How To Convert "Single" FLAC/APE Albums to Individual Songs

Hi, I’m new to this forum and I would like to introduce myself by making a small contribution. I don’t have any albums to share, but I do have a small tutorial that may be of interest to some people here.

I realize I am blatantly posting this in the wrong area of the forum, but I only wish to do so to reach the biggest target audience. There are almost 200 people visiting this area of the forum and this just seems like the best place to post a tutorial. Admins, feel free to move this thread and please don’t hurt me! *cowers in fear*

I noticed that some of the albums were ripped as single file FLAC or APE files with a cue sheet included. I don’t prefer this method, and I wanted to fix this. With a little digging, I managed to figure out how to do it. I wish to share my newfound knowledge with the rest of this forum because I know some of you would much rather prefer individual FLAC or APE tracks instead of a single super track with a cue sheet. I don’t know if there’s an easier way to do this or if it’s already explained in this forum.

Also, and I don’t mean to offend users of this forum for the way some of you prefer to share albums. I have nothing but admiration for those who share here. With that said, here we go.

Have you looked into CUETools (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=66233)?

It only requires two steps compared to the seven you’ll need with Mediacoder and Cue Wav Extract to convert a range rip to individual tracks:

1. Edit the image cue sheet with a text editor prior to using it with CUE Tools to make sure that the filename of the image matches what’s in the cue sheet. There’s no need to decompress the image to wav as CUETools does this automatically.

2. Load the cue sheet in CUETools, select the preferred conversion options, and click Go. Done!

Thanks! There’s no way I would have discovered this program on my own. I tried doing google searches until finally I found Cue Wav Extract, but this Cue Tools is something I should check out. 🙂

No problem. I suggest using v2.0.2a, not the latest one, since it can store the converted files in a subfolder where the image file is stored. Also, instead of loading the cue sheet within the program, you can just right click on the cue sheet in Explorer and select the bolded "Open" or "Open With" and choose CUETools (if it’s not in the list, select Choose Program or Browse and locate where you’ve stored it.)

For an even easier method (one step), just use Medieval Cue Splitter (http://www.medieval.it/content/view/28/70/).

I’ve used Medieval CUE Splitter before, but now have switched to CUETools because of its cleaner look and its AccurateRip checker feature. You can also voice your rants, opinions, suggestions or questions directly in that forum thread and usually get an instant reply from the developer.

Foobar2000 is the best one.

I convert them to MP3 using Mediacoder and then separate them by hand using Audacity. It just feels better when you do it yourself, or so I think.

I’m one of those that prefer the Single WAV + CUE Sheet + Log file method, it works perfectly fine for playback when dragging the CUE sheet into foobar2000. Speaking of which, although you can use Exact Audio Copy to separate a single FLAC file into multiple FLAC file, with a few steps, I have to agree with OrangeC, foobar2000 is the easiest method that I’ve used.

If you have one of these single FLAC file with CUE sheet rips, you can simply drag & drop the CUE sheet into the foobar2k window and once all of the songs are loaded you can highlight them, left-click and go to "Convert". If it’s setup to convert to FLAC format, then just specify a folder, if it’s not automatically saved to a predetermined folder, and you’re done. 🙂

You can also convert into any other format from a disc image rip so long as you have the decoder installed on your computer.
