If you want to draw magic instead of using GF refinery abilities (which is a bit tedious. Having too much good magic also makes battles a bit too easy so don’t be afraid to spend even junctioned magic at times.) have high magic attribute/stat with the character that uses draw (you can exchange magic later). That way you put the "magic" GF to character that has the highest magic stat.
Also, most girls have magic limit breaks and all guys rather have physical limit breaks, so high strength fits the latter. But it’s as personal/tactical as you want. I used Quezacotl on Squall and Shiva on Quistis my first time. On my err… try x I just wanted to beat the game in the most modest time and level possible. Not that level works the same way in ff8. If the game gets too hard you get more magic (and run when loosing) not beat more beasts because they level up with you and you get money from salary depending on seed level anyway (well… and by selling stuff).
You just ask for more… Might I ask how far have you gotten so I don’t specify too many spoilers. You might also tell me which GFs you have if you run out of ideas.
[edit]: Oh, Moonlapse Vertigo is right. And if I may add to it: Use GF learning screen. Have them learn Mag-j or Mag+20% and similar if you like/need to draw. Mag-RF abilities are useful (like T Mag-RF) if you don’t. Oh, and Card ability is very useful if you aren’t very good at the card game or if you want Quezacotl to learn Card Mod, which is very useful.
It’s not the learning abilities that I want to know. I want to know which GF’s Squall should use, which GF’s Zell should use, etc. So that the GF’s are spread equally. Like Squall should have Ifrit junctioned, because Ifrit has Str+%20, etc. I think it’s a pain to go through all the GF’s. I always end up junctioning GF’s to the wrong people. Like last time, I junctioned Cerberus and Pandemona (both have Spd+%20) on the same character. That’s not good.
Unbeginning: I just got to Esthar. I picked up Solomon’s Ring (to get Doomtrain), but I don’t have enough Malboro tentacles. I need to find those creatures, but I guess I could do that later. Oh, I’ve got all GF’s you can get at this point, except for Odin. I don’t want him to defeat enemies from which I want to draw.
You’ll gonna have to give me some time to think of combination without tricks and I have two tests ahead of me so I wont be able to help you very soon.
Luckily for you, a wonderful FAQ creator by the name of geekyboyzero has answered that question to a great extent.
What he’s done is basically found a nice combination of GFs for three of your characters (your active party).
I had this same question a while back, and he provides a very nice setup.
His guide even shows optimal setups as you progress through the discs. (i.e. A setup for beginning of disc 1, end of disc 1, beginning of disc 2, after you get (insert name) GF…etc.)
Here you go:

Noobinabox: I can’t believe I missed that FAQ. Thanks for the link, man.
I seems that I unlearned Siren’s Treatment ability. Is there any way I can get it back?
Edit:
Alright, I found it out. It is as follows.
Forbid Med-RF (1:2) Megalixir
ST Med-RF (1:20) Remedy
Supt Mag-RF (1:100) Esuna
Just in case you’re confused, the bottom example means you would need 100 Esuna to refine into 1 Med Kit.
I haven’t tested to confirm this but it came from gamefaqs so I assume it’s reliable.
And thanks for going trough the trouble for finding it, Ketevan.
Sucks for a no-level up game. I’ll probably end up "cheating" on my no-level up by leveling up Edea a lot while she has control of Siren and Ifrit.
I haven’t heard of such a thing before but if you want to level her up, go ahead. It shouldn’t take long to reach level 12.

No problem, it wasn’t much trouble really. =)
Thanks for the clarification.

How do you do that? Doesn’t everybody gain EXP even if they don’t participate in a battle?

