I just want opinions on which server and which class and race to play as?
I prefer melee classes (If they can heal, awesome) so was considering going Elvaan or Hume.
Any suggestions?
So really, if you’re not sure which server to play on, find one that you have friends on (as far as I know, most of FF Shrine play on Cerberus, so that might be a good choice for you (I play on Quetzalcoatl though).
As for race and Job combination, a good starting choice for the beginner would probably be a hume Red Mage, as you’ll be able to deal fairly decent damage while still be able to heal yourself or use enfeebling spells. It also helps you get a feel for combat without putting yourself in too much danger.
If you want to do really good damage though, then Warrior for any race would be a good choice instead (as Red Mages start to weaken somewhat in the melee stakes very quickly and become more magic based).
If you do take the Warrior path however, as soon as you can, junk the sword they start with and take up the axe (either a single handed axe or a 2 handed great axe), as they will deal more damage with an axe in their hands than any other weapon (as a level 75 Warrior I prefer the great axe myself, but that’s more personal preference ;)).
Tbh, the only other pay to play mmorpg I’ve played to great extent is WoW, so I’ll be pretty much embarking on this journey alone.
Also if I choose warrior, would I be better off as Galkan race? I hear they do heaps of melee damage.
The game is archaic like that, but the content and support are on par. Make friends asap because I don’t remember the game as very solo friendly. Good luck.

A) Who pays for a trial and…
2) You can change classes on the fly.
Ok so Ive been playing for an hour and realise just how old this game is. I mean I would expect this kind of gameplay and look from a free MMO.
It’s older than WoW and supports 3 separate platforms that all play together. The look isn’t very eye candy-ish but the gameplay is mainly party based. Solo isn’t suggested after level 20.
Yes and no. On paper, galka have the highest HP and defense, making them better at tanking. Their strength is still high, but elvaan actually have the highest strength in the game.
In practice however, even a taru Warrior can be turned into a damage dealing powerhouse with the right equipment (good stat boosting items like rings and belts help a lot). However, Warrior does become more suited to tanking than damage dealing later in the game though, as other, Advanced Jobs outperform it in terms of raw damage (such as Dark Knight and Samurai).
That’s not to say Warrior can’t be a force on the battlefield. It’s just you have to find what works best for you to accomplish that. 🙂
Yes, there are several really good DPS classes in FFXI, but WAR is just about the only one who’s mechanics don’t drastically change between the beginning and the end. It’s also highly likely you won’t be asked to tank post-40 over NIN/WAR. It’s not very solo friendly before 75 with 37NIN or 37DNC(then again, what class is besides RDM)but it’s a nice beginner’s class if you’re not yet considering diving deeper into the meat and potatoes of FFXI.
FFXI races really don’t matter. Even though a ton of melee players go Elvaan and might swear up and down their extra STR makes all the difference in the world, it doesn’t. The Merit system at 75 makes this even more insignificant as many races can enjoy permanent stat bonuses at 75 which will roll over to lvl 1 jobs they may decide to level at a later date. Gear counts for a lot in that game and you will out-DPS any class regardless of racial differences if you do your homework and always wear the best you can, when you can. Go for aesthetics, because FFXI is a very long grind and you really don’t want to end up at 75 with a toon that you start to think looks retarded in your hard-earned AF2.
Seriously though, as a level 75 WAR/MNK I can tank just fine, even without a NIN sub (Yes, I’m a rebel I know, subbing MNK at that level). In fact, I’ve been in multiple parties where someone makes a smug remark about my choice of sub job and armour (WAR/MNK with full Adaman set and 4th Division Toporok :)), then quickly watch the smirk disappear from their face and their jaws hit the ground as I tank most mobs well and still do fair damage.
Okay, I know that was a bit of inflating my e-peen but the point stands. WAR can tank very well (and so they should – originally they were the ONLY tank Job that was in the game in the first place – the stats for WAR AF reflect that), it’s just unfortunately overlooked by more ‘flashier’ job choices like PLD (and incidentally, NIN were never meant to tank – they were supposed to be DD/enfeeblers. Watch how quickly a NIN’s HP drops to critical once their shadows go down when tanking and you’ll see what I mean).
Plus, the MNK sub gives more HP than any other Job (essential for any tank). Boost is handy for a quick power up for attack, plus it’s helpful for hate generation. Dodge is also very handy for tanking, especially if your evasion is low (and it goes well with the WAR’s own Aggressor ability, helping to cancel out Aggressor’s evasion reduction). In fact, using Aggressor and Focus in a cycle, I have an effective permanent bonus to accuracy, no butt-ugly-O-Hat needed ;p Counter also works very well with great axe, makign up for g axe’s higher delay.
I know that with WAR/MNK I can’t tank certain high level mobs like HNMs/Sky gods, which, quite frankly, I have no interest in fighting. But for your general, run-of-the-mill monster in a standard setting WAR/MNK performs very well. But that’s just my own opinion. 🙂
EDIT: I apologize for my rather-long winded rant Neru, as I just re-read your post and found you were agreeing with me more or less. But, my points are relevant still anyway. 🙂
I do agree WAR/MNK is beast though. I did it as a Taru just fine and it’s funny how many people still don’t think it works as well as it does. Though admittedly, WAR was never a main of mine so I only took it to 37, but it was fun.
Ah well, if you ever do decide to give it another try, send me a PM and I’ll get a Gold World Pass for you if you’d like. At least then, it won’t be quite a lonely experience. 🙂
…If I were to play again I would probably get the Xbox360 version as my PC has a keylogger atm.
So much so, I now make a point of avoiding those sites where at all possible (and if I do have to use them, I view them with Firefox not IE). Luckily Square Enix has also increased account security (such as the software keyboard for password login and that gimmicky ‘Security Token’ gizmo they’re currently selling.) to try and deal with the problem.
