songs of the NES version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYPCapaz90s <- Battle Song =D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzFQdcDMvGU <- Title Screen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAl3p_ZKpN0 <- This plays when your charcter sleeps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqphNRxhBZQ <- Troll Territory xD
I hope you like it. =)
The title music by Richard Joseph is a tongue-in-cheek take on Basil Poledouris’ brilliant Robocop theme! I love the watery arpeggiated section beginning at 1:02, and the level music seems to me like an ancestor to Banjo Kazooie’s playful ragtime bass and midi xylophone (the Megadrive arrangement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjO3zUORkWs) brings this aspect out even more).
Thanks guys for all the picks so far. Loads of new stuff to me here 🙂

You have your head on your shoulders.Everyone will say SoR2 is a better game, but they’re on crack, and the same goes for Golden Axe,three is the best.
King of Fighters 2000 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9-kf3PqAvw)
This was SNK last KoF game before they went bankrupt. It was also my first KoF game.I hadn’t played any SNK fighting games before this, and I was immediately swept up in the great character designs(Before falcoon destroyed everything). The Soundtrack is definitely one of the best fighting game soundtracks ever made. Each song fits each team very well.
Beauty and the Beast-Art of Fighting Team Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU1iK61KLRM)
Ikari Warriors Team Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00r91g9wc5Y)
Hero Team Theme
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSVIUelRhBY)
Ice Place-Kula Diamond’s Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-cdUBvwe9M)
This in my opinion is the best song in the game.Never in my life would I have thought of hearing breaks and square waves in the same song with pianos, strings and harps.SNK’s sound team has been consistantly pumping out great music for many years, but this soundtrack will always be my favorite.
Dark Saint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv6_bDfnHGc) – Hands down one of my favorite boss fight songs of all time.
Parting Forever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFGrxKDrluI) – I bring this song up every time I can conceivably connect it to the topic at hand. Hauntingly beautiful piano and chorus… probably my favorite track on the album.
You know, for some reason I have a hard time understanding if you’re agreeing with me or subtly mocking me here. =)
As for SoR2,it’s generally considered to be the best of the series, and I don’t necessarily disagree. The soundtrack alone instantly elevates it to God Tier. The third one is considered to be the worst because most people know it not as Bare Knuckle 3 (the original Japanese version),but Streets of Rage 3,which is hands-down one of the worst, most butchered localizations I’ve ever seen. Sega of America went out of their way to fuck it up in every conceivable way. Regardless, when it comes to pure gameplay,I’d still have to say that BK3 is probably the best beat’em’up I’ve ever played (until SoRRV5 rolls around, that is =)). The amount of things you can do is pretty astounding, and nearly all of those attacks are extremely intuitive and are constantly used on the fly, unlike, say,in Cyborg Justice, where most of your move inputs are so fucking ridiculously arcane that you’ll probably never use like half of them.

I am not mocking you,I agree with you 100%.The problem I have with SoR2 soundtrack is I don’t like playing the game to it.It’s good to listen to, but it doesn’t get in the mood to fight, like the SoR or SoR3’s soundtrack does. The only problem I have with SoR3 is the lack of story, but I do like the extra difficulty.SoR 3 is easily the best beat’em’up made, and that’s including modern games as well.Haven’t played Cyborg Justice in a long time, so I’m a little fuzzy on that game.
Crystals, harps and violins are the signature sound of this beautiful soundtrack.

yeah i like the medievil music. the same composer that did Primal.
Oh fuck yeah.
By far and away my favorite SNES game of all time. I knew it was gonna be awesome the second I looked at the cover.
I mean,it has three cybernetic ninja commandos in a vaguely post-apocalyptic Orwellian dystopia beating the shit out of hordes of soldiers, mutants and robots. What the hell else do you want? The only way it could be awesomer is if they were on fire.
One of your ninjas is a dude named Kamaitachi. This guy:
Notice that he’s so fucking badass that he doesn’t even bother to cover up the fact that he’s a cyborg, walking around with all of his armor plating exposed. Oh,and he has razor-sharp sickles attached to his arms.
AWESOME.
But after everything I’ve just said, the reason why I love this game to bits in the soundtrack. Dear god,the soundtrack.
The guy in charge of it was Hiroyuki Iwatsuki of Natsume fame, one of my favorite composers of all time. He often seems to be working in tandem with Iku Mizutani and Kouichi Yamanishi. I like to think Yamanishi and Mizutani are his disciples of sorts, but I could be completely wrong on that part. =) The games they worked on are absolute classics. Shatterhand/Solbrain,Wild Guns,Choujin Sentai Jetman, the SNES versions of Powers Rangers,Shadow of the Ninja/Kage for the NES,and I’m pretty damn sure they also did Mitsume Ga Tooru. I’m not sure how it all works out,but somehow these three all have a very distinct, instantly recognizable style. It’s magic,I swear, because their music is insanely catchy and upbeat.
In Ninjawarriors Again,Iwatsuki topped even himself. There’s only a few games I can really think of where I love dearly pretty much every single track on the OST. This is one of those games.
But you don’t have to take my word for it. =) Let’s get this party started!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1Qn7rapEEw&feature=related
First level theme. If this doesn’t get your head boppin’ and your feet tappin’ to the beat, you must be dead.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFF85GzhvLU&feature=related
Second level theme. It’s pretty much a requisite for nearly any game that the first level theme is the best and the catchiest, while the second level stage usually loses a bit of steam compared to that initial burst of awesome. This one is an exception. Iwatsuki manages to convey this feel that just now you’ve done something cool and heroic by beating the first stage, but your mission continues. Dramatic progression,if you will. Forgive me if it sounds like I’m putting too much thought into a synthy 16-bit beat. I probably am. =)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-VVanSIfZY&feature=related
This lil’ number plays when you’re blasting through the upper floors of a skyscraper. The entire floor has this Asian motif to it,and you can definitely hear it in the music. The boss is this crazy shirtless tattooed martial artist guy with long silvery hair who punches the ground and causes green dragon-shaped columns of flame to erupt from under it. Fuck year.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Kxb_1q4thI&feature=related
More drama, more tension. We’re getting closer to the end. =)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN4MpWXaqHQ&feature=related
OH HELL YEAH. A remix of the 1st stage’s boss fight theme! Why? Because this level’s boss is the giant Ahnald-looking android from stage 1,except it’s an upgraded model, with new attacks and decked out in full body armor. And there’s two of these guys!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Wx1rtcQbQ&feature=related
I’ll just quote the guy who commented this on Youtube, because he explained it better than I ever could. =)
Ah, yes… This track is VERY effective. We’ve pinned Banglar in his underground bunker and he’s not getting away this time.
For the last stage of a game, you need to have good music. This track is exactly how you do it.
And just to top it off,one of the best Stage Complete jingles I’ve ever heard:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAt-7I1lbQE&feature=channel_page
Phew! Give this one a shot, guys, you won’t regret it. =)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnaWbyVUSRw&feature=related
And just to top it off,one of the best Stage Complete jingles I’ve ever heard:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAt-7I1lbQE&feature=channel_page
Phew! Give this one a shot, guys, you won’t regret it. =)
I said it before, and I’ll say it again this is one of most definitive game soundtracks ever. The best part is the 80’s vibe it gives off, just listen to the credits. This is VGM at it’s core.Iwatsuki is also very consistent, I have never heard a bad soundtrack from him, and on that note.
Omega Five(2008)
There isn’t much to say other than this soundtrack is awesome.I thought VGM was dead until I heard this soundtrack. It has newer synth sounds but it composed with an older style, the best part for me was the retro versions of the song.He remade every song using older synth.I will try and find some songs posted online to share.
Plok (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ODKKILZiYY)
This is an overlooked SNES soundtrack from the Follin Bros. that has several great tracks on it, plus a funny riff on the Rocky theme song called "Boxing Glove." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmleGVilw5U) The main link goes to "Beach," although "Flea Pit" is worth digging up, too. For some reason, every YouTube video of "Flea Pit" has some horrible corruption of the bass line that I suspect is due to the ways in which the Follin Bros. manipulated the SNES hardware to make this soundtrack. In several songs they used chords as samples or varied the envelopes as the song progressed, which might have made it hard to rip "Flea Pit." Nevertheless, "Beach" is great and a good introduction to the rest of the soundtrack. Enjoy.
I would, but I can’t actually think of a game that begins with Q. Let alone one with good music.
The only ones I can think of are Quantum Redshift for the Xbox and Quackshot for the Genesis. Haven’t played any Quake games,so I can’t comment on those. =)
I dunno, arthur…should we declare Q a bust?
Q*bert
Qix
Quarth
I guess soundtracks don’t exist for these game boy games? Qix came to mind and I just wiki’d it. I’m out of my depth here, sorry guys.
Anyway, I’ll offer up Quake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv5Jvr2Fp48), based on the strength of the theme song. I think Trent Reznor, for all his faults, is a fantastic producer and really let his talents show here. The music is simple but terrifying. The build-up that goes just past the one-minute mark doesn’t bring any resolution to all of the tensions between the melodic line, the guitar, the machine sounds, the screams, the ostinato, and the strings–and then everything drops out, leaving us with tremolos of the scream and a quietly pulsing loop that sounds like a foghorn heard from the distance. It’s wonderfully atmospheric.
Now for NucleaRaptor’s awesome post (again) for those who didn’t get to see it before…
REPOSTAN
Rage Racer (PSOne)
Best. Drivan. EVER.
I haven’t played any other games in the Ridge Racer series yet,but from what I gather, the only other game in the entire series that stands close to Rage Racer in terms of music is Ridge Racer Type 4. And what would you know, the lead composer for both of these is Hiroshi Okubo. Next to the Initial D OSTs,this is THE Music To Drive Madly To. Actually,I don’t recommend it,because playing this shit while driving is flat-out DANGEROUS. When a cop busts your ass for going 30 miles over the speed limit, don’t say I didn’t warn you. =)
Oh,and did I mention that even if soundtrack were to be removed,we’d still be left with one of the best, most fun, most relaxing and at the same time most intense arcade racing games ever? If you see this game anywhere,BUY IT,it should be under $10.
The very first track on the music select screen,Rage Racer:

I believe that’s the credits music. What a perfect sendoff. I love the upbeat mood this song creates. =)
EDIT:
YES! I found the two tracks that play during the post-race replays! I LOVE THOSE! Dear god, those female vocals… I like to imagine that it’s Reiko Nagase herself singing along to these. =) Her voice in this game is hot as hell.

I always liked the Toejam and Earl soundtrack because it’s quirky and funky.
For U: Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons –Yoko Kanno
This one is just major nostalgia for me, but I love the music. I still haven’t beaten this game, but it is major fun to play.
Now some of the songs.

Some of my favourite tracks:
First Step Towards Wars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDm9LaJeN9w)
Theme of Adol (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ybid-EzZmgk)
Palace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4ebZxDz0xo)
Tower of the Shadow of Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbqL-yo-oEg)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (http://rapidshare.com/files/305142823/ZAMN.zip) has some of the most incredible catchy B-tunes that you could ask for. Creepy, yet silly enough(just like the game itself) that no one takes it seriously…and let’s face it, how many games have you square off against a Titanic Toddler with tomatoes, ice pops and soda can grenades? Even though there weren’t that many tracks(the pack I will upload later only has 14, compared to the game’s 46 or so levels), each one was used in a perfect setting., and you could never really get tired of them.:)
Rip now uploaded!
Audiosurf.
Why no soundtrack link? Because the soundtrack is WHATEVER you want it to be. What ever mp3s are in your collection; classical music, other game music, rock, country, pop, techno, and everything in between; the game reacts to the music and provides a different challenge based on the song.
Check it out!
Its an NES game, check out GH. I shared what I thought about it.
You miss the point, jakob. WHY is the music so good? What parts did you like? Did a particular tune get stuck in your head, or did it fit with the action? Also, there is no links for the music in GH, so either some description is needed, or some links(if you would, please).
First of all, there ARE no links, so sorry about that. I did say that I enjoyed the music, but I didn’t have much to say about it. I should have at least said it was an NES game, but I didn’t think I would be called out for not wanting to research the history of the game and ofthe composer[s] or elaborate. Remember, this is for FUN, so if you believe that criticizing other people’s posts or being condescending is the purpose of this thread then you are missing the point as well.
As far as the werewolf soundtrack goes, I think it’s rhythmically interesting in its synocopation, but the percussion parts are repetitive at times. The game isn’t even really that great, but the music is very enjoyable.
My favorite track in the game is the level theme for the werewolf (BGM 2)–i’m not sure of the title but in the nsf file I referred to previously it is track 8. I enjoy the descending motion in the bass coupled with the ascending motion in the upper parts in the beginning of the track that–together–build to the main theme, and I also enjoy the secondary theme that follows it. I find this track to be the most likely to get stuck in your head, and I don’t really mind it when it does.
(From "Werewolf: The Last Warrior" for the NES)
I know we are all friends here and I hope we can continue enjoying Video Game Music together. Sorry if that sounded a bit too forceful, but I felt that "You miss the point" was not necessary or helpful. However, I do recognize that more information is helpful, so as you asked, I will give links and better info when I post to this thread in the future, as it is a fun thread. Sorry if I dented the fun, guys.
Oh man,I remember that game. I still give it a shot every now and then, but get brutally shot down every time (more on that later). When I heard the news about Data East folding a couple of years back,Werewolf and High Seas Havoc were the two games I remembered them by,so I was pretty ;_;.
This game was kinda scary when I was a little kid, too. =) You start off in this dark, scary forest, and one of the first things you see is what I guess is the main character’s mentor, this batshit crazy-looking hobo guy, staring right at you from the screen and narrating some bullshit while lightning flashes in the background and this really tense music plays (EDIT: This is the track – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMKuGkSJ3Ag&feature=PlayList&p=B3A2207DEAC09166&index=0). But then you kill your first enemy, grab the "W" power-up,lightning flashes, and you turn into this:
A werewolf with hookswords for arms. Awesome or FUCKING awesome?
The music is pretty damn good. I’m not familiar with any of the composers (Jewtube says it’s S. Sakai,T. Miura and Y. Takahama),though, which is a shame.
This here is the theme of the werewolf form,by far the best piece of music in the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K88EqLQvYjQ&feature=PlayList&p=B3A2207DEAC09166&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=2
Man,that melody always reminded me of something else, even when I was a kid,but damn if I know what. =) Goddamn,I love that buildup at the beginning.
This track is so good that it basically overshadows everything else in this game. =) None of the other tracks even come close, though they are pretty catchy. This here is a great Stage Complete jingle, though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g5PDhoPDos&feature=PlayList&p=B3A2207DEAC09166&index=5
Music is the one thing that kept me playing this game, though, because while it’s not necessarily bad,it’s fucking fiendishly difficult. Level 4,I think,is this jungle stage. Under you is water. Out of this water, legions of fucking piranhas jump out to attack you. They can’t be killed, they practically cannot be dodged, and they never stop coming.
You get knocked into the water, you die. Even if by some miracle you don’t drown,if you take enough damage from the piranhas, you turn back into a vanilla human. When that happens, you’re completely, utterly hosed. You see, when you revert back to your human form, not only do your damage and striking range become total shit, but your jumping ability decreases drastically. And since this stage is pretty much entirely made out of platforms, the game becomes unwinnable at that point.
Fuck.
tl;dr good game, but nearly fucking impossible to beat.
Sorry if my comment came off a bit brusque, but if all we did here was toss names around and say "good game,I like the music in it,"this thread would be pretty boring.
You did much better on your second try, though,if I do say so myself. See,you even inspired me to write another nostalgiagasm. =)
I have to go for Blaster Master (http://nsf.hcs64.com/b/Blaster%20Master%20%5bChou%20Wakusei%20Senki%20-%20Metafight%5d%20(1988)(Sunsoft).zip) for the NES composed by Naoki Kodaka (+Marumo?)
I played this game for so many hours as a kid. There is just something really, really fun about a game that is both a 2D side-scroller when you’re in your tank and bird’s eye view when your dude hops out and goes into little mini-dungeons.
My favorites are:
Area 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M25ucxIgoqo)
The opening reminds me of a John Williams score (star wars, just a bit.) I just get really excited, and with those first 2 ascending fourths i’m 10 years old and sitting watching my brother play (and die quite a bit.)
Area 3
I am a sucker for anything with a consistent running line of high-hat(I think that’s what they are wanting it to sound like) and bass hits, and the melody is catchy.
Area 5 is great, although I like it more in a harmonic sense than a rhythmic sense. Even though it has a clear 4/4 (like most of these tracks) it has a nice flowing feeling if you think of it in 1 (for me at least.)
The boss themes aren’t too interesting, but all in all, this has got to be one of my favorite 10, if not in my top 5.

