I’m sure most people who will be voting in here know the rules, but for those that don’t, here are the basics– this is a competition with a number of battles held in a series of rounds. A theme such as "quotes" or "music" is picked and then the choices are pitted against each other in one-on-one battles. Once a round ends, a new one begins until eventually there is a single winner. Anyone can vote at any time they like, but you’re only allowed one vote per battle. Keep in mind that this is not a normal discussion thread, so you are asked to generally only post if you are making a vote, though you are welcomed and encouraged to include your explanation for your choice when you make your vote. It also requested that you place your actual vote in boldface to make it easy to spot.
Updates are made about every 48 hours.
The first battle for the first edition was…
Battle 1 :
Steiner The Interrogator
Steiner: "I am not here to drink coffee! Tell me when the cargo ship will arrive, or else the Alexandrian royal family will appropriate this property!"
Morrid: "And then what?"
Steiner: "I order you to tell me when the cargo ship will arrive! Tell meeeee!!!"
Morrid: "You’re not a very creative interrogator."
VS
A Trick To Take Your Mind Off Things
Zidane: "You wanna know a trick to get your mind off things?"
Eiko: "Okay."
Zidane: "This is an age-old ritual between male friends!"
Eiko: "Uh-huh."
Zidane: "Come over here, Vivi. Let’s go together. Doesn’t it feel nice to let yourself go under the stars?"
Eiko: "……"

A Trick To Take Your Mind Off Things – 2
Battle 2 :
What do you say, Rusty?
Zidane: "Come on. You’re too old to be playing with a doll."
Steiner: "Silence! A scoundrel like you could never understand! I’m just overwhelmed with concern for the princess! If only you rogues hadn’t kidnapped her… This is all your fault! If anything should happen to the princess, I will have your head!"
Zidane: "Take it easy. Geez… I’m gonna go look for her now. I’ll let you come with me if you promise to be good. What do you say, Rusty?"
Steiner: "RR…RUSTY!!!? I am Adelbert Steiner, Captain of the Knights of Pluto, and I will never work with you conniving thieves!"
Zidane: "Captain? I figured you were a private, what with that cheap, rusty armor… Look, this has nothing to do with Tantalus. It’s something I decided to do on my own. I just wanna save Garnet."
VS
F..Frog Is Talking
Regent Cid: "We need at least one person to look after the ship when we reach our destination."
Blank: "I still owe you guys one, so I volunteer."
Quina: "F..Frog…"
Zidane: "…You don’t owe us anything."
Regent Cid: "Okay, anchors aweigh!"
Quina: "Is talking…"
Zidane: "Hey. Quina loves frogs, so you’d better watch out."
Quina: "Maybe I eat it…?"
Go!
It’s funnier and I would not like to see Steiner win two in a row.

What do you say, Rusty? – 4
Battle 3:
My Beautiful Shooting Star
Eiko: "You know why I’m here in this village? It was to meet you, Zidane, my beautiful shooting star…"
VS
Loud, Dirty And Rusty
Steiner: "If you weren’t such a filthy-looking oaf, they would not be so suspicious of us!"
Zidane: "Hey, I’m not the idiot with the loud voice, and the dirty, rusty armour."
Stiener: "WHAT!!!?"
Fight!
Loud, Dirty And Rusty – 12
My Beautiful Shooting Star – 2
Arcanine – Unfortunately, I have not played IX in quite some time. So I am not sure where every one of these quotes is directly from. The ones I do know, I’ll give a brief description. Also, the quotes I am using were ones nominated by the people who vote in this rumble. So I’m assuming most of them know where the quotes are from. If you want to know the origin of a particular quote, and I have not given a description, you could find a game script and look for it. Sorry if that’s a pain in the arse. But I can’t change the fact I have not played the game in a while.
Battle 4 :
Too Stupid To Use Magic
Kuja: "It really isn’t my kind of place. You see, there’s an anti-magic barrier around the place. And I want to send you because you’re too stupid to use magic."
VS
It’s What’s Inside That Counts
Zidane: To hell with looks, it’s what’s inside that counts!
The other quote is just not very interesting to me.
It’s What’s Inside That Counts – 0
OK, it seems a few people are not happy about how this is being run. This weekend I’ll scour a game script to get more context for the quotes. But you’ll have to take this battle as it is.
Battle 5:
You never needed him to begin with, Princess
Dagger: "You have to call me Dagger until we reach Treno. Don’t salute me, either."
Steiner: "Yes, until we reach Treno and find a way back to the castle, I will be careful."
Dagger: "Okay, let’s go."
Dagger: "Wow…! That cable car will take us to the summit. We’re almost there, Steiner. Alexandria is just beyond the summit, right? I managed it without Zidane’s help…!"
Steiner: "You never needed him to begin with, Princess."
Dagger: "……"
VS
Did you want to go with Eiko?
Freya: "Zidane! The heat is going to kill the engine if we get any closer!"
Zidane: "Okay… When we get closer to the volcano, you two head to the shrine’s entrance."
Amarant: "…Why do I have to go with her?"
Zidane: "Oh, sorry. Did you want to go with Eiko?"
Amarant: "……"
Did you want to go with Eiko? – 10
Xander, thanks. I thought about it again after reading what you said, and I figure I’ll try to find more context for the one liners. Quotes like the two below should be easy to understand and remember where they were from.
Also, guys, I am going to start updating every 3 days. This will give more people the chance to vote in more battles, and it’ll also give me more time to dig up some information on the necessary quotes.
Battle 6 :
Kuja! What are you plotting?
Kuja: "So…an eruption of anger against one’s surroundings induces a complete Trance! It’s not the will to live, nor is it the desire to protect another!"
Zidane: "Man, you’re really goin’ off! Hello!?"
Kuja: "That means…I simply need a powerful soul, even if that
soul is not my own! No, wait… And it can be found there! Hahahaha!!"
Zidane: "Kuja! What are you plotting?"
Kuja: "I am done with you!"
VS
The End of Ugly Desire
Kuja: "I’m not done telling how to make soulless toys out of the dregs of souls!"
Zidane: "Dregs of souls? You mean Mist!?"
Kuja: "First, you don’t want to listen, now you start asking questions? Oh, brother… But you’re not ready yet!"
Dagger: "Why, you– don’t you feel anything!? Taking the lives of so many…"
Kuja: "Spare me the lecture. Lives come and go all the time. What’s the big deal? Speaking of warmongers, why… what about that mother of yours, Princess? She said she won’t feel alive until she has everything! It breaks my heart to see such greed! The war was my fault? No, no! Your mother wanted it! All I did was give her a little push!"
Dagger: "Liar! My mother was sweet and kind. You changed her!"
Kuja: "Mwahaha… So the curtain rises! Perfect, my canary. Let me show you the truth about your mother! First Act: The End of Ugly Desire. It’s showtime!"
There is something about this fight that makes me think it’ll be thoroughly one sided. But we will see.
Fight!
It’ll be curious to see the outcome of this battle– as I’m pretty sure I know exactly what the "something" is that Flux is referring to– but we’ll see.
Kuja! What are you plotting? – 3
The End of Ugly Desire – 6
Battle 7
Kuja’s Girlie Face
Queen Brahne: "Kuja! So you finally decided to show your girlie face here!"
VS
It’s Tot!!
Baku: "So, this Tootsie’s gonna give us Supersoft?"
Marcus: "It’s Tot."
Baku: "ACHOO!!! Whatever. I can’t believe Tantalus is at the mercy of some old man. Hmph. I guess we gotta keep babysittin’ the princess."
Marcus: "Still?"
Baku: "He ain’t gonna give you the Supersoft unless you’re with the princess. That’s the deal, Princess. I’m askin’ you to take Marcus to this Toot."
Marcus: "…It’s Tot."
Dagger: "I was going to, anyway."
Baku: "Well, go get some rest before you go. I’m sure Ted needs time to prepare."
Marcus: "…It’s Tot."
And even if I did give more context, It’s Tot!! is still much funnier.
It’s Tot!!
Kuja’s Girlie Face – 1
Despite a late vote from stuorstew, It’s Tot picks up some thoroughly deserved support and gets through.
Battle 8:
Freya’s Love
Freya: "Sir Fratley, I… I have missed you so much. I began my search for you immediately after you left Burmecia. Where have you been all these years…? To what corners of the world have you travelled? My dear Fratley… I climbed the highest mountains only to hear rumours of your victories… I searched the deepest valleys only to find your footsteps. But I never found you. And in the end, I heard something… something unbearable!"
VS
Created For The Wrong Reason
Mikoto: "Kuja… what you did was wrong… But you gave us all one thing… hope… we were all created for the wrong reason, but you alone defied your fate. We do not want to forget this. We want your memory to live on forever… to remind us that we were not created for the wrong reason… that our life has meaning."
Two pretty great quotes. But which one will make it through?
Created For The Wrong Reason – 4
Battle 9:
Repulsive Bug
Steiner: Get that repulsive bug off the throne immediately, and call the regent!
VS
You’ve gotten..big
Zidane: … Oh yeah! You used to live next door to me. How’s it going… Ratchel? Man, you’ve really got… big."
Sorry about this piss poor update. I have had a busy week. Though I was thinking, quotes is not really very good for doing something different with. If it was enemies or characters, I could add pictures and such. I’ll try to make it better soon.
I’m going with Repulsive Bug
You’ve gotten big – 7
Battle 10 :
Man, I Hate Kids
Eiko: He called me a liar and a loudmouth and a brat!!!
Amarant:He’s right…
Eiko: What did you just say? D’you wanna repeat that?!
Amarant: Man, I hate kids…
VS
You’re one to talk!
Steiner: Red Rose!? Could it be… Beatrix?
Zidane: Quite a woman, you fell in love with!
Steiner: You’re one to talk!
Garnet: Wait a minute, Steiner! What did you mean by that!?
I was going to update. But I notice the votes have been sparse. I’ll assume it’s due to Christmas. I’ll update this at a later date. I’ve not forgotten about it. But I think it’s at a stage where a few more votes could bring about a more interesting result.
Man, I Hate Kids – 7
You’re one to talk – 4
And with that, we’re on standby for the time being. For those that don’t know, Flux’s computer got fried and so he really doesn’t have much, if any Internet access right now. He said that Zak may have had the quotes he was using, but apparently there’s a bit of a snag there. So for the time being, let’s just let it sit and hopefully Flux will be able to resolve the computer issues. Stay tuned…
Also, I’m posting from my PS3 browser. Which is…limited, to say the least. I won’t be on the net anywhere near as much as i have been in the last few months. So naturally, my visits to FFShrine will become sparce. I’m also in the process of changing my ISP due to my current one being, for want of a better word, shit! So I could be without internet for a while anyway.
I don’t have any idea when I’ll be in possesion of another PC/Laptop. But I don’t imagine it will be any time soon. And I wouldn’t be able to run a rumble from my PS3. I don’t have anything against somebody taking control of the rumble. Or i’ll just pick it up when I get back on my PC feet!
Obviously, it’s Agent’s call. I’ll go along with whatever he decides. Sorry for this by the way. I just seem to have had a run of bad luck in the past few months. I hope 2009 brings some good..
Sorry for this by the way. I just seem to have had a run of bad luck in the past few months. I hope 2009 brings some good..
No worries. It’s not your fault, it just happened.
sorry about your computers btw, that’s what america gets for being so consumptuous…American Dad – episode where model rocket contest results in instability of america kamikaze-ing all of japan and leaving russia to continue being boring cold communists.
THIS though…
You’re one to talk – I didn’t know Steiner was so approving of Zidane and Garnet before their quest was over..

Zidane: Ooo, soft…

Love/woe:
Cornelia- "Love is the sweetest joy… and the wildest woe."
I’ll try to keep the updates every two to three days depending on how concentrated the voting is…
Fight!
It is. Specifically during the scene at Madin Sari (spelling on first part please) when Garnet and Zidane are on the boat. Here’s the dialogue for that scene:
Dagger: Why did you come with me?
Zidane: Hey, that’s Ipsen’s line.
Dagger: Ipsen? Who’s that?
Zidane: Ipsen is a character from a play, but he’s a real-life
adventurer. I think the play is based on his adventures. It kinda goes
like this… Ipsen and his good friend Colin worked at a tavern in Treno.
One day, Ipsen got a letter. The letter was so wet from rain that most
of the writing was illegible. The only part he could read said "Come
back home." Nowadays, we have airships and stuff, but back then, it was
really hard to travel. He didn’t know why he had to go back, but he got
some time off, gathered his things, and set out on his journey home. He
walked a thousand leagues through the Mist. Sometimes he was attacked
by vicious monsters, but he made it, because his friend Colin was by
his side. And then, after much time on the road… He had to ask Colin
something. "Why did you come with me?"
Dagger: And? What was Colin’s answer?
Zidane: ‘Only because I wanted to go with you.’
Though technically I should put it as Colin, but since Zidane was relaying the story, I’ll just leave it at that…

-F..Frog Is Talking
-Steiner the Interrogator
Rebuttle, now!
That is, if you don’t mind. I don’t really want to sound pushy or anything, but it would be helpful.
I’ll do that next time, because there is the Eagle quote, which I don’t recall Zidane saying. I recall him saying "The sly eagle doesn’t kill at whim" to the Red-Haired Man right after you fight him, but not that exact quote, I’ll have to read the whole script if I have to in order to find it…
Zidane: "H-Help! He came out of that door as I was passing by! I was staring at him ’cause I thought he might be a burglar, then he started pummeling me!"
Guard: "But he’s a guard for this mansion…"
Zidane: "That’s why he’s suspicious! Just look at him!"
Guard 2: "W-We always had our suspicions, but…"
Zidane: "I’m gonna call the police! You guys hold him off until they get here! (I’ll tell you one thing… The truly mighty ones don’t flaunt their power. How can I describe it to you? The sly eagle hides its claws.)"
Amarant: "Hmph…"
Match-ups for Round 2:

-It’s Tot! vs. You’ve Gotten Big
Starting from the bottom of the list:
It’s Tot! vs. You’ve Gotten Big
It’s Tot!:
Baku: So, this Tootsie’s gonna give us Supersoft?
Marcus: It’s Tot.
Baku: ACHOO!!! Whatever. I can’t believe Tantalus is at the mercy of some old man. Hmph. I guess we gotta keep babysittin’ the princess.
Marcus: Still?
Baku: He ain’t gonna give you the Supersoft unless you’re with the princess. That’s the deal, Princess. I’m askin’ you to take Marcus to this Toot.
Marcus: …It’s Tot.
Dagger: I was going to, anyway.
Baku: Well, go get some rest before you go. I’m sure Ted needs time to prepare.
Marcus: …It’s Tot.
This dialogue takes place on disc 2 when the story focuses on Dagger and Steiner during their adventure back to Alexandria Castle. During their stop at Treno, they end up teaming up with Tantalus (specifically Baku and Marcus), since they are on their way to Evil Forest to free Blank from Petrification. To cure his Petrification, they must steal an Item called Super Soft from a the scholar’s tower in Treno. The scholar is Doctor Tot, who was Princess Garnet’s tutor at Alexandria; until around the time that Queen Brahne was no longer her normal self. So rather than have them perform an unnescesary crime of breaking and entering, Dagger insists they get it the honest way…
You’ve Gotten Big:
Zidane: … Oh yeah! You used to live next door to me. How’s it going… Ratchel? Man, you’ve really got… big.
This takes place during disc 1 shortly after the party’s arrival in Lindblum. Zidane goes someplace to find real food, finding the food at the castle, "too high-class for my tastes". Upon entering the pub in the Industrial District (name please), Zidane runs into a dragoon from Burmecia, and supposedly cannot remember their name. He pokes insult at her by thinking of a euphenism for calling her fat, at which point Freya almost staves his head in…
I think those descriptions are a little long winded, feedback with your vote would be appreciated…
Fight!
Both lines are funny! Makes me want to play FFIX again. I vote for It’s Tot! though.
Thanks, I’ll do that next time around…
it’s her. freya is not a he..you may redeem yourself if you can include her boyfriends name in your next post. :coolegg:
It’s Tot!
You’ve Gotten Big: 0
No love for Freya and Zidane andare eliminated…
Man, I Hate Kids vs. Did You Want to Go With Eiko?
Man, I Hate Kids:
Eiko: He called me a liar and a loudmouth and a brat!!!
Amarant:He’s right…
Eiko: What did you just say? D’you wanna repeat that?!
Amarant: Man, I hate kids…
When the party visits Alexandria Castle at the beginning of disc 3, Steiner is throwing Eiko out of the castle as they arrive…
Did You Want to Go With Eiko:
Freya: Zidane! The heat is going to kill the engine if we get any closer!
Zidane: Okay… When we get closer to the volcano, you two head to the shrine’s entrance.
Amarant: …Why do I have to go with her?
Zidane: Oh, sorry. Did you want to go with Eiko?
Amarant: ……
When Amarant complains about the person he teams up with for the Fire Shrine, Zidane presents him with his alternative member…
Fight!
Man, I Hate Kids: 3
Sorry for the delay folks…
The End of Ugly Desire vs. Freya’s Love
The End of Ugly Desire:
Kuja: I’m not done telling how to make soulless toys out of the dregs of souls!
Zidane: Dregs of souls? You mean Mist!?
Kuja: First, you don’t want to listen, now you start asking questions? Oh, brother… But you’re not ready yet!
Dagger: Why, you– don’t you feel anything!? Taking the lives of so many…
Kuja: Spare me the lecture. Lives come and go all the time. What’s the big deal? Speaking of warmongers, why… what about that mother of yours, Princess? She said she won’t feel alive until she has everything! It breaks my heart to see such greed! The war was my fault? No, no! Your mother wanted it! All I did was give her a little push!
Dagger: Liar! My mother was sweet and kind. You changed her!
Kuja: Mwahaha… So the curtain rises! Perfect, my canary. Let me show you the truth about your mother! First Act: The End of Ugly Desire. It’s showtime!
(Note: This quote, or a version of it, anyway, won the "Greatest Quotes" edition of the Gen FF Rumble.)
Takes place when the party confronts Kuja on the Iifa Tree before he decimates the Alexandrian Navy and the Mages…
Freya’s Love:
Freya: Sir Fratley, I… I have missed you so much. I began my search for you immediately after you left Burmecia. Where have you been all these years…? To what corners of the world have you travelled? My dear Fratley… I climbed the highest mountains only to hear rumours of your victories… I searched the deepest valleys only to find your footsteps. But I never found you. And in the end, I heard something… something unbearable!
Takes place in Cleyra during the attack when Sir Fratley saves them all and before Freya learns what has happened to Fratley in his adventures…
Fight!
Freya’s Love: 0
Next Round:
Steiner the Interrogator vs. Loud, Dirty, and Rusty
Steiner the Interrogator:
Steiner: I am not here to drink coffee! Tell me when the cargo ship will arrive, or else the Alexandrian royal family will appropriate this property!
Morrid: And then what?
Steiner: I order you to tell me when the cargo ship will arrive! Tell meeeee!!!
Morrid: You’re not a very creative interrogator.
Takes place in Dali when Steiner is still trying to find a way to get Garnet back to the castle of Alexandria.
Loud, Dirty, and Rusty:
Steiner: If you weren’t such a filthy-looking oaf, they would not be so suspicious of us!
Zidane: Hey, I’m not the idiot with the loud voice, and the dirty rusty, armour.
Steiner: WHAT!!!?
immediately after the party arrives at Lindblum Grand Castle and their suspicious of whether Garnet is really who she says she is.
Fight!
As classic is that one is, Steiner the Interrogator for me. It cracks me up.
BTW Hawkeye, you planning to continue this after quotes is over?
Steiner the Interrogator: 3
Too Stupid to Use Magic vs. F…Frog is Talking
Too Stupid to Use Magic
Kuja: It really isn’t my kind of place. You see, there’s an anti-magic barrier around the place. And I want to send you because you’re too stupid to use magic.
Kuja comments on Zidane’s ability as a mage before he sends him to Oeilvert
F…Frog is Talking:
Regent Cid: We need at least one person to look after the ship when we reach our destination.
Blank: Plus, I still owe you guys one, so I volunteered.
Quina: F-Frog…
Zidane: …You don’t owe us anything.
Regent Cid: Okay, anchors aweigh!
Quina: Is talking…
Zidane: Hey. Quina loves frogs, so you’d better watch out.
Quina: Maybe I eat it…?
Quina’s hunger pains hit on the deck of the Blue Narciss when the search of Kuja begins…
And Zak, to answer your question, I can stop moderating the rumble after quotes is done, or up through the end of May, since that is the last time I’ll be on regulary enough to update…if you want it after this round I have no objection…
Fight!
Coincidently I got to that point when I was playing today.
ps. its spelt oeilvert (u were close enough tho :))
F…Frog is Talking: 1
…pwnage
Personal Thought vs. Oblivious
Personal Thought:
Baku: Always talkin’ about yer duty. Ain’t you got no thoughts of yer own?
Baku challenges Steiners undeterring loyalty to Garnet and Alexandria when they break and enter into Tot’s tower…
Oblivious:
Garland: You are completely oblivious. Just like a newborn child. You don’t know why you were given life, or for what purpose you exist… You simply shout to emphasise your life… your own existence. You are completely oblivious.
Can’t really think of anything of how this relates to the storyline when it takes place…it takes place right after Garnet passes out in Terra after a flashback of the Eye in the Invincible destroying either Alexandria or Madin Sari…yeah I can’t think straight right now
Fight!
Oblivious: 2
Friendship vs. Bitch Please
Friendship:
Zidane: Why did you come with me? Only because I wanted to go with you.
After a side-story, Zidane tells Garnet why he went with her…
Bitch Please:
Blank: What are you talkin’ about!? My helmet totally reeks! My armour’s way too big… And my back’s real itchy… The boots are wet… My gloves are all slimy… There’s cookie crumbs in my pocket…
Blank finds his Knight’s of Pluto uniform less than comftorable…
Fight!
Hilarity > Soft-Heartedness
Friendship!
Friendship: 3
Last battle of Round 2
Soft vs. Courage
Soft:
Zidane: It’s taking off!
Dagger: Aaah!
Zidane: Ooo, soft…
Zidane cups a cheap feel when boarding the airship to "Lindblum"…
Courage:
Beatrix: I commend your courage, but I will show you no mercy.
Self explanatory, she gives Zidane kudos for challenging her in Burmecia…
Update:
I’m getting the Internets at my house soon, so I should be able to keep the rumble going, but if someone really wants it badly they can have it…
Fight!
What a waste of post space. Yes, you can. 1=1, A=A, which means you may as well not have posted. There’s still time to post again with an actual vote if you really want to make one.
Courage: 5
I’ll get the Quarter Finals started in the next couple days. Looks like four battles…
Questions/Comments?
We have:
-Too Stupid to Use Magic vs. End of Ugly Desire
-Loud, Dirty, and Rusty vs. Personal Thought

Too Stupid to Use Magic:
Kuja: It really isn’t my kind of place. You see, there’s an anti-magic barrier around the place. And I want to send you because you’re too stupid to use magic.
Too lazy to come up with new descriptions sooo…
Kuja comments on Zidanes ability as a mage before shipping him to Oelivert.
End of Ugly Desire:
Kuja: I’m not done telling how to make soulless toys out of the dregs of souls!
Zidane: "Dregs of souls? You mean Mist!?"
Kuja: First, you don’t want to listen, now you start asking questions? Oh, brother… But you’re not ready yet!

Loud, Dirty, and Rusty vs. Personal Thought
A banter takes place between Steiner and Zidane when they reach Lindblum on who is the bigger moron of the two.
Personal Thought:
Baku: Always talkin’ about yer duty. Ain’t you got no thoughts of yer own?
Baku bitches at Steiner for being a mindless tool of Alexandria…
Fight!

Courage vs. Bitch Please
Courage:
Beatrix: I commend your courage, but I will show you no mercy.
A diehard patriot of Burmecia challenges Beatrix before he realizes who she is…
Bitch Please:
Blank: What are you talkin’ about!? My helmet totally reeks! My armour’s way too big… And my back’s real itchy… The boots are wet… My gloves are all slimy… There’s cookie crumbs in my pocket…
Blank complains about the quality (or lack thereof) of the armour of the Knights of Pluto…
Fight!
Courage: 4
Last battle in this round:
Did You Want to go With Eiko vs. It’s Tot!
Did You Want to go With Eiko?:
Freya: Zidane! The heat is going to kill the engine if we get any closer!
Zidane: Okay… When we get closer to the volcano, you two head to the shrine’s entrance.
Amarant: …Why do I have to go with her?
Zidane: Oh, sorry. Did you want to go with Eiko?
Amarant: ……
Amarant gets an alternative partner choice for the Fire Shrine mission…
It’s Tot!:
Baku: So, this Tootsie’s gonna give us Supersoft?
Marcus: It’s Tot.
Baku: ACHOO!!! Whatever. I can’t believe Tantalus is at the mercy of some old man. Hmph. I guess we gotta keep babysittin’ the princess"
Baku never forgets a face…just the name that goes with it…
Fight!
It’s Tot! :5
Close finish…
I’ll get the semi-finals up later today…

sorry about the two week delay (or however long its been)…
Fight!
Bitch Please: 1
Ending this now since it seems weighted…
Bitch Please is out settling for Miss Congeniality…
Too Stupid to Use Magic vs. Loud, Dirty and Rusty
Too Stupid to Use Magic:
Kuja: It really isn’t my kind of place. You see, there’s an anti-magic barrier around the place. And I want to send you because you’re too stupid to use magic.
Anyone who doesn’t have the brains to be a mage have to be thieves I guess…
Loud, Dirty, and Rusty:
Steiner: If you weren’t such a filthy-looking oaf, they would not be so suspicious of us!
Zidane: Hey, I’m not the idiot with the loud voice, and the dirty rusty, armour.
Steiner: WHAT!!!?
Personally, I think that Zidane is better at insults than Steiner…
Sorry but I can’t think of any new descriptions for these…
Fight!
Loud, Dirty, and Rusty: 2

Here be the final match for the best quote in Final Fantasy IX:

Close match but…
That’s the end of this rumble…I don’t think I want to do the next one, so if someone wants it, speak now or hold your peace…
So any takers on what the next edition should be? I know what I want but I wanna hear your end first.
As far as I know we’ve done Characters, Locations, Quotes, and FMVs… as far as I know, IX hasn’t done… *cough*acertainthingthatthreeotherrumblesaredoingb utidon’tcare*cough*…
Seriously though IX is the only one that I don’t think has ever done it in the past. And one of them is about to end anyway.
I also dug up the old IX rumbles and didn’t see any music related thing.
Scenes is a little too similar to quotes… maybe later.
EDIT: Actually what the heck, post nominations. Anyone else who has a strong opposition to me using music for this can still speak up. I’ll leave nominations/objections open for two days.
BTW, a note about nominations. While I DO plan on linking to BlueLaguna as I usually do for audio samples, I recommend NOT using that as the template for nominations, because a random handful of tracks are missing from the IX section, and if any of those are included I’ll link somewhere else.

Anyway, guess I’ll post my nomination list (minus what Agent already said)
Also I’d prefer to avoid the ones from the "Plus". And, while it’s still possible, it’s very unlikely that I will use BOTH "Tantalus" and "Thieves", but maybe. I know the difference, but they may be a little too much alike. We’ll see.
Here’s my list of what’s left from what I would have said:
Vivi’s Theme
The Jesters of the Moons
Search For the Princess
Steiner’s Theme
Queen of the Abyss

Final Battle
If no one else has anything left to nominate, I counted 68 tracks… I think I’m gonna eliminate four of them, including that Bonus track… sorry. It’s just if I include it I feel like I’d be inclined to add more of those, which would make a tougher choice.
Qu’s Marsh
A Face Unforgotten
Iifa Tree
Crystal World
At the South Gate Border
Battle 2
Crossing Those Hills
Kuja’s Theme
The Place I’ll Return to Someday
We Are Thieves!