FFXI is still going strong imo that is, as the second scheduled version update this year was just finished the other week (Level cap raised to 85, new Job Abilities etc) and the third and final version update for this year, in a month or two (which will raise the level cap to 99 as well as more new additions (weapons, armor, items etc)).
There’s still plenty to do storyline wise, as well as many endgame events etc. Leveling has been made far easier now than it used to be as well, so it’s easier for new players to get right into it.
Also Death’s Head: Yeah I’ve heard that there’s tonnes of content and stuff to do now. But is this still a game where solo = bad / with bros = win?
If so then I’m better off sticking to LOTRO (which I can’t stop playing atm).
Is this game also really a case of No Linkshells taking new players?
I can’t believe they’ve stopped the 14 day free trial too, I’m so bummed about this. 🙁

Yes and No… Soloing is a lot easier to do as you can get some decent exp, however to really pull in the exp a party is preferred. Some parts of the game do require a full party/alliance of 6-18 to accomplish. Now though, it all depends on how you want to play, whether in a group (which you can find others via the search function who are looking for a exp party) or on your own.
Is this game also really a case of No Linkshells taking new players?
Where did you hear that? I’m a member of 4 Linkshells are they’re screaming for new players/members all the time.
I can’t believe they’ve stopped the 14 day free trial too, I’m so bummed about this. 🙁
I think that was just a short time thing to get people interested, then got rid of it and stuck with the 30 day free trial.
All in all, if you want to give it a shot, with the 30 day free trial, you’ll be able to see if you like it or not… after the 30 days, you can the decide whether to continue membership or not. I’m on Quetzecotl Server (as is Enkidoh), so if you’re looking for some people you know who play, we’d be able to help you out if you desire.
Also I saw that on the US site of FFXI the full game works out to $12AUD, however on the EU it’s $34AUD.
This is a real noob question, but the US version will work on my PC?

No, it’s not a noob question, as I asked it myself to Enkidoh years back (god… that makes me sound old >.<). For PC users, you can choose to pay in either US denominations or Euro’s. The Xbox 360 users unfortunately, can’t choose as we’re stuck with paying in Euro’s. As it’s cheaper to pay in US denominations, I say go for that payment option.
Yes. You can have up to 16 Characters on one account.
Is this game a case of "It’s passed it’s time and most players are up to endgame content and won’t want to party with you"
I’m just worried because the last thing I want is to get the game and be experiencing it alone ;-;
I played the game for a couple of weeks and solo’d all the time… (because I didn’t have no one to play with). It was kind of fun, the reason I don’t play it now is because I don’t want to do a Windows partition and install the game. Reason for THAT is the install time takes for what seems to be an eternity.
Also CC don’t go jumping on every race in the game, because there is a fee for every new character profile you create. Sure it’s (IIRC) a dollar but add 16 characters and a monthly fee.

While there are plenty of people who are up to endgame stuff, there are always experienced players who are doing other things. There’s 20 jobs in the game (for list go here: Final Fantasy XI Jobs (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Category:Jobs)), and there are always people who are leveling different jobs. Add in the Level Sync function, and you can form a party with anyone regardless of their level and sync them to the same level as the lowest party member (for example, a level 14 Warrior in a party with a level 22, 4 level 59’s and a level 78 under Level Sync, will be at the same level as the 14 Warrior and still earn the maximum amount of experience a level 14 would for their respective job).
Purrr, I understand your concern about doing stuff alone ingame as I felt the same way myself when I first started, however when you join a linkshell, there will undoubtedly be some members who would help you out with missions/quests/item synthesis/leveling/etc. If you join the same server I’m on, I’ll gladly help out with whatever you need help/info with.
That also goes for you too CC, so hurry up and get ingame lol.
Also CC don’t go jumping on every race in the game, because there is a fee for every character profile you use. Sure it’s (IIRC) a dollar but add 16 characters and a monthly fee.
It’s 1$USD per extra character on your account, as your monthly fee includes one Content ID (used to create a character or to play Tetra Master). There are five different character races:
Hume (Male/Female)
Possibly the most numerous of the five races. Humes have spread from Bastok to live all over Vana’diel. In comparison to the other races, Humes are characterized by having a fairly equal balance of abilities. Hume male characters begin play with the Hume Tunic Set. Hume female characters begin play with the Hume Vest Set. Humes starting in Bastok begin the game with the Bastokan Ring.
Elvaan (Male/Female)
A tall, slender race famed for their swordsmanship, the Elvaan form the majority of the population of San d’Oria. Elvaan male characters begin play with the Elvaan Jerkin Set. Elvaan female characters begin play with the Elvaan Bodice Set. Elvaan starting in San d’Oria begin the game with a San d’Orian Ring.
Tarutaru (Male/Female)
The Tarutaru form the majority of the population of Windurst and are known for their skill with magic. Although they outwardly resemble small children, their physical appearance belies their true age. Tarutaru characters begin play with the Tarutaru Kaftan Set. Tarutaru starting in Windurst begin the game with a Windurstian Ring.
Mithra
A race of catlike humanoids, the Mithra live in Windurst and its surrounding islands. They are characterized by their large ears, long tails, and superior agility. There are very few male Mithra, and only female Mithra venture out into the world. Mithra characters begin play with the Mithran Separates Set. Mithra starting in Windurst begin the game with a Windurstian Ring.
Galka
The Galka are a physically imposing race, and are the minority population of Bastok. Characterized by their hulking frames, the Galka are renowned for their unsurpassed strength. The Galka reproduce through a form of reincarnation and hence have no specific gender, but are generally considered to be male. Galka characters begin play with the Galkan Surcoat Set. Galka starting in Bastok begin the game with the Bastokan Ring.
