The Comics Thread

Anyways, I think most people here know I am a pretty huge comic nerd. For a long time, I didn’t pay much attention to anything but my very favorite series/characters because I find individual issues to be not the nicest of formats, and checking out everything was prohibitively expensive. However, thanks to the internet and CDisplay (http://www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay), I now follow a ridiculous amount of comics and do my comics buying via trade paperbacks, which I love as a format.

DC publishes the bulk of the stuff I read, though I definitely follow some Marvel stuff too. I am a huge fan of superhero team up books, like Justice League, JSA, Teen Titans, loads of X-Men stuff, and Runaways, and if I hear good stuff about anything like that, I try and check it out. I am a huge, huge Batman fan and I read just about everything that involves him or the Batfamily, even if I don’t think it is particularly good. The only non-Batman solo superhero book I read right now is Ultimate Spider-Man, and it is excellent.

I do like some non-superhero stuff too, although I don’t read much of it. I really enjoy Fables and Jack of Fables, and I loved Transmetropolitan. I am planning on reading Y: The Last Man soon also, which I have heard great stuff about.

I am woefully uneducated when it comes to comics being put out by people other than DC/Marvel, and I’d love it if people could recommend me some indie-ish stuff. ^___^

I have a ridiculous amount of comics either on my harddrive or burned, and I am happy to upload some issues of pretty much anything I mention for people to check out.

Since I know a lot of people are pretty psyched up about Dark Knight, and since I also already uploaded these for Neg….These are the two Batman comics that I really think are the best to read before seeing the new movie.

The Long Halloween (http://www.sendspace.com/file/qd2g9b) is the best story involving Harvey Dent out there, imo. It’s not terribly long and it doesn’t require a huge amount of familiarity with the Batman-verse to follow, imo, so I really recommend that anyone who wants to see the movie check it out!

The Killing Joke (http://www.sendspace.com/file/7k4rma) is a comic I rave about a lot, and it’s probably the best Joker story out there, though the competition is tough! It’s a graphic novel so it’s not terribly long either.

Anyways, post away! I know that even if there aren’t a lot of huge comic nerds here, there are a lot of people curious about comics, and that is something to build off of. 😉

also, because of that same skype session, i have now DL’d tons of xmen comics. i hope to read the entire collection of comics that take place in the xmen universe. what i really look forward to is the phoenix saga, house of m, and the stand alone phoenix books, which are called something like phoenix:war song or phoenix: end song, or something like that.

I read X-Men pretty heavily in the 90s and also I dabbled in Wolverine. I’ve read a couple issues of probably most X-Men related comics, I guess 🙂

READ SPIDER-GIRL. I can’t say this enough. It is so, so good. it is the reality that I would like to consider what "really" happened in the Spider-Man story line. it has a wonderful classic comic feel without resorting to old fashioned cheesiness. It’s got a wonderful sense of humor, a fast-paced and interesting storyline where something exciting happens every single issue (something I think a lot of comic books are severely lacking these days, good gravy some of them are boring), and it manages to maintain a lot of traditional elements of the original Spider-Man storyline while also twisting things in fun new ways since it’s a young girl we’re talking about instead of a dude. May is a brainy, noble, and loving character like her father, and being Spider-Girl causes her social problems as well, but she’s also not an outcast the way Peter was, and she is actually fairly popular and has a cool football-playing boyfriend (who happens to be Flash Thompson’s son! if that is not brilliance I don’t know what is). Really, even if you are only vaguely familiar with the Spider-Man mythos and haven’t read much of it you NEED to read Spider-Girl. It’s made me love comic books again.

I also for some bizarre reason follow ASM still even despite the stupid bullshit they’ve pulled with it. I guess really the only reason is I want to know what’s going on with MJ in this new reality. I definitely skip some of the issues. I’m getting more and more angry at it as it goes by though and I’m starting to think I’ll quit reading it altogether soon. They’ve made Peter Parker decide to be a paparazzi now. I’m not kidding. These people claim they are just going to tell stories about the same Spider-Man in an altered reality but since they started they have been making Peter a more and more pathetic, obnoxious, and completely unlikeable character in every issue. His entire value system seems to have just been thrown out and every issue is just a huge checklist of extremely typical "classic" Spidey elements they wanted to include. HEY GUYS DON’T FORGET THAT OLD PARKER LUCK! HERE IS PETE GETTING UNLUCKY AGAIN! LOL! OH NO, HIS WEB SHOOTER GOT JAMMED! BET YOU’RE LOVING THIS CLASSIC MATERIAL HUH

And, of course, I read Transformers. Simon Furman’s next story arc is a 4-parter which is going to wrap up the batch of storylines he’s started, and the first arc written by someone other than him in the IDWverse is about to start, and I’m kinda nervous about it. I hope it doesn’t ruin the new storyline that Furman has so carefully put together.

I’ve also been reading Ghost Whisperer due to my absurd JLH obsession (note: I don’t recommend this. it is boring and the art is just okay aside from the covers, which are fantastic), and I randomly pick up an Usagi Yojimbo every now and then despite the fact that I’m not too keen on what it’s like these days. Anyone who hasn’t read the early Usagi material should definitely pick up the collections if you can find them though, it is downright amazing stuff, one of my all-time favorite comics.

I’m picking up Uncanny X-Men for a while maybe and if it hooks me enough I’ll stick with it. I tried leafing through a bit of Secret Invasion and it just seemed boring as hell so that’s definitely a no go.

I have, however, checked out a few of the newer Spider-Man comics, TK, and they are certainly shit, which is, coincidentally enough, exactly what Joe Quesada is full of. I was actually getting kind of interested in the direction those books were taking, what with Peter being unmasked and a fugitive from the government. To scrap that story, along with a couple decades of continuity, because that bastard didn’t like the main character being married is unforgivable.

the only comic i have is the first edition of teenage mutant ninja turtles that is lying on the bottom of my chest, where i put everything i dont need or its usefulness factor has faded.

Ndi, If you haven’t read it, you need to pick up Brad Meltzer’s Identity Crisis. This is one of the most brilliant relevant comics ever published and I have yet to find anyone who disagrees on that point. Meltzer crafts one hell of an emotional tale which introduces a lot of controversial retcons into the DCU. The pathos practically leaps off the page and boots you in the face– in a positive manner.

I’m also a Vertigo buff too, including Hellblazer, Transmetropolitan, Sandman, and most recently, 100 Bullets.

In Marveldom, one of my favourite X-books just concluded recently, the Astonishing X-Men which was written by Josh Wedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. I cannot emphasize more how much I enjoyed his 25 issue run with the series. Not only was the action great, Whedon can still make you laugh out loud just by reading a few bits of funny dialogue. The art too is quite aboveboard, illustrated in its entirety by John Cassady. If you like Warren Ellis (writer of Transmetropolitan) you’ll probably be interested to know he’s taking over Astonishing X-Men this July.