Those are actually ALL repeats of previous nominations… with the exception of Qu’s Marsh and Crystal World.
So now I’ve gotta 5 to eliminate… but thanks for helping narrow down based on things that weren’t bolded.
Anyone else?
Those are actually ALL repeats of previous nominations… with the exception of Qu’s Marsh and Crystal World. So now I’ve gotta 5 to eliminate… but thanks for helping narrow down based on things that weren’t bolded.
Well, that’s a backhanded way of saying, "Thank you." I’m not too fond of being criticized for volunteering my opinion after it’s been asked for. Also, you’re incorrect. "Iifa Tree" wasn’t previously mentioned either, unless it has an alternate title I’m unaware of. Wouldn’t a little gratefulness and humility do more to keep this a fun experience?
Maybe it came off like that because of having to go through to find that what hasn’t been said yet, but that’s my fault, I didn’t say anything about making it easy for me to count. Glad you posted though, repeating ones are always welcome because, as I said, it gives a stronger case for what to include.
Guess that means I should say this: All future nominators, welcome to post anything, repeated or not, but if you can, highlight or star or somehow mark what hasn’t been said. Also if you want to mark particular ones you feel strongly about, that’s welcome as well, but marked a different way than you marked the new ones.
Also, I’ve decided I’m gonna use exactly 64. I always feel guilty about not including certain ones, but like I said, all those markings I mentioned above can help me decide fairly, as well as repeating nominations. The only reason I didn’t bother repeating the ones Agent said that I liked, is because I’m the one deciding so I can keep my list of what would have been my "repeated nominations" in my head.
The ones going will be:
Ipsen’s Heritage
The Four Medallions
Queen of the Abyss
Successive Battles
Qu’s Marsh
Everything else that’s been said, I will use… starting later today.
Sorry if anyone has any issues with what I took out… I’m trying to be as fair as I can.
Round 1 – Battle 1
Cleyra Settlement – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/55%20-%20Cleyra%20Settlement.mp3)
The theme of the unrevisitable hidden town of Cleyra. A very unique theme in the sense that it’s entirely with a pipe organ. Too bad you can only go there once…
VS.
Mystery Sword – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/48%20-%20Mystery%20Sword.mp3)
Or "The Sword of Doubt". The theme for all the rigged, unwinnable battles with Beatrix, which is pretty much a creepy and ominous version of her main theme…. one of which is IN Cleyra. Hmm.
Hard choice… going with Cleyra Settlement. It’s overlooked.
Mystery Sword 4-3 Cleyra Settlement
Well, Cleyra’s theme was more popular than I thought, but ultimately and naturally a Beatrix related battle theme comes out on top.
Round 1 – Battle 2
The Jesters of the Moon – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/09%20-%20The%20Jesters%20of%20the%20Moons.mp3)
The theme of Zorn and Yoda… I mean Thorn, played in various scenes with them. Definitely popular among fans, I’m surprised it didn’t make it to the FFIX Piano Collection album.
VS.
Search For the Princess – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/08%20-%20Search%20for%20the%20Princess.mp3)
Harpsichord at work, and a second part too… quite a long loop for this one. This is the theme during the second half of the play after the sword fight when they realize Dagger is missing. You also hear it if you enter the Throne Room in Alexandria Castle… at least as Steiner.
I like the search after listening to it again, but Jesters of the Moon has always been a favorite so it gets my vote. When I first played the game that’s the track that made me think FFIX would have a solid OST, and it’s pretty early on!
I agree with others that it’s difficult choice
The Jesters Of The Moon
The Jesters of the Moon 7-3 Search For the Princess
Zorn and Thorn’s theme is just that awesome, winning this round. Good battle, Search For the Princess did put up the fight it deserved.
Round 1 – Battle 3
Black Mage Village – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/63%20-%20Black%20Mage%20Village.mp3)
I wonder where this is played. Anyway, this sounds a lot like a more upbeat and orchestrated version of Vivi’s Theme. Black Mage Village… home of Bobby Corwin.
VS.
Cid’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/33%20-%20Cid%27s%20Theme.mp3)
I’m sure a lot of the games have a track with this title. But they had a lot of fun with this game’s Cid. This plays in the Lindblum Castle section of Lindblum.
My vote’s easily for Black Mage Village.
Out of curiosity, (who or) what is the significance of Bobby Corwin?
Out of curiosity, (who or) what is the significance of Bobby Corwin?
Bobby Corwen –> Bo Co –> Boco — one of the spellings of the name of Bartz/Butz’s chocobo in Final Fantasy V.
Black Mage Village 10-4 Cid’s Theme
Cid’s Theme puts up a fight, but Black Mage Village crushes. Also appreciating all this activity! Hah, sorry, it’s just been a while since I’ve ran something that got more than a total of 7 votes per round, this is great. 🙂
Round 1 – Battle 4
Boundary South Gate – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/43%20-%20Boundary%20South%20Gate.mp3)
The very flute-induced theme of the South Gate, during the scenes when Steiner is escorting Garnet in a bag. One of those themes like the map that’s loosely based on Melodies of Life, just a flute version of it which happens to fit South Gate.
VS.
The Airship, Hilda Garde III – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/85%20-%20The%20Airship,%20Hildagaldy.mp3)
FFIX’s Airship theme, after Cid is finally restored. A good addition to the montage of Airship themes from past titles.
I’m gonna have to go with The Airship, Hilda Garde III. It’s quite good.
but seriously, when it goes to FFIX OST i have a tough dilemma in every fight 😀
Very close battle, but as usual, the Airship theme takes a narrow victory from the South Gate-crashers.
Round 1 – Battle 5
The Skies of Alexandria – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/04%20-%20Sky%20Above%20Alexandria.mp3)
This short dramatic theme is played during the FMV when you see Alexandria for the very first time, after the Prima Vista sequence and right before you get to control Vivi.
VS.
The Place I’ll Return to Someday – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/01%20-%20The%20Place%20I%27ll%20Return%20To%20Someday.mp 3)
The beginning of the OST, the menu theme which we all know and love. Title refers to Terra, I believe.
I’m not all that into FMV-drama, my vote’s for The Place I’ll Return to Someday.
P.S.: Zak, did you mean to say that you’re not all that into FMV drama?
The Skies of Alexandria
"The Place I’ll Return to Someday" is great, but there are some variations that I want to vote for even more.
Yes. Whoops. XD
By the way, for those waiting for variations, you HAVE seen the list, right? And you have seen what five I ended up not including?
Classic core theme gets the advantage, as if the other one stood a chance.
Round 1 – Battle 6
Theme of the Tantalus – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/50%20-%20Tantalus%20Theme.mp3)
The main theme of Baku’s team of thieves, Tantalus. There are a few variations of it, which is funny that this is supposed to be the original one, because you don’t ever hear this specific one until late on Disc 3. As a matter of fact I just spent a week in the trivia game having people figure out the four places it’s used. XD
In a couple ATE scenes involving the Tantalus rebuilding Lindblum, as well as in Alexandria before Dagger cuts her hair, and one other secret ATE that you probably didn’t know about unless you were really curious.
VS.
Passing Sorrow – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/94%20-%20Passing%20Sorrow.mp3)
A nice string theme, used near the start of Disc 4 when it shows what’s been going on in Black Mage Village since the Genome guys have settled there. It’s also used briefly early in the game during a scene where Eiko is contemplating stuff.
Not sure how popular this one is, but it’s beautiful and it’s on the Piano Collection! Also, one of a kind, not a variation of any other theme on the OST as far as I know!
For me… damn, I gave myself a difficult choice. I really like them both, but I think I’m gonna go for Theme of the Tantalus because I’m not really a fan of any of it’s other variations. It’s got that piano interlude at the end of the loop that it’s variations don’t have.
Too bad Tantalus had to go so early, but Passing Sorrow is a truly special theme and even though I didn’t vote for it I believe it deserved it just as well. Close battle anyway.
Next battle coming soon, I’m posting from a different computer than the one with all my matchup data because I contracted a horrible browser trojan there and am running a OneCare scan that’s been taking all day and am avoiding using the browser while it’s doing it. It’s still running, should be done and taken care of tomorrow when I’ll update.
Round 1 – Battle 7
The Final Battle – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j17e1ExDDus) (Youtube link, song missing from BL)
The epic battle theme for the Final Battle with Necron. Yes I also always wondered why you steal a Mythril Sword from him. It’s one of those battle themes that has a creepy slow intro and then randomly dives into something upbeat, like FFVIII’s The Extreme. Necron was so odd… he’s never mentioned once in the game until the end, and all of the sudden he’s the main nemesis out of the blue, it was funny how he was anticlimactically introduced. XD
VS.
Freya’s Theme – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJCMGRCB9iU) (again, song oddly missing from BL. O_O)
You might think nothing stands a chance against the final battle theme, but think again, the slightest bit of melody might create competition. And here we have a character theme. Or you might as well call it a location theme, as it’s only played in Gizamaluke’s Grotto.
I like Freya’s Theme but my vote’s for The Final Battle. It’s great (though not as epic as The Extreme) and Freya’s theme gives me nightmares of how frustrating that Grotto was. Yes, that place I remember being stuck at the first time, irritated the hell out of me. Plus, as this was used previously as a voting merit, some better variations to look forward to.
The most I enjoy about The Final Battle is the beginning. And even though I absolutely hated Gizamaluke’s Grotto, I still find her theme to be highly enjoyable. . .
I think I want to go play FFIX all over again now.
Those screams at the beginning are lovely 😉
So… The Final Battle is out early, while Freya’s theme is the first of our character theme’s to advance.
Round 1 – Battle 8
Slew of Love Letters – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/73%20-%20Slew%20of%20Love%20Letters.mp3)
Pretty interesting theme, fitting for a funny scene. Takes place on Alexandria port during the night when Eiko’s letter gets dropped and found by different people in a rather amusing scene.
VS.
Moogle’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/75%20-%20Moogle%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Ah, the Moogle theme. It’s been used in a few previous titles, and FFIX, being the game to have references to past titles, has it’s own rendition of it, and it’s the first one of the Sony generation to use it. In the game, it’s played in the secret area known as Mognet Central. While you do spend a lot of the game using their services, it’s a while before you see where it all takes place, and meet Artemicion!
My vote now would have to be, Moogle’s Theme. This game’s especially, for that intro.
Very one-sided win here… I mus have a curse of voting for whatever loses, next time I’ll vote the opposite of what I think! Hah, nah Slew of Love Letters is a great track and deserved to progress further.
Round 1 – Battle 9
Hermit’s Library Daguerreo – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/86%20-%20Secret%20Library%20Daguerreo.mp3)
Theme for the secret library, which is not that hidden, but completely optional to visit. Beautiful simple monophonic tune, earned itself a Hamaguchi rendition in the piano collection.
VS.
Quina’s Theme – Listen (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/39%20-%20Quina%27s%20Theme.mp3)
"I do what I want, you have problem?" Another character theme for none other than Quina Quen. A rather odd fellow… his/her theme is used during the frog catching mini-game, as well as some other scenes involving… IT.
This would be an easy choice for me, Hermit’s Library, Daguerreo.
Very close battle! Much closer than I expected actually, but Quina’s Theme is the first character not to make it. Score one for Daguerreo.
Round 1 – Battle 10
Quadmist – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/74%20-%20Quad%20Mist.mp3)
Theme for Tetra Master! What an addictive card game this game had. Preferred Triple Triad, but whatever. Fitting music for it, I guess.
VS.
Captivating Eyes – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/12%20-%20Eye%20Catching.mp3)
A song used mostly in scenes involving Garnet, one being on the South Gate. Another variation of "Melodies of Life".
I think I’m gonna have to go with Quadmist here. Usually in these kinds of battles I pick the one-of-a-kind unless I have a strong lean the other way. Which I don’t.
To be honest, it’s the 1st battle in this rumble, that I don’t really care which one wins.
I’m giving a few hours for someone not voted yet to notice and break it, if it doesn’t happen I find someone myself.
This round goes to one of Garnet’s themes, Captivating Eyes. Oh well, didn’t see that coming at the beginning but it surprisingly made a comeback.
Round 1 – Battle 11
Steiner’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/10%20-%20Steiner%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Another character theme, for Steiner, who’s got some of the best development in this game seeing as most of us start out hating him and his stingy attitude. Very fitting theme for him, creepy and ominous with that horn at the beginning. Got a variation or two on this OST. Played in parts of the game involving him like when you first control him searching for Pluto Knights, and swinging around in that cage with Dagger and Marcus.
VS.
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/07%20-%20Vamo%27%20alla%20Flamenco.mp3)
One of the more classic themes, probably because it has such a distinct catchy tune. Both Shiro Hamaguchi (Piano Collections) AND the Black Mages had their own rendition of this song, both of which are great. Although it’s first played during that sword fight on stage (grr getting 100 impressed), it’s more associated with the ever-so-popular sidequest, Chocobo Hot N’ Cold. So… a mini-game theme, pretty much.
I like Steiner and his theme better than any variation of it, but gotta go with Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco. It’s a classic and one of a kind.
I gotta say, I honestly believe IX has one of the best OST’s.
Although I do like trumpet themes for bumbling knight characters, ala Tik Tok’s theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB5y8zDUvIY#t=02m20s) from Return to Oz.
I gotta say, I honestly believe IX has one of the best OST’s.
yup
Vamo ‘Alla’ Flamenco for me. Cuz its fun hearing it over and over during Chocobo Hot and Cold.
Character themes are strong, but it’s hard to beat a theme that was considered classic enough by other remix composers. Good battle though.
Round 1 – Battle 11
Hunter’s Chance – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgS0fSFGqmI) (Youtube link, song not on BL)
