I’ve had this on my mind for a while now. It involves 2 fighting games: Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

Why is it that in every Street Fighter story, whether it be in a game, or in a movie (animated..not the god-awful live action movie), that Ryi always is the victor or the winner?

The same with Mortal Kombat. Every story, every game, the ‘champion’ is always, always Liu Kang.

Why? Why is it that only Liu Kang and Ryu get to be the ‘champions’ in the story? After a while, it gets to the "No point in this, we know who the winner is already!" mindset.

Can’t the writers think of different champions? Maybe perhaps letting the evil side win? It seems kind of…boring to see the SAME guy be crowned champion EVERY time.

Fighting games have stories? They MATTER!?!?

Your argument fails. In street fighter Alpha 3, Charlie was the main hero who goes after bison with other characters tagging along. In the SFII cartoon Guile is the champion of justice, and also in The Street Fighter live action movie with Jean Claude Van Dam, and yes I’m bringing up the movie, because it counts.

I don’t think this counts as a rant.

Psycho_Cyan does make a very well, thought out and articulated argument. He clearly tackles the subject from every angle and truly renders this subject to submission. I have to agree with his argument.

Ryu won Street Fighter 1
it is not confirmed who won Street Fighter 2 but Chun-Li was well hinted in bringing down "that organization" so Chun-Li is on the list of possible winners.
Alex supposidly won Street Fighter 3

anyway, stories in fighters are best when they are simple and not convoluted.

when things get complicated, you end up with clone characters, family characters and the roster gets drowned by it.

Sega took the safe route with Virtua Fighter leaving the story out of the arcade cabinet and contained in a few words in an instruction manual

What’s Jean Claude Van Dam’s part as Guile got to do with me Flash Kicking an opponent out of a sloppy approach or throwing a Super Combo? Fighting games =/= RPGs, bro.

edit: Smash Bros. literally has no story, and the game isn’t affected. At all. Right now, it’s every bit as popular as SF ever was. Look at how massive smashboards.com is if you want evidence.

I don’t even particularly care for Mortal Kombat and I know Liu Kang was dead for at least a while!

At any rate, I am not sure why this would be a major concern. I am pretty sure no one plays fighting games for the story!

He’s a really pissed off zombie in Armageddon.

Me either, but I played Armaggedon and he was still a zombie with the chains on his wrists.
