sorry for my bad english, I’m french !!
I’m a 19years old music composer, this is the first time I do a complete soundtrack for a videogame.
SZC2 is an action/RPG/horror game. It’s a freeware and it has 2D graphics.
The soundtrack has 12 tracks, in a RPG-ish style (I LOVE this style of music: FF/Wild Arms/…)
You can download the game, download and listen to all the tracks here: http://thephanoo.free.fr/szc2.php
Direct Links (if you don’t want to go on my french page !! :naughty: )

Hope you like these songs 😉
Note: the first track has a better sound quality than the others, because it’s a "pre-rendered" music. the rest of the songs are originally played in real-time ("dynamically") with music sheet + instrument samples (IT tracker format, for those who know)
It’s refreshing to see someone post a soundtrack he made himself to promote it. I’d like to see more composers posting here.
Et a fait du bien de voir un compatriote ici de temps en temps. 😉
for near-unknow composers, the problem is that most of people won’t download their songs, because they probably don’t know the game/the composer ^^
I hope this soundtrack will allow me to make music for other games, maybe professionnal ^^ (dreams, dreams… :D)
A good way is to send music demos to demo makers or amateur/freeware game makers.
Also, I wanted to ask you what tools do you use ?

Yes, yesterday I released these tracks on Dogmazic (a huge website for free music). My tracks were streamed 481 times and downloaded 111 times ^^ but it’s because I am on the main page of the recently added musics xD

For composing I use ModPlug Tracker (also called OpenMPT), a free sampler/sequencer that use tracker formats (MOD, S3M, XM, IT), a quite old format but still used for "portable consoles" such as GameBoy Advance or Nintendo DS… 🙂
For the instrument samples, I use a Roland SC88-pro (same as Nobuo Uematsu ^^), and other free stuff I find on the net 🙂 + some effect VST plugins
arthierr, do you make music too ?
Now I’m more interested in making and fine-tuning soundfonts. you can listen to one of my sampling here : http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1118725&postcount=36
I should try Roland SC88-pro, thanks for the info. 🙂
they have a very particular sounding ;), I used them in the track #03.
also this song is very good… (maybe too loud, no ‘dead’ times, it’s 10 min of true power xD)
I recently tried to make a soundfont with my own instruments (ocarina, recorder, guitar, pan flute, djembe…). It’s not finished but I will try to make a complete sound bank with it, and maybe sell it if it has a sufficient quality ^^
can I listen to some of your compositions ? 🙂
I haven’t composed since 5 years now. And my old (and poorly orchestrated) cues are still in my old computer packed in a box in my junk room. So it’ll be hard to dig it back!
But maybe there’s a few tunes I composed the last years here and there in my new computer. I’ll try to find some and send them to you. I’m not a professional composer, just an amateur fond of music, so be indulgent.
I’ll listen more to the music in your website and I’ll tell you what I think.
You have a true talent, my friend. I really liked what I heard. But you can seriously improve the quality of your music if :
-you use better sounding soundfonts or VSTinstruments. I recommend something like Garritan, East-west, or Gigastudio.
-you use significantly more reverb in the final mix, so it sounds more full and rich. I recommend Liquidverb (the best quality reverb I’ve heard), this is the one I used in the cue you listened.
Now that you try to become professional you can’t avoid these steps. It will become necessary. I’m looking forward to hearing improved versions of your music.
