final fantasy VII vs Xenogears

i’m just wondering who among you have played both and which did you think was better?

This is actually a real coincidence because I’m downloading Xenogears right now for my PSX emulator!

So I will keep you posted on what I think.

Actually, I’m pretty well convinced that I like Saga more than Gears. But I’m crazy o_O

Yeah I have Xenosaga Ep II and I liked it a lot, but never got to play gears.

But then again I may be crazy because I liked Crisis Core better than VII :p

I’m glad someone else in this life likes Ep. II. I find it to be challenging w/o being frustrating to the point of throwing controllers.

near your bed and lay in bed for days on end playing awesome old school RPGs like Xenosaga, Star Ocean 2, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia and other amazing titles that I fail to remember.

Also I wouldn’t play any of the FFs, I hear they suck ;_;

Xenogears is better than Final Fantasy VII in every way. It’s the last time the so-called "Dream Team" made a game before most of them left Square-Enix.

It’s a true RPG classic right up their with Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy IV/VI/IX, Lunar Series, etc.

I liked FF7 more. But that is since i played it first, and the first tends to be best. I enjoyed xenogears in another deeper way i guess. And i would say xenogears is better so i wish that was my first RPG. But i have to be faithful to FF7 so…ff7 is the best

id have to say i was pretty immersed in the story line of xenogears. i’d say xeno now 2day…

Xenogears is a half finished mess of a game. Then again, FFVII is an entirely finished mess of a game so…uh, abstain?

lol. I like how the story telling parts of Disc 2 are paralled in the lack of FMVs in Ep. III.

As bad as Xenosaga III’s game design gets, it has nothing on Xenogears. I cannot think of another game where they show you a slide show of what was clearly intended to be a full dungeon then get you to fight a boss battle.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. XSIII summarizes an entire episode worth of events into a 5 minute monologue and then expects you to read the database to find out the rest. That was awful.

Yes. Jan Sauer/Voyager incident deserved an FMV more than anything in the entire game, maybe even series.

I’m not to fussed about that since there was actually a game that dealt with that whole Voyager thing. It was for mobile phones of course so we didn’t get it (which I am fussed about). It’s a pretty stupid way of dealing with things since it filled out the backstory for several major characters but at least they tried to give it the attention it deserved with a full game. I was talking about the whole Nephilim/Grimoire story that was turned into some shitty flash animation (that also was never translated).

I still don’t understand/know exactly what you’re refering to with that, and I’m still o_O over the whole Shion/KOS-MOS/T-elos….THING. I need to replay Ep. III if not the entire series.

It’s the "A Missing Year" plot that bridges the gap between Episode II and Episode III. It details the story of Nephalim (which is never touched upon in the actual games besides in the database) and tells the full story of why Shion had left Vector by the beginning of Episode III.

I’m gonna have to say that’s a toughie… Even though Xenogears was an awesome game, I’m pretty sure I’ve only played the game through entirely like once. While i can’t even remember how many times I’ve played ffvii all the way through, at least 4 or 5 doing all the side quests.

As for Xenosaga, I thought Ep1 was great, played it through a couple times but after that its kinda boring, not enough side quests or extra bosses…the card game is fun to go back and play occasionally though. I absolutely hated Ep2 it was horrible, I only finished it to get through the story line to play the next game. Ep3 I thought was as good as Xenosaga1, I may have even had more fun playing it. Played it twice and will probably play it again whenever I get the itch to.

I’ve been really itching to play some psx FF games lately. I need to re-buy FFVIII, it got lost somehow and its the only FF i haven’t played to death.

Gears is one of the best PSone RPGs out there. Doesnt quite top FF7 though.

But then again, I no longer think as highly as FF7 as I did before.

Xenogears is better than FF7 imo, although not as much, considering the engine wasn’t too great or full to it’s potential. Both games were great, so I wouldn’t really compare it. I’ll compare xenogears with xenosaga since they are more related.

Xenogears was amazing. I enjoyed playing it more than I enjoyed FFVII.

I’m fighting to say that Xenogears is objectively better because I subjectively love it so much. Favourite RPG on PS1 bar none. On story I’d have to give it to Xenogears hands down. However, that whole second disc storytelling thing didn’t do it any favours for gameplay. At least in FFVII you could play and traverse the world the entire time on each disc.

But on everything else I’m giving it to Xenogears. Actually I kinda want to play it now…

Greatest rpg story and characters ever made!! Cool graphics, wonderful world, soundtrack and great battle-system.

Xenosaga was completely different feeling to play. didn�t like it so much, but was ok.

I love FF7 but Xenogears just has something extra to it. FF7 covers a lot of great things, gameplay, story, music etc, but Xenogears covers life itself.

Ever since I finished playing the third episode–I really wanted to play that Xenosaga: Pied Piper game (I believe that’s the one you’re talking about) that never came out in North America. The only thing I have is Pied Piper script, but it would be nice to actually see the characters…A 10 minute FMV is just as good, though.

Need I say what my opinion on Xenogears and FFVII is? Xenogears period.