As for Spider-man, I can’t quite agree with the hasty decision to retcon his unmasking, something I thought could take the character in bolder directions. Instead, they discarded that potential in favour of a return to the norm. Now, I must declare, this isn’t all bad. The decision itself, yes, but it’s implementation? Fantastic. One More Day, as the storyline’s called painted a very nice picture of Parker’s fears. Fear of letting go, fear of failing, fear of failing to protect his loved ones. The art too was fantastic. Especially the panels featuring Mephisto, who I hadn’t really seen since Thor’s Ragnorak, I think. Of note is that Parker didn’t want to accept Mephisto’s deal and it ended up being MJ who convinced him! Nice surprise. The Brand New Day stories aren’t too bad if you can ignore/accept the bad decision that birthed them either. At the very least, I’m somewhat refreshed to see happy-go-(un)lucky Parker in lighter stories after the turgid Civil War and Back in Black.

TK, I feel obligated to inform you that the X-books are currently drowning in a very shitty event called Divided We Stand. I’ve been reading somewhat faithfully since House of M/Decimation, both of which were brilliant. Divided We Stand has no singular plot besides the X-Men disbanding yet AGAIN. Uncanny has Emma Frost and Cyclops trapped in the 60s version of San Franciso so if that’s any indication you might want to wait it out. On the other hand, Wolverine (whom I hate), Colossus, and Nightcrawler have a far better story framed by Colossus’ return to Russia. If you still want some X-action I’d suggest Astonishing X-Men, by far, the best of the X-books right now.

Lastly, I’m about to double the geek quota presently by saying that I read the Star Wars comics, specifically Knights of the Old Republic and Legacy of the Force. Both take place at opposite ends of the SW timeline with KOTOR in the past and Legacy set in the far future beyond the New Republic/Order (that’s waaaaaay after the film Return of the Jedi for those curious). KOTOR pretty much tells the story of an unlucky Jedi (Zayne Carrick) framed for murder and maybe fated to become a dark lord. It’s rather funny stuff and TK’s brief rant makes me suppose Zayne might as well be classic Peter Parker only with the Force. If you’ve played any of the KOTOR games, some of the minor characters will be familiar to you since it takes place around the time of the Mandalorian Wars. They even managed to squeeze a Revan cameo in at one point. Legacy continues the Skywalker tradition with Cade Skywalker, another reluctant Jedi cast in the role of saviour against the new Sith. It’s actually a little hackneyed, but I still read it.

I have indeed read Identity Crisis. 🙂 It can be really hard to real just because….I guess of the way that it’s brutal? But it’s very well written and really enjoyable on the mystery front too.

I think of Vertigo stuff as DC just because they’re who owns them, but I read a lot of Vertigo titles too. Are you a Fables fan, but any chance? It is such a good series and I am happy to upload some issues for anyone who wants to check it out. More people need to read it!

Whedon is someone who I think reads so much better in trade paperbacks- he’s just coming off Runaways now too, and I am so excited to be able to read all of his story properly. I’m not sure if it’s just the style he writes in or that he has delays so much, but I feel the same way about the Buffy Season 8 comics and those have been pretty timely. I love Warren Ellis and Astonishing X-men so I have nothing but high hopes for that!

Do you read X-Factor, by any chance? I am a huge, huge Peter David fan, so I fully admit that I’m probably biased, but I think it’s such a great title, and it reads so differently from other X-Men related comics. I think Peter David is wonderful at taking underused/underdeveloped b-list characters and making them shine, so it is really the perfect sort of title for him to be on. 🙂 It ties into a lot of House of M stuff too, and you said you were a fan.

i hate heroes and villains who derive their powers from magic stuff. i know it’s dumb of me, i just find it really silly, even though comics are pretty silly in general.

anyways i am almost finished cable & deadpool and i really like it! it had made me interested in all this house of m stuff and the storylines following from that, so i might check that out next, as well as the original deadpool series. i am also thinking i will look at spider-girl. the other comic i’ve read some of recently is spider-man loves mary jane, and i am ashamed to admit i … pretty much thought it… wasnt all that bad!

i used to only read marvel stuff when i was a kiddo, pretty much. i never really warmed to DC stuff. i mean the batman cartoon rocked, but aside from that it was all superman. i guess all of the dc heroes just looked sort of goofy when you’re used to a certain set of superheroes. now that i am older i think i will be a bit more open minded about the whole affair! so i will probably download those comics in a day or two, yoooo. i have been told the killing joke is really good, too.

I actually haven’t read a single issue of Fables as I have a problem with picking up new series (I usually don’t, lol). Of course I’m not adverse to reading anything new! I admit, I Wiki’d the title some time ago when I first heard of it and it didn’t sound too appealing to me. I’m willing to give it go though since you say it’s decent.

True, Whedon absolutely loves a cliffhanger, but I confess each keeps me coming back to discover what happened. just as equally though does he end a story with satisfaction, a talent which many great writers lack. I’ve been checking out Buffy Season 8 and Angel: After the Fall religiously and both titles are pretty good. At least they satisfy that nostalgic longing for sassy vampire slayers.

I’m currently reading X-Factor as part of the (bad) Divided We Stand event and I’m happy to say I’m enjoying the story at the moment. I really only got into it after House of M/Decimation, but it’s pretty good so far. I love Madrox’s whole imperfect dupe thing, it’s so randomly funny having those things pop up with different personalities. You’re absolutely right, I probably would’ve never bought Madrox as a main character without Peter David’s influence and I’m just remembering where from where I recall the name: the Spike (of Buffyverse) comics.

Belle, I am a huge fan of Cable and Deadpool! Fabian (i forget the last name) does such wonderful things with comedy and really makes Deadpool shine. The recap pages are similarly hilarious with some characters randomly breaking the fourth wall along with Deadpool, memorably, Apocalypse. I’m not sure I cared for the direction he took Cable, but Deadpool was spot on. If you’re interested, Fabian will be writing a new weekly called Trinity that features the core triumvirate of the JLA: Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. While I’m not very big into the JLA, it doesn’t disappoint at all as a source of playful amusement and superhero action complete with smashing and laser eyes.

Mangas are cool too Catastrophe, but so much harder and more expensive for me to get a hold of even though I can read Japanese to an acceptable degree. The last I read was probably Full Metal Alchemist, though I stopped some time ago when my source dried up (the shop closed). I know a lot of places online offer fan translations, but I’m a bit more comfortable with the author’s original Japanese which I can never seem to locate. =/

Yes, I get very annoyed with the whole tough-as-nails-beer-swillin-army killin-let’s-go-bub-snikt-lolz-i-just-bitch-slapped-Galactus reputation the writers give this guy. He’s a popular character, sure, but there’s no reason to consistently overrate him.

Weird. you’re the first person I have ever heard say *anything* good about One More Day. Even people who like the new direction for the character think that that story was a festering piece of shit. It’s easily the worst Spider-Man story I’m aware of, and possibly the worst comic book story I’m aware of. I guess I am happy for you if you found a way to like it, but I’m totally perplexed.

I think the fact that Peter is still so afraid of these things that he will apparently make a deal with the devil over them is downright pathetic, and is not nice to see at all. he has been Spider-Man for so long now that he should be used to these things, and he should be capable of accepting the fact that his aunt specifically told him she understood the danger involved in staying with him after his unmasking and she wanted to face it. She was totally ready to go. She would have wanted him to stay with MJ. Any moron can see that. All this story did was paint him a weak, sorry, selfish, immature, whining asshole and that seems to be more or less how they’ve continued to portray him from then on. For god’s sake the whole storyline was nothing but him running around screaming about people about how his 800 year old aunt is going to die and it’s ALL MY FAULT WAH WAH WAH. Who wants to read 20 pages of Peter Parker yelling at Dr. Strange like some kind of grade schooler who doesn’t want to go to bed?

