I’ve already collected 13 stars, and have been very, very impressed with the game up to this point. It took a little bit of time to deal with the camera and the gravity’s effect on moving Mario around on screen. The level design has been great, not yet superb; although the one I’m on right now is just stunning. The orchestrated music feels like it should be in every big game from here on out because I can’t live without it now. And gameplay is top notch so far.
Anyone else, please feel free to share your thoughts about the game. Again, try to warn if you must talk about spoilers.
i don’t think it’s as good as 64 definitely better than sunshine
i miss belly flop certainly don’t miss fludd
,,,
better than ps3 xbox 360 combined power
92 or so stars me have so far
my impresisons mirror ash’s, though at the moment I’d say it’s about equal to 64 if not slightly better.
Still, it’s by no means as much of a radical change as I kinda thought it might be – it really is just SM64 in Space. Dissapointing, but still good.
i hate how luigi sounds when he does he stuff
it seems easier to me as him since the traction stuff doesn’t really matter much to me and like jump higher and run faster
i wouldn’t buy super luigi galaxy fyi

Yeah that’s pretty much a big spoiler.
Controls can get kind of weird sometimes too and I had this glitch with a goomba. I jumped over one and did a ground pound type thing but went through him. After that I couldn’t touch him at all, just walked through him. It could see me and all because he kept trying to charge into me but kept going through me.

I like to dance.
Now I am like…
…
better than ps3 xbox 360
haha
It was really difficult at first, but then I realized that there was more than 100 purple coins on the Luigi thing. I must have tried 20 times to collect every single coin surrounding me at first. But it still took me another 10 minutes to just run around the whole map.
Up to 91 stars now. Played for about two hours and only managed about 10 stars to the difficulty is definately at a level that I like.
I realized that pretty quickly but it still took so looong and jumping can often be very awkard in 3d mario games (It’s been 11 years since SM64 and the jumping still hasn’t been fixed…) so that didn’t help.
I’m at 80 stars. I’ve still got a healthy mix of difficultly left with my stars – some are "lol that’s it?" easy and others are frustrating, though that Luigi level is by far the hardest in the game so far.

I think the awkwardness of jumping in Mario 3-D games, moreso in this one, has to do with the gravity/camera angle effect. I’m up to 114 stars now, and I still haven’t gotten used to which way I need to move if Mario is upside down or vertical. It takes me a half second or so sometimes to adjust still. 🙁
6 stars! Yeah!
At times it’s as easy as… Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, possibly the easiest game I’ve ever played… but at other times it definitley is Yoshi’s Island difficult, and then only one or two times it gets Zelda II difficult.
(96 stars!~)
I played the part where you’re on a little floating island, there are a few towering flowers, a few piranha plants and a crystal that shatters to give me a bee mushroom. I hop on a flower, get whipped above, get some more crystals, jump and find an orange star and fly across to another floating island where I can walk on the honey comb walls. From there does the game get fun or did I just play the bad example of it? I was feeling kinda board, everything looked too Nick Jr./PBS colorful and gay, Mario moved to slow and the game made little use of the motion by doing a few spins. I felt as if I might as well just push a button. I don’t mean to be too hard on this game, I just didn’t find it entertaining. And when I get my Wii, so far I just don’t see myself getting this game.
I’d question your sanity if you didn’t 🙂
Lulz so that means im getting zelda 😀
My point in pointing this out is, don’t let me influence your choice. I was talking to someone who’s as big a Zelda fan as I am, and to whom I feel comfortable making cheeky remarks.
You should make your choice on your own.
It’s the best Mario game I’ve played, plain and simple.
SOMETHING ABOUT THE FREEDOM IN MARIO 64 MAN JUST CAN’T BE BEAT I AM A BIG FAN OF THE GAME BUT HAVING STARS YOU CAN ONLY GET IF YOU CHOOSE MAN I LIKE FOR THE MOST PART WHERE YOU CAN RACE THE PENGUIN OR GO FOR 8 COINS OR WALL JUMPING TO THE TOP IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN I AM SURE YOU DO PROFESSOR PLEASE DON’T BE SAD WITH A PSP ON YOUR FACE I AM SURE THE DS IS MUCH BETTER AND YOU ARE SURE TOO DO LADIES PLAY DUCK HUNT WITH YOU?
I’m not sure exactly what levle you were on, but it sounds like the second galaxy (Honeycomb or something), which ties with the other bee-level (Goldleaf) as my least favorite in the game. They’re boring. They’re not particuarly challenging. They’re not particularly fun.
I’m on my "second" playthrough as I’ve gotten all 120 stars. There are soooooo many better moments than what you were unfortuante enough to try.
Since you play FFXI still (god knows why :P), I’ll make an analogy: what you played was the equivalent of Valkurm Dunes. On a bad day.
Also, Ash, I agree, in the end I think SM64 was better, it felt more open and with a little more exploration. Galaxy doesn’t quite live up to that but it has lots of super fun moments. There are certainly some levels I can’t wait to get to on my second time through. But, the last time I played SM64 was a looooong time ago so I don’t know if my opinion is skewed due to how much more amazingly fun and difficult games seemed back then (playing through OoT recently made me see how much less amazing the game is compared to how it was the first time around – good, but not amazing).
And, in the end, Galaxy is far and away the best Wii title at the moment.
For instance, when I first played through it it took me and my brother over an hour scouring the Kokiri village place looking for the Kokiri sword, until we finally realized that hole in the wall was something we could crawl through. Nowadays, if I play through, I just go and get the sword and go on with things.
And since I’m no longer figuring things out and spending toooons of time doing so, the game is more going through the motions and also seems less massive than it used to.
My work here is done *bows*
The sad thing is though, I could’ve had the collector’s guide for free if I had just pre-ordered the damn game. Now, I’ve never EVER pre-ordered a game and I’m sure I never will so I never thought to pre-order it. I live in a small town in Australia and I have never seen a game nor console go out of stock so pre-ordering isn’t all that vital.
What a shame :(. Oh well, I hope Big W actually HAS the Collector’s guides because I don’t feel like going to EB games and dealing with the buttheads there.
it is pretty great.
also: revived
I mean, imo, its levels are awful =/
But I’m probably in quite a small camp too when I feel that, along with SMB3, Galaxy is the best in the series.
Why? They’re extremely linear and boring levels. You just hop small, uninteresting planets, each with some sort of enemy of gimmick, until you reach the end. There’s no sense of exploration at all. The entire time I just wanted to go run around somewhere but the best the game allowed me was to simply follow the jump stars.
Another small issue for me is that fire mario is a timed power. I thought that was pretty dumb. He just felt incredibly crappy to use and it was pretty hard to aim with him as well.
Another issue I have is that the game is super easy save for probably 5 stars.
In my opinion, Sunshine was much more enjoyable because you didn’t feel trapped the entire time. Galaxy feels like Super Mario Bros. with some 3D slapped on.
The exploration in Mario64 was great for a while (like when exploring Mario’s new moves). But it didn’t add much to the gameplay. You still had to go from point A to B, but had the "choice" to get lost in unecessary parts of the level that were irrelevent to the current "star" objective.
Mario Galaxy, if anything, feels a lot more like SMB3 or SM World, which is a big plus for me. I prefer my platform games to feel like platform games. Not like adventure games.

