Saw this movie just now. I wasn’t expecting much, tbh. After watching though, this has become one of my favorite movies. It really gave off an intense vibe for me that not many movies do.
Of course it’s not without its faults. I don’t like how the monster was never explained. I don’t like the cameraman’s constant "DID YOU SEE THAT?!"
Other than that, it left me wanting to watch it again, which I will do so. Hell, I think I’ll buy it.
Thoughts? Opinions? Disagreements?
It’s a monster horror film, in the POV of the "victims." It was never meant to be an intelligent movie that made you think.
I also have to give props for the camera usage. No other POV film has made me feel like I was there more than Cloverfield.
Neg, wikipedia.
Sure.

Of course it’s not Blade Runner or anything, but it’s blatantly unchallenging which I find atypical considering the creators involved, namely J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, MI: 3)
Man, that is so much lamer than some of the concept sketches I saw 🙁
Thanks DJ <333
Actually, it was this toy that comes up in Cloverfield searches I was hoping for:

That figure looks pretty bad ass though. And weirdly Cthulhu-ish. Definitely better than the movie monster.
it doesnt feel the same seeing it on a tv compared to an imax screen with ultraloud sound, but the movie is so awesome!
and well, there was no explanation to the monster IN the movie becuase that actually adds realism to the movie.
why would a partygoer bother to ask around where the hell did that thing come from instead of running for his life.

There’s a huge background story, advertisements included. Dig around and you’ll find your interesting story.
Part 2 allegedly in the works, websites up with cryptic clues….

I didn’t want an explanation during the camcorder event, but I was hoping for one after. Like, this is supposed to be being viewed in a military base (assuming since the beginning had a "PROPERTY OF U.S. ARMY DO NOT DUPLICATE" watermark) so maybe someone could have popped in and explained the aftermath?
But then again, Chewey’s right. I was curious so I dug up the info online. Plently of it, but I still want more. 🙁
You shouldn’t have to dig around to get a backstory it should be in the actual film.
I saw Cloverfield when it was in cinemas and I was dissapointed. I’m a big fan of Lost and so I expected a lot from this film because of J.J Abrams but it was just meh. For a start nothing happens for the first 20 minutes, that’s a quarter of the film! I understand they were going for realism etc. but it was too much, I nearly fell asleep. Things did get better though when something actually decided to happen. It became an entertaining but slighty frustrating film. However the only part I would describe as better than average would be the ending which to be fair was very good. The monster was weird in a good kind of way. The lack of origin/ backstory really pissed me off, hopefully the second will be better and explain more.

Maybe if the film was about the monster, yeah, but the film is about a group of friends and what happened during the night the monster attacked.
It was probably a good thing I never saw the Blair Witch Project… probably would have experienced the same deal.
Like, only 2 minutes of that movie are still enough to know what’s going on…
The things complained about where decisions instead of mistakes. Once you realize what they were going for, love it or hate it, it can be appreciated.
u should see the horror movie quarantine
it’s my best horror movie
by the way the shooting of this film just like cloverfield
but it’s waaaaaay better
In the bonus features they describe the monster as a lost baby that just woke up ans is looking for it’s mother, it’s not looking to destroy anything , it just got woken up by the meteor that fell in the sea during some of the flashbacks.
If anything was mildly better than Cloverfield in the realm of horror it would be the movie that quarantine was based off of: a movie from Spain entitled Rec.
I believe that they’re making a sequel to it was we speak though.
I bought Cloverfield on blu ray btw. Not much of a step-up from DVD, and I agree that the theatre going Cloverfield was the best option.

Actually the [REC] sequel is out, just not in the US.

Comparing Cloverfield and [REC] is like comparing Godzilla and Night Of The Living dead, why?
If we put on side the fact that both were filmed from a victim point of view with a handheld camera, they are two different genre movies.
The other is a thriller monster movie that takes place in a huge city and the other is a zombie horror thriller that takes place in an enclosed building.
And so on and on, but yeah. I just think you can’t compare them.
I will say though, my favorite line in the whole movie:
BETH: "What IS that!?"
HUD: "Um…. its a HORRIBLE thing."
Heck yes! REC… for the win.
Or should I say Senior~ Fungo’s review?
Have you seen the battle of the reviewers? When he popped up I squeed so. fucking. hard.
hook me up
that was the most epic thing ever.
