What did I start playing? FFXII of course as I have never finished this (Got about 60 hours into it and gave up at Pharos Subterra).
I am now using a full walkthrough so that I can acquire all the marks and extra stuff etc.
I do like the idea of having a tank, damage dealer (dps), Spellcaster (healer) and ranged damage (dps).
My question is, with the license board…How will I know what accessories, armour, weapons are for each role? And who do you recommend to use for these particular "jobs"?
Though, I do seem to remember someone here (99% sure it was Doggoneus) who outlined such roles and accompanying equipment. Search for his thread.
As for character roles and licenses, much of it is common sense. Tanks should get defensive licenses such as Last Stand and Shield Block, Damage Dealers should get Adrenaline and Battle Lore, healers and spellcasters Chanelling and Magick Lore, and everyone should (in my opinion) get HP licenses and Swiftness.
Healer would need MP + Staves?
Etc?
Also neg, I can’t find that post by Doggoneus that you mentioned ;_;
Turns out he came up with a way to play XII as X? Yeah, strange.
Here it is, anyway: Thread 40645
Collecting all the weapons and armor and accessories is a fun task, you should go for the earliest ones, some of which will involve grinding a lot if you’re after a rare one so you’ll get LP for it by the time you have it. Also as you progress, collecting the loot you need for all recipes as it becomes available makes grinding less boring and in the end you’ll have all the LP you’ll need.
And if you’re using a walkthrough, go for the rare game in each area as you progress!
Character-wise, Basch and Balthier should be damage dealers, Penelo and Ashe should be healers, and Vaan should be a tank. Fran doesn’t seem to fit anywhere, since neither her MP, Strength and HP are outstanding. Just fit her wherever you see fit.
Personally, I never did bother with this ‘job’ stuff – just gave everyone everything. Of course, some things were different per character (eg. Penelo, Ashe, Fran and Vaan learned magic first, while Balthier and Basch focused more on physical attacks), but everyone turned out the same in the end, despite the stat differences.

Be careful about killing rare game to quickly… waiting for serpentariuses to drop from the Nabreus Deadlands because you got over-zealous and killed the Aspidocholen on the Cerobbi Steppe is a pain in the ass. 😀
Don’t you get Scarletites from the Aspidochelon? Also, if you kill a rare game before you start collecting the trophies, doesn’t he reappear until you collect the trophy?
I managed to get Rogue Tomato and Thextera though, and have focused on making Vaan my tank and Penelo my Spell Damage Dealer / Off healer.
1. Yes, you get Scarletite by STEALING from Aspidochelon.
2. No, the 30 (31 if you count Thalassinon) special trophy Rare Game monsters are impossible to encounter before you activate the Phon Coast event with the Hunters, and once you do, you can only kill them once!
But you CAN get Scarletites more easily by fishing. Much more fun AND more reliable than the Emeralditans in the Nabraeus Deadlands. It’s 50/50!
EDIT: Oh, I didn’t notice he said Serpentarius. But yeah I think he meant Scarletite, since those are dropped by Emeralditans as well. But still, you can only kill trophy-game once. You can keep encountering and stealing and running if you want, just, kill it and it’s gone forever. Like I said though, fishing is much faster… but only after you’ve beaten Gilgamesh and gotten Lu-Shang’s Badge can you fish for it.
Serpentarius, on the other hand, you must make. Though, you can steal it from Zodiark… and win once from Montblanc.
I am up to Nalbina Dungeons (Level 6-7) and Have Vaan tanking, Fran as ranged dps and healing (bows) and Balthier as Ranged DPS (guns)

Dude, you should’ve tried a no-level up playthrough. y’know, just to see what it’s like.
Look up a 122333 guide for the game. I know that Youtube has an entire video walkthrough for it.
Hahaha, I did the same thing. I ended up stopping at the Mimic Queen because I just could not beat her. No weapons sounds fun though, I might have to give that a try.
I would be playing it more….but WoW expansion soon, so I’m getting distracted…A LOT 🙁
IIRC, the key to a no-leveling game is to run around for about 2 days straight at the beginning of the game collecting ethers and motes. 🙂
The fleeing is tedious, but the 122333 challenge gets a lot less dull when you get the Firefly (I think that’s the name of it anyway, the accessory that prevents you earning EXP?)