Another somewhat popular song, the Black Mages did a version of it as well. Initially used during Lindblum’s Festival of the Hunt event, but also later used as the music for the secret battle with Hades in Memoria.
VS.
Protecting My Devotion – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/76%20-%20Protecting%20My%20Devotion.mp3)
Another theme for a battle-filled run through a city. An upbeat variation of Beatrix’s themes, used when you’re running through Alexandria while it’s in chaos, fighting Mistodons, with Beatrix in your party.
I’d have to go with Hunter’s Chance. Loss of Me to that beat doesn’t do it for me.
Surprising slaughter there. While I did vote for HC somehow I predicted it to be more even, but I guess even Protecting My Devotion doesn’t stand a hunted’s chance!
Round 1 – Battle 13
I Want to Be Your Canary – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGCK2Bo5Eeg) (Youtube, nothing on BL)
This is the play that Vivi’s been wanting to see… well, you finally get to see a proper version of it with this waltz in the ending sequence. Also got a conclusion.
VS.
Battle 1 – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/18%20-%20Battle%20Theme.mp3)
Yes, the battle themes in this game had really creative names… Battle 1, Battle 2, Final Battle… yeah, anyway, this is Battle 1, the game’s normal battle theme. Make of it what you will.
I like IWTBYC, but I vote for Battle 1 as FFIX is one of the few games where I like the normal battle theme better than the boss battle theme.
Normal Battle crushes this time, not much love for the play. Oh well.
Round 1 – Battle 14
Fairy Battle – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/44%20-%20Fairy%20Battle.mp3)
Special alternate battle theme with the same beginning, used when you run into one of the Friendly Monsters, or the Ragtime Mouse. So far it’s winning over at Gen FF’s Battle theme rumble…
VS.
Unfathomed Reminiscence – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/64%20-%20Unfathomed%20Reminiscence.mp3)
Another somewhat popular relaxing theme that has been redone on other albums I think. Used in the game during some flashback sequences, but also the main default theme for Alexandria. Of course, Alexandria doesn’t exactly have a regular default theme until Disc 3, seeing as prior to then you’re always there for a special controlled event with a different theme, Disc 3’s the first time you can be there freely, and I think the first time you can go there as Zidane even.
Anyway, my vote is for Unfathomed Reminiscence.
OnT: It was hard, but i think ill vote on Unfathomed Reminiscence
Unfathomed Reminiscence (or "The Unsurpassed Memory" or whatever) emerges victorious. Fairy Battle may be out, but you can still vote for it over at Gen FF for the time being.
Round 1 – Battle 15
Crossing Those Hills – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/25%20-%20Crossing%20those%20hills.mp3)
Or "Crossing the Knoll". The map theme, which is another outstanding variation of Melodies of Life. We’ve already lost one, how will this do? Every time I listen to it I can just imagine the Moogle Flute noise about to go off. Heh.
VS.
You’re Not Alone! – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/93%20-%20You%27re%20Not%20Alone!.mp3)
Another rather popular beautiful theme which has been played with a lot, though I do believe it’s one of a kind as far as the game goes. Played when Zidane has a mental breakdown in Pandemonium but then remembers his friends have stuck with him. Or something like that.
Tough choice here, but like I said, the one-of-a-kind between the two is more likely to win me over. So, You’re Not Alone!
Besides the map theme numbed the brain after a while, as nice as it may be.
Another MoL variation down! But really, Not Alone is probably one of the few themes that was competition for the map, and it moves forward.
Round 1 – Battle 16
Ruins of Madain Sari – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/67-%20Ruins%20of%20Madain%20Sari.mp3)
Madain Sari… home of Eiko, the Eidolon Wall, and a bunch of Moogles. A nice blend of flutes and other wind stuff, plus another part later. Fitting for Madain Sari because Eiko uses flutes.
VS.
Assault of the White Dragons – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/96%20-%20Assault%20of%20the%20White%20Dragons.mp3)
Or "Skirmish of the Silver Dragons", call it what you will. Theme from the FMV of when you’re first entering Memoria. A pretty popular theme on the OST, which might have been overlooked at some point, but the Black Mages came out with their version of it in their latest album.
I don’t usually like FMV themes, but Assault of the White Dragons is an exception and gets my vote. But, I really wish they’d used it for a challenge battle and not just a long FMV, because it loops and all.
Figured I’d help out its self esteem.
Nice battle, but the more epic one wins as usual. And, this puts us halfway through the first round!
Round 1 – Battle 17
The Sneaky Frog and the Scoundrel – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ms6729LfOA) (Youtube)
Or "Turn Around and the Frog is There". This upbeat track is used for one of the mini-games, when you play as Cid as a frog, and you have to find the key and escape.
VS.
A Face Unforgotten – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/46%20-%20Forgotten%20Face.mp3)
A slowed down piano version of Freya’s theme, but this is more like Fratley’s theme, as it’s used in the scenes and flashbacks involving him.
Both are pretty good, I’m gonna say A Face Unforgotten.
Almost a blowout! 8-0 is the usual blowout, it was roughly saved from being one right at 7-0. AFU joins Freya’s theme in the second round.
Round 1 – Battle 18
Rose of May/Loss of Me – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/60%20-%20Loss%20of%20Me.mp3)
Also can be considered Beatrix’s Theme, as it’s played in scenes involving her and during your short time on the Red Rose. It’s a pretty popular track, made the piano collection for obvious reasons and has a few variations on the OST. No one’s ever been certain of the true title, seeing as R and L are identical in Japanese and it can be read as "Rose of May", hence the Red Rose, or "Loss of Me", Beatrix having a loyalty dispute. I hear the second one more often, though oddly I always found it more of a stretch.
VS.
Frontier Village Dali – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/27%20-%20Border%20Village~%20Dali.mp3)
Another track that made the Hamaguchi piano collection. One of the first city-places you visit, Dali. A lot of dark secrets in this quiet farm town… and it’s theme is also used in the watch tower.
I gotta go with Loss of Me.
Beatrix’s main piano theme wins this one, this time.
Round 1 – Battle 19
Iifa Tree – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/69%20-%20Iifa%20Tree.mp3)
Probably one of the creepiest themes for a location, by far. The "Sanctuary"… yeah, I’d say it’s fitting for a place called that. And that crazy descent thing at the end of each loop gets me every time.
VS.
Theme in the Sunset – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/28%20-%20Theme%20in%20the%20Sunset.mp3)
Or "Far Away In the Twilight" is another title I’ve heard for this one. This is one of those sad-sounding themes used during those saucy emotional scenes mostly with Dagger. Originally when they’re in Dali looking out at the sunset with Zidane, but it’s used later in scenes where Garnet has something she’s thinking about.
Theme in the Sunset is my vote.
Closer battle than I expected! Garnet’s alternative sunset theme ends up on top.
Round 1 – Battle 20
Garnet’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/52%20-%20Garnet%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Another character theme… a blend of flutes and other wind. You can also hear a slight "Melodies of Life" in the background eventually with bells. Oddly enough, for a character theme of such an important character, this is only really played once throughout the game, during the flashback with Dr. Tot. But that’s Garnet’s Theme for you.
VS.
Melodies of Life – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3k1qQ36LOM) (Youtube, English version)
One of this game’s main theme songs, the only one with lyrics. The "Eyes On Me" of this game, played during the end credits. Throughout the OST, a lot of variations of this song exist, including its opponent in this round, as well as some other ones we’ve seen already.
As for me, I don’t really see myself voting either very far, but Melodies of Life.
When I 1st heared it, I couldn’t get it out of my mind for months ( hidden hypnosis techniques? >_<)
Melodies of Life crushes. Also an interesting note, while we’ve had many things close to blowouts, it appears there will always be at least one outlier, preventing a blowout, because we haven’t had one yet here! Interesting variety.
Round 1 – Battle 21
Kuja’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/47%20-%20Kuja%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Kuja’s Theme… which surprisingly didn’t make the piano collection. Used a lot in scenes involving Kuja, but has a LOT of variations! Also, at some point it’s even used on the map when you’re doing an errand for Kuja.
VS.
Two Hearts Not Captured – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ-dfIl36sg) (Youtube)
A track from the ending sequence, during Garnet’s "Who wants to be my canary?" scene! Perfectly fitting… and this scene alludes to her "Dagger" alias change.
I gotta go with Kuja’s Theme. Easily.
I’m the outlier! Hurray!!
The main villain’s theme dominates this one.
Round 1 – Battle 22
Eiko’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/66%20-%20Eiko%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Yet another character theme, our friend Eiko. She’s rather interesting, her and Mog and the flute. Yeah… played in scenes involving her, like the Madain Sari dinner.
VS.
Prelude – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT0i_8xZX0o) (Youtube)
A classic FF theme, usually played on main screens and stuff, this is FFIX’s rendition of it. Except this time it’s only played on the end screen where you can play Blackjack and stuff.
I don’t really see myself voting for either past this round. Not to crazy about Eiko’s Theme, and there’s nothing stand-out worthy in this game’s Prelude, just sounds like the rest of them with a little better sound quality. But this time, it’s gonna be Prelude.
Eiko’s Theme cuz its cute.
Prelude’s out, Eiko wins, advancing another character theme to the next round.
Round 1 – Battle 23
Prima Vista Band – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px5DngW4898)
This special theme is only heard once, near the beginning of the game when Zidane and Garnet drop in on the performance. Quite a band that ship has!
VS.
Aloha De Chocobo – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/40%20-%20Aloha%20de%20Chocobo.mp3)
One of the two Chocobo themes in this game, the calm slow relaxing guitar one. It’s sure got it’s qualities to make it stand out within the Chocobo themes. This is the one played in Chocobo gardens, like the forest, lagoon, or air garden.
I like this Chocobo theme, but I’m not ready to vote against Prima Vista Band. Not yet.
Shelinda: A ship in the sky will sing the Hymn of the Fayth? So when they hear it, everyone should sing along, correct?
Tidus: If they do, we might be able to defeat Sin!
Shelinda: Truly?
Yuna: Yes!
Shelinda: That’s wonderful! You can count on me! I shall tell all of Spira!
And a victory for the first of the two Chocobo themes to make an appearance. Tough luck for PV!
Round 1 – Battle 24
Vivi’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/05%20-%20Vivi%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Another character theme, one of which has a number of variations on the OST. Any track having anything to do with black mages is a variation of this. So this is played only during your first visit to Alexandria when you’re in control of Vivi. Rather catchy.
VS.
Reckless Steiner – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/29%20-%20Steiner%27s%20Stealth.mp3)
Not exactly Steiner’s Theme, but it’s variation cousin. Played in scenes involving Steiner when he’s frustrated. Which makes sense, this is kind of a creepy-funny version of his theme. Which lost already, so how will this do? It did put up a fight though, it just had a strong opponent (Flamenco).
Damn… seriously. As much as I’d hate to see both Steiner themes go in the first round, I’d still rather not vote against Vivi’s Theme. Though I wouldn’t really be mad if it lost.
One more vote is needed from someone who hasn’t…
Vivi’s Theme
Also I finally got my name back. 🙂
Round 1 – Battle 25
Eternal Harvest – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/56%20-%20Eternal%20Harvest.mp3)
Another one of FFIX’s standout popular themes, which had a lot of playing with, including a nice fast piano version of it from Hamaguchi. You only hear this song once during the game, during the dance ceremony in Cleyra with the harp, and it doesn’t even loop, and it’s pretty well choreographed. But, for a rather short track, Eternal Harvest is pretty popular. Too bad Beatrix or whoever had to interrupt it. Also just recently noticed how the harp at the beginning fits with the guy playing the harp in the game.
VS.
Beyond That Door – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdENgE9Hcn4) (Youtube)
One of the long themes from the ending, including some of this game’s main songs. Played during the whole romantic scene with Zidane and Dagger. Starts with an exciting upbeat tune, and then gets more interesting at the climax.
I admit that while Beyond That Door is decent competition, there are few things I’d choose over Eternal Harvest. I’m not really a fan of saucy ending themes, prefer the catchy ones.
Edit: I was severely confused, I meant to say that I totally forgot that Eternal Harvest didn’t loop, I really thought it did. :’D
So… this round goes to Eternal Harvest, after struggling so hard. Wow, two tie breaks in a row here!
Round 1 – Battle 26
We Are Theives! – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/72%20-%20We%20Are%20Thieves!.mp3)
A very close variation of the Tantalus theme (which lost already to Passing Sorrow), except a tiny bit slower and in a different key, and a different end and a shorter loop. Played in some scenes involving Tantalus, and in Alexandria at some point during your second time there as Vivi which is the only time you can race Hippaul, which is what this track reminds me of.
VS.
Sleepless City Treno – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/49%20-%20The%20City%20that%20Never%20Sleeps%20-%20Treno.mp3)
Another one of this game’s great piano compositions that gracefully made the collection. Kind of a slow-ragtime theme for the nightlife city, Treno! The irony is that this sounds like a track that could put you right to sleep, rather than that of a city that never sleeps. Oh well, Treno is no New York.
My vote’s for Sleepless City Treno, easily. If it was against the main Tantalus theme then it might be different, and as much as it sucks to lose both Tantalus themes in the first round, still sticking with Treno.
Oh well, sucks for Tantalus to lose both it’s themes in the first round. But yay for Treno!
Round 1 – Battle 27
Ukulele De Chocobo – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/41%20-%20Ukele%20le%20Chocobo.mp3)
This game’s OTHER Chocobo theme, the faster one used for when you’re riding around on it. Aloha already won, how will this do?
VS.
