If not, it makes for a weird coincidence. Know how a lot of the games have an "Ultima Weapon" and "Omega Weapon" boss? So, call me slow but it sort of just clicked with me now how the Esper "Ultima" and the boss "Omega Mark XII" are in the same big maze…

If it’s intentional, I guess Ultima being an Esper is the reason it slipped by me all this time.

Ultima the esper has no connection to Ultima Weapon. She is named after a villain in Final Fantasy Tactics, who in turn was named after the spell. Omega Mark XII has no real connection with Omega Weapon either. It’s named after a super boss from FFV who was also the basis for Mark XII’s design.

I would say them being in the same location was just a coincidence.

It’s not just the location, though. It’s the fact that they made them both tough and hidden battles, much like the weapons in previous games.

I already knew about both their origins.

Except while Omega is the standard challenge boss that has nothing to do with the story, Ultima is actually important to the Ivalice canon.

I know, but again, it doesn’t affect the story, as it’s never mentioned nor is there any cutscene with dialogue when you fight it. And to someone who hasn’t played tactics, Ultima would just seem like a really hidden and tough Esper. It’s also as hidden to the average non-completionist as any "Ultima Weapon" would be. And don’t forget, Ultima Weapon in VII was sort of canon to the story, though optional and rather tough, and Ruby and Emerald are just random super-bosses which pass for Omega.

So, while Ultima serves as Ivalice canon, at the same time it serves as FF tradition, ne? They’ve done dual-meanings before.

The problem I have with the notion is that when Ultima/Omega Weapon appeared in the past it was always as two non-plot centric uber bosses, with Omega Weapon always being a simple pallet-swap of Ultima Weapon (but more powerful). When SE went back and put Omega Weapon in FFVI Advance they used the same formula. While I wouldn’t deny that there is a possibility that they were put in a similar location as a reference to FFVIII, X and X-2 I would be surprised if that’s what the designers were thinking.

Well, there is VII where Ultima is plot related…

hah, and they weren’t even bosses in X-2, just encounters that aren’t even close to tough. They weren’t even in the same location either, Ultima was found in the Chocobo dungeon and Omega is found in the Farplane Glen. If you’re thinking of Via Infinito, all enemies are there.

Ultima and Omega is in every Final Fantasy game. I don’t know what the weapons are though.

Basically what Zak said though I’ll add my own twist:

They’re connected in terms of the fact that these "names" are a reoccurrance in the FF series – beyond that, there’s no connection in my opinion.

Ultima is the final "Lucavi" from FFTactics, set in the same world of Ivalice as FFXII, and the Omega in this game is simply an additional boss.
