Hey guys. I recently decided to play through the Final Fantasy games in roman numeral order, and was wondering which FFIV to get. There’s FF2 for the SNES (actually FFIV of course), but there’s also the PS version and a GBA version. There’s also one coming out for the DS. I was wondering which version is the closest to the original Japanese version, and which one you would suggest that I play.

If you haven’t played it before you might as well go with the DS version. There is no real reason to play the originals when you can play the slightly superior remake.

you didnt answer the question.

If you want the closest to the original, go with the PS1 release, load times suck but its the closest to the original japanese version.

I think the original Japanese release is.

If it all possible, you want to play a version that uses the "Hardtype" model — you know it by whether or not dark knight Cecil has access to the Dark Shock ability that allows him to sacrifice life to damage enemies and in general the battles will be way more difficult. (Is the Advance version based on hardtype?)

i own the gba version, and yes, cecil can use this command (called DARK).

i suggest you play the GBA version, or wait for the remake in july.

I’d just recommend the DS version, probably the best overall, each remake gets slightly better I think. 🙂

I’d agree with Dragonsoul, I bravely attempted to play the PS 1 version of V and VI, I walked away from the experience battered and depressed. When playing any Final Fantasy older then VII, use something portable, because after a while it becomes a chore to go to your TV and play.

Final Fantasy VI is my favorite game, but when I had the PS 1 version I didn’t play too much of it. And I remember that I didn’t play much of Final Fantasy V. I’m not sure why but maybe it was a loading times issue? I beat Final Fantasy VI again on March 10th 2006, the original Usa Snes version. It took 51 hours for a nearly 100% completion rate. The only thing I missed was that some of the characters didn’t have one spell, one of the final ones that levels up one point at a time, maybe it was Drain. The game was insane, it destroys every other rpg game I’ve ever played! 🙂

This thread seems to have served its purpose and appears to be more or less degenerating into something not really related to its topic. I think the original question has been answered thoroughly, so I’m gonna close it.
