Virus warning on the forums

Where is this stupid Worid of Warcreft logo that’s making my Avast pop up with a warning saying that there’s some virus embedded in the logo?

This has never happened before (this is the first time I’m encountering this), and I’m at work currently, logging in to look at stuff. At least Avast is blocking that shit from infecting the work computer.

I am at home and it is doing this and it only started today it hasnt happened any other time

Regarding Avast, I found it to be a quite poor anti-virus which used loads of system resources… I highly recommend Avira, it’s free (you can upgrade if you wish) – doesn’t hardly use any load and is one of the only anti-virus programs which can trace ‘shape-shifting’ viruses (which Avast can’t).

I’ll put money on it that if you swapped and did a full scan, you WILL find viruses on your system which Avast missed. In the lastest test at http://www.av-comparatives.org/ Avira found 99.7% whilst Avast found 98.2% (18,575 less).

I find it highly disturbing to know those statistics, but I will continue to use Avast.

I used to use AntiVir for a while, but it missed a nasty virus that got onto my system which locked my desktop theme to Windows Classic (so everything looked like it was 1995) and buggered around with the Control Panel settings.

AntiVir didn’t find anything no matter how many times I ran it, so I bit the bullet, reinstalled AVG and within ten seconds it had pinpointed the nasty and zapped it back to wherever the hell it came from. A reinstall of Windows XP was required to fix the damage the virus had caused though.

I’ve never used anything else except AVG since. Sadly though, the latest version of AVG (8.5) is a resource hog where as older versions were always much faster. But, I guess that’s the price of progress (my machine is quite old though so that doesn’t help).

I got the same problem, i also use avast!, and the warning pops up on every page of the forum.

avast! does not really use much ressources, i don’t know where you get that information.

Firefox’s NoScript is blocking this shit.

What the fuck is going on? I bet it’s some jabroni hacker trying to bring this place down.

Very annoying to even come here, but I like these threads, the Avast thing…well for me its tolerable…

The reason for the vast resources that avast! requires is simple, it has more aspects such as P2P Shield as well as a dual shield against the net.

It offers more, and the minimum to run it is very little. AVG’s Non-Commercial/Home/Free software.

Avast offers more.

AVIRA…you know, I decided to try it out on my old Desktop. Only thing it found was viruses that avast did miss…only because those viruses are the experimental ones that are used to detect some.

Still avast gets the job done and Avira is dangerously close to claiming its 100%…

I’m afraid people that don’t have anti-virus protection will find their WoW or Gmail accounts hacked just because they visited this site.

I downloaded NoScript for Firefox like Steven 24 said and it fixed the problem.

Yeah, I was getting the same thing. And when that disappeared, I got another one saying the forums themselves were a problem.

Just get NoScript, it made the virus messages disappear.

Upon visiting this page, my browser is trying to load data from woridofwarcreft.com.

I’m not getting that annoying POP UP anymore which is a good thing as it was accompanied by a male computer voice saying something like THERE IS A VIRUS blah blah blah. OH MY GOD that was annoying.

Anyways I was still getting a pop up on the bottom of the screen but no BIG pop up and no voice as before. That just started part way through today.

And now … it seems to be gone completely (knock on wood) as even the little no voice pop up is now gone.

NEVERMIND … the warning is back … although again it is the smallish type of warning. I wonder if I did that by hitting some "option" in AVAST! or what (shrugs).

-You right click on the Avast! icon in your task tray
-Click "Program Settings"
-Go to the "sounds" menu
-Click on "Disable avast! sounds"
-Click "OK"

You still get the warning though unless you disable scripts or shut off avast

And Steven is right as well. Navigating the site becomes a real pain. Not to mention that the little buttons that should be above this message I’m now typing won’t work ><

Every few hours when I access the forums I get a warning saying:
"The following add-on was running when this problem occurred:"
and indicates Flash 10b.ocx.
Explorer then crashes. I’ll reload it and it will work fine. Then a few hours later, it crashes again. I tried accessing it through a different computer with a different ip and it also crashed.
I’m running norton and have had no complaints.
Only this forum is causing problems.
I have heard a news report, for which I have missed the details that says that Adobe Flash 10 has a major security problem allowing viruses and remote takeovers that they hope to have patched by September.
Please let me know if the administrators find out what is going on and what we should do next.

It was popping up with an AVAST warning but now, in the last few minutes,
it’s back to WORLD OF WARCREFT.

This is the direct link if some evidence is needed…its way too big, shrinking it only makes the text ineligible.

