Pronunciation

I often debate with myself how to say certain words in FFXII and the one that has annoyed me the most is the Sochen cave palace.

So just for clarification – how does everyone else say "Sochen"?

When do they ever say it in the game?

There are quite a few cut scenes in the game, it’s been a while since I’ve played it so I can’t pinpoint it, sorry.

I say "So-chen" (like "ch" as in "chicken") but I’m almost certain that in the in-game dialogue they say "So-hen". The C being silent.

However, in the original Japanese version of the game I believe it’s called "Sohen". I know because I have the sheet music of that song and in the title which is written in Japanese the romanji spells out "soh-hen".

Dunno why they added the C.

I say "So-shen"…I guess that’s like the "ocean" crowd~

Eruyt’s a tough one, but I’ve always said "E-rooeet"…if that’s anyway to explain or pronounce that… .-.

I know this is wrong, but whenever I talk about it I move the Y a few notches back and say "Eyrut" like rhyming with Beirut.

For Eruyt Village I simply drop the "y" and say "ee-root". Isn’t this one pronounced in-game though?

I can’t remember it being said in the game but its been awhile since I’ve played that period of the story. Must of missed it.

Here’s one, pronounce Bahamut.
It irritates the crap out of me in this game cause they say

Baa-haa-mooooot (added extra letters for a long sound)

But I’ve always said it shorter like

Ba-ha-mit

Well, I always pronounced it Ba-Ha-Moot, after hearing them say it. I guess I said it Ba-Ha-Mutt before…

Why bother pronouncing the I?

Yes, I’m fairly sure it should be pronounced "mar-kee". At least that’s how I said it before I heard it. I guess they thought "mar-kwiss" Ondore sounded cooler than "mar-kee" Ondore.

Well if it’s such an official game then they have the right to pronounce anything anyway they please, be thankful they don’t throw in their own made-up words and definitions..I mean the british pronounce everything a different way too..like "spot of tea".

American: Spaut of tea.

British: Spoht of tea.