Zidane’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/31%20-%20Zidane%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Another "character theme" and although this is Zidane’s, you only get to hear it once in the game, when you’re all boarding the Cargo Ship after Dali. This a pretty packed theme, a hell of a long loop, I’d say worth listening all the way through if you don’t remember it (which I didn’t, I had to give it a listen). The loop is so long that the OST’s version of it only goes through it once!
I didn’t think I was going to, but after giving Zidane’s Theme a listen, it gets my vote any day over this Chocobo stuff.
I like the Hawaiian feel of it.
So, Chocobo themes can’t win ’em all, at least Aloha is still in the next round. Hooray for Zidane’s Theme, yet another character to advance.
Round 1 – Battle 28
Immoral Melody – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/51%20-%20Immoral%20Rhythm.mp3)
Another one of Kuja’s themes, played in scenes involving him, kind of an "evil" variation of his main theme. Very distantly, though, but you know how dramatic a pipe organ and that drum beat can make things sound. This is usually used when Kuja’s shown plotting something evil…
VS.
Gargan Roo – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/53%20-%20Gargant%20Roo.mp3)
FF9 has a lot of piano themes… here’s yet another one, with a pretty sick beat. This is the theme used in… well, Gargan Roo, and certain parts of Fossil Roo as well! Something as freaky as the gargant would get a weird theme like this.
Damn, this is hard… I wouldn’t really care which one won, they’re both cool, but for the sake of going by the one-of-a-kind lean rule, I’ll throw one in for Gargan Roo.
Once again, Kuja and his theme dominate.
Round 1 – Battle 29
Lindblum – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/35%20-%20Lindblum.mp3)
One of the main big cities in this game, I believe it won the Locations edition of this rumble. Now let’s take a look at the unusual theme of this place. It’s interesting, with that steady drum beat. I’d say the end of the loop is more fitting.
VS.
Amarant’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/70%20-%20Salamander%27s%20Theme.mp3)
The last of the character themes to show up here. Amarant’s got a nice little waltzy theme used in scenes involving him. Will he join the characters that made it to Round 2?
I’m going with Lindblum, Amarant’s Theme doesn’t do it for me at all.
Looks like Amarant is gonna get shafted in the character theme department. But really, Lindblum was location champion, whether or not it’s music was a factor, it would hardly be expected not to make it past the first round.
Round 1 – Battle 30
RUN! – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/23%20-%20RUN!.mp3)
FFIX’s "Hurry!" chase which is exceptionally good, but unfortunately not used as often as the chase themes are in other games. Used initially when you’re running out of the forest before Blank gets petrified, as well as when you’re escaping the castle on the time limit and maybe one or two more times.
VS.
Crystal World – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/98%20-%20Crystal%20World.mp3)
The theme of the "Crystal World" area past Memoria leading up to Trance Kuja. Sounds like a weird remix of the Prelude, with a lot of weird stuff going on in the background. Make of it what you will…
My vote is easily for RUN!
Also this round is seemingly almost over…
This is really easy…
Crystal World 7-6 RUN!
Incredible… really fun battle this was, RUN looked like it was gonna win by a blowout, people thought they were alone on Crystal World… but it climbed up there and won! Definitely the most unexpected result so far this Rumble! Shame to see RUN go though…
Okay, really close to the end now.
Round 1 – Battle 31
Battle 2 – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/21%20-%20Boss%20Battle%20Theme.mp3)
FFIX’s weird boss battle theme. The normal battle theme already won, how will this do? This is one unusual boss theme, sounds kinda creepy at some parts compared to those boss themes in the other games.
VS.
Song of Memory – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/36%20-%20Song%20of%20Memory.mp3)
Known as Garnet’s song. It’s special as it has the voice emulation to make it looks like Garnet is singing, as she is supposed to be every time this is played. This is also one of the game’s key-songs with a few variations (I think, not sure), but seeing as this is almost over I don’t believe any of them are included here, if they exist.
I vote Battle 2. Although this is one of the few games where I like the normal battle theme better than that of boss battles, I’m not a fan of Garnet’s song at all…
Song of memory is gay
Song of memory is gay
Maybe it’s just me, but this theme reminds me FFV Boss Theme a lot
Wow, a lot of votes! So, the boss battle theme makes it to round 2 as well, with a slaughter. Poor Song of Memory doesn’t even have 1/4 of the votes, but to be honest that’s surprising.
And now, this long-winded first round which started in August, is about to come to a close, with this battle!
Round 1 – Battle 32
Feel My Blade – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/06%20-%20Feel%20My%20Blade.mp3)
Also known as "Living By the Blade" or something along those lines. A semi-battle track, as in, it’s used in the first scene you see from the play when you sneak in, the intro during the lead-in scene, which later becomes a fake SFX battle with the Tantalus guys, with fitting music to go with it.
VS.
Ambush Attack – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/59%20-%20Ambush%20Attack!.mp3)
Oh boy, this track is heard a LOT in the game, during a lot of "intense situation" moments, usually involving the queen attacking all out. I think the first time you hear it is while escaping from Cleyra.
I have a feeling this is gonna lose, but voting for Ambush Attack.
Its tough but Ambush Attack.
Extremely close battle, I was about to call a tie break but it was early in the morning so figured I’d wait. Both on par, but Ambush Attack just made it a little better, and is the last to join Round 2!
Well that was fun… going to start Round 2 shortly!
Round 2 – Battle 1
Kuja’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/47%20-%20Kuja%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Kuja’s Theme… quite a popular theme to start with, as it slaughtered one of the ending themes in the last round. It’s a really beautiful piano waltz to say the least, one of my favorite villain themes.
VS.
Immoral Melody – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/51%20-%20Immoral%20Rhythm.mp3)
Kuja’s Theme is up against Kuja’s OTHER theme! Aside from the creepy organs at the start, this is pretty much a variation of Kuja’s melody! Also used in scenes involving Kuja doing or plotting something evil. This should really be an interesting battle. Beat Gargan Roo last round.
Yeah, I vote for… Kuja’s Theme.
Easily better for me.
Close battle, but if there’s anything that has a chance at beating Kuja’s Theme, it’s a variation of it. Score one for Immoral Melody.
Round 2 – Battle 2
Eternal Harvest – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/56%20-%20Eternal%20Harvest.mp3)
The famous Cleyra dance… it’s absolutely catchy, and fits the scene in sync with the harp intro. Too bad it doesn’t loop… but that’s one of it’s unique properties. It also has an amazing arrangement on the Piano Collections album. It beat one of the ending themes in the last round too…
VS.
Hunter’s Chance – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgS0fSFGqmI) (Youtube)
Another one of this game’s popular themes, which has a rendition of it by the Black Mages. Used during the Festival of the Hunt in Lindblum, and during the secret battle with Hades in Memoria. In the last round it beat another theme that involves running around a city encountering mosters, "Protecting My Devotion".
Definitely Eternal Harvest for me on this one though I have a feeling the other will be popular.
Good close battle… to think Eternal Harvest looked like it was gonna win, just when Hunter’s Chance took the chance to sneak in and make a comeback with just enough to take this round!
Round 2 – Battle 3
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/07%20-%20Vamo%27%20alla%20Flamenco.mp3)
One of this games most catchy and popular tunes, making both the Piano Collections and one of the Black Mages albums… not many tracks in Uematsu history hold that. Yeah… stage sword fight thing, Chocobo Hot & Cold game, beat Steiner’s Theme last round.
VS.
The Jesters of the Moon – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/09%20-%20The%20Jesters%20of%20the%20Moons.mp3)
Zorn & Thorn’s jazzy theme, a favorite among many fans, but surprisingly didn’t make the Piano Collection. But what it did make is this round, and now it’s up to it to make the next one. Beat the Search of the Princess theme in the last round in a close match…
Tough call, but I’m gonna have to go with The Jesters of the Moon.
I’ll throw one in for Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco.
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco 8-4 The Jesters of the Moon
A lot of votes make the battle surprisingly one-sided, who would have thought the Jesters would go so early. Well, Flamenco seems like it will be a dark-horse contender.
Round 2 – Battle 4
Unfathomed Reminiscence – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/64%20-%20Unfathomed%20Reminiscence.mp3)
Another one of this game’s popular themes… most of the second round has been consistent of them. The beautiful theme for Alexandria once you can finally be there freely, as well as a lot of flashback scenes. It also beat the Fairy Battle theme in the last round…
VS.
The Airship, Hilda Garde III – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/85%20-%20The%20Airship,%20Hildagaldy.mp3)
They did a great job with this game’s airship theme, the Hilda Garde III. I remember this winning in a close battle last round, against the theme of South Gate… well, to put this way, you know this theme is gonna be good as soon as you hear the beginning arpeggios.
Very hard for me here. Okay… Unfathomed Reminiscence.
Wasn’t expecting it to be this one-sided, but an absolute slaughter from the airship theme.
Round 2 – Battle 5
Aloha De Chocobo – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/40%20-%20Aloha%20de%20Chocobo.mp3)
Not sure what the deal is with this game’s Hawaiian references, but, here we have it, the one of the two Chocobo themes of this game, the one that was lucky to make it to this round (Ukulele didn’t). Against Prima Vista Band, so that’s kinda saying something. Played in the Chocobo garden areas.
VS.
Eiko’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/66%20-%20Eiko%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Eiko’s nice swing-y theme. It beat the Prelude in the last round, so it must be pretty popular… it is a character theme, after all. How will it do faced with a Chocobo theme?
I think this round I’m going for Aloha De Chocobo, easily.
Pretty good close battle… it was almost gonna be a slaughter but Eiko put up a good fight climbing up I was about to call a tiebreak, but the Chocobo took it.
Round 2 – Battle 6
Passing Sorrow – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/94%20-%20Passing%20Sorrow.mp3)
A great sad theme from the beginning of Disc 4 in Black Mage Village showing what happened after the Genome guys have settled there. It closely beat the main Tantalus Theme in the last round. Seems like it would be fun to play on guitar… how will it fare this round?
VS.
Assault of the White Dragons – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/96%20-%20Assault%20of%20the%20White%20Dragons.mp3)
Or "Skirmish of the Silver Dragons", call it what you wish. Such a contrast to it’s opponent, more of action-packed FMV theme, I’d say it’s this game’s version of FF8’s "Movin’" considering the intro and all and situation in which it’s used, blasting into Memoria. The Black Mages seemed to have liked this one though, enough to make their own version of it. It beat Madain Sari in the last round.
Tough choice for me this round, but it’s gonna be Assault of the White Dragons.
Again a really close battle, and when one started to catch up I was about to call a tie-break, but this time it’s over for Sorrow.
Round 2 – Battle 7
Melodies of Life – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3k1qQ36LOM) (Youtube)
Big song in this game that a lot of tracks are variations of or based on. Most recognizable is probably the map theme, since you hear it repeatedly. It beat Garnet’s theme in the last round, which is one in itself. It also has lyrics, so it’s like the "Eyes On Me" of this game, played during the end credits.
VS.
Freya’s Theme – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJCMGRCB9iU) (Youtube)
Probably a tougher opponent for MoL, the second character theme it has to face. After all, Freya’s beat the final battle, and that’s saying something. Freya’s sad ominous theme is played in the Gizamaluke’s Grotto. One of the three main character themes still standing, now that Eiko lost.
This time my vote will have to go to Freya’s Theme. I’m not sure I see myself going for MoL much anymore, tbh.
While I’m a fan of both, MoL was more memorable.
The scenes which led up, during, and following it.
Talk about a little powerhouse… Freya’s Theme beat both Melodies of Life AND the Final Battle… and it’s the first character theme to make it to round 3!
Round 2 – Battle 8
Vivi’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/05%20-%20Vivi%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Another one of the character themes left, and Vivi’s has a number of variations. Used in Alexandria at the start and that’s pretty much it. It beat one of Steiner’s variations in the last round…
VS.
Lindblum – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/35%20-%20Lindblum.mp3)
The theme of Lindblum, which also wiped out one of the 8 character themes in the last round. It’s very memorable so it has an advantage, how will it do this round? It also has a similar feel to Vivi’s Theme…
Hard choice for me, but I will be choosing Vivi’s Theme.
Lindblum on a coin flip.
Lindblum may have been the champion for the location rumble, but when it comes to music, this is as far as it looks like it’s gonna go… close battle though, yay for Vivi!
Also this puts us halfway through round 2!
Round 2 – Battle 9
Crystal World – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/98%20-%20Crystal%20World.mp3)
A weird version of the prelude playing in the last place in Memoria before the point of no return. It beat the chase theme in the last round… it certainly picks up after a bit.
VS.
Captivating Eyes – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/12%20-%20Eye%20Catching.mp3)
One of Garnet’s Themes, played in some scenes involving her, which is also another variation of Melodies of Life. That just lost, so how will this hold up? This beat the card game theme last round…
I don’t really care for either. Didn’t vote for either in the last round but I guess this time it’ll be Crystal World.
Crystal World wins again, and yet another MoL variation is out.
Round 2 – Battle 10
Zidane’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/31%20-%20Zidane%27s%20Theme.mp3)
Zidane’s Theme… the leader of them. So far two character themes made it to round 3, will this be the third? It really does have it’s appeal… it beat one of the Chocobo themes in the last round. Also a hell of a long loop. There’s a bit of "Unfathomed Reminiscence" at the end…
VS.
Secret Library Daguerreo – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/86%20-%20Secret%20Library%20Daguerreo.mp3)
Another one of the piano/guitar mono tone themes, which is fairly relaxing, and good for the place that it’s in. It beat Quina’s Theme, will it beat another character?