Stats for all four pieces of initial starting armor give a DEF rating of 6. The nation ring stats are:
Bastokan Ring RareExclusive
[Ring] All Races
HP +3 DEX +1 VIT +1
Lv. 1 All Jobs
San d’Orian Ring RareExclusive
[Ring] All Races
DEF: 2 STR +1 MND +1
Lv. 1 All Jobs
Windurstian Ring RareExclusive
[Ring] All Races
MP +3 AGI +1 INT +1
Lv. 1 All Jobs
If you start as a Mithra in San d’Oria for example, you won’t get the San d’Orian ring until you get to Mission Rank 3 (and with San d’Oria in first place in the weekly conquest tally), as well as having 4000 Conquest Points (which you can easily get by the time you get Rank 3), you can then get the San d’Orian ring. You can also change your nationality to one of the other two powers when you get Mission Rank 6 for a set amount of gil as well.
I’m in Australia so I hope that our timezones don’t effect when we play together.
Will PM you on here Death’s Head with name etc so that I can pester you for help 😛
EDIT: Whoops, sorry Purr, I misread your post and thought you’d already bought the game, registered and were playing on Cerberus. So disregard my previous comments. 🙂
Of course, if you come to Quetza, DH or I could immediately give you a pearl to our linkshell if you’d like, so you’ll be amongst friends (or at the very least, people you’ll know). :p
Won’t be for at least a week or two. Gotta order it etc.
Also yeah will need assistance in setting up macros too (I come from MMOs with drag and drop action bars >.>)
EDIT: Also sorry Allen, how rude of me. Hi, yes it’s been too long! Hope you’re well…. Good to see a lot of friendly and familiar faces still around ^^
Also Fyi: Thinking of starting as tarutaru because they’re just so cute!!!
Level 3 tarutaru monk named Zarcian 🙂
EDIT: Ding level 6. Die. Back to level 5. Go to easier mobs and ding level 6 again.
What starting city did you chose? I might have some armour you could borrow if you want. 🙂
Have configured the game to a USB controller because using a keyboard is absolute balls lol. Still unsure how to add people to my friendlist 🙁
Level 7 now 🙂
And Corey, get your butt into FFXI then and join us. :p
Also finally hit Level 10 😀 ….Death’s Head gave me an awesome weapon so am using that now.
…Question: At what level and what requirements do you get a chocobo mount?
And….is it at level 10 that I can choose a Sub?
As for the sub-job quest, you gain that at level 18, from a quest attainable either at Mhaura or Selbina. Most people do the Selbina one, on account of being next to Valkurm Dunes where traditional exp parties used to grind between levels 10-20 (and the items required for the Selbina quest, namely Crab Apron, Damselfly Worm, and Magicked Skull) all drop from monsters found in that area (the items for the Mhaura quest likewise drop in the nearby Buburimu Peninsula area). But either one gives you the sub-job ability.
One thing to remember though about sub-jobs. You have to level it separately to your main Job, as it doesn’t gain exp while as a sub. A Job that is subbed is also set to being no more than half the level of your Main job, regardless of how high you level it as a Main (for instance, say you have Warrior (WAR) at level 20 and Monk (MNK) at level 16, and you subbed MNK to WAR. Your main job/sub job combo would then be WAR 20/MNK 10. If you then changed it to be MNK/WAR, your Main/Sub combo would be MNK 16/WAR 8.) As a result, it is imperative that you keep your sub job properly levelled in line with your Main job, as if it becomes under-levelled, it becomes ‘gimp’ or not as useful as it should be.
Originally, players took their sub jobs to level 37, as this was the limit that was required (being half of the then current level cap of 75), but now that Square Enix is finally raising the level cap to a final limit of 99 (currently the level cap is 85), people are having to go back and level their long abandoned subs just to keep from being gimp (myself included). 😀
And Corey, get your butt into FFXI then and join us. :p
Soon as I have some money to spare, you’ll have yourselves a new ally to battle the evil forces of Ganon . . . er, the evil forces of . . . evil 😀
Also Purr, in regards to setting macros, it’s a rather advanced feature (there are some commands for it I still haven’t figured out after 5 years of play!), but here are some basic macro commands (the macro templates are accessed via the ‘Macro’ button on the second page of the Main Menu and selecting a ‘Macro Book’):
Firstly, macros are usually coded in a set manner, usually a command shortcut that starts with a slash, then the ability/spell etc’s name, and finally a target in ‘< >’. Although there are tons of different macro commands, here are a few of the more useful ones you might want to use for MNK (note that there are no spaces between the ‘< >’, I had to do that in order to make the code actually appear on screen):
/ja "Boost" < me >
Standard Boost macro, which you can use every 15 seconds (Boost is a MNK ability that increases your attack power for one physical attack).
/ja "Hundred Fists" < me >This is your ‘2 Hour Ability’ (every job has a unique ability that can only be used once every two hours, hence the name). Hundred Fists greatly decreases the attack delay for physical attacks (not just hand to hand as you might think), making it extremely deadly. Like most 2 hour abilities though, it’s wise not to waste it and use it in an emergency (such as if you get several tough monsters linking on you and need to defeat them quickly). Think of it as an emergency ‘Get out of jail free card’. 😉
/ws "Combo" < t > Combo is the first weapon skill you get for hand to hand combat, and is pretty powerful at low levels.
/panic motion
/em does the tarutaru dance! Just for fun, this a macro you might often see tarutaru characters using, a customised ‘dance’ emote which is cute to watch. 😀 To get it to work, you need to type the first ‘panic’ one in the top macro slot, and the second code in the slot directly under it. If you code it wrong, it will probably throw up an error.
Once you get those above macros working, you can start to use more advanced macros, such as ones using wait timers, such as this one:
/p "BOOST!"
/ja "Boost" < me >
/wait 16
/ja "Boost" < me >
/wait 16
/ja "Boost" < me >
This macro is quite complex, but by using a wait timer allows you to automate certain abilities once their reuse timers reset, in this case, allowing you to Boost 3 times without doing anything more (Boost’s recast timer is 15 seconds). However, if you use another macro in the meantime will disrupt the this timed macro, so just be aware.
