Susumu Hirasawa Discography (J-Electro) [MU]

平沢進 (HIRASAWA Susumu) was born in T???ky??? on 2 April 1954. In 1972 he attended 東京デザイナー学院 (T???ky??? Designer Academy) and formed his first band Mandrake, which would last for 6 years. When MANDRAKE came to an end in 1978, only a year later P-Model was formed, a new project for which he was accompanied by 2 other ex-members of MANDRAKE.
P-MODEL was a techno-pop that, with Susumu’s genius and vision, broke down barriers and was always a step ahead of the techno boom that was occurring in Japan at the time. Susumu also launched a solo career, initially as a side-project to P-MODEL, with the album 時空の水 (Jik??? no Mizu) in 1989.

Wow, another Hirasawa fan. Thanks for taking the time to upload all of this; it’s a fantastic collection.

Hirasawa is a true master. My favourite musician, actually. When I first listened to his solo works, my life changed forever. I’m really thankful for such an experience and thankful to you for spreading his amazing work to other people. He really is the cream of the crop. I’ll upload Vistoron (2006 album) later for listening pleasure.

Vistoron is P-Model, a group he is part of, that one is 2004 I think. Susumu is indeed a great musican. I will try to upload all his P model (have a fair amount so far), mandrake and osts later too.

Vistoron was actually done by Mr. Hirasawa solely, but under the name of KAKU P-Model, which is sort of a spin off of P-Model, if you will.

I love Susumu’s music, OMG thank you!

This would be pretty nice. I really appriciated the torrent but I was a little upset that so much of the stuff was in 128 or 160 kbps. Yeah yeah, I know beggars can’t be choosers, but I’ve spent enough on these discs already, and it’s not as though they are easy to get in the US. Right now I have the Error CD and Detonator Orgun 1 soundtrack in only 128 kbps (the 3rd one I have in 320, the 2nd I have not at all), so it would be cool to get ups of those.

I also suspect that some of the early albums (especially Virtual Rabbit and Ghost in Science) may be transcodes. I listened to Virtual Rabbit today and although it’s listed as 192 it really had a compressed drum sound that is a sign of a 128 rip. Disappointing because that album is pretty good!!

If you have rare material, all the better 🙂

As for myself…I do have a great rip myself of the Ashu-on box-set, which AFAIK contains everything that P-Model has ever released, including some very rare stuff. I’ll be happy to fill any requests.

Nice…I already have the box set, but yeah this is all really worth having. I don’t know much about Hirasawa and can’t find too much info on him, I was wondering if anyone knew the story behind some of these non-album tracks? In particular there is that release Fukyoka-Kyoku-Shu 88 with just one song called "No Bird", which is amazing, but it’s kind of a bad quality live recording. Is this on a different album? Or is it a track from a different artist? I know "Call Up Here" was written by Teruo Nakano while he was in P-Model, I’m wondering if this one is the same?

Only 7 tracks? I thought he was doing one for each solo album ?? Oh well given how good the last one turned out I can’t really complain. Especially if we’re getting a new version of "Bandiria Travellers" which is one of my absolute favorite SH tunes.

Yeah, it kinda sucks he stopped after Technique of Relief, I wanted to vote for one from Philosopher’s Propeller and Blue Limbo. But maybe he’ll continue later, who knows.

Oh, I want to listen to Tobira Jima, I love how the original starts building up and the sketches for this one were pretty nice.

Yeah I guess you could say the same for the P-Model one too, there was only 10 tracks and it missed a few albums like Scuba, Potpurri, and P-Model or Die. Maybe they were just taking too long? I mean I haven’t even heard the full album yet but judging by the tracks I’ve heard ("Chevron" and "Art Blind") these are pretty damn massive. As for this one, the Parnesian Circle one may be like 12 minutes long again, so at least there’s that. I really wanted "Snow Blind" though 🙁

That said I really love this thread, can we get some discussion about the albums? Like, which are your favorite/least favorite?

I’m going through the discography chronologically, and I’m only up to Aurora (1994) so I haven’t heard as much but so far going through the P-Model boxset and the SH albums I’ve found has been a revelation. The man is straight up amazing. Some observations:

The song "No Bird" in the box set is incredible. Although it is actually just kind of a remake of "Be in a Fix".

Some of the P-Model albums seem to have some really neat production things going on – Karkador is one of the best produced synthpop albums I’ve ever heard, while Perspective is very claustorphobic (perhaps intentionally so). Sometimes he seems to really drop the ball though (Scuba sounds terrible, and his first three solo albums have very strange compression effects on the percussion).

The 1992 album P-Model is in a very different style than anything previously done, but listening to it again I’m noticing that the songwriting is very similar to In a Model Room!

On November, it was announced that the production for Satoshi Kon’s movie was resumed, so it will happen : ) That announcement also confirmed Hirasawa as the composer of the music, so we can only hope this new version will be used.