For me, Zidane’s Theme easily. I like Daguerreo though.
So, 3 out of 4 of the remaining character themes make it to round 3. Yay for Zidane, our hero! Guess this is it for Daguerreo…
A lot of you will probably hate the next battle but…
Round 2 – Battle 11
You’re Not Alone – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/93%20-%20You%27re%20Not%20Alone!.mp3)
One of this game’s popular themes, and despite being "not alone", it is a stand-alone, meaning it’s special and doesn’t have any variations as far as I’m concerned, probably why it beat the map theme last round. Played during Zidane’s mental breakdown after he finds himself again, in Pandemonium.
VS.
A Face Unforgotten – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/46%20-%20Forgotten%20Face.mp3)
Fratley’s theme which is a more soothing version of Freya’s Theme, on piano and slower. It seems to be slightly more popular, Freya’s theme already made it to Round 3, so how will this thing do? It sure seems to have a following… It beat Cid’s frog game theme last round…
Hrm… very tough for me… You’re Not Alone. Not sure I’m ready to see it go.
So, a little more competition for You’re Not Alone, but it’s still going strong. Guess it’s over for Fratley… his theme had quite a following.
Round 2 – Battle 12
Battle 1 – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/18%20-%20Battle%20Theme.mp3)
FFIX’s normal battle theme… it beat one of the ending themes in the last round. For a normal battle theme, this one is listenable a lot longer before getting tired of it.
VS.
The Place I’ll Return to Someday – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/01%20-%20The%20Place%20I%27ll%20Return%20To%20Someday.mp 3)
The main menu theme, which is also pretty popular. It’s on the piano collection, and throughout the game has a lot of other tracks which are variations of it. It beat the Alexandria FMV theme in the last round…
I know what my vote will be easily. Battle 1, this is one game where I like the normal battle theme a lot better than that of the bosses. Also it’s opponent doesn’t take very long to drive me crazy.
The normal battle theme wasn’t so lucky this time, talk about a slaughter! Guess this isn’t the FFX rumble. Another one for one of this game’s main themes. At least Battle 1 is doing pretty well over in General so far, I guess not here though…
Round 2 – Battle 13
Ambush Attack – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/59%20-%20Ambush%20Attack!.mp3)
The last theme to make it past the first round, up against the staged "Blade" battle theme. This is probably this game’s main "intense situation" chase theme. After a while you get used to it in this game.
VS.
Battle 2 – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/21%20-%20Boss%20Battle%20Theme.mp3)
So the normal battle theme just lost this round, here’s the boss battle theme. It slaughtered the Song of Memory in the last round, does it have much competition this round?
Battle 2 for me, again.
and isn’t it still round 1? you wrote "Round 2 – Battle 13". just wondering
They’re a bit similar in a way though.
My vote is for Battle 2.
Unlike the last battle, the battle theme is lucky this time! Seems the other way around over in the General Rumble, well anyway, yay for Battle 2!
Round 2 – Battle 14
Slew of Love Letters – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/73%20-%20Slew%20of%20Love%20Letters.mp3)
Theme of one of the most memorable scenes in this game. Kind of a comical-sounding theme. It beat that of the Moogles in the last round.
VS.
Theme In the Sunset – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/28%20-%20Theme%20in%20the%20Sunset.mp3)
Alternatively, "Far Away In the Twilight". Another theme for scenes involving Garnet, except it’s not a variation of her theme or MoL. It’s last win was against the theme of the Iifa Tree. Kind of reminds of FFVII’s "Anxious Heart"…
Hmm, between these two I choose Slew of Love Letters.
Slew of Love Letters. Great music for a great scene.
Again, the theme from the memorable love letter scene wins.
Round 2 – Battle 15
Sleepless City Treno – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/49%20-%20The%20City%20that%20Never%20Sleeps%20-%20Treno.mp3)
The night-life city of Treno. For a "sleepless city", it’s piano theme that fits with it, ironically feels like it could put you to sleep, in a good way. It beat one of the Tantalus themes in the last round.
VS.
Loss of Me – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/60%20-%20Loss%20of%20Me.mp3)
Or "Rose of May". Another piano theme. FF9 has a lot of those… and this is another memorable one. This being the theme of Beatrix, which has also got a bunch of variations that share the core waltzy tune. It won against Dali in the last round.
Very hard choice… in this piano battle I’d have to go with Sleepless City Treno. By a hair’s breadth.
Feeling unpredictable today
Good battle, but Loss of Me ends up overtaking, marking this the end for Treno. Oh well, I guess while one has the advantage of being one of a kind and having a longer loop, the other is heard less and you’re less likely to be sick of.
Time to end the second round now!
Round 2 – Battle 16
Mystery Sword – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/48%20-%20Mystery%20Sword.mp3)
A dark variation of Loss of Me, Beatrix’s theme, which just won the penultimate battle of the second round. Played during the unwinnable battles with Beatrix. It was also ironically the first winner in the first round (against Cleyra), and now it’s in the concluding battle of this round. Win again? Time will tell.
VS.
Black Mage Village – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/63%20-%20Black%20Mage%20Village.mp3)
Another one of this game’s often-visited places, and a variation of Vivi’s Theme, which, I believe, is still in! Most things to do with Black Mages are variations of that, anyway. As I said before, home of Bobby Corwen! Won against Cid’s Theme last round.
With this… Black Mage Village. Easily.
Easy win there for Beatrix again… and her creepy Save the Queen sword. Weird, for some reason I predicted Black Mage Village would be more popular, but it looks like it had it’s day.
So… the second round now over, the third consisting of 16 songs in 8 battles will commence later today.
Anyway, looks like you might wanna be preparing for some even harder choices coming up. Here we go with the next round!
Round 3 – Battle 1
Battle 2 – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/21%20-%20Boss%20Battle%20Theme.mp3)
This game’s boss battle theme… doing well so far in the top 16. I personally wish the normal battle theme was up here more! But oh well, best of luck!
VS.
The Place I’ll Return to Someday – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/01%20-%20The%20Place%20I%27ll%20Return%20To%20Someday.mp 3)
Once again, this game’s one of few main core themes. Again it’s got the luck of being placed against one of the battle themes. Well, it just wiped out the normal one I was ironically talking about above, how will it do this time?
As for my vote… well, just gonna say this battle does a great job rubbing in my disappointment of Battle 1 losing, hah, don’t particularly feel as strongly about either of these. If B2 loses I’ll hate the Place even more, but if the Place loses I’ll hate the Battle 2 could beat it but Battle 1 couldn’t! But between them I’m gonna say Battle 2. I like it less than the normal battle yes, but The Place is overrated.
The Place I’ll Return to Someday
So, the Place single handedly slaughtered both battle themes… looks like it’s gonna be a powerhouse! Welcome to the top 8, you got the honor of being the first one in that!
Round 3 – Battle 2
Hunter’s Chance – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgS0fSFGqmI)
Another one of this game’s popular themes, which definitely was expected to make it this far. If the Black Mages or Shiro Hamaguchi like you, then you’ve got a leg. I associate this more with Hades than that silly "Festival of the Hunt".
VS.
Crystal World – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/98%20-%20Crystal%20World.mp3)
A slightly less stand-out, but still beautiful, theme. It’s proven to get a lot of attention with the appearance it made in the last rounds. Kind of a more creepy version of the Prelude, the very last area in the game…
I haven’t really been voting for either, but this time my vote will go to Hunter’s Chance easily.
So this looks like it’s it for Crystal World. Hunter was always destined to make it far, and now it’s in the top 8. Hunter’s Chance still has a chance…
The next battle should be interesting.
Round 3 – Battle 3
Loss Of Me – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/60%20-%20Loss%20of%20Me.mp3)
Call it whatever you want… this is the name I’m sticking with, even though it may make less sense than "Rose of May". So, Beatrix’s key theme… a very fun beautiful catchy piano song, no surprise it made it to top 16. Top 8, perhaps?
VS.
The Airship, Hilda Garde III – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/85%20-%20The%20Airship,%20Hildagaldy.mp3)
This game’s airship theme. They did a great job with it in this one compared to other games, definitely. It’s proven to be a powerful entity… so, an airship vs. another airship (well, the Red Rose). This battle should be interesting as they’ve both been powerhouses.
Damn, this is tough… The Airship, Hilda Garde III gets my vote because it’s less looked at and it’s more my taste.
never been a fan of the other
One of my favorites from this game. n__n
Rose of May
as for airship themes, i found VI’s to be the best
I guess this battle marks the Loss of Loss of Me. Can’t say I saw that coming considering how popular it is, but if there’s any theme that could beat it, I guess it would be the airship. Yay for an underlooked theme beating one of this game’s main core themes.
Round 3 – Battle 4
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/07%20-%20Vamo%27%20alla%20Flamenco.mp3)
Another one of this game’s big hits, and it’s also a stand-alone! It’s catchy and no surprise it’s in the top 16, but should it make the top 8?
VS.
Freya’s Theme – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJCMGRCB9iU) (Youtube)
One of the three character themes to make it to the top 16… it’s beat some pretty tough opponents, and again she’s got one! Well, it’s kind of a surprise she made it further than her cousin "A Face Unforgotten", but that one had a tough opponent too.
I haven’t been voting for it I don’t think, but Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco for me this time.
Wow a lot more one-sided than I had expected, and look at all those votes!
So, Freya’s Theme has found it’s kryptonite, leaving only two characters left (Zidane and Vivi). Meanwhile, Flamenco joins the top eight!
Round 3 – Battle 5
Zidane’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/31%20-%20Zidane%27s%20Theme.mp3)
One of two character themes left. Zidane’s Theme really is epic, a very long loop with many different parts to it and some variations of other themes, it’s too bad it’s only heard once in the game during a very short scene which is worth dragging out just to hear it.
VS.
Aloha De Chocobo – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/40%20-%20Aloha%20de%20Chocobo.mp3)
One of this game’s two Chocobo themes, the one that’s doing better right now. For the Forest, Lagoon, and other Chocobo paradises. Can it beat Zidane? Hmm…
I choose Zidane’s Theme by far.
So Freya may not have made it, but Zidane’s Theme makes the top 8! Now from the characters, it’s just him and one more possible one. And that’s it for the Chocobos, oh well, Round 3 is plenty.
Round 3 – Battle 6
Vivi’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/05%20-%20Vivi%27s%20Theme.mp3)
So Zidane’s Theme just made it to the top eight, now Vivi’s the only other character left to possibly join him. He’s got a nice touch of a theme, which is remixed a lot throughout the OST for anything having to do with Black Mages.
VS.
Immoral Melody – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/51%20-%20Immoral%20Rhythm.mp3)
A creepy variation (distant) of Kuja’s Theme, also used in Kuja scenes when he’s plotting something evil… that pipe organ always gets me. In the last round it was determined that it’s superior to Kuja’s Theme itself by beating it, so should it make top 8?
So I’m gonna go with Vivi’s Theme. I love Immoral Melody, but only because of the intro.
No love for Immoral Melody here, and Vivi’s theme is catchy, too.
Alright, so Vivi’s Theme joins Zidane’s in the top 8. And this marks the end of Immoral Melody…
Round 3 – Battle 7
Assault of the White Dragons – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/96%20-%20Assault%20of%20the%20White%20Dragons.mp3)
Or whatever you want to call it. Another semi-popular song that I wouldn’t be surprised if it made the top 8, as the Black Mages seemed to like it as well. I’m not usually a fan of FMV themes but I like this one. It should have been used in a battle though! Seeing as it loops and all.
VS.
Slew of Love Letters – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/73%20-%20Slew%20of%20Love%20Letters.mp3)
Another theme especially designed for a scene, one of the funniest most memorable scenes in the game. And it’s fitting perfectly for it! It’s proven to be very popular here.
So… dragon or love letters? I say Assault of the White Dragons.
This song should make it to the final, though. Semi-Finals at the very least.
Fuck I’m too late to vote for Immoral Melody but one vote wouldn’t have changed the outcome…
Also I fail this Rumble for eliminating Song of Memory in Round 1.
Closer battle than I expected, the love letters really do have a following. But unfortunately for them this marks their end, and a spot in the top 8 for the Dragons!
And… concluding this round is:
Round 3 – Battle 8
You’re Not Alone! – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/93%20-%20You%27re%20Not%20Alone!.mp3)
Another track with a hell of a following. Shiro Hamaguchi seemed to like it, at least, as does this rumble. So far it’s had some powerhouse opponents, will it be the last to join the top 8?
VS.
Mystery Sword – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/48%20-%20Mystery%20Sword.mp3)
Another track with quite a bit of a following, a creepy ominous variation of Beatrix’s theme (Loss of Me) which just lost, so it’ll be interesting if this at least makes it to the top 8? Also, call it whatever you want.
Regardless, my vote is for You’re Not Alone!
I have a feeling I won’t be alone in choosing that. 😉
Meh
It was a key part in one of the best moments in the entire Final Fantasy series.
A serious whooping, I guess this is where the Sword of Doubt meets it’s end. YNA was always a powerhouse. As were most of the top 8 contenders… which this is the last to join.
So this concludes this round… I’ll set up/start the next one later tonight. In the meantime feel free to discuss/commiserate over the results.
That’s how I feel about Immoral Melody.
Anyway, time to start Round 4, which will consist of four battles! You could call it the quarterfinals.
Round 4 – Battle 1
Assault of the White Dragons – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/96%20-%20Assault%20of%20the%20White%20Dragons.mp3)
One of the few FMV themes that loops, only because it’s half FMV and half dialogue. It’s this game’s "Movin’". Particularly epic, and no surprise it made it to the quarterfinals. It’s just a matter of placement now.
VS.
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/07%20-%20Vamo%27%20alla%20Flamenco.mp3)
One of this game’s classic tracks, and one of the few to hold the title of being liked by both Shiro Hamaguchi and the Black Mages. It’s been a pretty tough competitor so far…