This is the deciding factor that’s finally gonna make me play this game. =) I fucking love Kodaka. Batman: Return of the Joker has arguably the greatest soundtrack on the NES. I was about to make a post about it,but you beat me to the B. =)
To be honest,I have played it once, but I was like 8 at the time,so I’ll be coming in totally fresh.
I think you mean Gauntlet IV.I have a few songs on my Youtube page. You can tell by the sound his custom driver produces.
Gauntlet 4 – Transparent Obstacles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brUFB5z1i7E)
Gauntlet 4 – Sortie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOagvSmosBg)

Gauntlet 4 – Retribution
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMKNjdcY-Qs)
Anyway, next nominee is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (http://rapidshare.com/files/305178227/SOTN.zip). Wow…just WOW! I honestly don’t think anyone can listen to this track and not be captivated by it. From the harpsichord-heavy track of Wood Carving Patita(Library), to the deceptive rock-and-rollin’ Wandering Prince(Clock Tower), to the climactic tunes of Black Banquet(Final Boss theme), this game’s strongest feature is its music. It doesn’t matter if you felt the game was too short(which it was), or if it was too easy(stop hunting for the Crissaegrim scrubs, lol), I honestly dare anyone to say the music is bad.
Oh well; D is just as easy to hit out of the park; DOOM. I prefer the PC Soundtrack and you should too. Here’s a link to get you started (though it may be missing a few).
Each of the three houses (Atreides, Harkonnen and Ordos) have their own styles, with Atreides sounding a bit more along the good/noble side (and also having the added benefit of being composed by Frank Klepacki), while the Harkonnen music tends to favor a more bombastic/rock sound. The Ordos are heavy on the techno, which makes them my least favorite of the three, but they still have an interesting sound.
Here’s a sample of each of the three:
Atreides – Ride the Worm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1foHX5Kv0M)
Harkonnen – Harkonnen Force (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHL6CDyDfp8) (This one takes about a minute to kick in, but it’s one of my favorite tracks in the game.)
Ordos – Ghola (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2GELCC9FF8)
Green Planet – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixIVvBhO6K4&feature=related
Phantom Road – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olw4SSdX2Ro&feature=related
Finish – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXZNJnY2FR0&feature=related
All of those links should lead you to plenty more in the featured tab!
This is yet another one of those games I always used to play but never finished…
However, love the music!!! I suppose you could call it Neo-Baroque at times (main theme), with a couple tracks that would lean a bit toward techno or rock.
My favorite track, hands down, is what I have as Track 2 (I think it’s called ‘Clue Room.’) I could see a kind of goofy, brecker brothers-type jazz version of this with a solo section that is just way out there harmonically (check out ‘Some Skunk Funk’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3t72s4HB90) to see what i’m thinking if you’ve never heard of them, because holy crap, they’re awesome.) I’m not really sure why I have that image in my mind because it really sounds nothing like the gauntlet soundtrack, but I think it works…lol…?
Back to Clue Room (track 2)–I just like the bass line, and the register changes in the upper voices of the melody. I was always totally freaked out that I wasn’t going to find the clue before the time ran out in this level, so I get a little excited when this one comes on and I think the music was a good %70 of that.

Awards: Won the Game Audio Network Guild award in the Best Soundtrack category.
I don’t see this soundtrack mentioned too often around here, but I love it. I’m a total sucker for all those guitars, lutes, flutes, bouzoukis, and timpanis. There are a couple of excellent orchestral pieces on the soundtrack as well, but I gravitate more towards the Celtic music and the jigs. Some of it is reminiscent of Diablo’s "Town Theme," so if you like that piece, you’ll probably like this stuff, too.

The music seems to be one of the game’s biggest redeeming factors.
– I’ve been following this guy’s music since he was part of Wolfteam when he made the soundtrack to both Earnest Evans and El Viento. The composer of the games: "Tales", "Star Ocean", and "Baiten Kaitos" series.
Divine Wings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NCQWRh9UZg) – This music is played when you have 3 teams going through a dungeon together. I never thought the 360 could handle this amount of graphic detail and gameplay.
Step Into the New World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsWNfV5428w) – Part of the World Map Theme. When you start venturing into the world (starting you ‘epic’ adventure), this is what plays. I sometimes think that this would also fit nicely as a title theme as well.
Cleaving Blade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCW6OQh8W5s) – Your basic battle theme song.
Ferocious Valor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhfljz1-z9g&feature=PlayList&p=5FA8836D7F53E49A&index=25) – Secret Boss. ^_^

I played Werewolf for the NES. That game was weird. I really hated the stage with the lightning in it.
I mostly enjoy it for its rhythmic "catchiness" although I rather enjoyed the game as well. I love what I have as track 2, which would either be the main theme or level 1, after the intro. The rising melody over the triplet 2 to 1 grouping in the bass is just perfect for the game.
As a side note to Eshvoide, I got Infinite Undiscovery and listened to it today at work. It was AWESOME. Thanks for that!
”Kessen II has some wonderfully dramatic orchestral music which suits the game so well. As you head into battle the music builds and the swords clash together with frightening brutality.”
I’ve always loved this soundtrack for its whimsical, sometimes bouncy themes. I love track 19 (somebody help me with the name? It sounds like an ending credits theme maybe?) although I’m done with it after 2 loops usually. I love the themes for the first couple of levels as well as the main theme. This was one of the games I kinda liked but played a lot because I just fell in love with the music.

FUCK YES YOU ARE THE BEST NINJA GAIDEN GAME EVER
Seriously,this game gets so much shit for all the wrong reasons. I played my copy daily when I was a kid. The thing that stuck out about it was the whole "futuristic techno-ninja fighting hideous mutants and killer robots" bit,which made it very similar in tone to Shinobi III. The change in tone was especially obvious in the music. Suddenly,we went to straight-up techno,even with some trance/rave tossed in there. Damn,I wish there were any remixes of that game’s music out there. I only ever heard one good one. ;_;

Someone already has a good .mp3 version of the stages. I think it’s Wolfy that has them. What stage is Track 19? I almost like every stage except "Nemo’s House" and "Topsy Turvy"
If there’s one person I hold in high regard it’s Hiroyuki Iwatsuki. The man consistantly makes good video game music even to this day, and I mean video game music, not movie music shoe horned into a game. This is game not only had a good soundtrack, but it was pretty fun to play, it’s one the better examples of a licensed video game

I like City, Building and Boss battle. (I think the street fighter one was on the Genesis.) I also like "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" 1st stage.
*edit* Oh, you mean a version that is actually tagged. Yeah, that’s my fault. I don’t really care to tag my NES files, but I probably should go back and do it. I usually remember what they’re from, but I guess obviously I didn’t in this case. I’m too lazy to re-download all of my NES music… Anyway, I really like the soundtrack too!! Thanks for responding to my question about the power rangers game, also!
There was also a MMPR fighting game for the SNES.Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mighty_Morphin_Power_Rangers:_The_Fighting_Edition )
I also like "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" 1st stage.
They’re both amazing soundtracks, some of the best music on the SNES.
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq4LGNGd5ik)
When I was a kid, this game was really hard to find. But I was determined to get it. I had read about it in Nintendo Power and was blown away by the graphics and all of the different ways to customize your parties and level up your characters and the expansive storyline and the prospect of real-time strategy, which seemed so much more exciting than turn-based combat. As an 11-year-old, it didn’t get much better than that. So I called every store in my area and in the surrounding areas and finally managed to hunt down a copy of the game at a FuncoLand near where my cousins lived all the way over in Virginia. The next time we visited, I spent all of my savings (~$100) for it. Fortunately, it didn’t disappoint. What I didn’t expect, though, was how good the music was. Hitoshi Sakimoto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitoshi_Sakimoto), Masaharu Iwata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masaharu_Iwata), and Hayato Matsuo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayato_Matsuo) really nailed the romantic/militaristic blend. There are bouncing timpanis, clanging tubular bells, triumphant brass, and soaring strings all over this soundtrack. But there are also some really nice moody and atmospheric pieces. The arpeggiated harp piece for Warren is probably the best known example, but there are plenty of others, too. Of course, all three composers went on to have great careers, so it has historical importance as well for being an early indication of what they were capable of. The game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deneb_%28the_witch%29) is still a lot of fun if you haven’t played it before.
Phantasy Star 4’s (http://rapidshare.com/files/305122959/PS4.zip) music was awesome for its time. The ambience each track set was perfect for when it was used(Terrible Sight for a burned/abandoned village, Behind the Circuit in mechanical locations, etc). Keep in mind as well that these were only 16 bit tunes on the Genesis. Truly, every byte was squeezed from the cartridge to get not only great animation and story, but also excellent music that pulled you into its world and when you least expected it, punched you in the gut(those who have played PS4 know the exact moment I’m talking about…;__; ).
Check my other posts for links to the other nominations. Oh, and I apologize for those who detest Rapidshare, but it’s the only one that seems to like me. No joke.
Everything’s in the OP, too, with links.

This was an early Genesis game that I remember playing with my next-door neighbor. I can’t exactly recommend it since that was 18 years ago and I haven’t played it since, but I do remember it being an average platformer with some nice graphics and a fun soundtrack. Also of note: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quackshot) tells me this game was released as part of the series that included Castle of Illusion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_of_Illusion_Starring_Mickey_Mouse), World of Illusion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Illusion_Starring_Mickey_Mouse_and_Donald _Duck), and the Lucky Dime Caper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lucky_Dime_Caper). Let me second that game then arthur, since I still have my copy. This was a great game back in the day, utilizing ingeniuos weapons(a popcorn ‘shotgun’, a bubble gum gun, and of course, your main plunger pistol), light puzzles, and some great gameplay and music. My only complaint in this game was that you only got to see Donald’s invincibility(his infamous tantrum) once, and never again. Always bugged me.
Just like with Golden Axe,everyone seems to love the second game in the series, but nobody ever talks about the third one. And that’s bullshit, because I think it’s superior in every way.
And the music is face-meltingly awesome. Can you say double bass on the Genesis?
The Australia theme, which also plays at the title screen:

Sick or FUCKING SICK? I’d kill for an actual live instrumental cover of this.
How about taking the national anthem of the United Kingdom and turning it into something that rocks your goddamn face off? Don Veca, the composer behind this goodness, managed just that:

Rock on,bros. Rock on.
I love the way he uses odd meter in a non-gimmicky way. For example, take "Battle 2" also known as "Warrior of the Reviving Light" and "Main Theme". There is a 7/8 (grouped 3+3+1) that I didn’t even remember being there, and this is probably my favorite game ever (so you can imagine how many times i’ve heard this track.)
This whole soundtrack is just great. I really enjoy "HQ" as well as well as the different presentations of the theme heard in "Mitula’s Shrine" , "Elven Town" , and "Mitula." The main theme gets a couple more representations, like in "piano". "Town" is a chipper little theme that i’ve always enjoyed, as well as "Mithril Daggers" for the same reason. Like I said, I basically love the whole thing…

