there are some sound cards that can go beyond midi. which result in better quality than the psx.

The first time I ever played this game was through the PC version (I had an N64, and in 2000 when my parents were buying a new family computer, I specifically had them get one capable of playing FFVII and VIII). This brought back memories.

Generally speaking, the midi was vastly inferior to the PS1 version. That said, there were certain tracks that were quite a bit better. The best example I can give is a recommendation that you compare Birth of a God between the PC rip and the OST version. There’s a pretty noticeable jump in quality, as the PC one sounds less muffled and is slightly nicer instruments.

There was one HUGE problem with the PC version, however. I guess it was more of a sound card issue, but One Winged Angel did not play the vocals on most PCs. I’m assuming that they were there somewhere, but couldn’t be played for whatever reason.

MIDI is not a sound format. It’s nothing but a type of interface which sends patch and note data, the chorus/reverb parameters, how long each note should be held, etc. The PSX uses MIDI data as well for its SEQ/VAB music format (such as that seen in all of FFs, Xenogears, etc). The end result is based on the quality of the sound module through which the data is being run, and the quality of the patches used.

Sadly, lyrics were never included in One-Winged Angel on the PC version – Eidos chickened out when they ported the PC version and couldn’t be bothered recording the lyrics as a separate WAV file and then coding it to play over the MIDI instruments (they just stuck with MIDI instruments). So it doesn’t matter how good your sound card is – by default you’ll never hear the lyrics because they don’t physically exist.

There are music hacks you can use for the PC version to play either the PSF rip or mp3s of the OST however, but it’s very fiddly and is often too much trouble to bother with.

In your second links, if you listen some music, in the picture (down, right) there is an arrow that appears. And if you click, you can download all in .zip folder (111 928 ko).

I also played the PC version of FF7 before playing it on the PS and I always thought it sounded better on the PC. You could install Yamaha’s XG software synthesizer and choose between two different settings, one was XG-lite (which supposedly was lower quality) and something else (which I think is the setting used for the tracks that 140.48 uploaded). In my opinion, XG-lite was a lot better. Here are a few tracks that I recorded myself using XG-lite:

It was really hard to make these recordings since the XG software required is really old and only works on Windows 95 and 98, so I had to use a virtual machine and very patiently record the songs I wanted.

I’ve been listening to the original OST constantly lately. So far I feel that the original version is optimized/more complete. This one sounds sort of like a computer midi reproduction (which is basically is) from what I can tell.