Sometimes, I agree it’s nice to see Spider-Man stories with a lighter tone. But these stories could have been told all along, with him still married to MJ, and nobody had to write shitty stories like Back in Black… but the people who OKd this nonsense in the first place are the ones who are now telling us they are going to save us from it by sacrificing everything that is good about the character. And frankly I would take depressing Spider-Man stories where his character is left intact over lighthearted ones where he is turned into a boring, selfish, and scrubby dolt. I don’t even get why he is Spider-Man anymore in these stories. Yup, I know what the storyline is. Maybe it really must be awful if you can say you enjoyed OMD and not this, though…

I’ve nothing against official translations at all (admittedly much easier and cheaper to get), but I often go for the Japanese stuff since the store closest to me used to import Shonen Gangan and Jump. That way I got to stay miles ahead of my friends. 😉 You have any suggestions? I haven’t read a decent manga in ages. I used to get into the sci-fi-ish stuff like Parasyte. Also, I enjoyed what little I read of Hellsing.

TK, that’s fine, but I think Civil War forewarned me. The whole idea that Tony Stark, could serve as a father figure to Peter stank of impending retardation, then Tony’s abuse of that trust prepared me for the fucking stupid maturity lapse Peter suffered in One More Day. Also, it might have something to do with my having read some of Spidey’s most awful adventures courtesy of Stan Lee and Len Wein in the golden days like Spidey vs. the Gibbon or the Looter or the Grizzly. Or the Hypno Hustler. *shiver* So yeah, I think I might be aware of faaaar shittier stories, unfortunately.

Personally, I’m thinking Moon Knight is the worst series I can recall off the top of my head.

That might be a misunderstanding with Uncanny. Divided We Stand is shitty only because it’s entirely…superfluous. There’s no unified plot so need to lump all those X-books together except to promote them to new readership. Like I said, specifically for Uncanny, the 60s Emma/Cyclops adventure feels pretty ridiculous, but the Kurt/Logan/Piotr plot is a better story. Wasn’t trying to give the impression I thought the entire book was awful, but there are better X-titles right now.

Well, for what it’s worth, I’ve read Gibbon and Grizzly. The thing about old stories like that, in my mind, is that no matter how stupid they may have been, they at least didn’t impact Peter Parker as a character and they also have the value of being something we can all laugh about. I’d much rather read a stupid story like that, which has no affect on the continuity really, than one like OMD which I can’t laugh about in the slightest and which in my opinion has basically ruined the entire book for the foreseeable future.

It’s from Vaughn’s run, but there is a moment like that with Molly (the little girl) that is even better in Whedon’s run. It just was less conversation relevant. 😉

And since you mentioned liking Alan Moore, I have to plug The Killing Joke even though it’s more of a Joker story than a Bats story. The deluxe edition came out really recently too, so it should be all over the place. 🙂

There were a couple of reason why I stopped collecting. Mostly ’cause the comic shops I went to kept changing locations to the point where they were at out-of-the-way locations I couldn’t get to by bus. Eventually, turned to collecting graphic novels (got cheaper than buying individual comics. Just add the price of each comic to bus fare multiplied by trips: $2-$2.50 each book + {$3.15 bus fare x No. of trips} also, before you say why not save with a Buss Pass, I didn’t take the bus enough times to need a Bus Pass.)

Eventually, I either didn’t like where some character’s stories where headed, or lost track of some characters, or publishers simply got rid of some titles all together. Point is I stopped.

Now with all these movies and the Heroes T.V series coming out, I started reading up on what was happening. So far, I’m getting interested in some plots like the GL war and the Ultimate series, and really hating others like Spidey. I just might get back into collecting. :coolegg:

Totally. It really disappointed me. I thought they’d at least drag out the Spider-imposter mystery for a few issues and somehow tie it into the Tracer Killings. I had a better time reading the Marvel Adventures version of Spider-man and I usually hate kiddy comics.

I absolutely ADORE Constantine and it’s only fitting that I finally start reading the comics!

Another boatload for the day. Some promising reads there, especially a GN by Warren Ellis. I don’t know if this is helping anyone get their fix or creating more nerds but I sure hope so.

This week marks the debut of Robinson’s run, and I can’t wait to see where he’s going to lead us.

My all time best comics though would have to be Kingdom Come.
Epic story telling, uber-great artwork from Ross (It’s basically his career’s best achievement so far IMO) and great characterisation centered on my favorite superhero.

If anyone wanted to get into the Superman comics at this point, I would tell them to get All Star Superman, which is written by none other than Grant Morrison (Animal Man, JLA, The Invisibles, Batman R.I.P. etc…) with art by Frank Quitely. A really well written story with equaly matched artwork that portrays an iconic Superman on the verge of death.

Although I buy some one shots or trades from time to time, I unfortunately don’t have as much cash to spend on comics as I would want to, so I mostly stick to this one character.

Anyway, I wanted to find out how he defeated all those cosmic dudes to gain the Infinity gems. It was Thanos’s greatest caper,

IMO, this is the best Batman story told in ages, and while it references decades worth of Batman lore I think it can easily be enjoyed by people who don’t know Batman comics well. Neil Gaiman really nails every character and I am sad he can’t write for Bat books more often.

im reading blackest night this summer 😡 it seems pretty good! and im also starting to read x-factor and i really like it 😀

I was planning on making a Blackest Night thread with downloads if the first issue had been as new reader friendly as the prologue had. JLH as Supergirl seems like bizarre casting to me. Even when she was younger, she didn’t look anything like Kara. I guess she could pull off Linda Supergirl, but she’s been retconned out of existence.

Aparently, the Ms. Marvel from the series going on right now is really Moonstone from Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers! He gave her the title of Ms. Marvel.
The real Ms. Marvel supposedly died when she overused her powers in a battle. But, what doesn’t make sense is that she ends up joining the New Avengers some time later! Rumors are that this Ms. Marvel is actually an *ugh* *rolleyes* alternate reality Ms. Marvel!

One of my favorite Spider-man moments ever was in Peter David’s run of She-Hulk. Her series was canceled and she’s also a Hulk spin-off character though, so definitely doesn’t meet the criteria.

I don’t think it’d be that hard to pull off, really. Get a high profile writer like say, Joss Whedon to do a six issue miniseries with an original female superhero. Using someone well known like that will get the character lots of publicity, and on the heels of that they can launch a new ongoing series with that character with a new writer. Have a popular character show up in her comic for a story arc and fbe sure to show that character on the cover.

I think doing something like that could bring in new fans too, which is something comic companies really need to do.

What about Witchblade? She’s not a spin-off character. The TV series was ok IMO & the movie is also coming out soon!

It’s not necessarily bad for a character to be a spin-off. Wolverine was a spin off from Hulk -of all characters- and not an X book.
Usually spinoffs tend to help characters come to existance into an already established universe in order to help the Hardcore fanboys accept them rather than tear them apart with "whats the point" questions. Then again, fanboys end up doing it anyways!

Well She-Hulk does have her own book last I knew but maybe that’s over now, and Spider-Girl’s only ended recently (which sucks.)

This is true, short of going back to 1964 and getting Stan Lee and the gang to throw their energy behind a new female character, it’d be tough to have someone rise to that level of popularity. Maybe they could try introducing new characters in their movies.