Total Distortion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pPQnhhUqtU)
I love this soundtrack, not because the music is particularly good, but because the songs are hilarious. The game over screen music linked above is the most well-known track, in which you’re mocked by the game for two and a half minutes for losing. But there’s also "Chunky Love," "Disco Heavy," "Child of Evil," "Hang Your Head," "Death," the self-referential "Saw It Off," and the brilliant and ridiculous "Kitty Cat," which is a 80s synth-pop style ballad that gleefully discusses cats euphemistically–lampooning just about every 80s hair metal band in the process, along with the entire catalog of Kiss.
The music is difficult to find online as far as I’ve seen, although k h insider (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=IA3&q=total+distortion+soundtrack&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g1) has it (click on the top result, since the forum filter prevents me from linking directly).
As far as the game itself, you should probably avoid it. It’s a mid-90s music video generator with a lot of ambition, but also apparently a lot of flaws, too. A Norwegian magazine even declared it the worst game ever, although I haven’t seen any other reaction on that level. Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Distortion)
Here’s a taste of the lyrics:
Thought you were hot. Guess what? You’re not.
You are dead, dead, dead
We brought your whole adventure to a screeching halt.
You are dead, dead, dead
Your heart has stopped and your brain is cold
You are so so dead!
And now your body is starting to mold
You are so so dead!
This dimension cuts like a knife
You are dead, dead, dead
What a pitiful waste of a human life
You are dead, dead, dead
Your heart has stopped and your brain is cold
You are so so dead!
And now your body is starting to mold
You are so so dead!
You are such a sad, sad story
You’re gone empty-head in the red
Game over, you’re through. Gone.
How does it feel to be dead?
Bye bye you’re history, you’re through, you’re dust
I hope you improve your lousy score
Adios, see you later, bye bye
Try again
You are dead, dead, dead
You are dead, dead, dead

One of my very first JRPGs… I love this game so fucking much. ;_; And I still say this is a much better game than the original in every conceivable way. The soundtrack is one of the reasons why.
"Warrior of the Reviving Light" is just magnificent in its sweeping epicness:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d0k4TB2IZM&feature=related
But there is one thing in this game that tops it. And that’s the Promoted Attack theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-DL7DNW_w8
When I hear this,I always imagine promoted Bowie,Force Sword in hand, badass flowing cape, bandanna and all, smiting the shit out of some demon. Either that,or Peter’s promoted Phoenix form wreaking havoc, creating fucking tornadoes with one flap of his wings. Awesome. That crescendo at the beginning really puts the "Force" into "Shining Force". =)
"Welcome to Our Town" is wonderfully lighthearted:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0f1ls0-7L4&feature=related
And goddamn, check out the orchestrated version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3BvpTqWwG0
That sax is <3.
And finally,King Galam battle theme, the second-to-last battle in the game, and one of three hardest ones (it’s been a while,so I’m not sure if it also plays during the final confrontation with Zeon. Would make sense, but I find that fighting Galam is much harder than Zeon,so I tend to associate this track with him a lot more):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTOgRb5cc2E&feature=related
Man,chills all over the place. That relentless madness, that erratic, psychotic pace, those blood-curdling synth screams… You know that SHIT JUST GOT REAL. God,I love this piece…
I also love that characteristic, instantly identifiable percussion that Takenouchi uses in the battle themes and at the beginning of that one track that plays in the castles. Really brings out that whole militaristic march feeling.
EDIT – Found it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abzPtK6U59o
Come to think of it,I don’t really remember hearing any other composers using that particular sample… That’s why as soon as I heard the opening track to Landstalker,I instantly recognized Takenouchi’s touch. =) Seriously,if you loved SF2’s OST,you’ll adore the Landstalker OST. Apparently,Takenouchi did a couple of other games,one being,I believe,Shining Wisdom. I’ve been looking for the soundtrack to that one for a while,but with no luck. ;_;
Oh man,that’d be awesome!
Jewel Master
That was the other game I was thinking of.
I don’t know if you’ve heard the music for the Shining Force games for game gear, which are great. Shining Force Gaiden III: Final Conflict uses most of the same music for Shining Force II with the exception of a few original tracks, but Shining Force Gaiden II: The Sword of Hajya is totally original and I really enjoy it.
I was looking for all of those as well, but I couldn’t even find vgz rips. On a related sidenote, what about Shining Force CD? Does it have arrangements of the themes from the GG games?
Shining Force CD has the same tracks with different sounds. I don’t remember them being arrangements, but I didn’t listen to them much, as I prefer the game gear versions. Anyway, i’ll upload those too. I’m trying to find that PSX game, but no luck.
Anyway, here comes Shining Wisdom, Shining Force Gaiden II: Sword of Hajya, and Shining Force Gaiden III: Final Conflict. Maybe i’ll just put them all in the downloads forum under "Motoaki Takenouchi Collection" after I upload the rest.

We Love Katamari (PS2)
This is one of the most original (and fun to play) games i’ve played in quite a while, and the soundtrack is great, too. So many of these tracks just make me laugh my head off. The goofy english in DiscoXPrince is hilarious and the song is very catchy!! (Put up your hand, and you stand up! discotheque, so funky night!! mixed in with a bunch of japanese lyrics of course) I would recommend listening to the first game’s soundtrack first, as a few of the original songs are re-mixed in this one. KuruKuru Rock bugs the CRAP out of me, but other than that, I find this soundtrack thoroughly enjoyable. Sorry for the lack of youtube links, but you can get the whole soundtrack on gh HERE (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/241). Houston is great, as well as katamari holiday.
I assume ‘Valis’ also means ‘The Fantasm Soldier’? If so, I wholeheartedly agree.
Someday, I’d love to play the original games(all I played were the translation butchered Genesis ports), but for now, the music and my memories will keep.:D
Game was originally released for the GBA then got released and retouched for the PSP. From the people that brought you "Riveria" and "Knight in the Nightmare".

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8Y2A0C8U)
My very first game ins the original PSX, played this game like hell, and took me years to finish it, today I still have it, and every time I listen to the soundtrack my mind just takes me away…
A nice selection of 90’s techno music, that makes the whole atmosphere of the game, it’s like each one of the tracks have it’s own personality.
For bonus, I have the soundtrack of the Japanese release, unlike the US and European version, this one actually has characters and a story line, damn even animated clips!!
This game was way a head of it’s time, and some how…it still is.
A bit off the retro now…
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A24X4EH6)
Released in Europe by the name of "Squadron Leader" this is by far my favorite of the series, enjoyable game all the time. As most of us know, namco always puts an effort on the soundtracks (as far as I know), and this one is just beautiful, it goes from electronic to classic music!
The main theme of the game just blows my mind, and that ending theme gives me chills all the time!
Even after you leave the game, the soundtrack is right there to keep the atmosphere up.
NOTE: Links will come as soon as I get them uploaded with a zip file, in the mean time this should do it.

This was a rather difficult decision, not because there are other games that I could recommend, actually it’s because there aren’t! Looking through all the games I’ve played in the past I only came across this one and it’s sequel. I haven’t played many games starting with the letter B. Never thought that would be a problem. Anyway this is an amazing game with an amazing soundtrack.
Here are some links to various songs:

Make sure to also check out some of the sequel’s music as it is also amazing. I have no idea who made the soundtrack, can’t seem to find anything on the Internet and I’m too lazy to play the game and see whether or not the name of the composer in included in the credits. Enjoy!
Nice work on reviving.
I’m most definitely going to get the hell in on this, as this thread is amazing.
Arthur, I have to give it to you. This is the second thread I’ve seen you start, and both of them have been incredibly entertaining, and insightful. :>
Thanks! That compliment means a lot, but I can’t take any credit. The community is what drives these threads, and this thread is a perfect example of that. Hopefully, it’ll keep going because I’m learning a lot about soundtracks I might not have heard of without these recommendations. Looking forward to you joining us.

Extremely memorable music (okay, maybe not extremely…) from one of the most underrated first-person shooters of all time. STILL criticised by some players of Descent and Descent II as having strayed too far from the game’s original concept of simply blowing up a heavily defended reactor and getting the hell away from it as fast as possible. Mercenary attempts to bring Descent 3 back in line, but it was ultimately not enough.
The worst part of all is Interplay’s apparent refusal to acknowledge it as part of the Descent series. They were the publishers of the game, yet their page (http://www.interplay.com/games/descent.php) for the Descent series does not list it. I would love to view it as an oversight, but I can’t, because they’re using screenshots from Descent 3.
The music for both Descent 3 and Mercenary was composed by Jerry Berlongieri, aka. AutoPilot.

For those of you who haven’t noticed yet, I’m a little obsessed with Motoaki Takenouchi. This soundtrack of his is definitely in an early 90’s electronic rock style, with heavy use of odd meter, himiola (implying two different time signatures at once), dissonance, and AWESOMENESS.
My favorite track from this one is definitely "Stay Alive". The deliberate rhythmic confusion between the bass and the keyboard in the beginning (eighth notes grouped 3+3+2 against…half-note triplets if i’m not mistaken, either way it sounds really cool) is just great and the whole tune is captivating.
"Spiritual Tensions" is also fun, but it might drive you crazy as well. I’m still not entirely sure what is happening rhythmically in the opening of this one, but if it doesn’t make you want to hurt someone you might like it. "Theme of Gungriffon" is also fun. I like the melody spread out across the churning backgrounds.
This youtube playlist seemed to have some of the music, but you can get the whole mp3 set from the link in my signature. (Track 16 is Stay Alive, Track 30 is Spiritual Tensions, and Track 6 is Theme of Gungriffon although "Do or Die" in track 18 is just a reincarnation of it)
Oh ok, that is "Do or die" in the soundtrack. Yeah, I really like this one, even though it is definitely more of a rock style sometimes.
You know that tends to happen a lot, the wrong names in the songs, the FFT OST I first downloaded had the song "Battle on the Bridge" named "Heretics" which in this case I didn’t find it a problem at all, because "Heretics" sounds more proper to me.
Sorry for the huge delay in an update! I was finishing my thesis, which was a year’s worth of work that (as I got close to the finish line) needed 6-10 hour work-days to complete. I owe you guys an apology. BUT I promise I’m going to be more active again. And to start, here’s an "H" soundtrack…
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu301/arthurgolden/half-life2episode1.jpghttp://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu301/arthurgolden/half_life_2_episode_two_dvdcover1.jpg
Half Life 2: Episodes One and Two
For what were essentially expansions of the main game (Valve considered them standalone stories but they only contained about 4-6 hours of action), composer Kelly Bailey (http://www.giantbomb.com/kelly-bailey/72-4462/) really brought his A-game. Vortal Combat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0_Ff6SSv2o), despite having a title that’s kind of a silly play on "Mortal Kombat," is a good showpiece for the rest of the soundtrack. It’s got nicely-layered guitars, a ton of cool effects pedals and synths, loud drums, and short self-contained sections. In 3:15, you get 7 sections of music, which go from the main theme on the guitar, to a breakdown bass-and-drums section, to a series of battling effects pedals, to the main theme again, to a parabolic bass riff, and back to a variation of the main riff, leading into the outro. All of them rock. Guard Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2krbKIbcb0), Abandoned in Place (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrMGhtYLZy0), and Last Legs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOS4SdqXscY) are all awesome, too???although a bit more down-tempo. If you’re into something more electronic, check out Disrupted Original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0Y6irW4UyE). There are also two ambient tracks: Combine Advisory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5woKhlbe18) and Dark Interval (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu25gIS2cjA). And you can round things out with the more upbeat Sector Sweep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4hft34WRYw). This is awesome stuff, which I think is only available on The Orange Box soundtrack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orange_Box), but somebody may know more about that than I do.
Thanks again for all of you who have participated in this thread. Let’s get this going again! 🙂 I’ll get the OP updated asap.
It’s Mr. Pants, an obscure puzzle game based off of Rare’s website mascot.
Here’s one track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bj_I5Up2Oc
And for the "J" Ladies & Gentlemen we have…..
JAZZ JACKRABBIT 1 & 2
A PC platformer game, highly influenced by Sonic(or rather say stolen) & some other Action platformers from that time, like Mega Man, Mario & Castlevania.
The first game it’s like playing sonic but if it were combined with the Action of Mega Man & the creativity of the lvl design of Castlevania with some mario stuff too.
The second game keeps the same style but it also take some stuff of Earthworm Jim too.
All this stuff combined together obviously with a completely different setting.
But one of the most remakable things on this games is the music, it definetely is something to be reckoned.
So let’s start:
This little masterpiece saw the light in 1994, the music was composed by Robert A. Allen & Joshua Jensen.
It features some great tunes, some with Jazzy sound(hence the title), other with some electronic music, with some great melodies, awesome basslines, nice choirs & a great energy.
These are some of that I love.
Title Screen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24TPyIGS_YI)
Diamondus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75HhDf7SjA8)
Tubelectric (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2idyeFWdmA) Awesome song with some great Lead Synth & awesome bass line.
Medivo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWHu79H6kdM) This is probably my personal fauvorite, it has great choirs & nice sounds with wonderful melodies & nice atmosphere.
& our next one…
This wonderfully well done sequel borns in 1998, it presented a new graphics design & a new composer, the composer for this game is Alexander Brandon, the same person that did the music for Unreal, Unreal Tournament & Deus Ex.
The compositions here present a change of direction, the sound is more "modernized", in a manner of speaking. Check this out.
Castles n’ Rabbits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVHVNAkyMIE) love this track definetely one of my fauvorites in the whole series.
Carrotus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKNnwCSuFFg)
Medieval Jam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZbboXd-05E) Love this song too!
Jazz Belmont (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqXoU5tcgns) Any resemblance to castlevania is purely coincidental (Blatant Lies xD)
So this is Jazz Jackrabbit, a game which I love, part of my childhood & I always loved it’s music, If you like the music of this game & if also you are an addict to Platformers, go & get this one, because it’s worth it.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Because international sales were low (although reviews were favorable) during this game’s initial PS1 release in 1997, it was re-made for the Wii in 2008 to increase its profile. But the game’s sales lagged again. It’s primarily been marketed to children, which may explain why I didn’t hear about it until a few years ago, when someone recommended the soundtrack to me. And I’m glad they did. Both this and the game’s sequel, Lunatea’s Veil, have many great songs, but I went with this one because I like almost the entire soundtrack. Listen to Blue & Lephise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nV6VMXqnlnY) and The Rongo Longo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0zwkbGL0n0) and you can get a sense of the silliness that’s in some of the songs (appropriate for children). But there’s also a darker, more serious side to much of the music, allowing for a diversity that feels organic, which is incredible considering the game had 9 (!) composers that all had to work together: Eriko Imura, Kohta Takahashi, Junko Ozawa, Tetsukazu Nakanishi, Kanako Kakino, Takaki Horigome, Hiromi Shibano, Hiroshi Okubo, and Tomoko Tatsuta. It’s hard to think of another soundtrack with credits as extensive as that. Check out some of their best work here:
Count Three (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jauQZQQ5cp8)
Fly over the Wind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-amUMNt1jFY)
The Closing Encounter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIY3OvVN0os)
Blue Cave Echo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMoRgXPfQyg)
Nevertheless (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQQ6GnGqZ9c)
Beats from Above (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFaWb8VxfoA)
I’m on Your Side (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U_HFQdyKeQ)
Both the original and remade versions of the game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klonoa:_Door_to_Phantomile) are supposed to be fun and easy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQgJiiOWi60) platformers, so if you play them, let me know if either seems worth picking up.
P.S. By the way, thanks to Rock Lobster and topopoz for their posts! I listened to both soundtracks and enjoyed both.
Here are 2 songs from Mario & Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story from the RPG Sound Selection that I like the most:
SHOW TIME! (Bowser’s Battle Theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fl2Vve45X7k)
Oki Doki!! (Mario Bros. Battle Theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leCx-K8eLG0)
Gimme half an hour to whip something together. =)
EDIT:
L is for LANDSTALKER!
A true gem of the Genesis library,a wonderful little action-RPG starring an adventurous green-tunic’d elf treasure hunter and his fairy sidekick. If that’s starting to sound familiar, you’re not the only one,as some people refer to Landstalker as a "poor man’s Zelda on the Genesis."
Fuck those people.
This game is just as good (and while we’re on the subject of Sega’s action-RPGs,Beyond Oasis >>> Link to the Past. Oh yeah,I went there). And one of the main reasons it rocks so much is the soundtrack.
Back when I was a wee lad and first got wind of this game, and wasn’t as knowledgeable about VGM as I am now,I was still able to get a certain familiar vibe from it. And just like Naoki Kodaka’s NES OSTs are instantly identifiable by the custom driver he uses, certain things about the soundtrack made me think of an old favorite of mine,Shining Force II,which I ranted about earlier in the thread. After doing some research, turns out I was right – both games were composed by Motoaki Takenouchi – marking this as one of the first times I was able to identify a composer purely by the style. :3 Needless to say,I was pretty proud of myself back then.
As I said before,it’s extremely fucking annoying that the only track from this game that people bother uploading to Jewtube is Seeking Treasure, which can generally be considered the main overworld theme. Don’t get me wrong,it’s wonderful and is certainly one of the more memorable tracks from the game, but it’s not my most favorite from the game. Nevertheless, here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TsoAwSdXKQ
*some searching later*
Fuck year, turns out somebody did upload the whole soundtrack! And it’s the arranged version! Personally,I like the sharp beats straight outta the good old Genesis YM2612 more, but these arranges are very lose to the original.
Now,as far as my favorites are concerned, they both happen to be among the very first tracks you ever hear in the game.
This little number right here,Premonition of Trouble, plays in the very first dungeon you actually play through. It’s been a really long time since I last played this, but I seem to recall that, leaning against the wall right next to the entrance there’s a skeleton of the last treasure seeker who dared to explore this cave. Despite the fact that it looks like an obvious trap, you can examine it and whack it with your sword, but nothing happens. It’s just there to unnerve you :3. Premonition of trouble indeed. Although I also seem to recall that some of the skeletons you see later in the cave actually do get up and attack you, making you shit bricks the first time it happens. Anyway, the track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK5uNBwke8Q&feature=related
This track is actually a medley of a bunch of tracks from the very beginning of the game. It even has a little jingle that plays at the title screen, just like in SFII. My second fave is Labyrinth, which plays up until about the 2:50 mark. Labyrinth plays during the intro demo, showing an AI-controlled Nigel (or Lyle as he’s called in the JP version) braving the perils and booby traps of a dungeon, running away from giant Indiana Jones-style boulders, climbing vines and hopping across crevasses to eventually reach a altar with a golden statue, giving you a pretty good glimpse of what to expect from the game. That awesome crescendo around 0:22… It’s just so Takenouchi,I fucking love it. =))) Anyway, here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJU91wbsHiI&feature=related
BTW,if you feel like checking out that ADVENTURE-PACKED intro, this video should do:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sfOTk54AMQ&feature=related
Goddamn, this entry is several months too late. Sorry about that, guys, carry on now. =)
Before I go, I have 3 songs from the game and here they are:
Start Grid #1 (GP & VS) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub2UN7dthIY&fmt=18)
Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRRjsJ_sCd0&fmt=18)
Circuit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XcfWVKXrAA&fmt=18)
So, get in your kart, rev up your engines and… 3, 2, 1… GO!!
Napple Tale
This was a Japan-only 2.5D platform game for the Dreamcast. But more importantly, its soundtrack was composed by Yoko Kanno. I’ve never played the game, and it doesn’t have reviews posted at MetaCritic or Wikipedia, so I don’t know if it’s any good. But you can watch a playthrough here (http://www.youtube.com/user/G0EMONB0Y#p/p/B34FE1EF54AE5CAB/0/ZwF-exwlOU4). What I do know is that the soundtrack is excellent. With a lot of choruses, melodic percusion, and playful orchestral arrangements, it shows a strong influence from Danny Elfman and maybe Nino Rota before him. Some of my favorite pieces are…
Chocolate Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqfwrfPqEds)
Ball Jar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEoxSpfeGZ4)
Rabbit Bed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31FYpyssnRE)

