I’ve been re-playing FFX recently and (despite my best efforts) blitzball has once again absorbed me completely. This got me thinking, there’s a lot of talk on this site about a FFX-3, but instead, i was wondering about a blitzball specific spin-off.
In my opinion, blitzball is one of the most engaging and enjoyable mini-games ever and i’m sure with a little bit of thought it could make a brilliant game in its own right. Obviously, in it’s FFX state it wouldnt hold up as an entire game, so many things would need to be added to it in order to make it a more thorough experience.
Firstly, there would be the more obvious things, such as more players and techniques. But instead of randomly coming accross players there could be some sort of transer market, where players would be given money values depending on their level and how good they are and they could be bought by money recieved from participating in competitions. On top of this, as well as acquiring techniques in the classic way, they could be bought off a black market or something, which could decrease the way in which crowds and prospective players see your team and make them act differently towards you. Alternatively, if you play and act cleanly you will become more favourable with crowds and players.
Additionally, more teams could be added each with a home stadium or something, so stadiums could differ in subtle ways (such as with style).
The gameplay itself could be enhanced by including new elements such as fouling and a generally more free experience (instead of being completely restricted each time you do a move, there could be a setting where everything runs smoothly meaning you have to act very quickly with passing/tackling etc)
Finally, imagine the online play, i cant be the only one that, when playing blitzball, cant help thinking how awsome it’d be to play against a friend.
So what do you think? will all this just ruin what blitzball was or make it something more?

Discuss 🙂

I agree with your sentiment, but unfortunately Square-Enix will never pour money into creating a full version of a mini-game that was fairly divisive in the first place.

But I think it could definitely be improved and would be pretty cool if that idea ever came to be.

I personally hated Blitzball so I personally would not buy something like this.

The reason i posted this thread was because of all the talk of "oooo FFX-3 will be Rikku’s story blah blah blah" so i tried thinking of a new way around it.
I understand that it would be a great risk due to blitzball being just a mini-game, but i thought there was scope enough to develop it into a thorough an experience as the FIFA series or whatever.

Oh and if you dislike blitzball then why are you viewing this thread? :S
