A little while ago I bought both my kids a DS Lite (had to buy 2 of course to keep the peace), but I have just heard about something called an R4 that can be used to download DS games from the Net to install in the consoles.

I would love some feedback about this R4 thingy, and whether its a great tool or if there are any pitfalls in using it.

Cheers for any help on this subject. 🙂

It’s a great little "tool"; can turn your DS into an mini-Ipod if you want; can play pretty much an DS game out there.

Biggest problem is the mem cards needed are kind of pricey.
Also, depending, you may need a two 2 gigs if just for game; 8 gig if you wanna do music (god help you)

Thanks for the response tanis_lionheart. 🙂

What size memory card usually comes with the pack?

Also, I have a question, can it play GBA games? That’ll be my main reason to buy it.

The one I bought came w/a 1 gig deal; it worked.
But, i only use mine for games.

I use my PSP to do both.

You can get this 3 n 1 or 2 to 1…whatever it’s called.

It works w/the R4 (or its clones) and you can.

I just didn’t get one because I could never justify it.

I thought that was made/translated for DS?

Thanks for the info.

1 gig sounds awfully small. May have to get myself a larger one when I get this R4.

Cheers.

True, I’d say a 2 gig is your best bet, unless you’re using it for media…

However DS games are rather small, he’s an example:
Spider-Man_Web_of_Shadows

DS Size:
64 MB

PSP:
416 MB

Mind you, this is before compression and with compression you can shrink from 15-50 percent of the size pm the DS games.
Seriously, I’ve done it with some games and it has AMAZED me at how small it can go.

Some stores sell, it depending on where you live. But if you’re in the USA, I think you’re best chance is online.

edit: can mods delete this? Sorry for the double post.

I got mine from:
http://www.realhotstuff.com/

I’m sure there’s better places, but I know that place is legit.

I have an M3 DS Real which is pretty much the same deal as the R4 and I love it. I got mine from Kick Gaming, iirc. It’s a canadian e-tailer so shipping can be a bit expensive if you’re in the states (or I guess if you’re not in Canada all together), but they were really quick about shipping and have great reviews. I got a package with mine that came with the memory expansion thing (for the GBA slot — I believe this lets you play/load GBA games) and a rumble pack which I don’t ever anticipate using.