Hopefully that hasn’t been too confusing for you. More advanced macro info can be found in here: GameFAQs: Final Fantasy XI (PC) Macro Guide by nemes1s (http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/555735-final-fantasy-xi/faqs/26086)
Also got my friend Harry playing who went monk, so I switched to Warrior.
Am now MNK 15 / WAR 11
Macros are personal shortcut keys you can map to your keyboard (and apparently, control pad as well, but I only know how to make macros for the keyboard) – technically you could have a macro for just about any command or action in the game, but it’s usually better to macro your most commonly used commands or actions, such as spells, Job abilities, and emotes.
To make macros, you have to first access the Macro template from the Main Menu’s second page (on keyboard, hit the -‘ key on the numeric keypad twice and select ‘Macros’). The macro templates are divided into twenty ‘books’, allowing you to have hundreds of different macros. Select a book and it will show you two lines of macros (by default, the first two lines of the first book are automatically given some pre-made macros of standard emotes and commands, but you can erase these if you want).
The first line is for macros accessed by holding the ‘Ctrl’ key, and the second line, the ‘alt’ key. Select one of the macro buttons on either line and you’re taken to a screen with six text boxes, one small one at the top, and five larger ones underneath.
The small text box is the name of that macro, so name it something appropriate (for this example, we’ll use the WAR ability ‘Provoke’, so type ‘Voke’ and press enter, as it will only show 4 letters on the button.
Next, in the first ‘large’ text box at the top, select it and type in the following line of code and press enter (without the spaces between the ‘< >’):
/ja "Provoke" < t > So, what does this code mean? /ja is the code for ‘Job Ability’ – any job ability macros start with this code. ‘Provoke’ is naturally the command for the invaluable Provoke ability. And ‘< t >’ is the target macro for whatever happens to be your current target (in this case, an enemy monster). Some macros require a ‘< me >’ target macro instead, for spells or abilities that only work on yourself.
Now that you’ve typed your first macro, how do you actually use it? On your keyboard, simply hold down either the Ctrl or Alt keys and press the corresponding number key for the macro you created (if you did the above one it would be Ctrl+1). If you typed the macro wrong though it will probably throw up an error message in the chat log.
The Macro Guide FAQ I linked in the earlier post is a good source of information for learning the finer points of macros. As macros are so vital especially later in the game, it would be very useful to read this guide. 🙂 If you’re still having trouble understanding that, I could always screenshot the macro templates and post them here as a guide instead. 🙂
Ericca helped me out last night but had to go to work…..Is someone able to give me a hand tonight? I just need to obtain the robe from the ghosts near Mhaura / Bubu Peninsula.
Purr, I should be online later if you need help getting the Bloody Robe. Bogies are quite infrequent spawns in Buburimu (and then, as they are undead, they only spawn at night), making the Bloody Robe a very rare drop there.
However, I can easily take you to Gusgen Mines (it would involve a trip on the ferry though) as Bogies are plentiful in there (you can also get your second gate crystal at the nearby Crag of Dem too). 😀
I like Jeuno but now I realise that I cannot solo anymore and a lot of people looking for groups in Qufim are apprehensive about taking a 20 MNK / 10 WAR. 🙁
I dunno what I can do now as I am pretty much stuck in Jeuno and Qufim alone. Don’t know any high level players that would be willing to level sync or any players around my level. ;-;
…And to make it worse, because my homepoint is Jeuno, I can’t get back to Windurst or Bubu Peninsula to continue soloing.
There is another, cheaper way however – if you have at least 50 tabs saved up, simply visit one of the training manuals at the entrance to Jeuno in one of the surrounding zones (Sauromuge Champaign/Rolanberry Fields/Batallia Downs), select ‘training support, and ‘Repertration’. For 50 tabs, this is an instant warp back to your home nation in your case, Port Windurst, making it a lot easier (when I first started Fields of Valor didn’t exist so I had to do it the hard way above :p).
However, it is probably worth your while to stick at the chocobo quest. I know it is very time consuming, but don’t despair, it is easier than it appears. All you have to do is attempt to feed the chocobo four times before it will finally eat (and you can only attempt to feed it once a Vana’diel day – one hour of real time). On the fourth attempt, it will finally eat. Then feed it another three times (it will eat each time) in order to complete the quest. At the end of it, Brutus the owner of the Chocobo stable will give you your chocobo license, which allows you to rent a chocobo from any stable or handler, making travel much easier. 🙂
As for where to solo at level 20, I’d suggest sticking with either Valkurm Dunes or Buburimu Peninsula to about level 28ish, and then you could try the bats in the Qufim tunnel (don’t forget to purchase support options like Reraise if you have tabs, as they help a lot).
I got my chocobo license and am now back in Buburimu Peninsula where I feel more at home 🙂
At work at the moment but will be online when I get home around 5 AEST while kicking back with a beer or three 😀
May need assistance or an escort whenever you have the time. 🙂
I joined another Linkshell last night with a friend I’ve made and have been leveling with him almost every night. He assisted me in getting the keys for the quest to gain access to Kazham, so need to finish that in Jeuno today. Also completed the first Chains of Promathia mission and the cut scenes were awesome!
Currently 34 MNK / 12 WAR. Given up on leveling my warrior because I am STILL waiting for my copy of Wings of the Goddess to arrive so I can level DNC… Seems to be taking forever, damn you Amazon.
Hope to see you ingame soon. ^^
MNK/WAR is more or less the standard combo, as you get extra STR from WAR as well as access to some Job Abilities WAR have. Another good combo is MNK/THF (one I use myself), which can deal out some substantial punishment.