The classic 1986 arcade racing game from SEGA sported one of the grooviest and iconic VGM tracks of all time. It was actually one of the first games where players could pick their background music and with that smooth mix of jazz and synths by composer Hiroshi Miyauchi, the player was spoiled for choice.
Even though my favourite incarnation of the Out Run soundtrack belongs to the C64 version – Turbo OutRun by U.S. Gold (1989) (http://www.c64.com/hvsc/MUSICIANS/T/Tel_Jeroen/Turbo_Outrun.sid) (C64 .SID file) – the core themes from that original arcade version remain timeless;

* Magical Sound Shower (FM 69.2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxcVk6ygHVE)

I’m not ready to call it quits on "Q" on the first run-through. But it doesn’t sound like we have a whole lot of options in the future.
Round 2:
I spent about a half-hour this evening looking up every "Q" game from every major console. Boy, it is really slim pickings. But I’ll put this one up and maybe we’ll just retire "Q" the next time around.
I think it’s time. Let’s skip "Q" from now on. And if by some chance someone has a "Q" soundtrack, they can post it even after we move on to "R" and beyond.
So we’re on "R" now…and go!
For the letter R, we have Resident Evil! This game soundtrack has plenty of horror. For the best, you should play the game.
And for the letter S, we have… SUPER MARIO GALAXY!
In this game soundtrack, we have the best songs from the game and the music for this game is composed by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo. The orchestral piece is performed by the Mario Galaxy Orchestra.
Some of the songs include: The Star Festival, Rainbow Mario, Get Star Chance, and Super Mario Galaxy!
So, this soundtrack is out of this galaxy!
TYRIAN!

That’s right we are in front of probably the best space ship shooter game in history, The gameplay is amazing, released in 1995, the game features a fantastic system of tunning your ship to your tastes, the game a surprisingly deep storyline & on hell of a weird universe. It’s just Amazing. The music of course doesn’t stay behind at all, Composed by Alexander Brandon, it features some suprising compositions that blew our minds with their weird melodies & epic mood…
One interesting fact here is that Also Alexander Brandon was behind in all the writing of the game storyline, scenario & characters. So we are not just only in front of a talented musician but also a great writer.
Here we have some songs!…

Or we can let Garudoh abridge the soundtrack in 11 mins – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCSZfVC2tR0
Aw, I have a title for Q that had a really awesome soundtrack – but I’ll save it for RIGHT NOW!
Q is for QUEST FOR GLORY: SHADOWS OF DARKNESS!
From 1993, this fourth entry in Sierra On-Line’s classic RPG/Adventure game series left a bittersweet taste in the mouth of many fans whose enjoyment in the story, artwork and music was offset by the confusing battle system and the many infamous BUGS that were left in the game!
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadows_of_Darkness): "Most notable of these bugs was “Error 52.” Well known among game fans, Error 52 occurred mostly when running the game on newer machines. Appearing during one of the games later battles against a Chernovy, the bug precluded victory. Another notable bug “Error 47” occurred under similar conditions, however it appeared earlier in the game. This bug also made the game unwinnable."

An ambitious project from the start, Quest for Glory IV sports a versatile soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges (http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,3717/) that hits you right from the start with its haunting, Howling-esque theme music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCGDXGl6Htk).
The whole soundtrack is available from Quest Studios (http://www.queststudios.com/quest/qfg4.html) who have been around for years extracting Sierra soundtracks from their games.
This story begins in 1998. There have been increased reports of UFO sightings around the world. Tales of abduction and terrorism by the aliens are becoming widespread. But all attempts to stop the aliens have failed miserably. Thus, on December 11, 1998, representatives from the most powerful nations in the world meet in Geneva, Switzerland, to form the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit (X-COM), an air and ground attack force you take control of in…
UFO: Enemy Unknown
If you haven’t played this PC strategy game (also known as X-COM: UFO Defense), then you are missing out. I don’t normally play strategy games, and I didn’t pick this one up until last year–15 years after its release. But it is completely addicting. Some of its awards include the #1 spot on IGN’s Top 25 PC Games of All Time list, #8 on PC Gamer’s 50 Best Games of All Time list, and #3 on Computer Gaming World’s Best Games of All Time list.
You start with a map of the earth and have to decide where you want your home base to be and what you want to put in it. The equipment to detect UFOs is, of course, extremely important because sooner or later you’ll get these screens…
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu301/arthurgolden/ufo4ap8.gif
At this point, you have to send out your jets to locate and shoot down a UFO (the battle is shown in the second picture). If you win, the game then switches to the ground troops’ battle map, which looks like this…
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu301/arthurgolden/ufo2.gif
As you can tell, you start off crowded inside your transport and have to venture out into rural areas and cities, too, clearing away the darkened areas of the map where the aliens are lurking. Eventually, you’ll find their crashed ship, shown in the second picture, where several will be waiting inside. You have to kill them, but if you’re lucky you’ll be able to collect their bodies, the power sources for their ships, and other artifacts to help your scientists research their advanced technology. Ultimately, as you learn more about the aliens and their home planet, you’ll be able to equip your soldiers with new guns, armor, and explosives and attack their biggest ships…
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu301/arthurgolden/ufo3.gif
But none of this would be terrifying or gripping without the music. John Broomhall’s soundtrack is simplistic and all the more effective for it, using sparse, quiet, long pieces to eat away at the player’s nerves. Quite often, you’ll be playing and then a little flutter of notes or a low-pitched groan will rise up and bump up the tension about a thousand notches. It’s a credit both to him and to the game’s producers that you can put in thirty hours, watch the ending, and come right back for another run-through. Here are some of my favorite tracks. Hope you enjoy!

I’ve never played SimCity 3000 myself, but I do own SimCity 4, and I find the music in SimCity 3000 to be a lot better than SimCity 4’s, especially the ones in Unlimited.

EDIT: By the way Delimis, THANK YOU! for the links to download the Game’s Music. =D
DragonBreath, you can also Edit your post if you wish.
Yeah, if you have a post ready to go, that sounds good. You can post your "R," and if dragonbreath20k edits his we’ll just skip "R" next time. Does that sound fair to everyone?
So topopoz, you post an "R" and then the next one will be "V" for whoever wants it. 😀
Thank you for the permission Arthur now here goes the "R"
I think Everyone remembers the movies of Conan The Barbarian & The Destroyer, an Iconic Character of the 80’s that influenced a lot of games, Cultures, Storylines & Character Design…
Well, there’s a Certain Character among the Arcades & he’s name is Rastan & his game is called of course… Rastan Saga
That’s right, this Character is the most representative & influenced character based on Conan & the game is fantastic, we are in front of an action-platformer game that has some fantastic level design & one hell of a difficulty, we encounter mythology creatures everywhere & the music is just my god, I’ve never heard anything like this on any Arcade game from that time. Developed by Taito there’s 3 games of this saga.
I’m particularly familiar with the first game only, but I’m going to make some research on the music of the sequels as well.
Here we have the Complete Soundtrack of the game in 10 mins aprox, the game has little number of tracks, but they’re High Quality Compositions in the hands of Naoto Yagishita & Masahiko Takaki.
Here ya go! – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DdXI0oYZGQ
EDIT: I hope that I did it just fine XD.
From the same composer as the Double Dragon NES games, V’Ball (Superspike V’ball in the US) is one of the very few sports games I have played and has a very fun soundtrack. It’s mostly enjoyable to me for the fun rhythmic backgrounds, but there are good melodies to be had in these tracks as well. The soundtrack is light, but very enjoable. The game itself had was not terribly difficult, but not so easy as to be boring. I still enjoy playing it, and I listen to this one quite a bit, actually…

WIZBALL – MARTIN GALWAY!
Here’s a blast from the past – developed by Sensible Software in 1987 for the C64 and other computer systems, Wizball was a side-scroller where players took control of a friendly wizard aptly named Wiz who transformed into a little green ball who can shoot and fly around on the moon shooting enemies in order to save something from someone evil.
According to Mobygames (http://www.mobygames.com/game/wizball): "The player starts out as a bouncing green ball that can shoot and be put into more or less heavy rotation to move slowly or faster, physically correct through the side-scrolling levels. The first task is to upgrade the ball by shooting the first non-moving enemies, and collect the green bubbles that are left by them. In order to stand a chance against the following moving enemy waves, some upgrades are a must. First and foremost, complete control over the ball should be activated (i.e. flying through the levels), a shield sheltering the top and bottom of the player’s should be acquired, and two-way fire (left/right) should be obtained.
But the extra needed to advance in Wizball is your friend Catelite who will, once summoned, take the form of a small green satellite that will imitate the ball’s movement, or can be directly controlled by the player. Besides upping Wiz’ fire power, Catelite is able to collect paint drops left by a certain kind of defeated enemies until the respective color pot is filled up. There’s three colors available (red, green and blue), and several different combinations of them must be collected to complete a level and restore it to former colorfulness. Every color combination collected will send Wiz to a bonus stage, then to his laboratory where one of the power-ups can be made permanently."
Not a bad little game at all – but the soundtrack is phenomenal. Composed by gaming music veteran and legend, Martin Galway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Galway), Wizball sports an array of chiptune classics that are like butter through your ear drums… Never have beeps and boops been so epic, especially the TITLE TRACK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlDTKH7_bZ4), that introduces you to the game with a sense you’re about to embark on something special. The Duck Tale’s Moon Theme has nothing on this track! Another track I enjoyed is the high score music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b-dlc0nAlI) which I think of as the "love theme" from Wizball.
The entire soundtrack can be downloaded HERE (http://www.c64.com/hvsc/MUSICIANS/G/Galway_Martin/Wizball.sid). (C64 .SID file – requires SIDPLAY)
Otherwise, you can try Mirsoft (http://www.mirsoft.info/gmb/search.php?search=wizball&x=0&y=0) for some .mod, .mid and arranged remixes.

