Halo Series, is this overrated?

I saw the FF7 overrated thread and wnated to ask this, I mean I played it and I thought it was okay but I think many other FPS games are better, what about you guys?

Personally, I feel that the series is overrated. I never understood its popularity, either, as there are a lot of FPS’s that are better. So yeah, you’re not alone.

Halo became so popular because at the time, only deep FPS’s were on the PC. Therefore, console exclusive gamers didn’t people them. However, when Halo came out, Console Gamers got to experience what PC Gamers were playing for the last decade. Not to mention, PC Gamers being able to play a deep FPS on their television sets instead of computer monitors.

That’s pretty much why the game is so praised. The first Halo wasn’t a bad game at all, but yes I have played much better FPS’s.

And I thought it was a little overrated, but it was mainly the hype that the two games after the initial one recieved.

The only "deep" FPS to come to Xbox in my reckoning would have been Deus Ex: Invisible War. At least it had more gameplay elements than point and shoot. I also liked XIII as well. Much more than Halo.

Do I consider Halo overrated? Yeah, a little. It’s not the greatest FPS and I can’t imagine why it would be considered alongside really great titles. The sequels however, were pretty good.

I’m really tired of seeing people say the first Halo was good. It wasn’t. One of the make-or-break aspects of a shooter is level design, and Halo’s was downright awful with its confusing lookalike corridors and expansive outdoor environments with only one small and easily-missed exit point. I actually spent ten minutes near the beginning of the game trying to figure out how to advance, and to borrow a line from someone else, that’s when the level designer should start feeling ashamed of himself.

And if you didn’t have that problem, I don’t care. You lucked out.

It did have excellent multiplayer content though (the only reason why I play it, it sure ain’t for the story). The only problem is, is that that could be said about most FPS games, especially the ones which are far more superior in general quality (in my view of course, online multiplayer games like Battlefield and Call of Duty come to mind).

Oh dear god tell me about it, I got lost in half the levels and ended up getting angry at one point and going on a mass marine slaughter, I care not for the ally that cannot give me directions!

I’ll keep this short ‘n sweet because I don’t feel like getting into a prolonged debate with some of the individuals on here. Though if it gets out of hand, I might just have to intervene.

I have nothing against it, I’ve just played so much better like Mass Effect. I mean yeah it was okay for it’s time when console gamers had nothing else, but now that there are more deep FPS (for an FPS, the stories can’t compare to RPG’S) Halo is quite honestly purposeless, well aside from making jokes in and about 😛 (red vs blue anyone???)

it is a known fact goldeneye 007 is the single greatest FPS to date.

I also liked XIII as well. Much more than Halo.
The ending was a annoying to me.

I’ve only played Halo 3, and it seems alright. I’m not really drawn into the story or anything, though. Even if I had played from the first one onwards, I wouldn’t be.

Pure and simple, Perfect Dark is better in my opinion! Also, it has a better rating nearly every site it has been rated on 🙂

Turok 2 is the best console shooter to date, better than both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, although all three are great.

I can call you out on so many levels right there, so don’t test me I can hold my own. Anyhow, Turok was definitely good it had some real defining moments with stuff like the awesome bosses and the fact that there was SOME strategy to it.

i only played XIII once in my life for about 4 minutes and loved it to death, im still hunting in flea markets for it.
would try ebay but it that takes time.

Yeah, that was a goddamned shame. The game was somewhat underrated, but I found the action to be thrilling and the story a bit deeper than your average. What I really loved about it was that every weapon had an alternate mode of attack. No FPS should avoid this, imo, unless they can offer better alternatives. I don’t know what’s so impractical about implementing fire, alt fire, and melee buttons that more games don’t do it.

Sadly, the only place I’ve seen it for sale is used at craptastic Gamestop.

Somewhat underrated?! That game was completely trashed by the mainstream reviewers. And because most people are sheep, they didn’t give the game chance, hence the low sales.

It was suppose to be a three volume game. But because of the low sales, the likely hood of a sequel is very slime.

The only thing not overrated about Halo was the soundtrack. The game itself? Meh. I could do without it. After the hype and buildup of Halo 3… I just lost all conceivable interest in the series.

most games that i find overrated often have good soundtracks: phantasy star online and halo comes in my mind. Turn the music off and you have a stale game.
First Halo was really crappy, i find the multiplayer also bad because without cars it was a bit too much walking for me. But the main problem was the level design which is really one of the worst level desigsn. The library suite might be the worst level i’ve ever seen in any FPS. The only thing that was good is that you can only have a limited amount of guns in it instead of the usual I carry rocket launcher/pistol/flamethrower sillyness seen in most games.

I can’t understand why people considered Halo 2 worse than the 1st Halo. It did do a lot of things better than the previous one especially on having every level offering something new. Multiplayer was plagued by one weapon that was a bit overpowered.

And I have not played halo 3 yet.

When it comes to best FPS i would have to pick Perfect Dark besides the low framerate or Timesplitters 2. Goldeneye was overrated imo, even the world is not enough had more variety.

Perosnally I thought the starwars clone wars battlefield 2 game was great.

The level design in Halo 1 might not have been the best at times (library…ugh), but to be fair, they weren’t going for linearity to start with – they were building this world, this Halo, and then trying to fit a linear game into it. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.

At the end of the day, it worked enough that a lot – and I mean a lot – of people fell in love with the game. The Community Manager of Bungie – Frank – once said that Halo was 30 seconds of fun over and over and over again, and I agree.

Some people like repetition, and some don’t, and I think that’s where the divide on Halo comes from. My attachment to the Halo series is based purely on personal experience – memories of three of my friends and I in his room behind his parents house, gripping the old Xbox controllers (the BIG motherfuckers) and sniping each other from across Sidewinder with pistols. A few years later, and i’m sitting in another friend’s loungeroom with Xbox S controllers, sipping back a Jack and coke while my friends get high around me, all the while seeing who can still shoot straight.

In my mind Halo is, and always will be a party game – and party games don’t have to be perfect if the party is fun.

duh.

Clearly, Halo’s deep, varied and action-packed gameplay are why it’s so popular. It has nothing to do with the fact that it was designed to take slower console controls into account, or that it surfaced at the perfect time to grasp the fledgling XBox market.

actually, if microsoft didn’t buy Bungie, because ‘they’re working on a master piece, now exclusively for xbox’ there would be no hype about the game either and people would consider it an average shooter with a few nice touches.
There wouldn’t be any money available for sequels and some might call it one of the few underrated shooters as XIII and Geist, original shooters who didn’t get much lime light(though Geist’s graphics looked dated).

I will counter every statement with the TRUTH,
HALO- Does not have any depth or enemy variety at all. Even FF7 has more enemies and they used the same models 9 times over.
DEEP- Wrong, cliched, the entire story was foretold in under an hour. (after 4 levels) They came up with no originality.
VARIED- Wrong, same enemies throughout all 3 games plus a few and of course bosses do not count.
EDIT:
ACTION-PACKED- Okay, that part’s nearly true, though if I was looking for action I’d turn to games like Force Unleashed and RE4!
