Placebo:
Placebo are an alternative rock band consisting of Brian Molko (vocals, guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (bass). The band was founded when former Luxembourg schoolmates Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal – who never actually spoke to each other – met by accident at South Kensington tube station in 1994. Molko invited Olsdal to one of his gigs and Olsdal was impressed by Molko’s vocals so they agreed on forming a band. The singles "Nancy Boy", from Placebo (1996), and "Pure Morning", from Without You I’m Nothing (1998), were the peak of their British success, both charting in the top ten.
vs

Folds’ musical career started to get off the ground in the late ’80s, as bassist for band Majosha, after playing bass and piano at Pinehurst, in a group known as the "Caroliners" with cohort Millard Powell in 1985-1987; for the Calayer and after working as but he is best known for his later work as the frontman and pianist of Ben Folds Five and as a solo artist. Their music is a combination of rock, psychedelia, and more recently metal. The main songwriter and founder of the band, Steven Wilson, once commented: "I like so many different types of things, and they all go into the melting pot, if you like, that produces the music of Porcupine Tree." Porcupine Tree’s latest studio album, Fear of a Blank Planet, was released on April 16, 2007 in the UK and Europe, April 24 in the US and May 1 in Canada, featuring Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson and King Crimson’s Robert Fripp.
vs
Nine Inch Nails: Nine Inch Nails (abbreviated as NIN) is an industrial rock band, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for its musical direction. NIN’s music straddles a wide range of genres, while retaining a characteristically intense sound using electronic instruments and processing. After recording a new album, Reznor usually assembles a live band to perform with him; this live component is a separate entity from Nine Inch Nails in the recording studio. On stage, NIN often employs spectacular visual elements to accompany its performances, which frequently culminate with the band destroying musical instruments.
This is an extremely tough choice for me, as I really like both bands, each having produced outstanding albums this year and I listen to them both frequently. I’ll go for Porcupine Tree, barely.
Nine Inch Nails-7
As close as I expected, but PT shades it.
Match 3:

Working on a near orchestral scale, the nine-piece group has been known to create wide dynamic ranges, unique use of instrumentation and sounds, large songs that are composed almost classically with multiple movements within themselves, and engrossing use of art and visuals in both their album packaging and live performances. They are currently on an indefinite hiatus, as members of the band are busy with many other projects; they have, however, made it clear that they have not disbanded.

vs
the Dead Kennedys: The Dead Kennedys are a hardcore punk band from San Francisco, California. During the 1980s, the band gained a large underground following in the international punk music scene. The Kennedys’ songs mix the deliberately shocking lyrics of punk with a humorous, acerbic, satirical, and sarcastic left-wing commentary on current social and political issues. At the same time, some of their songs also mocked the hypocritical stances of some liberal elites. Many of the band’s songs criticize the right-wing ideologies of the religious right and the Ronald Reagan administration, along with many far-left personalities and ideas.

Foo Fighters-10
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-5
It’s official, FFS fails, voting for those generic tossers.
Match 9:
Radiohead: Do I actually need to say(more like paste) anything here?
vs
Iron Maiden: Ditto.
Iron Maiden is another band that’s a little too silly for me to swallow. Talented guys, but the songs don’t appeal to me.
Doesn’t sound any worse than popular movies being released on DVD, only to be updated later with an even better version after tons of people have already bought the lesser one, or albums getting re-released with better remixes and bonus tracks and all, but oh well
If you disagree that’s cool by me – let’s not derail the thread with it though!
radiohead btw
Radiohead anyway. <3
the cd release isn’t coming out till december 31st, though, and the version with the extra tracks is the ???40 discbox which most hardcore fans would have bought, given that it was announced at the same time? besides, you can pay what you want for the download so it ain’t that bad is it.
also, radiohead.
Either that or I’ve Got The Cold again.
Either one is pretty bad.
Radiohead.

Some examples of the topics addressed in the band’s albums are: war and its effect on family and humanity, environmental issues (e.g., nuclear power), the forming of the individual, and the nature of God, humankind, and existence.
vs
Yoko Kanno: Yoko Kanno (菅野 よう子, Kanno Yōko?, born March 19, 1964 in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan) is a composer, arranger and musician best known for her work on the soundtracks for many games, seminal anime films, TV series, live-action movies, and advertisements. She is also a skilled keyboardist, and is the frontress for The Seatbelts, who perform many of Kanno’s compositions on the various original soundtracks for which she is responsible.
Oh, and Abstain.
As gay and unoriginal as it is, THIS HAS TO BE DONE.
Sorry guys, temptation sucks.
Pain Of Salvation-1
Jeez, I wanted Kanno to win, but for Pain of Salvation to put up a decent fight. Oh well.
Match 13:

As the Velvets’ principal songwriter, Reed wrote about subjects of personal experience that rarely had been examined in rock and roll, including sadism and masochism ("Venus in Furs"), transvestites ("Sister Ray"), drug culture ("Heroin", and "I’m Waiting for the Man"), and transsexuals undergoing lobotomies ("Lady Godiva’s Operation"). As a guitarist, he was a pioneer in the use of distortion, volume-driven feedback, and nonstandard tunings.