Microsoft Forefront Client Security tells me as soon as I come onto this site of "Exploit:JS/ShellCode.gen" and "TrojanDownloader:Win32/Swif.AB" that are on the "Severe" alert level. This seems to only appear once I get on the site, after I deal with flushing out the viruses nothing comes up.
EDIT: I dont get this on gh.ffshrine.org, just the forum. :S
I went here again later on after leaving the site and got the Swif.AB file but not the other one.

Mr. Muay Thai is right. If you’ve got Firefox, get NoScript, it blocks scripts from executing on any webpage, and you can optionally allow certain sites’ to execute the script. Worid of Warcreft.com is blocked.

Yes, I have also noticed that both here and from a remote location, that explorer is trying to access woridofwarcreft.com. Then it crashes.
Clearly, whatever it it’s, is something attached to ffshrine. Somebody with the right access and know how has to track down where on this site it is located. And whatever it is, it seems to be attached to every part of the site.
Everything else about blocks or anti-virus is just a patch. The real problem still must be addressed.

This place is starting to fuck with me. Everytime I try to go on I get an error message and have to close IE. A few times my virus protection warned me of a virus. WoW virus?! WTF!

I like noscript, it’s very secure, will stop the stupid DriveCleaner spyware that pops up on some sites, that plain messes the pc up heaps.

But as for this website AND forums, I have never got a virus notification at all. I have got CA Anti-Virus 2009

Firefox is a temporary solution, if you are an active user of this site and this virus is giving you hell use Firefox until the webmaster fixes this issue.

That’s understandable, but don’t forget IE doesn’t have the same security as firefox, disabling scripts does help for more safer browsing.

It does help but some many not have that option, as for me, its not, as the scripts it can use to block, it goes the extra mile and blocks stuff from the site I report to for work…

IE 8 has that feature, not 7, and not everyone is willing to up to the new one, as well some of us still run 6…

The problem is the site…and now for some reason, the WoW is back, but avast isn’t yelling anymore, its instead just showing the thing on the right side of the screen…

I am seeing "World of Warcraft" something loading at the bottom of the page sometimes, but I’m not getting any virus warnings.

I don’t mean to be impolite, but I must say this as plainly as possible:

There is something seriously wrong with this website.
This problem must be addressed.
I have yet to see anyone identified as a system administrator indicate that they are aware of the problem or are doing anything to fix it.
Until a system administrator addresses the problem it will not go away and will likely get worse.
For the health of this website, THIS PROBLEM MUST BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY.

I am requesting that whoever is administering this site let us know what the status of the inquiry is. If no administrator is available, would someone please let me know how they can be contacted.

This is not a user issue, this is a site issue.
What is being done to fix the site?

This could be a false reading has many High end virus protections can do, but, it does need to be addressed, and I would of thought an Admin would reply to this within the first post.

I have Avast and am getting this notification. Any ideas on what the problem is? It makes posting and searching quite difficult.

Do you have your scanners set up to scan by using ‘heuristic analysis’ by any chance? This is a function that is usually an optional setting where the virus scanner searches files for viruses not by whatever virus definition table the scanner currently has, but rather by looking for standard patterns of behaviour or lines of code that most viruses and trojans tend to exhibit.

This can be helpful in catching certain viruses that might be missed using conventional means, but because some normal or benign files actually have certain functions that are similar to some types of virus, heuristic analysis will often throw up ‘false positives’ thinking it’s malware.

Hence the function is often disabled as default by most virus scanners. Try searching your scanner’s optional settings and see if there’s a ‘use heuristics’ option checked on. If so, try unchecking it to see if that fixes the problem.

That’s what I figured as well, the only thing is now for avast! to stop detecting it. It does get rather annoying, I have NoScript installed, and am blocking this site, which stops the script, and thus avast! doesn’t detect it. But I do lose functionality in the site with it disabled.

About false positives…

There is clearly something here. The only valid reason for an address like woridofwarcreft.com is that somebody is trying to sneak something by us.

It doesn’t matter what the smoke detectors say, the building is clearly burning.

On other news, I left a single page open for almost 24 hours, and was able to use links within it. As usual, as soon as I navigated to anywhere else in the site, it crashed.

I never had any virus warning. Even when I had Norton (use AVG now and still no warning).

I can only speak for myself, and I’ve only logged onto the site a few times since it’s been back, (including from a seperate computer,) but so far it has been behaving normally. Barring any surprises, or reports to the contrary from other users, I’d say the problem has been solved.

Well, IDX, that’s because it was apparently a problem limited to only a couple different products.

I too have no messages from the anti-virus anymore. Im glad this issue was sorted.