My vote will be for Assault of the White Dragons. They both deserve something… but only one can win in the end.
It is the reason the attack on memoria is one of the best moments in IX. It really gives an epic feel to the final dungeon.
A favorite n__n
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco 6-5 Assault of the White Dragons
So this is bye bye for that riveting FMV theme, it’s finally met its match. Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco, welcome to the top 4/semifinals!
Round 4 – Battle 2
The Airship, Hilda Garde III – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/85%20-%20The%20Airship,%20Hildagaldy.mp3)
This game has truly one of the best airship themes out there. I’ve always thought it was underlooked seeing as I don’t hear it talked about it as much, but this rumble has proven it to be popular! Well, as soon as you hear those arpeggios in the beginning, you know it’s gonna be awesome. It’s always been hiding in the shadows, but now it’s shining. Will it make the final four?
VS.
Vivi’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/05%20-%20Vivi%27s%20Theme.mp3)
One of the two character themes left. Vivi’s Theme, heard only once in the game, is very catchy and no surprise it made it this far. It’s got some variations which are all themes relating to black mages, but this is Vivi. who is arguably an awesome character with a fun theme. Final Four?
I like Vivi, but I’d rather see The Airship, Hilda Garde III win this one. If it was the other remaining character I might have voted differently.
Very lively, a favorite =)
I used to fly aimlessly often, just to hear that
Sorry fastidious percolator.
LOL, me too.
So yeah, voting’s still open and I’ll update tomorrow.
So Vivi’s gone now, leaving one character theme left in this rumble… whether or not it’ll be in the top four is still up for question, but anyway, good for Hilda Garde for making it to the final four!
Round 4 – Battle 3
Zidane’s Theme – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/31%20-%20Zidane%27s%20Theme.mp3)
So we have the last main character standing, which happens to be the main hero of this game. And he’s got a hell of an epic beautiful theme, which may be a little superior to those of the other characters mainly because of its length. Will Zidane make the final four? Let’s just hope he doesn’t get a red card 😛
VS.
The Place I’ll Return to Someday – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/01%20-%20The%20Place%20I%27ll%20Return%20To%20Someday.mp 3)
One of the main main themes of this game, which is beautiful and fun to listen to on the menu. It’s proven to be popular not just in this rumble, but by the fact that it’s got a lot of variations on the OST (well, it is the main theme) and remixes by other artists. I wouldn’t be surprised if it made the final four as well… this should be an interesting battle.
This may be a hard choice for some, but for me it’s easily Zidane’s Theme, don’t even need to think twice.
I gotta go with Zidane’s Theme as well, its one that stuck with me when I heard it, more so than the other.
Another favorite! =D
Pretty close battle, Zidane was in the lead several times, but the this game’s intro theme made an incredible comeback to victory and a spot in the top four! Now, all the characters are gone… but let’s get this last battle over with.
Round 4 – Battle 4
Hunter’s Chance – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgS0fSFGqmI) (Youtube)
So the hunter’s still active and kickin’ and got a chance. Will the Festival of the Hunt (though I associate it more with Hades) have a chance at the top 4?
VS.
You’re Not Alone! – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/93%20-%20You%27re%20Not%20Alone!.mp3)
Another incredibly popular power-house of a theme. Really fitting for the mood set for the scene it’s used in. It’s been a strong contender so far, will it join the semi-finals?
I gotta say so far I haven’t really been too happy with the results of this round, except for one. As for this, I’d rather see a victory for You’re Not Alone!
(that theme always reminded me btw of some other tune, very familiar to something I probably heard once and can’t remember the name or anything of it at all :D)
It reminds me of a Phil Collins song for some reason.
Either it’ll win or make it to the semifinals. That is only just.
Hunter’s Chance for me.
I never saw the big fascination with Hunter’s Chance.
love ’em both. I am preferring this one however.
You’re Not Alone! 9-5 Hunter’s Chance
So, Zidane’s breakdown, the last to join the final four, is not alone! Hunter’s Chance did live out to it’s potential though, so this is goodbye.
Semi-finals will commence tomorrow. And for them I will give a little more time, like I did for FFX. In the meanitime feel free to discuss and commiserate about the results. I know I have a lot of commiserating myself about the results of this round, but we can get to that when I’m more sober.
Semifinals – Battle 1
The Place I’ll Return to Someday – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/01%20-%20The%20Place%20I%27ll%20Return%20To%20Someday.mp 3)
One of this game’s main themes, it’s been proven to be popular as it made it’s way to the final four! It’s got a load of variations on the OS, let’s see how far it can live up to its name.
VS.
The Airship, Hilda Garde III – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/85%20-%20The%20Airship,%20Hildagaldy.mp3)
This game’s airship theme also made it’s way up there! In fact, it’s like a hidden gold contender, seeing as it’s practically the only track of the final four that’s not overly-hyped, and is overshadowed by those that are.
Oh, me? The Airship, Hilda Garde III. Fingers crossed.
Ah hell with it.
The Airship, Hilda Garde III
The Place I’ll Return to Someday
Flipped a coin, literally.
And the results are:
The Place I’ll Return to Someday 10-8 The Airship, Hilda Garde III
Well, wow, talk about a comeback! The airship really was winning before at 8-2, but this "Place I’ll Return to" theme really doesn’t give up! It’s got yet to meet it’s kryptonite… if it has any, that is! It’s on it’s way to the final. The airship will still have a shot at third place.
But first we gotta determine the other finalist.
Semifinals – Battle 2
You’re Not Alone! – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/93%20-%20You%27re%20Not%20Alone!.mp3)
Another song that’s hard to say no to… it was popular from the start. I don’t think anyone will ever be alone in voting for it! It’s also one of a kind, not based on any variations!
VS.
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/07%20-%20Vamo%27%20alla%20Flamenco.mp3)
Another classic theme that happens to be one-of-a-kind as well! Remembered more for the Chocobo Hot/Cold than the sword fight. But both the Black Mages and Hamaguchi liked it… should be a pretty interesting battle.
Again I’ll leave this open for a while, and I leave a vote for You’re Not Alone!
To not just bitch, here a vote for
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco
???
I second that.
Anyway, keep ’em coming.
You’re Not Alone 9-7 Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco
Again, what a close battle! Though, YNA seemed to be a step ahead throughout most like that battle. A lot closer than last one, but no comeback battle. But anyway, meet the other finalist, You’re Not Alone! Flamenco still gets a shot at third place, though.
And… that battle is now!
3rd/4th Place Battle
Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/07%20-%20Vamo%27%20alla%20Flamenco.mp3)
So it just lost to You’re Not Alone… well, that wasn’t the last of it, as you can see, because it’s gotta determine it’s placement here! So, let’s hear it for Vamo ‘Alla Flamenco!
VS.
The Airship, Hilda Garde III – Listen Here (http://lamda.bluelaguna.net/ff9music/85%20-%20The%20Airship,%20Hildagaldy.mp3)
The great Hilda Garde III. Much overlooked track, glad it got some recognition in this rumble. So it just faced it’s loss in the semi-finals… no big deal, at least it made it this far. Will it hold the 3rd place?
Easy choice for me here, I’m gonna go with the one I voted for, of course. And that’d be The Airship, Hilda Garde III!
Tough choice, both are favorites.
I do prefer the Spanish flavor, though. ;D
"impudent urinal" <=== awesome name, cookies for you (kind of ignored it, lol)
Cookies belong to Sarah for the name. Unless they’re snickerdoodles then that shit is mine.
recommence on-topic voting….
‘nuf said.
So… third place is decided, and it shall go to… THE AIRSHIP, HILDA GARDE III!
Yay, I’m glad to see that such an overlooked theme made it into the top four, or should I say top three!
But we still have the final battle. Both the songs here are popular, and one of them has to win. I believe this was started back in August… well, time to end it.
As I said over at the KH rumble, BlueLaguna have disabled streaming, so the links here will be via Youtube now.
FINAL BATTLE
The Place I’ll Return to Someday – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHLBrtpZ5gY&feature=related)
The menu theme… who knew that would actually have a shot at winning this rumble? Well, it is beautiful and one of the game’s main core themes. Best of luck to it!
VS.
You’re Not Alone! – Listen Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHsXNkI1rfA&feature=related)
Another immensely popular theme with a shot at winning this. Unlike it’s opponent, it’s a one-of-a-kind without any variations… so while it’s "not alone" it is a stand-alone, which makes it special. Also during one of the most emotional parts of the game… best of luck in this battle!
Okay, again, the one I voted for. You’re Not Alone!
I also have a feeling I won’t be alone in voting for it.
The song is just awesome in how it is both a bit sad and yet inspirational.
You’re Not Alone! 9-6 The Place I’ll Return to Someday
This is it… the winner of this rumble is…
YOU’RE NOT ALONE!!!
And I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking it was deserving of a win.
Okay, I’m done for now, someone else pick this up.
I suppose i could give it a try? If no one wants it that is.
Guess I’ll have to go back and see what hasn’t been done. Well what hasn’t been done recently since I’m sure every category has been done at some point.
*searches thread for a few boss names and gets no results*
Guess you’re right.
That’s a pretty good and simple category, too.
I’m up for Bosses. Anyone opposed?
I don’t think a lot of them are worth mentioning (the first 3 boss fights with Steiner, the monster that holds Garnet captive, Baku) are pretty worthless for instance. So how many should be in the Rumble?
Also considering you mentioned Hades and Ozma and Tantarian, does that list include Quale? Can’t forget him! He’s the only other optional boss I can think of.
And yeah, 32 sounds good. I’ll think about which ones I’m not including.
Steiner
Prisoncage
Baku
Ralvurahva (the snake thing you fight in that secret Gargant passageway the first time and that escapes.)
Earth Guardian (we have his Chaos Guardian self later on later so what’s the point)
Ralvuimago (the other snake thing you fight on the secret Gargant passageway)
Amarant (when Zidane has to take him on by his lonesome)
Does anyone object to this list?
Okay. Silver Dragon is back in and the other dragon thing from Gargant Roo is out.
To decide on who fights who I just picked names out of a hat. Dunno how everyone else does it but this seemed a fair way to do it.
Let’s get started then.
Round 1 – Battle 1
Valia Pira
The ultimate boss of Kuja’s fabulous Desert Palace. By examining the bloodstones littered throughout the dungeon you can weaken its defenses and thus have a much easier boss fight.
vs.
Nova Dragon
The source of the Silver Dragon swarm that attacks the Invincible as it tries to enter Memoria. Defeating it grants the party entrance to the final dungeon of the game.
Definately a battle i remember cuz i used to get stuck with my crap people in desert palace.
Nova Dragon: 6
Valia Pira: 4
So a neck-and-neck battle for most of the way but the dragon pulls it out in the end.
Next battle…
Beatrix
("How ridiculously weak… Isn’t there anyone who is worthy of facing me?")
The Alexandrian General tat the party crosses swords with three times.
…and gets their collective butts kicked three times.
vs.
Soulcage
("I have seen the end of my thousand-year life, and it is not now."
WRONG!)
After traveling through the thoroughly creepy Iifa Tree we meet the source of the infamous Mist. He gives us our first bit of exposition on the things to come before we fight him. Then there’s no more Mist! (for a while anyway)
I did get them all in the end, even from Ozma.
Weird, I never had any problems stealing all the items from Beatrix.
btw The different story was with Tantartian:D I NEVER got Demon’s Mail from him…
Beatrix: 8
Soulcage: 3
Not a surprising outcome. Soulcage was cool and all but even if the fights with her were rigged, Beatrix is a true fan favorite.
Next battle….
Maliris
The first Chaos Guardian in the Rumble. He is the former Fire Guardian of Terra that we see but never actually fight. Not much else to say about him…. Casts Reflect on himself and bounces fire spells off it at the party and when defeated it uses Raining Swords.
vs.
Deathguise
Another disk four boss. After having a short discussion with Kuja he summons this boss for you to fight. He uses death magic (duh) and Meteor. Apparently Kuja wastes him after you win. I never noticed that before.
Also apparently a tribute to some monster from FFVI.
Deathguise: 5
Maliris: 4
So close but Deathguises advances.
Next battle…
Ozma
The super-boss of Final Fantasy IX. By hunting down all the Chocograph Pieces you can gain access to the Chocobo Air Garden. where you fight Ozma.
Some find him easy, some find him hard…Not much else to say.
vs.
Hilgigars
A big giant thing you face on the way from Conde Petie to Madain Sari. Not much to say about this guy except his name and general looks reminds me a lot of the first tough enemy iN FFII, the Hilgigas.
I’m voting Ozma to get this one over with. Totally one-sided.
Stealing the Fairy Flute was fun 😡
Wish I’d been here for the previous round, I loved Maliris’ Mustard Bomb attack which meant if you didn’t cure the target of it and the target made an action it’d die.
Awesome animation for it too.
Hilgigars: 2
And next up…
Meltigemini
So Zorn & Thorn haven’t been in the Boss Rumble yet but here is their true form. Likes to influct status effects on the party including the crappy Vrrus effect. You can steal the Demon’s Veil from them..er..it.
vs.
Black Waltz No. 2
Not long after facing Black Waltz #1, we run into this fellow. He can use some level 2 magic like Fira and if you attempt to use magic on him with Vivi, he’ll counter-attack with a pretty powerful spell.
my vote easily goes to Black Waltz No. 2.
Double the fun, I say.
It’s truly the first boss that really tests you. Some might breeze through him but it will still show that it can dish out a respectable amount of punishment.
Meltigemini: 5
Fairly close but BW2 wins it in the end.
Next up…
Garland
The Master of Terra and the Big Bad….well, it looked like it anyway. The second fought of the tri-boss battle at the end of Disk 3, he uses Telekinesis and other powerful magic like Flare and Stop.
vs.
Ark
Lucky for the party, he’s not quite at the LEvel he is when you can summon him. You encounter this boss as you try to claim the Gulug Stone for Kuja. He looks kinda like a helicopter what with the propeller and all but he has a giant sword.
Ark
but Garland more ftw.
Props to Ark though, it was a bugger to kill.
Ark: 2
So the ruler of Terra stomps a Terran creation.
Next battle:
Lich
The only Chaos Guardian who we actually fought back when they were the Shrine Guardians. Likes to use Doom and Death.