Congratulations getting past the first Chains of Promathia Mission. CoP is considerably easier now that SE has raised the level cap in former level restricted areas. The Promyvion runs, once nightmarish, now are quite easy to do. If you ever need any help, drop me a /tell if I’m ingame and I’ll see if I can come assist with others.
to get these:
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070308015908/ffxi/images/5/5c/Oshimusha_Kote.PNG.
For Monks, Samurai and Ninja, these are invaluable at low levels and even some continue to wear them in higher levels (Mainly Monks as there are slightly better gloves for Samurai and Ninja (via consuming food for their different effects)). The drop rate though is quite low, something like 4.8%, so it may take a few campings, but hopefully you’ll get them quicker than I did (1 drop out of 92 campings). You’ll need to get some higher levels to assist though, as he is a level 36 Notorious Monster.
You may also want to consider camping this NM as well:

Another MNK/SAM/NIN only piece of gear, but also is worth while having, if only for the haste bonus.
The spawning conditions for Mee Deggi the Punisher:
* Spawns around (H-8),(I-8) on Map 7 of Castle Oztroja anywhere on the ground floor. (The North courtyard)
* Spawn window opens up after 50 minutes, but has taken up to about 6 hours to spawn.
* The placeholder is either a Yagudo Drummer or Yagudo Interrogator.
* Mee Deggi the Punisher can pop at any time before the 12 minute cooldown for the Placeholder is up. See: Quu Domi the Gallant
* With the above being said. It is believed that Mee Deggi the Punisher can pop in 1 minute intervals after the death of his placeholder. (IE: PH ToD: 3:00:00PM. Pop time: 3:01:00; 3:02:00… ect) all the way up to the 12 minute respawn.
* Uses Hundred Fists.
* Will either drop Impact Knuckles or Ochimusha Kote, but not both. Because of this, it is possible Treasure Hunter has no effect.
For Quu Domi the Gallant:
* Lottery spawn at (H-7) and (H-8) in the courtyard, on map 6 (South Courtyard) from the Yagudo Herald and Yagudo Oracle, every 60+ minutes however because it is a lottery spawn, it can take significantly longer.
* Placeholder is either a Yagudo Herald or a Yagudo Oracle.
* Placeholder can be found by pulling every Yagudo Herald and Yagudo Oracle to the top of the Center platform, and using Hide. The one that does not despawn is the current placeholder. Yagudo’s Elemental will not be fooled by Hide, and must be killed prior to activating the Job Ability for this method to work.
* After the placeholder’s death, a window opens where Quu Domi the Gallant can spawn anywhere in the room, including the center platform until the 12 minute cool-down is up. However he can spawn when the placeholder was due to (12 minutes exactly).
* When using Wide Scan, the order of the list is:
* Cutter
* Cutter
* Cutter
* Cutter
* Cutter
* Yagudo Drummer
* Yagudo Interrogator
* Yagudo Herald/Yagudo Oracle
* Quu Domi the Gallant
* Yagudo Conquistador
* The Yagudo Herald/Yagudo Oracle is the placeholder, and it can spawn anywhere in the room.
* Note the placeholder will spawn as either the Yagudo Herald OR the Yagudo Oracle. Both cannot spawn simutaniously.
* Will drop either a Strider Sword or Sarutobi Kyahan, though many players claim Treasure Hunter does not affect the drop rate, there is no evidence to support this claim.
* Uses Mijin Gakure, however if whoever was fighting Quu Domi the Gallant is defeated, he will not use it again for at-least another 2 hours (Earth Time).
* Soloable by most jobs level 50, by many significantly earlier.
Also I cannot thank you and Ericca enough for helping me unlock SAM. All these side quests are really secretive and without an external FAQ or the help of the Linkshell, I’d be completely lost.
I’m not at home at the moment, but I have tomorrow off and will definitely get the SAM sword from South Gustaberg as my sword DEFINITELY needs an upgrade and I really don’t have the gil to be spending at the Auction House in Jeuno. And I should be able to solo the NM with my monk easily, which is good news.
In regards to the above post; doesn’t look like I’ll be able to solo them, and I also have NO idea how to get to Castle Oztroja, but will try and find out from people once I’m in game.
See you in Vana’Diel soon!
Also CC hurry up and get in game…! We’re on Quetzacoatl server and you can message me and I’ll give you a hand with anything you need (and what I know), as I’m sure Death’s Head and Enkidoh will also be happy to help, as they have with me. ^^
Also…my copy of {Wings of the Goddess} STILL hasn’t arrived. I am furious. It was meant to come mid October….Damn you Australia Post! >:
Carnero will be easy to kill for your MNK, as it’s a NM in a starting area, and they are usually around level 10-15 or so. That Great Katana it drops IS worth it trust me.
When you get to Rank 4, you need to head to Castle Oztroja for part of it. It’s located in Meriphataud Mountains, so next time you’re ingame I can show you it’s location
Don’t trust Australia Post. I’ve lost many packages due to the ineptitude of their workers.
Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it and I may return. But for now, I simply couldn’t bring myself to continue the grind.
Incidentally, if you do come back, DH and I could probably get you a pearl for another ls, as JingZen is sadly pretty much defunct now (this new one has tons of members). 🙁
Yeah the WoW guild I’m in isn’t really going anywhere in regards to endgame progression at the moment and I feel like I’ve already done the 80-85 Cataclysm content to death.
I have been spending a lot of time thinking about coming back to FFXI, only if I did I would buy the US version of the Ultimate Collection. And as much as I adored being Ericca’s ‘football’ I would roll a Hume, and possibly start in Bastok. And I would make it past level 36….as I really want to see all the great content FFXI has to offer!
It’s quite expensive to get your old Content ID reactivated, so I would be starting from scratch. And I really do miss you guys, and all the help you gave me. I also made a few friends outside of JingZen that I met on my travels and I miss them too. FFXI’s community is SO much better than WoW’s (excluding the RL friends I play WoW with, of course).