I don’t know if this has been posted already, but this definitely needs to be here. I haven’t actually played the game but it’s soundtrack is definitely impressive. I’ll play it if I get the chance to. Here’s a link to the playlist:

Well I’ll do Y… Why? Because I get to mention…
YOSHI’S STORY (1998) (http://www.mobygames.com/game/n64/yoshis-story) – KAZUMI TODAKA
*okay, let’s just wait for the collective groan to die down…*
I thought the soundtrack to this game was cool so :P. Well, at the time it conflicted with audiences – especially with the generation of gamers who grew up with the NES, SNES or Sega and were high schoolers already with mature games like Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and DOOM under their belt. To them they thought Nintendo was becoming quite the evil empire like Disney and the N64 was a system strictly for little children. So when Yoshi’s Story came out it must have caused a huge conflict of interest – I mean, here’s a sequel to a SNES game that retains a traditional 2D side scrolling style that the 16bit generation is acquainted with plus some really nice beefed up graphics, but… IT’S SO CHILDISH!
It’s kind of a bold proposition posed by the game designer – the gamer had to decide whether he or she was too mature to play the game or whether they should just give in and appreciate the style. Those that chose the former went to the PSX (and eventually won out), those that chose the latter were rewarded to a real gem of game that was really committed to its playful storybook theme. This playfulness extends to Todaka’s soundtrack that verges on lullabies at times but always injects an element of humour before it becomes all too embarrassing to listen to. The best example of this is the funky Yo-Yo-Yoshi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=648fkNsFKoY).
A vast majority of the score is simply a variation of Yoshi’s Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2c1qLVb2JI) but it allows for many creative variations – some of my favourites are Aplina Blue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyNoXljIxoo), the Raymond Scott-esque Games of Happiness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac71GDB-osg) and the amazingly relaxing Love is in the Air (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS74ixjy7PA).
The entire soundtrack is available in .mp3 format from Kingdom Hearts Insider. (Google search "yoshi’s story kingdom hearts insider")

Gimme a minute to whip a post together…
You know, some of the best games I ever played I found pretty much completely by accident. I didn’t intentionally hunt them down or camped out on Ebay waiting for them to pop up. No,some of the best games I ever played I picked out in one of my many bargain bin raids at a local Gamestop. A good chunk of the best games I ever played I only payed like 5$ for. Wild Arms 3,Genma Onimusha,Headhunter…
Alter Echo.
In terms of visuals and overall mood,AE is like a mix of Metroid and Vectorman. On crack. O_o The semi-sentient planet you’re exploring has some of the most wonderfully acidic color palettes I’ve seen in a game. When you’re swarmed by a wave of enemies, and then you turn into your alien lizard stealth form, blend into your surroundings like a chameleon, swiftly crawl past the dumbfounded enemies, pounce on them, then shapeshift into your Heavy Weapons form – a gigantic, lumbering bipedal beetle thing armed with a fucking Liefeld gun and blow everything to hell, and shit starts exploding all around you,the game feels like an intergalactic rave.
And the music fits this pandemonium of awesome perfectly.
Wait, before I get to the music, let me just say that this game has probably the steadiest difficulty curve I’ve seen in a game. Every level or so a game throws a new type of enemy at you, which is more often that not immune to the attacks of one of your forms and requires an individualized approach, and the enemy waves are carefully organized in such a way as to make you utilize your entire arsenal of moves. At the beginning, you can just cheese everything with your sword-wielding regular form, towards the end of the game, you’ll have to use EVERYTHING. Constantly cycling through all three forms, charge attacks,mid-grapple shapeshifting… I completely forgot that my lizard form even had an invisibility mode until I was starting to get my ass kicked later in the game for not using it. Hell,I was barely even using the time shift or whatever ability because I thought I was too kool for skool (personally,I blame the Shinobi games, where saving all of your ninpos until the end of the stage resulted in pretty massive bonuses). Towards the end,I had to use it all the time, because the game not only forced me to use it,it required me to use it strategically just to survive. And that’s great.
Oh,and did I mention that the voice acting is fucking awesome, too?
Okay,I’ll shut up about the game now. :3
As as I said before, the music fits the psychedelic action like a glove. As far as I can tell (and I have absolutely zero musical education,so bear with me here),it’s a juicy,thumping,kick-ass mix of trance and electronica, with some rave tossed for good measure. There is actually an OST available for the game, which by itself is a miracle considering how obscure it really is,but the six tracks it contains appear to be medleys, because as far as I can recall, the actual tracks in the game consist of looped fragments of these. The tracks themselves are fucking huge. The shortest one is 6 minutes, the longest one is like 14 (!). But if you’re worried about the possibility of them being repetitive, like one of them extended 40-minute nightclub cuts of some techno tracks with the same section looped over and over, trust me when I say this OST is nothing like that. In fact,I don’t think any part of any of these tracks loops even once. There’s always a sense of progression. The tracks seamlessly blend from one completely different rhythm to another, shifting tempo, melody and mood on the fly. Don’t take my word for it,give the whole OST a listen:
http://rapidshare.com/files/385923674/Alter_Echo_Original_Soundtrack.rar.html
Unfortunately, nobody uploaded the OST to Jewtube yet. ;_; If you don’t mind listening to music over the gameplay, here’s a Let’s Play of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bRtYI0RvNI&feature=related
Start from 2:20. That’s the first track from the soundtrack,Beneath the Skin.
Track #3,Forced to the Surface (from the 0:20 mark onward):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z23SUQS7Uk&feature=related
Track #4,Deep Down:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkxWfhVhd0Y&feature=related
EDIT:
Unless you feel like checking out the gameplay, forget the Youtube shit! I randomly googled it up,and it turns out that the composer of this awesomeness,Jerry Berlongieri, was awesome enough to stream the whole soundtrack on his MagnaTune page. Check it out:
http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/birdy-alter/
One of my favorite parts of the game was an little bonus video that shows a glimpse of the work he had to do on the audio aspect of the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar_AxP0qkaA
You know how the lightsaber sound originated from a garbled recording of like a spectrometer or something? My favorite part of the vid is where Berlongieri shows what kind of regular household objects he got all of those weird sound samples out of. =)
Also, the video with the behind-the-scenes stuff is really cool 😀
That’s Right People we are talking about a Classic title for the PSX that was later ported to PC & N64.
Biohazard 2 or Resident Evil 2.
Biohazard sounds more appropriate considering the storyline of the series.
Anyway back on topic.
I love this game, it’s my fauvorite in the series.
We play 2 scenarios with 2 characters, a perfect bondage between the storylines & understanding of the plot from different perspectives.
The game was a great step foward from it’s previous title, it featured improvements on the gameplay, a better crafted graphics, awesome monster design, not one single character is forgetable, they’re all great.
The Storyline is also one of the most remarkable things, the conception, how the events turn & how advances is great, there are 2 scenarios & we play in both of them with two characters, two perspectives for each scenario, that makes 4 playthroughs, it was just fantastic.
The voice acting was also something remarkable, I loved every voice actor, you can understand every word they are saying & even though there are some parts that acted badly, they are memorable.
Did I say that it’s my fauvorite on the series? Well it is, because it even has the best soundtrack in all the series too IMO, the compositions are very thrilling, orchestrated & bombastic sound with a great sense of melody, moving you as the cutscenes go, mysterious & creppy sounds while you are playing detective figuring your way through the game. Even more orchestral operatic bombastic explosive melodies in boss fights. It was just the perfect soundtrack for a classic survival horror game, the best atmosphere you could ask for this game.
The game developed by Capcom, the Music was composed by Masami Ueda, Syusaku Uchiyama & Shun Nishigaki.
Considering that there are so many songs on this soundtrack that are fauvorites I will put it on categories…
Cutscenes
The Beginning Of The Story:
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1a1SfmKlyY) Some parts of this track have silence, listen closely the beautiful short melody that starts around 2:36, also watch the first FMV if you can.
Leon with Claire: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGxpKzhVl-c) This track is short, mellow, soft & very touching.
Annette’s Recollection: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_caDtCpuyMM) I love this track, it plays on a FMV too. The thrilling, bombastic, yet tragic mood is great.
Here comes a series of tracks that I love to listen one way through.
Is Ada Spy? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB23aUBvCjk)
Good Bye, Leon… (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwp-pAZJbwk)
Mother (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgjJWxce1Ck)
One More Kiss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v4pAtaFNdE)
These four tracks are played on scenes that resolve around a certain events of the games storyline where all the characters come to play & it’s amazing how perfectly captured is the feelings, the situation & the cirumstances on every song.
Ambience Songs
Raccoon City: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi_eEOEzs7E) Fire, destroyed town, wrecked cars & Zombies around you.
The Front Hall: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7JECkVzuq0) You feel safe in a police station, relaxing yourself after near death experiences with zombies.
Secure Place: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPVrizQOma4) Take your time there, save your game & be prepared.
The Library: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nUx6aotQXc) Mysterious things are going on around here, be cautious.
The Marshalling Yard – The First Half: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oo1txvfbFyc) Interesting track, a lot of ambience & yet some weird sounds on it, I can’t describe this song in the right way, give it a listen.
Escape From Laboratory: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfByN8H8BgE) Hurry up, the clock is ticking, while orchestral hits, bombastic sound & tragic melodies tells you that you’re near the end.
Boss Battles.
The Second Malformation of G: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckr77MjcHio) Probably my fauvorite track, is amazing it starts fast then it goes faster & it puts your fingers on the pad, grab your biggest gun & shoot. Short, heavy & Epic!.
The Third Malformation of G: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar0YMy7P9Mc) Opera comes in play while your doing your last effort & last fight before you can see the End.
"T"-B: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY4se64acKA) This track is also fantastic, it starts with a short Hymn, then it explodes keeps this growing adrenaline in your bloodstream.
Prologues & Credits Roll
Prologue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJxr3h98xwY) This one is like a tragic March in a rainy night. The use of percussion & strings is amazing.
Prologue – To Know The True End: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSi0Jcjg0GE) I love the melody of the Piano, catchy, gentle & touching.
Credit Line ~ Ending Theme: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN6WlIY0wr4) I can’t really say much about this one, but it the kind sad credit line song for a drama.
But Credit Line of Whole Staff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0zlXQdc4X8) is more positive & moving, Funky bass, rock guitars. Headbang on this one!
That’s it about this one, I’ve put a lot of effort on doing this really. I love this game in it’s entirety & I really hope that you’ve enjoyed this post! =D
Which reminds me,I should get back to playing the game. I had to put it away like a month ago because of the insane workload, but I can finally finish it now. It’s been like 10 years since I last played it before that,so I was coming in pretty much fresh,it was totally awesome. :3
Safe Room Tracks XD!
Yeah they are really relaxing…
Smarty, do you still want the "C"?
Each and every Command and Conquer game has an extraordinary soundtrack starting all the way from the original to the latest Command and Conquer 4. I’m only gonna post 3 games’ soundtracks because if I posted them that would be too many. I’m just gonna post my favorites. Starting with:
and it’s expansion:
Both have fantastic soundtracks by Frank Klepacki. Both are sort of hard-rock/funk/electro styled and overall they’re all great. Here are some of the better tracks.
From Red Alert 2:
Grinder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7jSig5_N3o)
Blow it Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE36tkU9br0&feature=related)
Hell March 2 (]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WqwFhX6Cqg&feature=related)
and from Yuri’s Revenge:
Brain Freeze (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGa0Dfwu0Kk&feature=related)
Drok (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBhfwUF1kdU&feature=related)
Deceiver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnN04tyUOvk&feature=related)
They are all from the same uploader and his channel has the rest of the songs if you’re interested. Moving on to:
and it’s expansion
As of this game, Frank Klepacki no longer is making the music for C&C so a difference in style is expected and is also, in this case very welcome. Generals’ soundtrack is more orchestrated and keeps the same sort of rock/electro feel at time, and suits the 3 teams very well. Those teams are the USA, China and GLA (terrorists). Here are some of the best:
For Generals:
USA Battle Theme 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4aPMo7TcR8)
USA Battle Theme 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_jeLL4SJZ8&feature=related)
China Battle Theme 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9paYyW_vLo&feature=related)
China Idle Theme 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdB-O_PRnL4&feature=related)
GLA Idle Theme 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8EHrRL6efE&feature=related)
GLA Battle Theme 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2p9Lckj3pc&feature=related)
and from Zero Hour:
Raid in Progress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CphuM0Gd78)
Helix Armada (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5PkbaDL0uc&feature=related)
Once again the rest of the songs from both soundtracks can all be found on the same channel. And now last but not least:
and it’s expansion
Now the soundtracks are once again different. These are mostly orchestral with a little synth and I think it works in their advantage, because they fit the game perfectly. Here are some of the best: (These tracks are no longer different for each team)
From Tiberium Wars:
Apocalypse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_44Rt_X1Ow)
Black Dawn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHcwScSj7-8&feature=related)
Tiberian Influx (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJqnXWdfg0o&feature=related)
Deadly Force (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkqFhfO0l3k&feature=related)
Intelligence
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxFd55uXpgw&feature=related)
and from Kane’s Wrath: (This one isn’t so orchestral. Kane is back and he’s pissed. The soudntrack makes sure to let us know :D)
Act on Instinct Remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMGce58sqi4)
Mechanical Mind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buIhqCZQMKc&feature=related)
Once again the rest of the track from both soundtracks can be found on the same channel. I hope you guys enjoyed. It’s been a pleasure sharing Command and Conquer and I’m sorry for the excruciatingly long post!
Alright, so who’s gonna do a "D"?
Motoaki Takenouchi
This is I believe the third Motoaki Takenouchi soundtrack i’ve put on this thread, but I just love him to bits, so bear with me…
Double Moon Densetsu is a beastly, traditional JRPG that looks very similar to Dragon Quest. I thought it was strange before listening to this soundtrack that Motoaki Takenouchi had arranged the symphonic synth suites for Koichi Sugiyama’s EVO Search for Eden, but some of these tracks are very similar to something Sugiyama could have written for an early Dragon Quest game. If there are any NES games that could be classified as a heaver listening experience, this could be.
I find it surprising that there isn’t some arranged synthy orchestral-style version of this album, because it already seems to lend itself quite well to that genre. I’ve never played the game, and there is very little information online about it.
Almost none of the music is on youtube (except for this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im3iuqdue8M and this gameplay video with very audible music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO2cgJSMWYY ) , but I have the soundtrack available in my thread (see my signature). Like I already said, some of the tracks sound like Dragon Quest (like 1, and maybe 5 and 27) , a couple sound quite like a "sad theme" from a shining force(or landstalker) game (11,14) , but all are enjoyable.
I hope you enjoy Double Moon Densetsu!
Edit: Here is a mediafire mirror of the soundtrack for those who would avoid rapidshare: http://www.mediafire.com/?oyzyxmdiy3m (Archive extracts correctly, no errors, downloaded it to check)