She-Hulk got canceled earlier in this year. =/ I was never really a fan of the character but I really liked the writer on it so I read it sometimes. Awesome page under the cut!

They have "Marvel Divas" now, but I am really annoyed by the concept of that.

I hope the Archie Comics heroes DC is giving ongoings do well, and that it encourages them and maybe Marvel to give new characters a chance. I think both universes could really use some fresh blood, and it gives them a new character to turn into a movie.

Damien’s mother (Talia al Ghul) says that Bruce is his father but it’s never been confirmed. Bruce did a DNA test but then never revealed the results of it. My personal theory is that Damien is not his child, but Bruce wanted to get the kid away from the League of Assassins.

After the Vision has shorted out Iron Man’s armor, the savage beating he gets at the hands of an enraged Captain America brought a smile to my face big time.

I’m also a Transformers Generation One fan, and still have the 4 issue mini series of ‘Transformers Versus G*I*JOE’ from the 1980’s. I’m not a fan of Beast Wars etc, but having grown up with Gen One, I have a fondness for this series.

Marvel UK’s Transformers line was more creative than their American counterparts, with original stories set after the movie, as well as Simon Furman’s signature creation (in his own words) Death’s Head.

The Death’s Head series spans the multitude of Marvel UK’s comic line, appearing in multiple comics (Dragon’s Claw even Captain Britain, just to name a couple.). Death’s Head was ‘killed off’ but brought back as the ‘adventurer Death’s Head II. No longer the flippant ‘Freelance Peacekeeping Agent’, his personality was the dominant one in a mind filled with over 100 personalities in a cyborg originally called Minion and created by AIM. Still… he was flippant as before, probably moreso.

I’ve also been a fan of Dark Horse comics, Knights of the Old Republic comic, set just before the first Knights of the Old Republic game. Good story telling, and even a cross Star Wars comic mini series ‘Vector’ which spans all four of Dark Horse’s Star Wars comic series (Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Times, Rebellion, and Legacy.) over 4000 years.

There was a 12 issue series Marvel did of a character called Nightwatch (Who was introduced earlier in Web of Spider-Man #99), was a good character, just a shame the series was cancelled.

Just today I got via postal order Marvel Zombies, so soon as I read that I’ll post my opinion of it.

I’ve not as familiar with DC as I am with Marvel, what are the ones that aren’t Green?

Those are the other corps. Each color represents the emotion spectrum or something to that extent. In that particular picture:

Yellow = Fear
Blue = Hope
Orange = Avarice
Red = Rage

Then there’s also Indigo, Violet, and Black. Indigo being Compassion & Violet representing Love. Black is just Death for the most part.

Just finished reading the first Marvel Zombies compilation. Not bad, though it didn’t actually have the issue with the first outbreak in it though. Kinda disappointed about that…

Never heard of GrimJack, I’ll check it out when I can.

I found a heap of old comics, numerous collected series, the other day and had a read of the pilot issue for them.

Ghost Rider 2099 of the now defunct Marvel 2099 line. Retelling of the Ghost Rider in a high tech setting. Not bad at all, as both GR2099 and Death’s Head are flippant and violent.

Ghost Rider when it was in the beginning was quite good (The Daniel Ketch version), but towards the end with different artists and the story got ridiculous. Did have two good spinoffs though: The Midnight Sons and Spirits of Vengeance.

Also found some WWE comics… Mankind, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Undertaker in comic form. Art is done quite well, and of course the storylines are ‘out there’ (Just like the WWE storyline’s). Have some gory and bloody moments (Mainly in the Undertaker comics).

Witchblade, Avengelyne, Lady Death and Vampirella were a few more I found, in omnibus forms. Still good reads.

I hate grimdark just for grimdark sake, it takes away from the real grimdark stories and usually the thing they make grimdark don’t fix what’s wrong or boring with the show/book. Kyle and Yost are some of my favorite writers in the business right now, they will probably pull off something better then this. Not that I have any faith in Joe "X-23 WAS A PROSTITUTE NYX IS CANON CAUSE I WROTE IT" Quesada. (Kyle and Yost says she’s not, by the way, because they are awesome).

I think they’re foreshadowing some stuff in X-Force, and Kyle and Yost have talked about how Laura is their baby and they’d rather see her die then let certain writers get a hold of her.

NYX is a pretty terrible miniseries Joe Quesada wrote a few years back about mutant girls in New York. It’s where Kiden was introduced, so it was already sort of canon, but the one-shot cements it.

In it, Laura was a prostitute in New York City (which makes no sense if you’ve read both her minies). Kyle and Yost were asked about it in an interview and they made it pretty clear that Laura was never a prostitute, but obviously Joe Quesada gets the final say. 🙁

The new one-shot pretty much confirms that her being a prostitute is canon and talks more about her prostitution past. It’s also not very well written from what I’ve heard, so you might want to skip it since I know you love Laura too.

I think if I make any super hero women they’ll have a Silver Surfer like skin armor that can be retracked only after saying a magic word in a little known language and concentrating so there will be no way a later writer can have them raped.

(I am pretty sure Rogue only got flying and strength from Ms. Marvel in the comics also, right? Was it even Ms. Marvel’s powers in the cartoon? I feel like they would have justified it some other way instead of bringing that complication to an audience who largely wouldn’t even know who Ms. Marvel is.)

And yes in the cartoon Rogue had the durablity as well, a sentinal punched her into a wall and it made a cartoon indentation of her shape. She has also been shot by rockets and stuff.

Most of the Avengers comics I’ve read are either from the 70’s or Marvel Adventures, but Spidey isn’t that outclassed, is he? I am not positive of the current Avengers line-up but he seems like he could hold his own with Cap, Hawkeye, and Hellcat easily.

I don’t know, maybe I’m biased because all my favorite incarnations of the Justice League have had Batman as a member, but even though he’s nowhere near as powerful as someone like Thor him being on the team doesn’t feel weird to me. I was going to say that his intelligence would probably be a big asset too but then I remembered Hank Pym. He isn’t in the Marvel Adventure Avengers so I forgot him. ; ;

Cap pretty much wiped the floor with Spidey when they fought in Civil War, though, which I think was about accurate. Plus as an avenger Cap is more there for his leadership qualities than anything else.

He’s there in part for his powers, but he’s the ‘heart’ of the group.
The guy that makes the random joke when tensions are at their highest and times are out their worst.

While he may not be as strong as the Hulk, he’s got the a heart the size of.

Even Jay Garrick, who is by far the weakest of the Flashes, is pretty freaking powerful. AND THEY ARE ALL AWESOME I WOULD SUPPORT A JUSTICE LEAGUE WITH EVERY FLASH ON IT IF IT DIDN’T MEAN THE JSA WOULD LOSE JAY.

also the flash rogues gallery is really interesting in spite of the weird weather thing. I love Captain Cold.

in comic news: i picked up this really interesting series called the sword and it is freaking awesome. there was a twist i didn’t really see and the story telling is great. last issue comes out in may. so excited and sad at the same time.

Even Jay Garrick, who is by far the weakest of the Flashes, is pretty freaking powerful. AND THEY ARE ALL AWESOME I WOULD SUPPORT A JUSTICE LEAGUE WITH EVERY FLASH ON IT IF IT DIDN’T MEAN THE JSA WOULD LOSE JAY.

also the flash rogues gallery is really interesting in spite of the weird weather thing. I love Captain Cold.