Great… A Super Mario game that feels like THE Super Mario game… Gosh!! And I thought Super Mario Galaxy was going to play like Oblivion!!!
Because 2D and 3D Mario games are the exact same things.
Yet we all know how stupid some complains are when they take a 2D franchise and put it into 3D. The most popular one being that the devs rarely manage to capture the feel of the old 2D classics. Now they succeeded to some degree and people still complain?
People should try to know what they really want.

You’re suggesting I am one of those people however I never said I was.
I wanted a new 3D Mario game similar to the feel of SM64. Instead, I got a new 3D Mario game similar to the feel of SMB3. I wanted the option to go wandering, get to the point I need to get to by another route and maybe find a hidden star some time (which I could a few times in Galaxy). My main issue is how linear a large amount of the levels are, really.
The biggest offenders of being super-linear were the in-space levels that required I traverse small platforms and planets while doing any major movement via pull/jump stars (which, as you know, does not allow any free roaming). These weren’t the only levels that had me do this, however.
I will say though, not all the levels in Galaxy were terrible. The batch of galaxies found in the Garden observatory are some of my favourite levels out of any 3D Mario game. I don’t know why really, I just really liked them.
All of the Trial Galaxies type levels were fun too, offering a nice challenge while being fun at the same time. There are a couple others I enjoyed scattered throughout the game but I can’t for the life of me remember which they were. I didn’t really like any levels with costumes, though.
Anyway, my point is:
2D Mario games are not the same as 3D Mario games. I wasn’t expecting this type of gameplay which I think is ultimately why I was disappointed with Galaxy.
I think I might give it another chance and play through it again some time. I found myself really enjoying the last 20~ stars.
jftr, it is 2 in the morning and I had a lot of trouble making sense out of what my brain was telling me D;. I’ll check in the morning for awkward sentences.
I respect your opinion about the 3D mario games.
I really liked Mario 64. But not for its level designs. I enjoyed the freedom of movement and the many intuitive moves available for Mario. The controls were outstanding, groundbreaking, and are still the standards for current gen 3D third person games.
What i came to realise by playing Sunshine though, is that I prefer my platformer levels to be linear. To require that I get better at them, via mastering the controls and knowing the levels by heart. What I am referring to here are the "special" levels from Sunshine. These were my favorite levels in the game, and I thought it was great to see Nintendo could come back to the basis of what is a Mario level, and do it in 3D. These levels could be really hard, yet I never grew tired of trying again. If there is anything that I would have chenged in Galaxy, would have been the difficulty. Not the level design, since it’s reminiscent of those "special" levels from Sunshine, and these are my all time favorite 3D Mario levels.
A platformer for me is level based. As I said, if I want free roaming, I’ll take a Zelda.
I may be among the few in this camp, but that’s what a platformer game is to me.
Well, I am playing through Galaxy again as Luigi. Has anybody got the 121st star yet?

Got it for both Mario and Luigi.
And you are one of the very few who doesn’t find Galaxy great. I agree with whoever said earlier it’s up there with Super Mario Bros. 3, but I would probably put it just ahead by a slight bit.
