The PC version censored some of the stronger profanity (ironic when you consider that Eidos was actually targeted by parents’ groups about the game’s content), and also even tones down a bit of the innuendo ("I’ll smash it."), but other than that, things were left generally intact.
No other FF game was like this. Of course, in FFVI, we got stuff like "son of a submariner." FFVIII’s said to have some strong profanity on the demo version, which would have gotten an MA if released in that form. But, really, compared to FFVII, none of other FF games really have all that much profanity, and certainly not a lot of the other stuff either. Thoughts?
ALOT!!
In a mature world you need to have things that are considered to be mature too. So it all was about Dio, about cross-dressing, about having perverted thoughts and what not. FFVII wasn`t a game for children. As we grow up, FF is growing up along us, that`s what I think.
I think, also, we have to consider that Square may have faced a backlash after FFVII came out, and so felt the need to tone down such elements in future games.
Of course, I think you may get an argument from some here as to whether or not any FFVII character has a personality that could be described as "deep."
But their are also themes in FFVII that make almost as bad as FFXII. Mainly the Honeybee Inn/ Don Corneo. Also the fact that Yuffie is 16 in the game yet she also barely wears something that covers herself….
Just my two cents worth.
Hee… you’re right. Though there were "kill" and "hate"
But their are also themes in FFVII that make almost as bad as FFXII. Mainly the Honeybee Inn/ Don Corneo.
Oh, definitely. That guy was a total perv.
VII has a large sex reference in the form of the Pimp lord Don Corneo, not only does he run a place were woman volunterily have sex with him, but if he chooses Cloud, you get to choose some, uh, rather stupid responses, and don’t forget when the party is threating to do rather colourfull things to his small penis. The only scene I can think of from IX is the scene where Zidane accidentily *cough*intenionally*cough* places his hand on Garnet’s ass, and of course, there’s the lake scene from X
It isn’t, at least not in the Playstation version. Both "damn" and "shit" are regularly used censored. The PC version censors all instances of "shit," but keeps some other profanities intact.
You can gag over it all you want, it isn’t exactly explicit 😉
I’m not breaking it out to check, so not worth the effort. If you would like to win this point, you are welcome to, mi amigo.
I’m not specifically in favour or against swearing in games, but in cases where a character can be predominantly defined by three major factors (actions a la plot, interaction a la characters, and dialogue) I am much more impressed when all three coincide. That is, when the dialogue of a character feels realistic according to the current scenario, it promotes the illusion that this character could be real, in a sense anchoring the characterization.
If Cid would have said "Dang and blast it all!" when the Tiny Bronco went down, I’d snap out of it and remember how silly it all seems. It ain’t right.
Cid and Barret were two characters to whom swearing seemed to fit, given their background, character interaction and plot purpose. I can’t think of anyone in later FFs of which the same can be said (not so familiar with older ones).
Also, Cid had a never-extinguishing cigar. +1 to topic title.
As some have said, Zidane does due a slight bit of swearing, and I can see how it fits his character. As for the rest of the Tantalus gang, they may have been rogues and thieves of sorts, but they were all about maintaining appearances…
But you have to realise that FFVII is a very mature game, adult themes, violence, sexual references, coarse language, this game basically has it all.
The worst you get in other games is say, Selphie / Ashe with their mini-skirts, or Edea / Lulu with the 90% exposed rack.
There are many parts in VII that suggest it was much more mature than it actually let on:-
– Aerith’s ‘One-Date’ deal with her ‘body-guard’ Cloud.
– Reno and Rude discussing who they like (Gongaga).
– The fact that the whole game is based around a political war with the ShinRa.
– You can find ‘Orthapedal Undergarments’ in Tifa’s room during Clouds flashback in Kalm!
– A main character dies, an occurance that hasn’t been made nearly as dramatic since FFII (the ACTUAL II, with Firion, Maria, Guy, Leon, Ricard, Josef, Gordon, etc.) In which 4 characters die.
– Hojo’s attempt to ‘breed’ Nanaki (Red XIII) with Aerith.
– The slaughter of the Cetra.
There are a lot of occurances in this game that, although not immediately recognisable, suggest that the game is a very mature game, not like it’s softer prequels like IV and V.
Oh, plus there’s Barret’s attitude, Cid’s swearing, Cloud’s deep emotionally fragile state, Yuffie’s kleptomania (stealing addiction), Cait Sith’s back-stabbing nature, Aerith’s quiet slightly depressing view on life, Nanaki’s life story, Vincent’s battle to forgive himself, Sephiroth’s addiction to power, and of course, Tifa’s MASSIVE jugs lol.
Just about every character, main or secondary, has a quirk or a feature that is symbollically mature or as you said ‘naughty’.
But maybe I’m reading too much into it…
At Doma Castle, essentially all of the citizens living there except for Cyan and the guard standing next to him die from the poison in the river, including the king and all of Cyan’s family.
When you agree to talk peace to the espers for the empire, you get well acquainted with General Leo, and he reveals his humanity to a greater extent than you knew before. Further, you meet all of the espers on top of the mountain and convince them to make peace with the empire and the rest of humankind. When you return to meet General Leo with the espers, Kefka appears and kills all of the espers and General Leo viciously and instantly, taunting them all the while. So many characters that you had just been introduced to just die immediately; that’s far more mature than the rather well-deserved deaths of many of the people Sephiroth leaves dead in his wake.
And after that, Kefka kills thousands of people and practically destroys the entire world; as you explore the world afterwards, you see that in one town the entire population consists of orphaned children, and nobody else in the world seems to take any enjoyment out of life. The mass-extinction of the Cetra is only talked about from a historical point of view in FFVII, whereas you actually see the apocalypse that kills so many people in FFVI.
So in respect to death and violence, FFVII is nothing new at all. And really, it isn’t any more violent than FFVIII, FFIX, or FFX. But as I mentioned before, the urban slum setting of FFVII explains the more common use of expletives and sexual undertones.
ALOT!!
Dude! No!
On the subject of profanity, what about the BASTARD SWORD in XII?
Hey Agent0042, I read some of your walkthroughs on FFShrine, nice work!
Watch also for my next guides — FFVII PC/Playstation Script Differences and FFXII Speed Run. Actually, the former one is already available at http://agent0042.fileburst.com/pcplyfaq.txt but I haven’t quite finalized it yet for uploading to GameFAQs.