Well, Marvel occasionally has a legacy character, but it’s rare. TBH, the only example I can think of of one right now is Bucky Cap.

DC is very into legacy characters and families and all that though, which is something I’m into too. I really like the concept that the idea of a hero is so important that it needs to live on after the hero is gone. It gets a little confusing when characters regularly come back, though. Right now, there are three Flashes and one Kid Flash (who was a Flash at one point in time). Barry and Wally have really similar costumes too, which is a bit of a pain in the butt, but thankfully they’re written very differently. Jay’s costume is pretty easily recognizable, though.

If you want to get really confusing, there are two different characters in the DCU named Nightwing that aren’t related to each other in the slightest. Dick Grayson (who is currently Batman) took on the name Nightwing after hearing a story about a Kryptonian hero with that name, so it wasn’t really a big deal, but then that Nightwing showed up in the New Krypton storyline.

I have to confess that I love that comics are so weird and complicated, but it makes it hard to introduce people to stuff. ; ;

I’m sure Bucky Cap is not going to last forever. Steve has had plenty of hiatuses from being Captain America, but Marvel just can’t stand keeping him away too long.

It might actually be Marvel fans though, on the other hand. They tried to pass Spidey on to Ben Reilly, but fan outrage drove the series into the ground until they were forced to reverse it. But then again, that might be related to the incredibly hamhanded and disrespectful way they did it. Hmm, sounds familiar…

One idea I love that I don’t think I’ve seen used at all outside of the movie Mystery of the Batwoman is multiple heroes using the same costume at the same time to throw people off. The hero could be in multiple places at once and it’d really add to the creepy/messing with the bad guys head factor. Obviously this isn’t going to work for Flashes though, since they’re all fast enough to be in multiple places at once and Jay and Wally’s identities aren’t secret.

1. That was the style of the Superman animated series that aired on the WB, notice it’s much cheaper looking than BtAS artwork so when they decided to make the shows have 1 consistent style you can guess which one they went for.

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill do voice acting in that episode too. It doesn’t get much better then that.

Hearing Conroy’s voice and acting style form B:TAS in an anime was surreal at times, I wonder if they got the same voice actor from the japanese dub to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne too? I know there’s this one japanese VO guy who’s hugely prolific and does the dubs for Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, Tigger, & I think Sean Connery.

Free comics day Saturday! I think I’m going to hit up multiple comic shops this yearr since I’m going to have to drive a ways away anyways. The places near me are all pretty small and gaming/comics shops so they probably won’t have anything big going on, but it’ll still be fun, there’ll still be free comics and I’m still hoping that I’ll see something neat.

I might make my way back to that old comic store I visited a few weeks ago to see if anything cool is going on. I visited a second time and there wasn’t anyone else in there like the first visit, and I felt too shy to try chatting up the owner so I just got out of there heh. Haven’t been interested in going back really, because I am a bad person that is bad, but maybe this will make it worth while.

I re-read some Batman this week. I got tagged to make a "50 things you own!" video on Youtube and I pulled out The Long Halloween as one of my items, and decided to re-read it, SO I DID, and then I was like HEY I CAN RE-READ YEAR ONE ALSO, SO I DID

You should re-read Dark Victory too, if you have it! That one has a pretty special place in my heart, probably because I am so into Batfamily stuff.

Aside from my bajillion ongoings, I’m currently reading all of John Ostrander’s run on The Spectre. I’m currently about halfway through. It’s good stuff, but man, the 90’s were so weird for comics. Zatanna’s redesign!

Mr. Terrific is not a free comic but he is so awesome, and I’m so excited to have found him in person that I stuck him in the photo anyways. More pics of him later- I am totally scared to take him out of his package right now because I’m afraid I’ll mess him up somehow. ; ;

Comic places were totally packed. Strangely enough, the only people I saw in costume were dressed as anime characters. I wanted to buy some comics too, but the girl working that I talked too didn’t seem to know anything about comics and she couldn’t tell me if they had what I wanted, and I couldn’t find it on my own. 🙁 Oh well, such a busy day is probably not the best time to shop for that stuff. The people were nice and let me take a ton of comics so I will try and go back and drop some cash on comics there in the future.

I’ve never seen him in stores 🙁 Did they charge way higher than retail price?

I ended up deciding not to go, it’s kind of a weird, paranoid, anti-social reason, but something entered my mind I couldn’t get over. Weirdo 🙁

His t-spheres are attached to him with thin clear plastic so they’ll actually be floating around him, which is awesome, but I’m afraid I’ll break the plastic when I take him out. ; ;

Bet you can still score free comics if you change your mind, Ktulu! Probably way less crowded now too. But if not, I don’t think anything is don’t miss stuff, it is just fun to get free things. They had a free heroclix War Machine too, but I didn’t take it because I wasn’t super into it and they didn’t have a ton. I’d rather save it for people who’d be really psyched to get it. Plus I was not expecting to be allowed to take so many comics and I didn’t want to take advantage. ; ;

The Mouse Guard comic is seriously sturdy, and is a Fraggle Rock comic on the other side.

I was only able to get 3 comics today; DC kids, Fraggle Rock, & that fairy tale legend thing. There was 1 war machine left but I passed on him for the same reasons as you did.

There was some battle game tourney going on with about 5 guys, there where also quite a few little children coming and going as well so it was well attended compared to last year.

John Jackson Miller http://www.farawaypress.com/ was there as well as some local self published author.

John’s a pretty nice guy, he talked mostly about how the he had to develop and write around the artists creative liberties with the character designs i.e. 1 person was meant to be human but the artists made her albino pale with elf ears, as well as all the careful steps he took to make sure the comic synced up with the Kotor video game. He also lamented Hasblow’s cancellation of the comic figure 2 packs with 2 of his characters being the first set to be cut.

These things always vary from place to place, but a lot of that line of toys is hard to find. Gentleman Ghost and Vigilante aren’t common either. The only ubiquitous "shelf warmer" is pretty much Captain Cold.

I heard that a lot of people snap up the free comics from Free Comic Book Day just to sell on eBay, lawl.

And man, I want to trade Targets with you, Tom. Gentlemen Ghost is another of my most sought after figures. My store did have Kid Flash, but since it’s Wally and not Bart I wasn’t persuaded to grab him. Mostly though, there were just piles and piles of Commander Steel. Did your store get Power Girl? If they did I’m totally gonna cry. 😉

Those two packs are supposed to be 30 bucks I think, which is just kinda meh. Usually multi-packs are less than the items within would cost separately so it’s not very alluring.

me too, as i was holding the last 2 pages, and reading all that epilogue, i was seriously hoping for something drastic to happen, but then, nothing, and i was like "thats it?".
im not a comicbookworm, so i havent read many comics, but i can tell a horrible ending when i see one, and crossed had the most horrible ending ive read so far.

also, a friend of mine is obsessed with marvel zombies series of comics, is that any good? i do like zombie movies and games to an extent (and i loved the walking dead, another friend has and i plan to buy for myself), but i dont want to be dissapointed if it has a horrible ending like crossed, though my friend said that while the "main" story was finished, they are still making another series, how can this be possible?

anyway, marvel zombies, recommend or avoid?

the reason i specifically want MZ, is that, its not as complicated as other marvel comics, like ULTIMATE MARVEL, MARVEL THIS, MARVEL THAT, and stuff like that that make my head hurt everytime i try to think about them.