My question though is if anyone managed to get a hold of that Tetragrammaton album, where he collaborates with an Italian metal artist. Just so you guys know…Hirasawa’s official site has a bunch of free MP3 downloads of instrumentals and some Pevo stuff; all you have to do is register on the site and you can download them. Some of it sounds really good. The only problem is that the downloads seem to quit in the middle a lot…so make sure you have the whole file.

btw; does anyone have any of his DVDs? And if so, could you please please please post some kind of a rip? I want to hear them badly but don’t really want to shell out $50-60 apiece on them

The downloads of those albums in this thread are 192kbps rips that are transcodes of pretty bad 320kbps rips. I’m grateful for them being available at least, but I’m trying to get each release in the best possible quality I can. If I had a job, I’d just import them, but even that would still be pretty expensive. I’m considering importing a Japan itunes card, but I’m hoping there might be an easier way.

I suspect all three of these albums were originally converted from 320kbps mp3s by someone and then shared; probably because the 320kbps files were ripped with a sample rate of 48,000 Hz, which some music players have problem playing.

I would also like to see if anyone else has the Nano-Duplication Memorials, or any of the other extra tracks from Hirasawa, P-MODEL and KAKU P-MODEL. Those seem to be the rarest and hardest to find.

Essence sounds crappy, but not as bad as those mp3 files. It’s not a transcode. Maybe it contains pre-emphasis? I know a lot of early Japanese released CDs do.
Pre-emphasis – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-emphasis) But, it also could just be because of Hirasawa’s equipment choices and program choices at the time.

Edit: Nevermind. Misunderstood the first part of your message. As I mentioned before in my previous post, the album may have pre-emphasis, which can cause the album to sound "bright" and harsh when not properly decoded. Big problem though is that it’s actually hard to properly decode(AKA de-emphasize) pre-emphasis on a pc, believe it or not. If you post it, I’ll try to figure it out if it does have it.

I second the above user. Judging from the bits uploaded to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-njHKJRg3J4), Sim City sounds amazing, I just hope that Hirasawa releases DVDs of his last 3 live shows already, he has never taken this long to release a live DVD before, unless he doesn’t want to release any, which would be a shame.

In other news, HALDYN DOME still hasn’t been released for download (at least here, don’t wanna deal with russian sites that require registration) and Universal has reissued their backlog. I bring those up for 2 reasons:

1. There’s some stuff on the boxset I haven’t heard yet (How about FUKO? and the exclusives)

2. I wanna know if the whole "first 3 solo albums sound like crap" thing is a mastering issue. Before the box, there was only one type of master available for the 89-91 stuff, the originals. Now, we have 2 new masters that may or may not sound different. From what I can tell, if it isn’t the mastering, it’s the mixing, and if it isn’t the mixing, it’s the MIDI sequencing (Hirasawa originally sequenced MIDI with his Korg M1 synth, from the P-MODEL s/t to the Paprika o/s/t, he sequenced MIDI with the Amiga program Bars and Pipes).

Now, about discussing Hirasawa stuff, this magazine article circa ’87-88 (http://lazycalm-magazine.blog.so-net.ne.jp/rockland88) lists some albums (I think there’s some individual songs mixed in tho) that Hirasawa was listening at the time, kinda telling of what he would do with MONSTER and the 3 solo albums.

01: J Town a Go Go (Jタウン・ア・ゴーゴー)/Concretes (コンクリーツ) – I haven’t found much info about this band. Y-Ko, Bachi Bachi Sonic’s main vocalist, is a member of this band. Here’s the song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32k5eG-496g).
02: Dissolving Heart (心とかしてよ)/TOTSUZEN DANBALL (突然段ボール) – Eiichi Tsutaki, who did the percussion of FLOOR, was the drummer. Here’s a blog post Hirasawa wrote shortly after his passing (he mentions this song in it) (http://noroom.susumuhirasawa.com/modules/phantom/archives/59).
03: Bol???ro/Ravel – Hirasawa likes the energy of this one.
04: Alps Yodel (アルプス・ヨーデル)/VA – A Toshiba-EMI ethnic music comp of, well, yodelling music from the Alps. You get one try to guess what Hirasawa song this might have inspired.
05: Great Movie Sounds of John Barry (007～ジョン・バリーの世界)/John Barry and his Orchestra – A literal translation of the japanese title would be "007: John Barry’s World". Compilation of music from the James Bond guy.
06: Phaedra/Tangerine Dream – I can hear Hirasawa nicking bits of this for tracks like Recovery Ship.
07: I think this is A Tape of Tahitian Ukulele Music, "タヒチの一日" doesn’t explain much.
08: Mental Notes/Split Enz – …mid-70’s Gabriel-era-Genesis-style kiwi rock.
09: Let the Power Fall/Robert Fripp – Would Landscapes/Kun Mae be Hirasawa’s answer to Frippertronics? Who knows, but overdubs are cheating.
10: I/Peter Gabriel – Hirasawa’s first 3 solo albums seem like he was trying to do a "right" version of this.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I’ve been dying to know, does anyone here happen to have the website version of Philosopher’s Propeller? All of the songs have different arrangements, some slight, some more major. It’s the one thing I can’t find online, and I have even have been thinking about buying it, but I think it’s a bit overpriced, especially for such low bitrate mp3s (only 128kbps).