Hmm, let me think about it some more. I also need to take into consideration that I still have WoW time until 23rd of February….so it would be wise to at least make the most of that.
Gave in and just purchased The Ultimate Collection which is downloading as I type this. Considering the sluggish download speed, the installation, registration and patching process I probably won’t be able to play until later tomorrow.
When I finally get online I will send a friend request to Enkidoh and DH (Ariellyanna from memory?) …hope to see you guys on Quetzalcoatl again soon!
See you in Vana’diel then! 😀
My PlayOnline name is Purrr. Please send me a friend request as I tried searching for you but to no avail.
I don’t know why a Friend Request to me would bounce – my PoL status is set for Online (when I’m logged in). Unless, it’s because my PlayOnline account is linked with a Square Enix Account (that I created to play FFXIV but never used – I linked them together to register a Security Token that came with my copy of FFXIV, because doing so allows you to use something called a ‘Mog Satchel’ in FFXI that greatly increases item storage space), and the SE account’s own Friend List (which is empty for me) might be somehow ‘invalidating’ any PoL friend requests sent to me.
I’ll try sending you one instead in PoL Purrr – I’m really sorry that it didn’t work for you. The only other thing I could suggest is wait til you get in game and create your character, and try sending me the Friend Request in FFXI instead – that usually works for me.
It will still be a very long time until I’m in game because apparently I still have 5 hours of patching to go…
EDIT: am thinking of going BLM / RDM
Am leveling my sub first so level 10 RDM, and will head to Konstacht tomorrow.
Night night ^^
Edit: it’s so hard to find a decent weapon. Bastok AH is crap, gil is hard to come by, and the vendor doesn’t have any decent RDM items at all….
Update
Am 14 RDM, not long to go for my sub job quest. 🙂
Haven’t seen Enki or DH online yet, so feeling a little lonely. Already can’t wait to get started on BLM 😀
As for low-level RDM equip, lately the AH has been pretty dead for low level stuff for some reason, so I’d suggest trying the NPC shops instead (there’s weapon and armour stores on the street south west of the AH in Bastok Markets, which I think sell low level swords and I think there’s also a weapon shop in Bastok Mines as well).
Armour wise, if you’re soloing it would be better to use heavier armour than robes for RDM, as the extra defense will make the difference – the most up to date set (and easiest to aquire at that point) for level 14 RDM would be the Bone Harness set, which I’m pretty sure is sold at the aforementioned armour shop.
Additionally, once you’ve done a few easy quests and have some fame behind you, find a guy by the name of Elki (that’s Elki not ‘Enki’ ;)) in the Inn in Bastok Mines – he’ll give you two reasonably easy quests – the second one will reward you with a Small Sword, which is equippable by RDM at level 18, so it’s worth doing. 🙂
Also thanks for the advice regarding RDM weapons. I am finding my RDM to be a lot weaker than my taru MNK because I’m level 14 and only starting Konstacht now. This will hopefully be made easier once I do the sub job quest and eventually go BLM / RDM 🙂
Am currently 4 WHM / 2 RDM (but 19 RDM solo)
Looking forward to that ever elusive LS invite >.>
Healing in FFXI is really hectic! Not being able to see party member’s debuffs is annoying 😛
Also going to a birthday party tonight so probably won’t be in game until tomorrow. ^^
Needless to say I’m not happy, especially as POL access seems to be the only thing affected – normal web browsing works fine. I’m going to keep trying to log into the game but I don’t like my chances (I hope the dragon fight went okay for you). 🙁
I am almost Level 42 WHM / 21 RDM and really don’t know where to level these days. Someone suggested Western Altepa Desert but I have no idea how to get there and when I look it up online it seems like a very difficult place to get to.
I also need help on my Bastok rank (up to Jeuno mission which requires killing a NM in Delkfutt’s Tower if I’m not mistaken) but I am out of tabs and cant get back to Bastok atm so am hoping to get into a lower level sync party to acquire more tabs for repatriation.
EDIT: Tried to unlock DNC tonight and it all went well until I hit a snag…will explain when I see you ingame lol.
EDIT: Enki helped me unlock DNC (woot) and start the SCH quest.
Today I got my AF1 weapon yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy! ^^
I still use the Blessed Hammer at level 75+ WHM for the MP boost (especially with a Holy Shield equipped in the other hand, but you can’t equip that til level 50 WHM) so it’s a very good weapon to use for stats. Melee damage though, it leaves a lot to be desired (but then at that level WHM isn’t exactly a DD anyway :p).
Btw, do you have Altana Viewer? Just if you didn’t, I could send you it, as it’s a very good program to use, especially for FFXI sig creation (it’s a FFXI model viewer in case you were wondering ;)).
Making new sig now ^^ thanks Enki 🙂
edit: updated 😀
In the meantime I might level something else. ^^
For info on how to get the Armor:
White Mage Healer’s Mitts. Quest to earn these is "Borghertz’s Healing Hands" (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Borghertz%27s_Healing_Hands) – Note, after completing this quest, you can then hunt for the two pieces of Artifact Armor found in Treasure Coffers in dungeons. You’ll need to go along as WHM and farm a Treasure Coffer Key to open these chests.
White Mage Healer’s Cap – Treasure Coffer in Garliage Citadel
Here is a map of Garliage Citadel and known locations for the Treasure Coffer to spawn in:
The Treasure Coffers are the small red dots.
Monsters which drop the Coffer key are:
Fallen Mage (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Fallen_Mage)
Fallen Major (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Fallen_Major)
Hellmine (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Hellmine)
Magic Jug (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Magic_Jug)
Over Weapon (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Over_Weapon)
Tainted Flesh (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Tainted_Flesh)
Vault Weapon (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Vault_Weapon)
Wraith (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Wraith)
White Mage Healer’s Pantaloons – Treasure Coffer in Crawler’s Nest
Here is a map of Crawler’s Nest and the locations of possible spawns for the Treasure Coffers:
Treasure Coffers are marked in red.