EarthBound Zero
by Keiichi Suzuki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keiichi_Suzuki_%28composer%29) and Hirokazu Tanaka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirokazu_Tanaka)
Most people probably know EarthBound (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EarthBound), the hilarious SNES RPG released in 1994 by HAL, which had an iconic blend of classic Hip Tanaka melodies and atmospheres and Keiichi Suzuki’s mad scientist arrangements, characterized by breakneck shifts in rhythm and the sudden appearance of little percolating clusters of notes. It’s also a historically important soundtrack for being the first to use vibrato. :smrt:
What people may not be familiar with, though, is the music of EarthBound Zero (also known as Mother) for the NES, since the game wasn’t released outside Japan until the 2003 GBA port. Both the soundtrack and the game are classics for the system. This is where many of the tropes of the series started, including the rural America setting, the unusual weapons (like yo-yos and frying pans), and the insane enemies (strung-out hippies and possessed cars come to mind).
The story should be familiar, too. When strange, ghostly things begin to happen, a boy named Ninten sets out to investigate. He quickly finds that he has psychic abilities and a mysterious past. He is joined by several friends who aid him in his final goal, which is to defeat the vengeful alien known as Giegue. However, to defeat Giegue and to discover an ancient family secret, he must recover eight mysterious melodies with superb power.
What’s interesting about the game is that it wasn’t released in America despite its popularity in Japan (it eventually sold 400,000 copies), the investment made in its localization (it was translated to English, censored to meet Nintendo’s North American regulations, and even given a different ending), and the extensiveness of the promotional plans. You can read more about that here (http://www.lostlevels.org/200407/200407-earthbound.shtml). It’s really an interesting story.
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu301/arthurgolden/eggym1wp.gif
What’s also interesting is how many of the songs from EarthBound and Mother 3 started here. I won’t spoil the listening experience, but fans of the series will have a lot to pick up on, as well as a lot of new tracks, too. This is a massive soundtrack that gave the composers trouble when they tried to fit it all on the game’s cartridge.
It also had a seriously impressive list of names attached. Besides Tanaka (Kid Icarus, Metroid, Dr. Mario), Michael Nyman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Nyman) did a vocal arrangement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghZpyHP7B_g) of "Eight Melodies" for the soundtrack’s release. If you don’t know, Nyman is a famous minimalist composer, perhaps best known for his gorgeous score for the film The Piano (one example out of many: "Big My Secret" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff_NJvIY8RQ)). At my wedding, the moms and grandmas actually walked down the aisle to the above song, so that music has a special place in my heart.
Anyway, you can find more fun facts here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthbound_Zero), including the origin of the title “Mother.” But for now let’s get to the music! Hope you enjoy!

The game’s slogan: "No crying until the ending."
Also jakob, Doulbe Moon Densetsu was a good listen. I’ve heard better from the NES but this was pretty decent. I’ll give Earthbound a good listen while I’m here right now.
We could do a "#" category before "A," but I could see that slowing us down after one or two rounds. It makes more sense to me to lump numbers in with the other letters.

Let us resurrect this amazing thread, I want to skip doing P because G is for…….
GUN BULLET (A.K.A. POINT BLANK!!!) – Namco – 1994
Composers: Takayuki Aihara, Ishikavan, Hiroto Sasaki (Saman)
Yikes, where do we begin? I know, I’ll let these gamers who posted on rec.games.video.sony in 1997 (http://groups.google.com.au/group/rec.games.video.sony/browse_thread/thread/e7719fc668f9eb38/31ddc7699a0516ad?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=%22point+blank%22+%22gun+bullet%22#31ddc7699a051 6ad), talking about the Playstation adaptation of the classic arcade game, tell you all about it: (Thank you Google Groups archive!)
Man I can’t believe I passed this game up in the arcade. This game is soooooooooo addicting, especially since its two players as well. We played this for so many hours straight this evening…
Could you explain what this game is? I love Time Crisis but I’ve never seen Point Blank and I have no idea what the game is about. Is it 3D?
Point Blank (aka Gun Bullet) is a shooting game, but it is not 3D. It is more like a carnival shooting game, where you get different "levels" with different objectives. Some examples include Shooting all the numbers from 1 thru 16 in order, shooting a bunch of standups, shooting just the red targets, hitting a target which looks like X, Killing all the piranahs before they eat your guy. There isn’t a plot, really. In fact, if I had to compare to a game I’ve seen, i would say it is like Police Trainer (only without the stupid police motiff).
I like it better than Time Crisis. In TC, the enemies are always in the same place, and the game gets old after a while. In this game, the levels are always different. I’d say this is the best gun game I’ve played, arcade or not.
Thank you Sean, a former moderator of a Super Bomberman fanpage! Yes, Gun Bullet was better than Time Crisis and Police Trainer because simply, the design resonates more with the gamer. There was a very fun playful carnival look to the game that can’t help but make the gamer smile plus an impressive collection of different, versatile shooting challenges from dry tasks like shooting clay discs to the more common levels where one shoots cuckoo birds, octopus, skeletons and an apple off the head of the game’s mascot.
Four difficulty settings gave the game a fantastically seamless learning curve for new gamers. However, this was certainly no ‘casual game’ as once you moved onto a higher difficulty level it would be common to see big crowds of gamers watch as you attempt to shoot a car 120 times in 10 seconds or catch the tiny falling leaf with one bullet.
Gun Bullet/Point Blank’s soundtrack added to the fun shooting gallery theme of the game with some really funky and humorous tracks… some of which I think were well ahead of their time as far as video game music goes. A myriad of hyperactive electronic drum solos, synths, samples, horns and rock guitars with a slight touch of jazz fusion, new jack swing and plain old VGM makes for a unique sound that immediately brings up the image of those blue and pink pistols and the several hours spent at the arcade.
The game’s theme (http://www.uploadmusic.org/MUSIC/1280321274802506.mp3) (Direct .mp3 link) displays all these influences… a remarkable track if held up against other arcade titles of 1994 like the stock police music of Crime Patrol (http://www.mobygames.com/game/crime-patrol) and the mod soundtracks to PC games like One Must Fall 2097 (http://www.mobygames.com/game/one-must-fall-2097) that, while very good, seem so primitive to Point Blank’s complexity. There was three composers after all.
I think another important track for the game is Theme of Glass Beyond Detective (http://www.uploadmusic.org/MUSIC/1307201274803038.mp3). (Direct .mp3 link) Just listen to this thing! It’s almost a parody of rock music – a mix of metal and VGM music to conjour up images of the badassery that would ensue in the ‘crime’ levels of Point Blank where the gamer had to knock off a cardboard cutout of criminals without hitting the hostages. It’s much harder than anything on the DOOM soundtrack which is from around the same time.
And finally my favourite track, Palace of Pleasure Part. 7 (http://www.uploadmusic.org/MUSIC/8624711274803774.mp3) (Direct .mp3 link) . It starts off on this really funky level like a typical early 90s dance song and then cuts abruptly, playing these weird clanking sounds and vocoder yells… Is it speedbass?
This is a crazy soundtrack, but it’s really great. I don’t even like it on an ironic level such as the Neverhood soundtrack – Point Blank rocks out hard. Namco released a soundtrack for the game under its Japanese title, Gun Bullet, and it is available for download online but on another online forum…
I don’t want to give Rapidshare links for the OST but one may be located in the vicinity of this website (http://tinyurl.com/23bj5vy).
Gun Bullet/Point Blank is a great game and it’s a survivor being recently released on the DS. I’m not sure how that works though – a stylus in the form of a miniature gun peripheral would be awesome – but this is one of Namco’s best titles and I hope it lasts as long as Pacman.
EDIT: Also, "Theme of Glass Beyond Detective" sounded really familiar to me. Does that melody remind anyone else of anything?
EDIT: I think it reminds me of something from the Street Fighter soundtracks. Just the melody, right after the guitar tremolo stops. Am I going crazy?
Or you can type it out like so:
[ U R L = h t t p : / / b l a h . c o m ] the linked text [ / U R L ]
without the spaces of course.
Is that what you mean?
Heroes of Might and Magic 3: The Restoration of Erathia
Here’s an oldie but goodie from Paul Romero. I really can’t think of much to say about it, other than every song in the game seems to fit the situation perfectly, especially when it comes to the town themes. My personal favorites are the themes for Necropolis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXGBh_3J25g), which has a very sinister sound, especially towards the end, Fortress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsYjN4wFw4o), which is just pretty damn awesome after the 1:00 mark, and Rampart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFs5nYHejDU), which is actually quite serene.
Now I have an urge to go dig out my disk and play this game again…
I started searching around and found out this, too…
Romero [the composer] will be featured in a new Sundance Channel Documentary film, "The Gift", a feature-length documentary about classical musicians who were former child prodigies.
A game for the NES that only had a few BGMs but they were catchy nonetheless. In this game, you would control an Ice Climber (Player 1 controlling Popo and Player 2 controlling Nana) as you would make your way up the mountain and grab the condor flying at the top as you avoided Topis, Nitpickers, Polar bears, Icicles and falling to your doom.
The two Ice Climbers would later on appear as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl as well as arrangements of the tunes heard from their game.
Jewel Master
by Motoaki Takenouchi
This is one of my favorite game soundtracks, and it is Takenouchi’s first.
Here is a youtube playlist with the whole thing:
Favorite tracks (roughly in order of preference):
Jewel Master
Intergalactic Strut
Fish out of Water
To Be Over
Talk to the Wind
Alone in Love
Demon King
Close to the Edge
I would like to list all the tracks, but that would defeat the purpose of listing favorites 😀
This was Takenouchi’s first full published game soundtrack, as I mentioned earlier, and the style he sets forth here is very prevalent in his later games. I can’t listen to Shining Force II, Shining Wisdom, Gungriffon, Landstalker, etc, without some part of it reminding me of his work on this soundtrack.
Now, that being said, a couple of these tracks are hard to listen to more than once or twice 😀 , but the whole album is very enjoyable. One thing that I love about Motoaki Takenouchi, is you actually get some theme development across tracks (which is rare it 8 and 16 bit music, it seems) There is a little four or five note motif that is sprinkled across this soundtrack, and it really helps to tie it together.
I FREAKING LOVE JEWEL MASTER
There, I think I got it out of my system. The same would happen with Shining Force II, by the way 😉 I hope you enjoy it if you haven’t heard it already.
Oh, I like it better than Double Moon too! About "Time to Kill" : In all fairness the track loops at 2:18 (with one extra note held over from the previous section not present in the opening). It is very interesting to see a track in a video game that has contrasting, distinct A and B sections. I really enjoy the first loop or two, but then I always get bored 😀 . In fact, the version I have only goes to 5:00 flat. I’m very glad you enjoyed it!
I really liked it, too! You know, Jewel Master isn’t on the list of soundtracks for the imminent Genesis rumble, which we’re doing a final check on right now in the VGM Rumble thread…
Looks like I should check it out…I’ve abandoned that thread a bit in the last while, but a genesis rumble is my forte 😀 .
I really hope this gets on the Genesis rumble however. It’s one of the best I’ve heard from the Genesis.
Someone post a "K" because I want the "L". Just saying.
Interestingly enough I picked this up even though I detest console shooters and I must admit I really enjoyed it. And since I’m mentioning it here I really enjoyed its soundtrack as well. It was a very unique style and it is the first game in a while whose soundtrack I could easily mistake with that of a movie’s. Now that can be both good and bad, depending on how you look at it, but regardless it is an absolutely excellent soundtrack in every way. This became clear to me since the very beginning. What’s the beginning? The main menu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC0kxEgsIE4&feature=PlayList&p=7817A95C5B6DB151&playnext_from=PL&index=0&playnext=1) of course. I knew this would be an interesting soundtrack since the very beginning. And there we many other tracks that really stood out to me even in the heat of battle, and speaking from experience that is a very hard thing to accomplish in a shooter. Notable tracks include Invasion of the Helghan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rskf31loiI&feature=PlayList&p=7817A95C5B6DB151&playnext_from=PL&playnext=2), Autarch’s Sanctum Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72pGjFJoTuA&feature=PlayList&p=A7BE6A7D6FD93319&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=3) and Birth of War Retribution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41X5qHLTIuY&feature=PlayList&p=A7BE6A7D6FD93319&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1).
These are only a few, but I think they represent the style of the game’s soundtrack and the whole "like a move soundtrack" thing. If you are interested the link to the playlist is right here (http://www.youtube.com/user/xRussianYulia17x#p/c/A7BE6A7D6FD93319)
That’s it for the "K". Now moving on the "L" which is what I really wanted to show in the first place. Two entries this time (both from Nobuo Uematsu btw) and we start with:
You might have heard of this game of this game before. I admit I know nothing regarding the storyline or gameplay or basically anything that I would only know if I had played it. And I haven’t played it. But what I have done is listen to the soundtrack and it gorgeous. It is incredibly atmospheric, nicely varied, uses many different instruments and includes a decent ammount of tracks. A total of about 50 which is great. I can’t say I really have a favorite but there are plenty of tracks that really stand out such as Battlefield (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhpwyVkje9Q), Fire Above the Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM-CZvEdKu4&feature=related)(which I think is the main battle theme but honestly I’m not sure), An Enemy Apprears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAFmefU6DKM&feature=related), Epsylon Range (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28lntoikGwo&feature=related), A Mighty Enemy Appears! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3tr3NmURLQ&feature=related), Parting Forever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFGrxKDrluI&feature=related)(because what Nobuo Uematsu OST is complete without a vocal piece. But unlike Suteki da Ne and Eyes on Me, this doesn’t suck!). Very special mentions to the semi-final and final boss battle themes (at least I think that’s what they are) which are Dark Saint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv6_bDfnHGc&feature=related) and Roar of the Departed Souls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbeGTgt0RWQ&feature=related) respectively.
Special mentions deserve Theme of Seth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scsODgElS9U&feature=related), What you Are (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW2_jd2KRUk&feature=related), A Return Indeed… (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu3bbpZmMA4&feature=related) and Eclipse of Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT6QVsWKQ5g&feature=related)
Should you want to check out the rest of the soundtrack (and you SHOULD!), the link to the playlist is right here (http://www.youtube.com/user/djnardu#p/c/85900B2B86E19EC4).
Moving on to a game I’ll bet not one of you has even heard of:
What the f*** is this, you ask? Well there isn’t much info about this game to be honest. What I DO know however is that this is a fighting game with RPG elements, made by Square Enix and released only in Japan for the arcade and PlayStation 3. I’m not entirely sure how exactly I found out about this game and I don’t think it matters at this point. What does matter is that the composer of this marvelous soundtrack is none other than Nobuo Uematsu! That’s right! I don’t know whether the game is a hidden gem or a petrified asshole, but the soundtrack most certainly isn’t the latter! So if you don’t mind I’ll be bringing it to the light!
I don’t know where any of these are played but hey they’re awesome and you should hear them all:
Dawn of Vermillion~Opening Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mWKWm-cgiw)(It’s pretty obvious where this is played lol)