Pieces Knight, the Marvel Zombie comics are pretty decent! I’d actually also suggest Marvel Adventures comics to you? They’re meant to be all-ages, but they’re hilarious, not super kiddy, and not continuity crazy or event plagued.

If you’re okay with reading DC and don’t mind a bit of fanservice, I’d also suggest the current Power Girl ongoing. I am a bit biased when it comes to Power Girl, but it’s well written, fun stories that generally last for about 2-3 issues, and they aren’t at all involved in the big DC universe stories. There are 11 issues out right now, and it’s getting a change in team after issue 12, so it probably won’t stay this way much longer, but it might be up your alley for the time being.

I genuinely do think he’s one of the most talented writers working in comics, but there’s such a clash between what I love in a comic and what he likes to do, and it can be frustrating. Do you know his comic The Boys? It’s Merl’s favorite comic, so I usually download it for him and sometimes I read it. I am not a huge fan of it, because it’s pretty anti-hero, but it’s perhaps my biggest source of inspiration right now.

In the most recent issues he’s introduced a team of heroes called Super-Duper, and it’s made such an impact on me.

They were just instantly so endearing and I wanted so much to root for them and watch them stumble through adventures and cheer them on. But I don’t trust that things are going to end well for them in a comic that employs eating babies as a storytelling device, so I think I’m going to write a comic with the kind of story that I wish Super-Duper would have. It’s not a rip-off, though I haven’t worked on it much- it’s just another lovable losers story that I expect will have a very different outcome. Curse you, Garth Ennis. ; ;

My love of comics actually began with the cartoons, I generally read whatever the library has that looks good. I have colored re-prints of the 1, 3, & 4 vol. of the original TMNT comic, I’d like to read the original batch of X-Men and Spider-man, Yotsuba&! is my favorite manga, I’m reading League of Extraordinary Gentlemen The Black Dossier right now, and I’ve like to read some of the old marvel star wars stories.

I’d say I’m more of a Marvel guy and like the feel of the characters better but I can point out a bunch of DC stories I could recommend as sure reads whereas I can’t think of a single marvel book that’s all that great.

Maybe it’s to trick the readers into a false sense of doom so you’ll think they meet a bad end but they’ll end up victorious at a tweest.
God there are soo many characters and stories I’d love to see re-done, I’m not any good at writing.

My main area is really quite horrible with stocking and even just carrying things. I really need plain metal bookends but no place carries them any more except staples and office max and those are crappy and expensive.
I think the only reason I see so many DC guys is because the stores only have 3 pegs for them so they only put out 1 box at a time so new things get rotated in regularly. Now the big lines like star wars, J.I. Joe, & transfromers it starts out ok,there’s enough restocking of the year’s first waves but they always end up ordering too much of the first waves that I can go form march with the first new sets and have only those out until october when you see like maybe 2 new cases worth and them nothing again until christmas.

I genuinely think DC is better than Marvel right now, though Marvel is improving. I realize that I’m going to sound biased when I say this, since I clearly have a DC preference, but I definitely think Marvel was better maybe 4-5 years ago- DC started to gain an edge again whenever Sinestro Corps War was. It goes back and forth.

I think Marvel has some major problems editorially right now, and I don’t say that only because Joe Quesada is awful. The way events cross over into other books has been really badly handled in recent years, and it’s hurt a lot of their books. One of the big ones for me is Bryan K. Vaughn’s last issue of Runaways- at the end of the book, Iron Man shows up to take the characters into custody, and readers are excited to see what happens next. If you grab the next issue, the Runaways are in New York for no discernible reason and any reader who read the last issue is going to wonder what they missed.

The space between those Runaways issues was somewhat bridged in the Runaways/Young Avengers Civil War tie-in, but plenty of readers aren’t going to realize this, and plenty of the one that do aren’t going to want to buy some tie-in to know what happened in a book they’ve read every issue of. This is also a really troublesome thing to do for a book like Runaways that’s known for having great trade paperback sales-that tie-in isn’t going to be in the trades. I’m sure they made some extra cash getting people to buy that trade in, but it’s short term thinking. Runaways lost a good chunk of readers after they did that, and now the comic is on hiatus, being retooled.

I think Marvel is on a better track now, and hopefully they keep improving, and DC does too. Things are always more fun when both of the big two are at their best. In the mean time, Marvel Adventures comics are as rad as ever!

I just think they’ve been really short-sighted with a lot of stuff lately. I don’t think it’s the fault of anyone but the editors. They’re recognizing that they messed up on some stuff and they’re fixing it, so I do think they’re on the right track. I will keep on dreaming of the day that Quesada gets ousted, though. ^^

Just as another example of what I mean- it was really, really short sighted to make Iron Man into such a colossal jerkbag when he had a major movie in the works. Marvel had to have been seeing the dailies for the movie and I’m sure they expected it to be a hit. The editors should’ve stepped up and said "hey, we can’t make Iron Man a big hated character right when he is about to see a surge in popularity", but they didn’t, and I don’t think they were able to capitalize on the first movie as much as they could’ve.

Now however, again not long before an Iron Man movie is coming out, they have worked to undo everything they messed up with Iron Man and are trying to get him back to being a likable character again. They’re retconning it stupidly, yes, but that’s the way reality gets punched when it comes to retcons, and I’m just pleased they realized their mistake and did what they need to to fix it. I hope Iron Man 2 is able to sell more comics, because you know how much I care about the comics industry.

Right now I’m not reading any ongoings at all because I just got bored with it. I am planning to get back into it with Spectacular Spider-Girl which I’m going to make trips to the comic store to buy because I care so much about it, and this is probably the end of her unless she has miraculously good sales. I’ll probably read some other things maybe too because I’m hoping things are getting better like you say.

I’m still so utterly disgusted with ASM right now though that it makes me not want to read anything Marvel at all to some extent, like I have a hard time caring about anything that happens in their entire universe. The book has gotten unreadable to the point where I can’t stand to read it even for free.

I think overall DC has much better writing and stories right now. Character wise though I love Marvel and I have never really liked DC characters. =/

I’m also going to recommend Secret Six to you. I’m not sure why, other than the fact it is a really well written comic. It’s just a feeling, I guess. I could upload the first issue (or some 52 or Blue Beetle) if you’re in the mood to check anything out.

I think I want to try and find some of the first original stories I’ve already read the first issues of X-Men and Spider-man so I figure I should see some of the origins of the other guys as well.

The Xorn thing is the reason I stopped reading Uncanny X-men, and I still haven’t gone back to it.

I think the only retcon that has made me angrier is OMD, if you can even call that a retcon.

I am really willing to swallow some dumb retcons sometimes (you know how much I love kryptonite poisoning), but there are some I can’t take.

Also: Both Batman and Robin and Red Robin were FANTASTIC this week. I can not stress enough how awesome a comic Batman and Robin is. It is just…everything I think an ongoing comic should be. Many of the villains are new to the Batman-verse and are fantastic, especially Professor Pyg. It has fantastic characterizations- the relationship between Dick and Damien is particularly well done, and it’s probably my favorite mentor/student relationship in comics. The art is wonderful- Frank Quitely (my favorite comic artist) does the art for the first few issues, and although someone else takes over after that, it’s still bright and colorful and really has a sense of action and movement. It tells good, fun, adventure stories that aren’t more than a few issues long, but at the same time builds wonderfully elaborate mysteries and hides clues that are so much fun to try to piece together. At the end of every issue of this comic, I immediately want to read it again and I feel like waiting a month to see what happens next will be an eternity.