Mobs which drop the Coffer Key are:
Helm Beetle (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Helm_Beetle)
Knight Crawler (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Knight_Crawler)
The other two pieces are rewards for completing the following quests:
White Mage Healer’s Briault – The quest is called "Pieuje’s Decision" (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Pieuje%27s_Decision)
http://images.wikia.com/ffxi/images/c/cd/Healers_duckbills.JPG
White Mage Healers Duckbills – The quest is called "Prelude of Black and White" (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Prelude_of_Black_and_White)
You’ll need some high level help to get these quests done, but trust me… this armor is worth the trouble of getting, especially as soon as you can. When you hit the level you can equip it, do so. Also… as a White Mage, it is ideal for you to get these spells as you never know when you’ll need them. Here is a link to a page with a listing of all White Magic, and where/how to acquire them, White Mage Spell List (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/White_Mage_Spell_List). Some of these spells can be used by Red Mage as well as Scholar and Paladin, so it is in your best interest to get them if you can.
I hate having to need so much help throughout the entire game ><
Edit: Got G1 done today yay!
I should be in game later today so hopefully I’ll be able to catch you online (Arie should be able to set you up with a pearl to our linkshell too – Purrr is also a member of it. :)).
<3 Windurst
@Jabeo
What server are you on? Enkidoh, Purrr, CC and myself are on Quetzacoatl. I think it’s high time we started up a Forum LS again. Anyone interested?

Nice! Also a Forum LS would be a great idea.
Enkidoh and Rakien helped me beat Shadowlord last night so now I’m Rank 6 😀
Also got my last piece of Artifact Armour:
Also in regards to CC’s confusion with the controls: Either plug in a controller or switch to ‘Compact Keyboard’ mode.
And I found the default graphics on the PC version were AWFUL and used these steps to make it look a lot better:
http://forum.mmosite.com/topics/185/200902/22/167,1.html
Other than that, welcome to Vana’diel! It certainly has it’s difficulties (when compared to more recent MMORPGs) but is well worth the effort. I now have no life >.>
Got my Ninja to 60 (finally) so now it’s retired… for now. Gone back to working on Paladin, as that’s the only other job I have, which is relatively less expensive to level than some of my others (Scholar, Bard, Ranger, Corsair and Beastmaster). Once Paladin is 60… finally going to work on my jobs at 60.
I will try and make an effort to pop in more often, but my sleeping pattern has finally returned to normal, which means not many people will be online when I am.
Also Revan, it would be good to pt together when you get around to working on your 60s ^^
PLD would be nice so then we wouldn’t have to wait an ETERNITY to get a pt started. 🙂
Mostly because my sleeping pattern is back to AEST, I often don’t see a lot of people on.
Considering April will not be billed I might stick around for a bit longer hoping things will pick up. After then… I dunno…. I’m finding it really hard to get back into.
I really hope this changes.
If you want to level another job, I could probably help you out with low level armor/gear/etc if you want.
It’ll have to be another night sorry matey.
Will be online tonight to start another pt. I also need to get a WHM testimony for my Maat fight soon ^^,
I haven’t seen Arie or Enki on for a while. Miss you guys.
i’ve been playing xiv for a while but tbh i just cant get into it..
To learn more about Abyssea, go here (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Abyssea). Lot easier to level now as well (current level cap is 90, with 99 being the final level cap to be added sometime around September) and hopefully the rumored three full expansions will be released sometime soon.
As you can see in the following map:
Only 40% of Vana’diel explored at this time, there’s still the eastern half of the Aht Urghan continent, the Mithra homeland to the south, the Orc and Gigas homeland to the north and the Elvaan homeland to the west. Here’s hoping that these areas will be made available soon for FFXI. For more info about the Distant Continents of Vana’diel, go here (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/The_Distant_Continents_of_Vana%27diel).
I’ve been trying to find it everywhere but to no avail. I want to come back, but would rather play it on 360.
Also do FFXIV legacy members get a discount on XI?
EDIT: I need PAL region too dont I?

Revan got the 360 version years ago when it was first released. Having said that though, it should still be available for sale – I’ve seen it for sale recently at my local EB Games, but they can be very unreliable when it comes to keeping stock. Worst case scenario would be to check online Purrr – I’ve seen tons for sale on eBay for instance, so that’s always an option.
As for reduced fees for FFXI, that was indeed offered until recently if you had both an active FFXI account and an active FFXIV account that were linked together on the one SE Account, but SE phased the FFXI fee reduction a few days ago in preparation for the FFXIV ‘2.0’ launch in a few months. So I’m sorry to say it’s no longer available. I think you were confused though Purrr with the ‘Legacy’ fee reduction – FFXIV players who have been confirmed as part of the ‘Legacy’ group (that is, current FFXIV players who have had an account active longer than 9 months) will be having permanent reduced fees for FFXIV service only though once the 2.0 version launches. This has no connection to FFXI fees as far as has been stated.
And finally, you would probably need to use the PAL version if you’re using a PAL 360, as it wouldn’t even load without a mod chip otherwise. Not to mention the SE account system locks versions to your geographical area, so playing a US version when you’ve set your SE account to say Australia would be difficult if not impossible I’m sorry to say. PC is a little bit easier, but I’m pretty sure you can’t set versions from different regions on the one SE account – it won’t work. It’s much more stricter than what the old POL system used to be which was very lax when it came to region lockout.
P.S. disregard the map in Revan’s old post – that map has been proven to be an inaccurate fan-creation, hence why it’s hidden away on FFXIcyclopedia – it’s just a piece of fanart that shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Thanks for the info Enki.
I have only seen Wings of the Goddess on 360 at EB games, and they’ve stopped stocking that recently.