Rock out, huh?! I’d say his work with the Black Mages inspired this soundtrack. Man I finally got this off my chest. I’ve been itching to post Lord of Vermillion for months now 🙁 But anyway the deed is done now. Tell me what you guys think! 😀
I’m also a big fan of Lord of Vermilion. I was just listening to Meranji Sand Dune about an hour ago. Just about all of it kicks ass. Definitely an extension of his Black Mages work.
I know a little about Lord of Vermilion’s gameplay from watching videos of people trying it out. From what I remember there are two screens–one facing you and one set up like a tabletop. During battle, you place cards down on the tabletop and that somehow correlates to magic spells or special moves your character does, and you can chain them together in different ways. It’s a little strange, but looks fun.
I also haven’t played Lost Odyssey, although I started to watch a Let’s Play of it awhile back. I had to stop during these very long journal entry parts where he’s remembering stuff from the past. But I’ll probably go back to it at some point.
Thanks again!
I hate Let’s Plays! What if you actually get your hands on the game in the future? After having watched a Let’s Play the experience is as good as ruined and totally pointless! I oppose them, because I see what they represent. A dead end!
And apparently there’s a sequel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLqhg3NXPJ8) with the same card thing.
For M:
Master of Monsters
Hayato Matsuo(main composer), Hitoshi Sakimoto (Sound Programming), Koichi Sugiyama (oversee, Mentor of Matsuo)
Master of Monsters is one of my favorite game soundtracks. While short, this score is PACKED with wonderful melodies, counterpoint, development of themes, emotionally intense melodic and harmonic progression, and is just beautiful as well as pretty darn catchy! My favorite tracks are…everything!!! No, I’m joking (a little)–My favorites would have to be the lovely playful "Purple Time" (menu theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC2sPXF-mcM&feature=related) waltz, Golden Warrior (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9oippiC9tM&feature=related), Black Dignity(Title) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDmIiHKictU&feature=related) and Yellow Robe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h_Sp03xsEo&feature=related) (this version is slower than the NTSC version, and seems to make the echo effect sound bad). However, I absolutely love the middle section of We Will Conquer the Crimson Valley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut1HWoElTz4&feature=related), and the heartbreaking melodies of Large Green Meadow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dX7iroL8hc), Standing in the White Fortress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkskpN2cl-s&feature=related), and Into the Deep Blue Sky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFSF6RhFJak&feature=related).
The game is very very difficult, and many of the tracks reflect a feeling of desperation (We Will Conquer the Crimson Valley) or despair (Large Green Meadow) at being overwhelmed by enemy forces. This game definitely has some controller-toss-worthy moments, but I find it to a VERY enjoyable strategy RPG with ABSOLUTELY NO STORY (and I never thought it hurt the game one bit). Sure, there might be a hint of a vague story in the manual, but who reads that?? 😉
This game is interesting in that during each player’s turn a different track plays for their entire turn which sometimes lasts a full 2-3 minutes if you have a lot to do, and you probably will as there is a (sometimes very restrictive) limited number of turns. With one track looping at 2:37 and two other tracks just over two minutes, I would always find myself just letting the music play on my turn for a while if i’m not playing with a friend (which you can always do if you want to). Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that these tracks make great "thinking music".
I just can’t say enough about this soundtrack, but I know I’m not a terrific writer so I’ll stop there 😀 .
There is also a surprisingly detailed review of the soundtrack here:
http://www.squareenixmusic.com/reviews/chris/masterofmonsters.shtml
I also agree with the reviewer that the arranged version has a couple decent tracks, but is mostly bad…
Also, I went back and checked the list in the OP (http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1338318&postcount=1) and Domingo did Lost Odyssey already. So now we have two excellent recommendations for it with links. Thanks to both of you!
Final Boss Clear (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bevamTx0qU8)
Star Power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNGBAwKCfgM)
LOL
It seems to be…
Here’s the link to the official website’s soundtrack page: http://www.hemispheregames.com/2010/03/01/osmos-soundtrack/
If you just want to sample one song, I highly recommend this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u9zPYEE-eA&fmt=22
Portal is fantastic in every possible way. Much like the Half-Life series, Portal uses a lot of ambient tracks, which is a very good idea considering it’s nature (being a puzzle game and all). My favorie of the ambient tracks would probably have to be Self Esteem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ibpppFJr0I&playnext_from=TL&videos=CkI4yvw1qFg). There are a lot of other interesting tracks that play only in certain situations, like 4000 Degrees Kelvin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33jk7MXZJeU&feature=related) (which plays when GLaDOS is ready to burn you alive) or the Subject Name Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlN-ux1JzG0&feature=related) (which if I recall correctly plays during the harder test chambers near the end). The final boss fight theme (if one would call it that) is incredible as well. You Can’t Escape you Know (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RThhEK2srk&feature=related)!
But of course the highlight of the entire thing has got to be the end credits song, Still Alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iTmJy1u1B4&feature=related). A song with quirky lyrics which perfectly summarizes GLaDOS’s personality and her perception of human emotions. It’s brilliant
On a side note, I feel bad for N not getting a decent soundtrack so I’m gonna post one of those too if you don’t mind. My N goes to:
http://www.wiitalia.it/cover.php?src=http://www.wiitalia.it/immagini/cover/wii/no-more-heroes-big.jpg
I really don’t like the Wii. So when games like this come along it makes me feel left out. Killer 7 was out on both PS2 and Gamcube. Why the developers felt this had to be on the Wii only is beyond me. But that’s a story for another time.
The soundtrack is intuitive once again. I haven’t played the game obviously but I did enjoy the soundtrack. Here are some sample tracks.
Pleather for Breakfast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSfbb3WHClE)
We Are Finally Cowboys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkCGrgTYDIk)
Rocket Surgeon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOZ-NYnWzHU&feature=related)
Hustlin’ ‘n Tusslin’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCuEwon1T1A&feature=related)
Oxygen Graffiti
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN5HG0Ww0A4&feature=related)
Oh and the Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e73EDBGrHQg&feature=related) is cool.
Resistance: Fall of Man
by David Bergeaud
Some of you may know David Bergeaud’s work on Ratchet and Clank, for which he has composed the soundtracks of every game in the series, excluding the newest game, ‘A Crack in Time’. So why didn’t I choose one of the Ratchet games? Because this soundtrack feels slightly more epic in my opinion. Now, I haven’t played the game (won’t be buying a PS3 for a few years at least), so I can’t tell you how it feels in game, but just listening to it is awesome.
The music itself has exactly the same presence to it as Bergeaud’s Ratchet scores, but there isn’t as much (or any, at times) of the electronic effects and feeling, instead putting more emphasis on the orchestral aspects; including some awesome brass, and solid percussion backing.
Hopefully I’ve done it some justice.
Some select tracks:
Menu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtqUzexkYdk)
Chimeran Gun Trap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3wqUZ1yQt8)
Chimeran Reactor Core (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L54n8Nltlg)
Viper’s Nest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb29Ss5ot2s)
Fuel Station (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qyekXy6QcM)
I wouldn’t say its by far, but I agree that his Ratchet and Clank work is better. This one holds a place in my heart since I’d been listening to Ratchet music for ages before I discovered he’d done this soundtrack; and the different approach was new and interesting. That and I figured any Bergeaud soundtrack would be a win.
Or I could just say we might be tackling Ratchet soundtracks in a (near?) future PS2 rumble. Whereas a PS3 one would be an even longer time coming, and people mightn’t hear of it before then 😉
Now I’ll go home and determine which Ratchet game to pick next time we get to R if you don’t beat me to it 😀
Seriously though, if nobody steps up in the next few days I might have one in mind if I can find some youtube videos for it. And if I can get away with double posting 😉
Haha, yeah I kind of forgot about what I said. I’ll hunt down some videos in case Smarty doesn’t post Starcraft (or anybody else posts anything else) in the next few days; but it won’t be for Secret Agent Clank 😉
Haven’t had a chance to look into any Starcraft music yet since my backlist of soundtracks to download is probably about 100+ but I might bump it up the list a bit.
Here’s one of them from the game and it’s the most popular song of all:
Star Catch Fanfare (Plays when Mario gets a Power Star) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbIuDxqnSdw)
So yeah, my search for the full Starcraft 2 soundtrack has been fruitless so far. So I decided to not even bother and post an ever better soundtrack.
Yes, it’s the original StarCraft the game that to this day sits at the top of my top 5 best games ever list. I stil regard its soundtrack to be one of the best gaming has ever seen so I’m going to post it here now.
A few things about the game. First of all it’s RTS. Three races to choose from. Terrans (humans), Protoss (freaky aliens) and Zerg (even freakier aliens). What I like about the soundtrack is how well it fits each race. The story in the original follows a group of rebels, and the Terran theme are appropriately upbeat. The Protoss take themselves more seriously and seem more religious, desperately clinging to their dying traditions for no better reason than because they’re worked pretty well until now. Although I like to believe it’s because of their giant laser cannons and aircraft carriers. And the Zerg are just monsters. They have no free will and are fully-aware that their creators, commanders (sort of) and enemies consider them nothing more than punching bags or. Yet every single one of these elements is beautifully captured in every single theme, making it both unique and appropriate. There aren’t many tracks overall, each race only has 4 tracks (6 if you count the victory and defeat themes) and the rest consist of the music in the cutscenes. They’re not cleverly named, which I find a bit disappointing. But I like to think of it as good thing. Starcraft 2 had way more tracks but I hardly remember any of them. They’re not bad, but they’re so many and only the Terran themes endeared themselves to me. I don’t think I have anything more to say, but I’ll gladly answer any questions. And here are most of the tracks from the actual game:
Terran 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAKJ4XKSKFw)
Terran 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxcs5wJ4DEU&feature=related)
Terran 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD_4V8mPv8w&feature=related)
Protoss 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yCsD6ABzzE&feature=related)
Protoss 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yCsD6ABzzE&feature=related)
Protoss 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riy4mwtgfSU&feature=related)
Zerg 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw-8SFRRtoc&feature=related)
Zerg 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtpdM2VogWI&feature=related)
Zerg 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgTLffz_Wb4&feature=related)
Dearest Helena
The Ascension (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4eRc1qXXUE)
Brood War – Aria (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INqITDyU9_U&feature=related)
There are some more from the cinematics but I can’t seem to find them separately. I can link to the cutscenes if you want.
So that’s my take on StarCraft. What do you think?
x2
Terran tracks are the best tracks ever on the RTS genre.
Indeed they are. I can’t get enough of this shit. Klepacki himself would be proud.
I don’t think I’m going to bother talking about the tracks of the other races unless they decide to change them. First of all the Protoss themes. While they’re not exactly terrible, they lack the grace and elegance and subtlety of their predecessors. For the most part they just sound like choirs shouting random notes. Also they had the decency to use parts of the old Protoss tracks from SC1, which isn’t a bad thing, but since they’re mixed with the new themes, they sound completely out of place.
And then there are the Zerg themes. Now these are just plain terrible. I prefer to call them "noise" instead of "music". And just like Kerrigan, the Zerg have all lost any personality they ever had and the music seems to agree. They’re just sound effects and nothing more, and pretty terrible sound effects at that. The Zerg don’t seem into it anymore, so why should I?
I Like Protoss songs
I despise Zerg songs
That’s about my opinion on the soundtrack of the Original Starcraft.
Too bad that they didn’t make an effort to make them better, also, too bad about the Protoss tracks too, the Original songs of the protoss were pretty good, mystical & cosmic atmosphere full of nature.
Yeah, I’m officially ignoring you now. If you’re gonna post a soundtrack that everyone and their grandma knows about, at least have the decency to post more than 1 track.
Quoted for truth, but also because it gave me a laugh and helped me decide on what the next soundtrack I posted would be. Anyway, there are probably better ???T??? games out there, but this is a nostalgia trip for me.
TEDDY BOY for the Sega Master System
Why you ask? Because it was one of the games my grandfather played almost to death. I guess I inherited it from him, because I played this a lot in my childhood too (Although not as much as my next ???A??? game if I get it in time).
Despite how much I like this soundtrack, it sits in a similar league to Duck Hunt for length; without looping, the entire soundtrack would probably last just over 1 minute. The game only features one track that plays during all 50 stages (although if you can get to even 15-20 without using an emulator you???re some kind of god) but thankfully never seemed to irritate. It???s a kind of standard Sega affair, but it’s catchy, upbeat and suits with the quick play of the game. While the game only features 6 tracks, it???s a quick listen that I still play on a semi-regular basis.
This gameplay video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTnZSRPi10I) should convey the way the music fits the game in my opinion. (And also maybe how intense the game can get). It goes for 5 minutes, but it’s a pretty straightforward game, so you probably don’t even need to watch it all the way through 😛
Alternatively, here’s a gamerip (http://www.mediafire.com/?v6xxrl3p7hfvovi) I did ages back with only one SFX at the start of the stage theme loop. It???s only 3 MB so it won???t take long to download at least.
Hopefully people find it a quick, enjoyable soundtrack like I do.
Speaking of Sega, I don’t know any Master System soundtracks (or games for that matter). It seems that Nintendo games and consoles are the ones that went down in history to be remembered and adored. I was pushing for a Genesis rumble for this very reason. Hopefully we can do a Master System and perhaps Saturn rumble as well. After the PS1 and PS2 ones that is.