I pretty much can’t gush about this series enough, so instead I’ll go ahead and link you guys to the first 12 issues (http://www.mediafire.com/?2ozlzi5ywi2) so that you can download them. There’s definitely some stuff that will be a bit confusing if you’re not familiar with Birds of Prey. But I mean, wiki + asking questions should get you through it fine if it’s something you’re interested in.

I can’t say for sure that the comic won’t tie into Brightest Day more in the future, but I don’t think you’ll have to follow along at all. The reason it has the Brightest Day logo on it is

12 characters come back from the dead at the end of Blackest Night, and one of them (Hawk) is in Birds of Prey now.

I’ll grab Gods and Monsters. I was looking at a list of indie comics coming out in the future a few months back, I should check and see how many of them are out now. I need to branch out with my comics reading more. I just love my superheroes so much. ; ;

Well, Peter David’s Hulk wasn’t really like that at all. Great stories can be told with the character, it’s just that plenty of people are happy to read "hulk smash", and I’m sure it’s a lot easier to write. I would say check out his Hulk run but he was on it forever tbh.

He’s one of my favorite comic characters- I have unwavering loyalty to any member of Young Justice. He had his own good comic series in the late 90’s-early 2000’s and his Adventure Comics issues have been fantastic. Seriously psyched for this.

New comics day today. The first issue of the Zatanna ongoing starts today and I am pretty excited for it! I know Paul Dini has been dying to do this for a long time, and I love some of the art for it I’ve seen. Should be good stuff! The Legion ongoing is premiering too but I’m not sure if I’ll like that or not.

I remember thinking the newest superman movie was OK, but that could be because I have never been a fan of the character in the first place.

With the newest Superman, I was mostly bothered by the fact that it was a sequel to a movie from the 80’s. I really don’t get why they didn’t reboot it. I was really bothered by the love triangle too because I thought Lois’ husband was so likable. I wasn’t a huge Superman fan when it came out either, though. I got converted maybe a year after I saw it. 🙂

I will get to work on this. Let me look for good examples and comics for people to read.

He’s definitely not a win all situations guy- he has failed HUGELY at times, and I’m not just talking about when he died. He also has some glaring weaknesses- kryptonite and magic- and his rogues gallery is designed to exploit this.

The most powerful character in the DC universe is probably The Spectre, but I don’t think he’s written as boring either. His stories are set up more as battles of ethics and fights to hold onto his humanity rather than good vs. evil type stories.

I love old Golden and Silver age comics, but they’re a lot harder to track down than more recent stuff. I wish more stuff like The Black Casebook would get put out.

Am I the only one here reading The Return of Bruce Wayne? Because holy crap the new issue was INSANE. Not what I expected from this series at all but I have no complaints. Can’t wait for the next one. Grant Morrison knows how to end an issue like no other.

On the RDJ front I got a movie from BIGLOTS called eros. I has 3 short sexy stories done by Wong Kar Wai, Steven Soderbergh, & Mchelangelo Antonioni. Last night I flipped through it quickly and it didn’t seem all that sexy but the RDJ story is about him going to a shrink and telling the tail of dreams he has about a mystery sexy lady.

What I got from the random issues I downloaded and parts posted on 4chan All the characters are why different and most of them are killed within the first few pages they’re introduce in by random ninjas. Also most of the cast it replaced by girls, Dr. Doom is Black Panther’s sister, after Doc Doom cut Captain America’s head off a girl took Cap’s place, The Human Torch is Asuka Langly Souryu, I think Sue Storm was named Sioux, Electra killed Dare Devil and immediately felt guilty which gave Girl Cap an opening to cut Electra’s head off with her Shield, and in the end Spider-man, Mary Jane, Black Cat, Girl Captain America, Girl Nick Fury, Asuka Human Torch, and Snikt Bub who looks like Vageta are the only ones left.

I’d be fine with the book being nothing more than Spider-man saying stupid things and BC & MJ going upside his head.

I did like her in Trinity and in the JL/JLU cartoons. I have tried to check out her main book several times and I didn’t care for it at all. I’ve heard Greg Rucka’s run on her book was really good, so I might read that one of these days. Her costume also really bugs me but that’s something silly I can get over.

I honestly do believe that every comic character has the potential to be fun and interesting, and all it’ll take is one good story. So when I say I don’t really like Wonder Woman and Aquaman, it doesn’t mean I won’t give them a chance! Just that it’s hard to get excited about owning their toys.

Kinda funny how manga’s are already in the trade paperback format that they have chapters the same size as floppy magazine issues. I know a great deal of them are actually printed first in mags and anthology books so that’s probably why they still have that page setup.

Man, I miss those days. I used to buy the Sailor Moon comics to go with my manga and I’d use to Sailor Moon pages to trace so I could figure out how to draw the characters better.

Really, floppy issues are a pretty inconvenient formant, though. Can’t be put on a bookshelf, so they’re hard to store and you have to have a rack to display them on in stores. I’m glad DC started up a digital comic program.

It’s basically set in an elseworlds, so once JMS’ run officially starts you shouldn’t need to be too familiar with the character. There’s some continuity stuff in this week’s issue (Wonder Woman 600), but it also has Amanda Conner art and Power Girl in it, so I recommend picking it up. 😉

I have to say that while double or ball jointed elbows & knees are needed you can still get some nice looking poses with one of these guys.

I made a request for vol. 4 of Scott Pilgrim but if it doesn’t get filled soon I’ll just have to go ahead and buy the book myself. Why the library got 2 of vol.1, 2 of vol.2, 3 of vol.3, & 2 of vol.5 but none of 43 is baffling.

I like the whole alternate universe thing, so seeing the roles of the Autobots and Decepticons reversed (as with all mirror/alternate universe stories), this was pretty good.

So far I’ve managed to get them at 2 different libraries. Yopu should have similar luck if you’re in an ok sized town.

Well, delays like that happen all the time. Planetary was delayed for something like 6 years before it finally ended. Delays like this are usually due to problems with part of the creative team- they’re sick, too busy, just not ready to write more of the story, etc.

A hiatus isn’t the same thing. Since Bryan K. Vaughn and Whedon stopped working on Runaways, Marvel has dictated the book’s creative, and if they wanted it published and the scripts/art were this late, they’d probably just replace the slow person. From what I understand, they put the series on hiatus because it’s not profitable enough for them right now and they want to re-work it so that it sells better again.

I could list off a lot of things Marvel did that were responsible for the drop in sales, but it doesn’t really matter. What they’re probably doing is re-tooling the book and we’ll have it back once more regular news for the movie starts coming out. They’ll renumber it (again) and capitalize on the people who are curious about the series because of the movie.

If I was Marvel I would be begging Bryan K. Vaighn to come back to the book, especially since Lost is over now so he probably has more time. That is pretty unlikely, though!

This is amazing.