vs.
Black Waltz No. 1 and Sealion
Two bosses for the price of one! Made all that much more annoying by the fact you have only Zidane for this boss battle due to reasons of the others dying. Though Sealion is the real threat, it’s best to take out Black Waltz because otherwise he’ll just heal the beast and negate any attack you hit it with.
2 vs 1 FTW
Lich: 1
Not much excitement on this battle.
Tantarian
My god this has to be one of the most annoying battles ever. I had forgotten how gay it was to get him out of his book but I just watched a video on YouTube where a some poor guy fought him for over 8 minutes before he decided to come out.
Anyway, while hidden in the book, Tantarian will use Doom, Paper Storm and a physical attack. Once revealed, he is beatable and pretty much only uses Poison.
vs.
Zorn & Thorn
It’s the Not-So-Harmless Jesters. We’ve had to put up with their nonsense speak and their black magic creations and so it was very fun to beat the crap out of them. They each have one super spell power, Flare and Meteor but they need to charge it before using it. You can defeat them both before they even use the spells, though.
I wasted so many hours just to steal that accursed Demon’s Mail from Tanatarian, but to no avail.
Tantarian: 5
Well looky, our first tie! Well I’ll be the power-mad despot that I am and break the tie with my own vote. I vote Tantarian because Zorn & Thorn were just too easy.
So
Tantarian: 6
Zorn & Thorn: 5
Next battle….
Lani
The bounty hunter who the party squares off against in Fossil Roo. As myself and Zidane noticed, she’s pretty damn hot.
Oh yeah, boss details… She uses a lot of powerful magic and physically attacks with her huge axe. Mainly she attacks Garent so you’ll want to keep her alive. Also remember to steal the Coral Sword.
vs.
Taharka
The boss you face at the end of Ipsen’s Castle when you’ve discovered all the Shrine Mirrors. The gimmick of the level means the weaker your weapon is, the more damage it will do to him. Physical attacks won’t do much as he will Compact himself. Fire is the best bet.
But I must vote Lani. She’s hot.
Taharka: 1
Take note. Sexy chicks with huge blades = win.
Next battle…
Tiamat
One of the Chaos Guardians fought in Memoria. Quite the tricky guy as he can absorb Magic and Strength from party members, thus reducing that stat by half. Also if a character under Float status attacks him, he’ll use Snort and eject that character from battle…permanently.
vs.
Antlion
It was such a nice horrible monstrosity…until it decided to attack Puck. An annoying bugger with his constant Counter Horn. Also Sandstorm causes massive damage on all and inflicts the Blind status.
Tiamat: 2
Next fight…
Trance Kuja
The Big Bad of IX in his ultimate form. Most people say he’s too easy and it isn’t helped he’s not even the final boss of the game…
Nevertheless, he has some decent magic like Holy and Curaga not to mention magic unique to him like Flare Star and Ultima.
vs.
Zaghnol
The optional ultimate fight during the Festival of the Hunt in lindblum. Kinda reminds me of a giant warthog.
Not much to say…. The fight has a lot of dickery potential because you can make Zidane or Freya lose the tournament, even if they wer e leading in points, by having them KO themselves.
So let’s get this stomp over with. I vote Trance Kuja.
…you’ve made a powerful enemy this day.
Encontr??? a Kratos!
Zaghnol: 1
A stomp as I predicted…
Next up.
Black Waltz No. 3
The final BW to appear in the FFIX Boss Rumble and probably the most famous and popular of the buncy by a healthy margin. Due mainly to a badass couple of FMVs with him.
Unlike the others, he is fought multiple times. After being beaten by the party on the cargo ship, he goes haywire. The party then again fights him with guest star party member Marcus.
vs.
Gizamaluke
On the party’s way to the doomed Burmecia, they must pass through a grotto that is named after this fellow. So at the end of the dungeon it is only fitting you fight the boss who has gone mad.
Likes to use Water, Silent Voice to cast Silence on Vivi and a physical attack. Main issue here is his rather large (relatively speaking) amount of HP.
Black Waltz No. 3: 7
Gizamaluke: 0
Not surprising.
Next fight
Silver Dragon
We finally get to fight that thing Kuja flew around on for the first 2 disks as the beginning of the tri-boss battle on Terra. Not much else to say about it… It has a physical attack and anoteher attack that strikes the whole party.
vs.
Plant Brain
The first real boss of the game. You start off battling it with Zidane, Vivi and Steiner but luckily Blank shows up to give some much needed assistance. It can blind the entire party and it has a pretty powerful Thunder spell.
Silver Dragon was just a warm up before a serious fights.
Silver Dragon: 2
Sorry for the delay in ending this.
not a close battle at all.
So, moving on…
Quale
Quina’s master who challenges you once Quina has caught 99 frogs. Though not particularly strong offensively, he has a lot of status effect magic that can be a real pain. Including the ever-dreded Confuse status. (god I hate that_
vs.
Necron
The real final boss of the game… Why, no one is exactly sure. Theories abound but all of them fail to make up for the fact Kuja should have been the final boss.
Anyway… Necron is a nasty piece of work. He has pretty much every strong spell in the game including the -aga spells, Holy and Flare. He can also perform three actions per turn which allows him to Portect and Shell himself easily. His Grand Cross inflicts all status effects in the game.
Quale: 1
Brutal stomp for the final boss off FFIX.
‘
Note: THe guide I used to tally up the number of bosses was including a monster I don’t consider a boss (the Red Dragons in Mt. Gulug). Once I discovered this, it threw off my calculations. So I just decided to eliminate a boss I doubt anyone will miss. Out of the 3 left, I chose Kraken.
I think I made the right choice as these are the two bosses left.
Kuja
The bastard who was clearly the main villain from the moment we saw his flashy FMV at the end of Disk 1. The party finally fights him on Terra as the conclusion to the tri-boss fight gauntlet. He mainly uses Thundaga and Demi and he likes to taunt the party when they attack him. For obvious reasons….
Very memorable end to this fight.
vs.
Hades
The optional boss in Memoria. He looks pretty cool and has a few nasty attacks like Judgment Sword to reduce your HP to 1 not to mention some status effects like Freeze. What you really need to watch out for is Doomsday, the most powerful black magic in teh game (I believe anyway) which he’ll use after counting down. After being defeated he can be used to symthesize some of the greatest things in the game like the Robe of Lords and the two Pumice Pieces you’ve collected to form Ark.
I choose Kuja, but since I am pretty late in to this rumble I don’t know what we are voting on if its a which was the harder boss or what, I’d go with Hades.
Thanks, Agent!
I never bothered playing IX enough to reach Hades.
Kuja: 4
So it seems just plain old Kuja is out but at least he gives it a bit of the fight to end the first round of this rumble.
The bosses remaining are:
Plaint Brain
Trance Kuja
Hades
Black Waltz No. 3
Black Waltz No. 1 and Sealion
Lani
Black Waltz No. 2
Necron
Garland
Antlion
Beatrix
Ozma
Tantarian
Deathguise
Nova Dragon
*grumble* As you might have noticed, we have fifteen left. I keep miscounting somehow. Just fuck it. The final match of this round will just have to have 3 participants.
So let’s get started.
ROUND 2
Lani
The sexy bounty hunter who the party fights on their way to the Outer Continent. She is pretty fast and uses a giant axe. Um…not much else to say that hasn’t been said.
Oh and she’s hot.
vs.
Black Waltz No. 2
An upgrade from #1 as he can use some level 2 black magic. However you have your entire party now so it probably won’t be as challenging as fighting No. 1 with just Zidane.
No. 2 is meh
No. 2 is meh
Lani: 9
Black Waltz No. 2: 0
And BW2 gets the axe.
Next battle…
Nova Dragon
The dragon that commanded the army of Silver Dragons that swarms the Invincile as they try to enter Memoria. And…um…. Not much else to say. Uses attacks called Shockwave and shares an attack with Garland called Psychokinesis which is just a telekinetic slam attack.
vs.
Plaint Brain
The first real boss of the game. it commands the Evil Forest and you must fight ti to save Garnet from…whatever it was going to do to her. Likes to use Pollen which casts Darkness on all party members and makes Zidane and Blank basically useless. Fire is obviously the giant plant’s biggest weakness, though.
Meh
Nova Dragon: 1
And the dragon is out of here.
Next up.
The ruler of Terra and maker of our main hero and antagonist. The second fight in the tri-boss batle at the end of Disc 3, he uses Psychokinesis like Nova Dragon as well as other powerful attacks like Flare.
vs.
[B]Deathguise
Third-to-last boss in the game. Trance Kuja summons it to fight you but you kick its ass anyway. Ueses Death (shocking) and Meteor and you should watch out for the latter.
Deathguise: 2
The ruler of Terra progresses on.
Hades
As mentioned, this is a secret boss on Memoria. He is the best synthesizer around so after defeating him you can use the two Pumice Pieces you have to get the summon Ark. As for the boss part, his worst attack is Doomsday which is the nasties tblack magic in the game and can fuck up your entir eparty.
vs.
Black Waltz No. 3
Thanks to a combination of facts, such as fighting it twice and the badass FMVs with it, this guy seems to be one of the most beloved and memorable bosses in the game. After beating it up on the airship to Lindblum it malfunctions and later is finished by Garnet, Steiner and Marcus.
Hades – 2
Unsurprising outcome. BW3 seems like a favorite to get to at least the Semifinals.
Next battle…
Beatrix
The boss who really needs no description. Though every single boss fight with her is hopeless, she’s so sexy and badass that no one seems to care. Extra points because you get to use this boss later on for a little while.
Random fact: She one-shots your party with Stock Break the first 2 times then has to use Climhazzard the third tie. Perhaps the party was getting too strong for her…..
vs.
Tantarian
The most annoying little fucker in the game. This optional boss is all about luck as he hides in a book. Depending on what page you happen to strike, he may or may not pop out. Which means you could be fighting him for several minutes and not really accomplish anything.
..wow, these two have something in common in that respect at least.
Beatrix as a boss, all she has going for her is the music. The only challenge with her, is that of trying to steal everything, and that was wicked annoying.
I have bad memories with Tantarian – spending days trying to steal his Demon’s Mail, which was not worth the effort.
original idea.
Not really… This idea was already used in FFV.
I guess I’ll step in here and give my vote to….
Beatrix: 5
Tantarian: 4
Sorry but I hated that little…whatever it was. And Beatrix at least had some good boss music and was sexy.
Now for our second-to-last battle of this Round…
Ozma
vs.
Necron
Superboss vs. final boss. Not much to say that hasn’t already been said and I’m guessing everyone voting will have a good memory of both here.
Necron: 2
Tough break for the Space Flea From Nowhere final boss.
And our final battle of the round is a threeway battle. That probably won’t last very long so let’s get this murder over with.
Trance Kuja
The final battle with the main villain of the game. Kuja gone Super Saiyan. You never actually "win" the fight. More like Mutual Destruction.
vs.
BlacK Waltz No. 1 and Sealion
A tough battle not made any easier by the fact it’s only Zidane fighting.
vs.
Antlion
Fought in Cleyra. Becomes regular enemy on Disc 3. Annoying counterattack to any physical damage.
…Whattya mean this isn’t jeapordy? D<
{ Now emboldened for your delight! :3 }
Trance Kuja
So I’ll start this up but I probably won’t be on again for a week or so.
Black Waltz No. 1 and Sealion: 5
Trance Kuja: 2
Antlion: 1
Didn’t see this coming. Well I guess difficulty is what a boss should be judged on, not how awesome they or their music are.
Our 7 remaining bosses are:
Black Waltz No. 1 and Sealion
Lani
Beatrix
Black Waltz No. 3
Plant Brain
Ozma
Deathguise
So the next battle will be…
Lani
Sexy bounty hunter with an axe to grind. You fight her before entering Fossil Roo on your way to the new continent. A decent challenge.
vs.
Black Waltz No. 3
Definite favorite to go all the way. Badass cutscenes and two boss fights make BW3 a beloved boss.
Lani: 1
Next fight.
Deathguise
Third-to-final boss in the game. Kuja summons it in the Crystal World and then kills it when you beat him. Watch out for Meteor.
vs.
Plant Brain
First real boss in the game. Blank lends a hand, thank god. Best bet is to use Fire Sword between Vivi and Steiner and to have Vivi cast Fire.
Deathguise: 3
Pretty close fight but our first real boss takes it.
It appears my inability to do simple math strikes again. We have 3 participants left before the semifinals:
Beatrix
Black Waltz No. 1 and Sealion
Ozma
Now I tallied up all their votes and from the last two rounds and Ozma had 16 while Beatrix had 13 and BW1 had 11.
So unless there are any objections, I’m just going to bump Ozma up to the next round and let this match take place to determine his opponent.
Beatrix
Alexandrian General and Hot Chick With A Sword, Beatrix is completely unbeatable as a boss. This hasn’t stopped her from dominating her way so far. The great music and her character helps.
vs.
Black Waltz No. 1 and Sealion
Fighting a giant ice summon thing and a super black mage with just Zidane isn’t exactly easy at this point in the game. Nevertheless, you must win if you’re to save your friends from freezing to death.
Black Waltz No. 1 and Sealion: 3
Well let’s do it guys!
SEMI-FINALS
Black Waltz No. 3
So the most beloved of all the BMs has come far. His cutscene badassery and the fact you fight him twice probably has a lot to do with that.
Whatever the reason, he’s here and ready to kick ass.
vs.
Plant Brain
First real boss of the game as I’ve said several times now. This giant garden variety abomination is decently challenging and would have whipped our party at the time had it not been for Blank’s timely arrival. Thanks for being fashionably late there Blank.
Plaint Brain: 0
Unsurprising if a bit disappointing.
Hopefully this will be a bit better.
Beatrix
Alexandrian General. Hot Chick With A Sword. Scripted to win all three boss fights.
vs.
Ozma
Superboss. Giant spinny thing. Depending on who you ask, too easy or very hard.
Beatrix: 0
Now this was surprising! Good job there FFS.
And so….
There can be only one.
FINALS
Black Waltz No. 3
"I exist only to kill! I exist only to kill! I exist only to kill! I exist only to kill…!"
A little cutscene action goes a long way and it’s propelled BW3 to teh finals. It remains to be seen o that is enough tow in the whole thing though.
vs.
Ozma
"There…danger in the sky. If you dar…to face it, use this rec…to find your way." -Cid I of Lindblum
So you collected the Chocograph Pieces. Maybe fought all the Friendly Monsters. Your reward? A nice peaceful paradise in the sky.
And the ball of doom.
No one is sure what Ozma is. All that is known is it’s ready ot kill any poor soulw ho stumbles across it.
Let the final bout begin!
Somebody must’ve had a very bad day to make a sphere the most powerfull enemy in game.
However, the result is obvious, so I’ll end the battle:
Black Waltz No. 3 – 1
Ozma – 4
The obvious winner is Ozma!
Okay, this rumble is now open to be picked up by anyone else that wants to continue it, but please send me a PM first if you plan to.
