Hopefully this is the right section for asking this..

I don’t know much of game music data ripping (the only way I’ve acquired soundtracks so far is by recording them directly from the game while it’s running). So, I’m wondering how exactly do I manage to convert the audio files on my playstation discs into a useable format?

Is there a program that aids in this, or does it require actually hacking into the game discs files?

The short answer to both your first and second question: It depends.

I don’t have much experience with Playstation games, but yes, there are specialized programs that can help with the ripping process. Of the two Playstation games I ripped, one of them required a specialized program to extract the audio files in a useable format (.wav). The result was relatively nice, but it wasn’t completely perfect, so that’s something to keep in mind. Which specialized program you need depends on the format of the audio files within the game disc. If you can figure out which files on the game disc are supposed to be the audio files (they tend to be the larger files), then you can just use Google to see if there’s a progam to convert/rip the file into a useable format. Like I said, I don’t have much experience with Playstation games, so I don’t know if there is a universal audio ripping program for most Playstation games.

Of course, some Playstation games have audio files that can be ripped with any audio ripper, but I’m sure you knew about that already. Other Playstation games may require "hacking", and if that’s the case, then you might be out of luck.

Thanks for the advice. Do you still have that program you used to rip those 2, out of curiosity?

There’s a program called PsxMC (PSX Multi Converter) that can extract from some PS1 games…

For the life of me, I can’t remember which program I used to rip the one game CD (the other CD used redbook audio, so it was ripped with EAC), but I believe Cube Media Player also works for some Playstation and Playstation 2 games.

Google PSound. It works on pretty much all PSX and PS2 games. I’ve also used it on Dreamcast and Xbox games. It has an option to extract the files to lossless .wav files.

I tried out PCsxMC and it works great! I’ll also give Psound a try, if I have any issues. Thanks, guys!

Get the music from:
http://www.zophar.net/music/psf.html

Get the winamp addon from:
http://www.zophar.net/utilities/psf/highly-experimental.html

In Winamp, with that addon installed, go to Preferences, then Output, and choose the disk writer, and be sure to specify the output path for neatness. This will output Winamp’s audio stream to .wav files on the disk. Then use a converter program to change it all to .mp3.

Oh, by the way, I am assuming that you are not a loser and have winamp installed.

Cube Media works for me, but sometimes MFAudio should be used to rip, and CMP to get offsets.

I recommend MFAudio aswell.

I used PSMPlay recently and it was quite useful.

I’ve also used PSound successfully with other games.
PsxMC requires ASAPI to be installed from what I remember.