Yeah, especially when fighting outside Esthar, :).
Nope, if they’re dead they don’t get exp. I’m not sure about whether or not a petrified character gets exp either.
I should have leveled up Ifrit when I had seifer in my party. But I forgot.
Ifrit’s Ammo RF is only available at level 10 I think. That’s why they say it’s impossible to get Squall’s Lionheart weapon if you play a "true" no-level up game. However, I just do the no-level up game for shorter fights and easier gameplay. So when I get control of Edea, I’m gonna level up like no other.
squall is great with ifrit.
i equip quetzecotl (sp) to zell or irvine.
shiva to quisty or selphie.
carbuncle to squall too, for counter attack.
pandemona to selphie.
siren to rinoa for magic.
general idea? :"D

This build is near perfect.
This build is near perfect.
Damn, that is.
My party is shamed
Yeah, my party is shamed, too.
I played around, and noticed that it’s kinda cheap to use Darkside, Counter, and Drain in ST-ATK. Auto hits, auto heals, and massive damage from Darkside. GG.
There’s times when you see squall attack 3 times in a row, without standing still, ever. It PWNS.
But still, Darkside does 3x damage while Berserk does only 1.5x.
Nope. Not sure if Mug works – after all, berserk is the regular attack. Never actually paid attention to it O_o.
So using mad rush isn’t so beneficial, unless your other two chars can keep up with squall’s damage. There might be a problem which I never ran into: low HP.
Since Darkside does 1/10 max HP damage to self, and it applies it AFTER the initial attack + drain, so it possibly can kill a char with less than 10% of his/her max HP. #EDIT: Again, haven’t tested if Darkside can kill the user. I’ll try it ASAP.#
And for the Renzokuken fans: No, it doesn’t heal Squall when you do a Limit Break, and Darkside is a neat way of doing that (controlled) damage to self to get that critical status.
I tried having 100% defense to zerk, but it doesn’t work. Also, beware of the undead, because your leech is just a normal drain – it damages yourself.
I suggest using something else against those pesky undeads, eg. magic.
Ever since I junctioned those all, Squall has never been KO’d after, and I kept him in low HP for a very long time.
One could use the Drain ST-Atk for an easy heal if HP gets *too* low, like <150-200. Counter can get annoying, too, if you’re trying to Mug something specific, like Str Ups from Raijin. Counter killed him with one hit before i could do anything with a char of mine, and so did seifer at disc 1.
EDIT v2: Kinda strange that I haven’t seen this in a guide/FAQ/whatever, I just *can’t* be the only one to use/find this…
EDIT v3: Prev. post reminded me. Drain ST-Atk is sort of some Berserk ”immunity”, unless the target is something you can’t drain/undead. eg. Tonberries can’t be drained from, but that’s not a problem, since they don’t cast Zerk ^_^
EDIT v4: CBA to make a new topic, but I don’t know how useful/known the following is: Have a character with 100% absorb to some element, or 2x 50%.
One other has 100% to that element absorbed, it his/her Ele-Atk.
For the lazy/tired ones:
Have eg. Squall with 100 Blizzaga and Blizzard/Blizzara on Elemental Defense.
Have eg. Irvine with 100 Blizzaga on his Elemental Attack.
In case of unwanted low HP, shoot Squall with Irvine.
Great if you get silenced, and can’t heal/remove silence. It’s a possible ”Recover”, If the attacker does more damage than the receiver has HP.
EDIT v5: (sigh) Darkside Drain only heals the base damage. Let’s say that a Darkside attack does 6000 damage. It heals only the base, which is exactly 2000.
If you Darkside/Counter with Squall, remember to use the almighty trigger, too. With it, Squall does 4.5x base damage, since the base damage + trigger = 1.5 * 3 = 4.5.
I get a lot of 9000+ hits with Squall, using Punishment and 150ish Str. Other chars average at 600 (trying to fix that)
Which brings me to my next question: Where to find some Adamantoise? Disc 2, Mobile Garden. Also, I need pulse ammo.
So, Elnoyle spawn is needed, too.
So, Elnoyle spawn is needed, too.
Try the beach near Dollet. It might take ages for Adamantoises to show, but they will eventually. Some people say they appear more often on the Long Horn Island nearby, but I never really noticed any difference myself.
You won’t find Elnoyles anywhere on disc 2, so your best bet is to play cards and mod 10 Elnoyle cards into an Energy Crystal, or if you’re a high enough level, look for Ruby Dragons in a Centra forest, they might drop them.