I have searched high and low online for a PAL 360 version of FFXI (even just up to ToAU). Sure there are a couple on eBay, but they are all used, and if they’re used, I run the risk of registration / activation codes also being used.
Thanks for clearing the payment issue up, I was getting confused between Legacy status and the offer they were promoting a while back.
My SE account is a Legacy membership only, so maybe I’ll check FFXIV 2.0 out at the discounted subscription price.
Sigh, I guess I’m just out of luck for finding FFXI PAL 360. I’m hoping they re-release it when Adoulin comes out.
EDIT: Even the EU PlayOnline website only has the PC version at the moment, while the US site has both versions ; ;
Such a shame old school parties don’t happen anymore and that everyone solos to 30 just to leech in Abyssea…
Enkidoh do you still play?

Enkidoh do you still play?
That’s great Purrr! And yes I still play, although I haven’t been in game much lately due to real-life stuff competing for my time. :p (I was in game for a while last night though and saw you online, but you logged moments later when I tried sending you a /tell :().
CoP does linkshell ‘GoV’ parties though or low lvl sync ones from time to time, so there is alternatives to just Aby leeching (I think I’ve annoyed enough people in CoP with my opinions on Abyssea to say anything more on that subject :p).
Anyway, if I’m in game when you’re next online, send me a tell or a yell in the ls if you need any help Purrr (being level 99 in multiple jobs opens up a lot of avenues for soloing which didn’t exist before ;)).
P.S. I’m having issues browsing the FFXI section of this site due to this section being riddled with ad spam (which can only be seen by mods/admin), so if I’m slow to respond to posts here that’s the reason why I’m sorry to say.
I will prob be going WHM/SCH, but right now getting my WHM to 30 when no one parties isn’t an easy task lol.
Will surely see you in game soon 🙂
Having said that, I’m hoping to return to Vana’diel by the weekend… but not promising anything.
I admit I’ve only been playing on and off lately as I’ve been playing a surprising amount of reloaded FFXIV 1.0 lately which has been distracting me. 😉 So I might have missed you if you have been in game.
Just enjoying a bit of a break from the demands of FFXI for a bit. But I have kept my acc details so won’t have any problems when I return.
That’s not to say I’m giving up on FFXI – definitely not. I will still be playing when I’m able to. But lately I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to log into FFXI regularly now so it’s going to get to the point that I won’t be surprised to log into FFXI one day after an extended period out of the game to find CoP has been disbanded. It’s happened to me with other linkshells I’ve been in in the past, and will happen again.
Wow, lol I wasn’t expecting that. I did Voidwatch a bit with CoP (and my mate Prettyshambolic) and had a blast. It was good fun, but I agree with it being difficult to get missions done. I basically solo’d half of Chains of Promathia (except I’m up to that part that can’t be solo’d where you need two types of keys or something, I cant remember) and I couldn’t find anyone to help with Zilart missions either so I still don’t have access to Sea or Sky. Lefty helped me a bit with Aht Uhrgan and Wings of the Goddess just confuses me lol. But yeah the LS is different now to how it used to be. Not only the LS, but players in general. No one is interested in the stories or characters of Vana’diel anymore.
I reached rank 10 with Bastok and was working on my rank 3 missions with Windy before I stopped playing, and the only motivation I had to doing these things were xbox achievements lol.
Enki I hope FFXIV 2.0 is good. I can’t play it until I get my PC fixed (need a new GPU) but hopefully I can get that done before it launches. I do have Legacy status on my account though ^^

I still need to finish off Zilart, Promathia, Aht Urghan, Wings of the Goddess as well as two of the mini expansions… I asked in CoP once (when Enkidoh and Ciaraleone weren’t ig) and was promptly ignored. Someone else logged in, asked to do Promathia missions and BOOM! CoP LS Promathia party! They asked if anyone else needed them, I replied in the affirmative… again, promptly fucking ignored. That LS is garbage now and Ciaraleone refuses to see it! Says it’s "all in my head"… When even Enkidoh has seen it!
Fuck that ls…
Slightly off topic but anyway – although the FFXIV 2.0 Alpha has wound up, sadly I’m still bound by the NDA til the Open Beta, so unfortunately I can’t go into any details about it, but I will say that is it looking very, very good and will be well worth playing. Besides, there’s always the PS3 version if your PC won’t handle it (really though, my way of thinking is – if your computer could run FFXIV 1.0 it will be able to handle 2.0 too ;)).
Back onto FFXI: I haven’t logged into FFXI in several weeks now as I’ve been too busy with other things. But I confirm what Revan stated about being ignored in CoP Purrr – most of the old members have left with a whole heap of newbies joining who are antisocial and elitist and have basically shunned Revan for no apparent reason. Little wonder why Revan is annoyed by it and wants to leave the game (incidentally I spoke to Jing on Windows Live yesterday about coming back to FFXI and he seems to be virtually deadset against the idea, so even a possible revival of JingZen as an alternative to CoP won’t be happening any time soon. :(). *sighs*
/sigh how sad…
FFXI is dead to me… which is a shame as I had a lot of fond memories… now… /snaps disc in half and throws out the window
And its good to catch up with Wonka, Kadian, Berto, Ericca and my good mate Shambo again.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to login to FFXI lately, not due to personal choice, but because I can’t – for reasons I don’t really want to go into, as they’re not pleasant. (It’s a long story involving a certain ‘person’ from JingZen before you joined Purrr).
So yeah, until this is resolved, I don’t think I’m going to be in FFXI much if at all sadly. FFXIV Beta starts in a week though so that will be distracting me anyway (can’t wait to see 1.0 Enki in her new 2.0 graphic form :3).

Fair enough Enki, I do miss our adventures though 🙂
I have signed up for the FFXIV beta too, just waiting for the email with the download link etc. What server will you be on?