Sounds like Pokemon….. *listens again* Could be because I’ve known this for years prior to Pokemon, but I can’t hear it :-\
The only reason I know Master System games is because it was the only system I had before my N64 – which is why I enjoy the NES/SNES/Gen rumbles to find non-Mario/FF/Zelda/etc game soundtracks.
Well I guess we should add a SMS rumble to growing list now; would be the first system rumble where I’m familiar with a decent amount of soundtracks (at least till we get to the PS1 and PS2 rumbles). Damn, I had work to do today and now I’m going to want to search for SMS soundtracks…… :notgood:
Actually, listening to it again, it doesn’t really remind me of that last video. …. Whatever!
It reminds me of the original gameboy sounds more than pokemon itself
This however I heard immediately
Good game, great soundtrack. Tries too hard to be movie, still enjoyable nonetheless. Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar4KM4FXBEQ&feature=related), Nate’s Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkPF5UiDi4g&feature=related), Marco Polo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5e_QvyK6GU&feature=related), Among Thieves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0cfZROUrOc&feature=related), Breaking and Entering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4gL62XMVhk&feature=related), Warzone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wXoWT4oHDI&feature=related), Cornered (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlPuxPItpmo&feature=related)
The rest of the soundtrack is most definitely worth checking out. I can’t really say any more about the games, since it’s been a while since I played it and I don’t really remember anything. Hope to see you guys post more stuff.
And here’s a great version of the title music:
Valkyria Chronicles… I could make the post if you wish… Although I don’t think it ranks among the best stuff of Sakimoto.
Yeah, somebody should do Valkyria Chronicles. I’ve only heard it once, so I’ll defer to someone who’s more familiar with it.
Okay, tomorrow I’ll be working on it.
Okay, we are in front from a title of the PS3, a game that was developed by SEGA, it spawned a sequel for the PSP & turns to be a success because of it’s particular focus on the battle system.
It Combines the Turn-Based RPG with some Real-Time Mechanics. You should check it by yourself if you like the genre…
But Let’s talk about it’s music, We are here to talk about music After all huh!?!
HELL YEAH!!!
This soundtrack Composed By Hitoshi Sakimoto, he decided to take this game by composing solo instead of getting help by his partners at Basiscape.
With a 2 Vocal Tracks, one composed by Daisuke Kawaguchi & the other one by Sakimoto of course…
In General this soundtrack it’s pretty good on it’s own, it’s our regular Militaristic-Romantic Style that’s trademark of our Composer’s style.
The paricularity of this soundtrack much it’s tracks remind us of something to us Sakimoto’s Followers, I Listened to almost all of his soundtracks released to this date.
You can perceive that in the Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP9rJdxmuQU), the basic Melody is has Militaristic March as the base… But the melody itself it’s reminded me of something… It made me feel the "I listened to this before…" & Indeed I had, The melody of the Main Theme sounds just too close to the melody of "Closed Le??? Monde" of "Vagrant Story" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-zu_uDM4Rg)(I wish to revisit this later, If you @Arthur give me the green light of course)…
Now this is something that some may found it great & I found it not FATAL but most certainly not good, it tells us a lot of things… It can be that it was intentional or it can tell us that we found ourselves in a creative corner without new Ideas…
It may sound harsh, but the gravity of this aspect it can be perceived mainly because IT’S THE MAIN THEME.
This means that the melody is scattered on almost all of the soundtrack & it’s always reminding me about the 1st minute of "Closed Le??? Monde".
But enough crtizicing…
The good aspects of this soundtrack it’s mainly because it’s highly enjoyable, there are a good amount of fun tracks to listen to, the soundtrack transits to a lot of variant moods & Storytelling isn’t the main aspect of the game, this made the soundtrack had compositions that didn’t rely much on inserting climax at scenes like we listened before in FFXII, hence more sticky sounds to our brains, most of the regular gamers criticize this composer because of he almost never compose something sticky, so here ya have your sticky music you regular listener punks >.<!
The set of Instruments used it’s the regular orchestration that Sakimoto always uses, but with some certain interesting features…
Some Tracks Include Harpsichord, Church Organs & Apocalyptic Choirs , a rare thing on Sakimoto, what’s next Sakimoto on Castlevania!? Now that would be most certainly weird! But Hey! he actually worked on Gradius V so It can’t be that far of a posibility. XD
This soundtrack provides a lot the sense of drama & Apocalyptic atmospheres, Playful music & a lot of European Nurtured sounds, with romantically filled pianos & orchestrated screens in a metaphorical way of describing it.
A lot of Anime styled music is filled in, no wonder since the franchise spawned one & the artistic direction speaks for itself.
Entering in the terrain of the Vocal Tracks…
"No Matter the Distance" Composed by Daisuke Kawaguchi, has the particularity of having the sound similar to most of the Endings of the Anime in the late 90’s & in the beginning of the new Century. It reminded me a lot to "Friends" from "Soul Hunter" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzWn1Y794Uk).
The track itself it’s actually pretty good if you like the style, the instrumentation & the bass lines are pretty well elaborated.
The Vocal Line is really catchy also, mainly because the melody it’s actually pretty simple…
There are 2 versions of this track 1 for the Opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftBNbb5MlJ4) & other one for the Ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH_O9utWj7g) but it’s of course a more complete version in length. (This is getting more & more similar to Anime music the more I’m talking about it isn’t it?)
Then we have "Succeeded Wish" Composed by Sakimoto, this is a Classical Track, 3 versions of them, 1 Vocal, 1 Orchestrated & 1 Piano Only.
The Vocal version Performed by Megumi Toyoguchi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_Bgoaf_xYk), it’s actually really not that good, it has an awesome classical style, very very academic reminicent of composers of Eons away from us, but the Melody isn’t very Vocal at the beginning if you know what I mean… But it picks up really good by the second half of the track. The notes are very sustained & with lack of attack, but it regains power at the second-half as I said before. That’s the Issue…
Although that doesn’t mean that Sakimoto isn’t good at composing Vocal Tracks, you should really check his composition for Stella Deus Vocal Track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB5b2NZmBO8)…
The Orchestrated one, the longest one & with a little name modification, it’s called "Those Who Succeded" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1zxij1pLpM), it’s a fine piece of work as I described the Characteristics of the composition, it’s very reminicent of the Romantic & Classical Period of Academic Music.
Then the Piano Solo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd29_0bjEcY), there isn’t much to say about this one, only that it’s CRAZY AWESOME! xD
Here are the List of Tracks that I reccomend for you to listen:

But I encourage you to listen to this wonderful soundtrack, there’s a lot of good music in there, worth to enjoy.

And here’s a great version of the title music:

What’s the pick for "X"?
First order of business: I???m retiring X. Someone can take it next time around if they want, but otherwise we’ll be moving right along. That means Q and X are both gone now.
Second, I???m taking Y. And it???ll be???
Ys 7
By Falcom Sound Team JDK
I originally wrote about Ys 7 on the VGM Trivia page (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f63/video-game-music-trivia-66197/3.html#post1476657) because several of the tracks sounded like other famous video game compositions. Despite that, I???ve since come to appreciate the music as most people appreciate Yoko Kanno???s work???splendid and technically sound, even if it???s stolen.
While the influences are transparent, the music is varied and fun. It???s hard to represent the full soundtrack here even with 15 tracks. Well worth checking out if you???re a fan of Final Fantasy, Suikoden, or Secret of Mana???s music. Some examples:

Zwei!!
By Falcom Sound Team JDK
Zwei!! is a 2002 Falcom action/RPG for the PC that was later ported to the PlayStation 2 and PSP. The reason for the title (the German word for “two”) is that you have to control two characters, one strong in magic and the other strong with physical attacks, that you flip between during the game. It’s hard to find professional reviews of it, but user reviews rank the game very highly: 9s and 10s. Perhaps the game simply didn’t get a lot of press. :-\
Fans of Yasunori Mitsuda, Final Fantasy VIII’s music, and the Suikoden series will hear a lot of similarities in the soundtrack. The guitar arrangement of the main theme seems directly inspired by Mitsuda’s Celtic tendencies, Toripoca Lake could just as easily have been the theme for Fisherman’s Horizon, and many of the location themes have a gondola/shamisen/flute arrangement ala Higashino’s signature work. Overall, the music is tense and melodic, with a lot of drawn-out strings to suggest a wide-open and mysterious world. All of the expected jRPG hallmarks are here, too, with some clever surprises in the arrangements and percussion.
Edit: For some reason, the only tracks on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=E48AE46F86988CDA) are really lame, overwrought versions of the songs (example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBpasAnve80&p=E48AE46F86988CDA)). I hate resorting to a download link, but you can find the soundtrack here (Thread 39734) on GoronMoron’s page.
Alternately, here are some links to the correct versions of the songs within play-throughs of the game. The downside is that there will be sound effects, but the upside is that you’ll get to see some of the gameplay.
1. Cropp Cave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbGmP712nFk)
2. Kenopi Volcano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS3rEhFJ_r4)
3. Road to Where the Dragon Sleeps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO3xlEFKQU8)
4. Pavel Garden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b8SLTlx8lQ)
5. Kapaya Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0qNJG6pKCA)
If you download the soundtrack, I also recommend checking out:

4. Dapne Desert
5. Toripoca Lake

Hope you enjoy. 😀
Now who’s gonna take "A"?
I think this is the best franchise of this generation and everyone should at least check out the first 2 games (Brotherhood wasn’t exactly a step in the right direction, it wasn’t a step in any direction really) should they ever get a chance. It’s intelligent, it’s engaging and it’s quite different than what you’d normally find yourself playing.
The soundtrack of the entire series up to this point has been helmed by the great Jesper Kyd. Now, I can confidently say that he’s one of my favorite composers, because he, and some other people, simply get it. He’s a talented musician who can always adapt depending on the project he’s assigned and the results are magnificent. The kind of musical diversity found in just this series, is quite a feat. So, without further ado let’s start with first game.
The game is set during the crusades in the 12th century, in an alternate universe where all the major cities of the Holy Lands are a 5 minute horse ride from one another (I kid, I kid). The overall tone of the game is extremely dark and since the main character is a master assassin you’ll be spending the majority of the game by yourself, scaling building, finding ways to approach your target without getting detected and stuff like that. The soundtrack overall is built around the premise of the game and changes a lot depending on the action.
The first time (personally speaking) that any music actually standed out as more than really atmospheric background sounds was during my first venture to Damascus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzHRmlCbdFs), where your first target is located. This theme will slowly kick in while you’re on a high cliff overlooking the city and will continue all the way till you reach down. It was quite the sight. The music heard during combat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rB2K3gxz7c&feature=related) is also fitting as is the pursuit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PlIyIr-dnE&feature=related) theme.
The other two cities, Acre and Jerusalem, have both gotten equal treatment. Jerusalem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qX_WOD4EaI) is arguably the best music in the game and just like before is played when you get to the outskirts of the city. It’s also the only place that’s even close to being cheerful as outlined by the more diverse color palette and the more upbeat and "happy" (I guess?) music (at least compared to everything else) such as this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p9EdYNVYc4).
Acre is on the other end of the spectrum though. It’s so depressing I dread to think about it. The first target you have to assassinate there is quite memorable for me due to one particular scene where he breaks a man’s legs just to prove a point. I’ll avoid saying anything more, you’re gonna want to see that particular scene for yourself. The main theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBKZ_nIGIws&feature=related) itself reflects the competely bleak situation of the city as do the other related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlYds2S0RT0&feature=related) themes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjZ37RPkXVY&feature=related).
Suprisingly, all of the major targets got their own themes as well. Here are some listed. Sibrand (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaH7DOU_gis), Robert De Sable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1mBvmO9MoE&feature=related), Tamir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t15fUr2kc2o&feature=related), Abul Nuqoud (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNPFvWtD1VY&feature=related) among others.
Overall, the music is spectacular. Kyd managed to make an incredibly atmospheric soundtrack, that not only fit with the historic setting with the game, but also set an amazingly eerie mood and sent shivers down your spine. There are plenty of things I could touch on but won’t because it’s late, and I want to get to the sequel.
The setting has now moved from 12th century Middle East to 15th-16th century Italy, that’s right the Renaissance. The game’s tone is drastically changed from the first game, being for the most part light-hearted and humorous even.
Assassin’s Creed 2’s soundtrack is one of the most popular soundtrack in recent history as far as I can tell. The videos on youtube have several hundred thousand views and a few passing a million. This time around it’s not all atmospheric background music, though it’s not lacking in that category either.
I was hoping to elaborate some more but it is really late, I have studying to do tomorrow, it’s FUCKING HOT (38 degrees Celsius nearly every day it’s a nightmare) and I just want to go to bed. I’ll leave with the best tracks. And try not to let the thread die this time.

Quick shout out to Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. In style, I’d say it’s largely unchanged from 2, unsurprisingly given the game is basically a direct sequel to 2. It wasn’t as good either of the first two, not as game nor as a soundtrack, but it was still pretty good. I think Kyd won some kind of award for City Of Rome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fyee46OFCkc), but I can’t remember right now. I’m pretty sure he won something.
Have a good night everyone.
Thanks for throwing Double Moon Densetsu our way! Do you know where I might find a proper list of track names, order, composer, developer and publisher company info? I seem to be missing all of those.