Shortpacked is great when it’s about toys and comics jokes and not the other stuff. I honestly have no idea where the guy’s coming from or what his views are a lot of the time.

so all in all, this is a very exciting time to be reading x-men and i am really glad that i’ve picked up comics again.

i think it’s because, even though page-wise, it is the biggest volume, the time-span of the story in this volume is the shortest out of all of them (it feels like this anyway)

That said, i’m hoping to be proven wrong – the trailers so far look amazing. Hopefully Cera will be able to step outside his comfort zone and deliver.

Personally I torrent them (i use Demonoid, but there are dedicated comic trackers out there) and use ComicRack (http://comicrack.cyolito.com/) on my PC and Droid Comic Viewer (http://www.robotcomics.net/android-comic-viewer/) on my phone to read them.

Yeah, as do I, but Demoniod won’t update my ratio (it’s stuck at .8) when I KNOW it should be at 1.00-2.00.

Also, since it is a good idea to pay for the series you enjoy so that they will continue, if you can’t make it to a nearby comics shop, try mailordercomics.com. They’ve got a great system set up and you save money compared to buying at the comics shop anyway.

EDIT: Man, you may feel that windows image viewer is OK, but I guarantee if you try CDisplayEX, you will never go back.

For downloading, I mostly use http://thelongbox.net. Marvel isn’t allowed to be posted there, though. If you know what issue you’re after usually doing a site search on google for mediafire or rapidshare will find you what you’re looking for.

I prefer not to torrent comics unless I’m getting a bunch of stuff because it’s just simpler to directly download the issue. On Wednesdays and Thursdays they usually show up on the longbox before anywhere else that I know of anyways.

Glad to be enjoying something recent, though.

I really don’t think single issues are a very good format, though. I have so many floppy issues but it’s a pain in the butt to use them for re-reading. I should probably look into DC’s digital comics service and see if it’d be something that I’d be interested in.

I like comic shops and I like the serial storytelling format but I’d rather sit down with a couple volumes of a trade then a bunch of issues of something any day.

First the Power of Love sword’s heart pummel looks like Scott’s ball sack on the cover.

I was alright with the slow start; I liked how as Scott tried to get with it he realized things had changed while he was out of it.

Steven Stills being gay was surprising but it didn’t bother me I think because it’s not random or anything and there was a bit of set up to it. Plus why he never just left Julie Powers and to a stab at wooing Kim Pine was beyond me.

Speaking of Kim I was sad she didn’t get to be part of the finale. Sure she had a shadow spirit thing in the background but it would have been nice to have her there after going through so much of the evil exes stuff.

The dream of angel Ramona impaling Scott and then all his evil exes becoming monsters and eating him gave me ‘nam flashbacks to End of Evangelion :,(

The last half was rather too quick.
It???s not that I was disappointed with the explanations of the league, Gideon, Ramona, subspace, & everything it???s just that so much of it was crammed into so little space that it felt more like summarizing than a natural exposition.

But I did like the explanations such as Ramona just going back to her dad???s and while wanting to contact someone just forgot because of internet and dvd watching, or how the league was just a craig???s list rant and it turned out a bunch of people felt the same way.

One thing I wish was a little clearer and had more of the characters do character stuff off of was what Scott ultimately needed to do and learned.
I know he stopped running away from his problems like Kim Pine said but what was his main flaw that he needed to fix?
I know both he and Gideon have the same problems and that Scott figured that out but what was it?
Kim- Scott didn???t tell her that he was moving away.
Envy- We never got the whole story of.
Knives- Didn???t take control of things from the start to keep her from getting hurt. Then didn???t break it off with her soon enough.
Ramona- 2 timing her and Knives plus they both have baggage.

I felt that’s what the book was going for too. It just would have been nice to have it defined a bit clearer. Not simply become we’re dumb but because having the characters say it lets us know what they’re thinking and what ultimately will happen to them.

yeah the whole thing seemed to make the reader figure a lot out on their own
which i don’t usually mind
but the previous pilgrim books didn’t really do this. they just said ‘we’ll give you answers later on in the story, just stick with us’

In the original version they’d already started coloring it white. I’ve had that image as a huge poster since I was probably 7-8 years old. It’s made of win. Have another Jim Lee poster with X-Men villains to go with it as well. Lots more characters on that one.

What’s considered to be the definitive Storm stories? She was pretty much my first love in the fox kids cartoon and I was more than disappointed with Halle Berry completely changing personalities form movie to movie.

This is by far the heaviest comic, content wise, that exists out there today IMO.

Very plot driven, very good overall.

But what has irritated me over the years is Marvel. They keep killing people off, bringing them back, and getting them married and then divorced or widowed. The "One More Day’ Saga pretty much made me quit reading Spider-man. I thought their marriage was great, and the lame plot they used to break them up pissed me off.

The next thing that irritated me was the recent sojourn into politics that Marvel has done during the 2008 election. I read comics to escape reality, not get more involved. The whole damned Marvel Universe seemed to kiss Obama’s ass during the last two years and it has pissed me off. Funny though how they recently got rid of Obama during the secret skrull invasion. Claiming he was a skrull as well.

Other then that I am glad to see Storm is married. Although i wonder how long it will last.

Comics used to be super racist in general, really. Even after non-white superheroes were introduced it was still really bad for a while. I wish I had some good pages on hand for examples, but I don’t.

With pretty much every other character in anime filler episode Limbo she was one of the few who actually got some development. Course, it helps she’s adorable and charismatic as all hell.

I have no other comments since I pretty much only watch Smallville if they’re having an awesome character appearing on it. TV show Chloe dresses cuter than that, but clothes are usually not that great in comics and what really matters is that she’s well written. Looking forward to seeing her show up.

Dammit why couldn’t Reynolds do Deadpool before Green Lantern? I don’t want to wait for 3 GL movies before getting Deadpool.

Reynolds was already in Blade 3 before he was Deadpool and Chris Evens was already The Human Torch, Lucas Lee, & Casey Jones before he was Captain America.

It seems like executives really like to give parts to the same couple of people. Hollywood can be pretty awful. I’m always stunned when I listen to commentaries on movies and people are talking about how for one part, the studio will just give them a list of names and they pretty much had to cast off that. They need their ~star~ and everything.

I tend to think most actors are overpaid in terms of how many butts they actually put in theater seats. Very few actors have huge followings of people that will go see any movie they’re in regardless of how good it looks. A lot of famous names are "box office poison" too. I guess being famous means you get to do the talk show circuit to promote the movie, but you really don’t have to be very famous to do that.

Maybe I’m biased in this department because I feel like in superhero movies, the movie’s big draw should be a superhero, and not a movie star. I’m sure Ryan Reynolds will do a perfectly good job as Hal, and I hope Chris Evans is good as Cap- I actually like Chris Evans a lot, even though I think it’s weird casting- I just get frustrated by the way things continue to be done with these movies. Blake Lively as Carol Ferris. ; ;

And yeah Rob, Variety confirmed Justin Timberlake was up for the part, and they’re really reliable.

That’s funny seeing as how I only ever see bad movies based on who’s in then is when it’s the more weirder guys like Tim Curry or Garry Oldman or Christopher Lee or Alan Rickman. It also helps if they have awesome voices like Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones. Why Does John Rhys-Davies always take every sci-fi tv role he’s given? THey couldn’t be paying him all that much.

Probably the biggest thing I fear in adaptations is the what they do to the female characters.