Also, I bet half the people who voted for Lou Reed had never heard of him and were just being pretentious faggots.
Also, I bet half the people who voted for Lou Reed had never heard of him and were just being pretentious faggots.
I didn’t vote but I would assume as objectively as I can, that Lou Reed is overly more accessible than Megadeth. Although I cannot deny that, yes, some people haven’t heard of them and were being a tad pretentious because he is an artsy, sort of modernly-underground [if that makes sense] person to like.
Genesis I suppose!
I like quite a lot of Madonna’s stuff, but since seeing a Genesis concert earlier on in the year I think they perform much better live.
because I love you, yo murphy
And Genesis! Their wonderful psychedelic music easily beats any popstar.
I haven’t heard Genesis in a while, and after that fateful occurrence of listening to That’s All a couple days ago on the radio, I felt, to a small degree, ashamed.
Phil’s smashing as a solo artist, but this was when he really shone.
Madonna even though it’s pointless
Madonna-4
Quite a one sided affair, to say the least.
Match 14:

Match 15:
Gentle Giant: Gentle Giant were a British progressive rock band, one of the most experimental of the 1970s. Although the band is often classified as psych folk or noise rock, it is hard to define the Animal Collective sound as they often experiment with diverse styles and ideas.

Gentle Giant-3

I’m surprised this wasn’t a total blowout.
Match 16:
King Crimson: King Crimson are a musical group founded by guitarist Robert Fripp and drummer Michael Giles in 1969. Their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, is widely regarded as a landmark in progressive rock. Their later excursions into even more unconventional territory have been influential on many contemporary musical artists.
vs
Iced Earth: Iced Earth is an American heavy metal band that combine influences from thrash metal, power metal, progressive metal, opera, speed metal and NWOBHM. In 1999 their leader and songwriter Jon Schaffer teamed up with Blind Guardian vocalist Hansi K???rsch to form a side project called Demons & Wizards.
doesn’t seem hard rock and heavy metal is popular, although there’s nothing wrong with prog but it really aint my area of expertise and preference for music.
I need to stop taking this so seriously…
The thing about metal is it’s so diverse. I really love a lot of metal, but can’t listen to tons of other things in the genre as well. I like it when the lyrics are relatable and it’s not this overblown dramatic and theatrical thing.
I do feel like maybe some people here are just voting against the metal bands because it’s the silly little genre that’s cool to dismiss rather than having given any of it a chance. For such a diverse genre, as I stated, it really has a lot of negative connotations, as if every single band is going to be all about fist pumping and leather or viking-sword/goblin type lyrics or pure satanism and yadda yadda. Anyway though – at least I’ve personally listened to the bands I’ve voted against.
Then there’s the people that vote against whatever’s popular because OH GOD IT’S TERRIBLE TO LIKE WHAT OTHERS LIKE.
In general, it seems there’s always some really nasty negative vibe people get against many types of music for essentially no good reason. People have to HATE things. There can’t be simple disinterest. I can’t really speak for everyone though.
there’s varieties in metal as much as any genre depending on the area in which you’re listening to, I’m an avid fan of the genre but there are areas in which I avoid because of preference. I prefer faster paced songs but not super 100MPH rifs with growling and screaming, I like clean vocals against a steady rif that diverse in pitch freely. As well as that I’m into stories told in the lyrics, concept albums really do chain me to a wall. songs based on literature and movies are good in my tastes.
The musical styles can be incredible as well as utter shite. it comes down to personal taste in the end but the treatment of the bands in the basic genre of it has surprised me, some weren’t even metal and still received similar treatment which again comes to the point of people voting against the popular bands for the sake of voting against a popular band.
I’m getting to into this but it has indeed surprised me, I expected there to be several more fans of the genre here and there as well as honest voters which I can’t say don’t exist.
it’s like a massive wtf question comes into play when the underdog massacres an insanely popular band. I know it comes down to preference but voting for the sake of making sure a popular candidate doesn’t win is low, I just hope it isn’t actually happening.
It is perhaps a bit silly not liking bands because they’re popular but, I can sort of see where it’s coming from. I mean lately the Flaming Lips have had songs on three different adverts and they’re becoming more well known and it’s irritating me somewhat because one of the good things about them was their.. well they’re not underground by any means, but they had a cosy fanbase.
I tend to not like bands that are popular because said bands, I generally dislike anyway. I could say I hate a lot of bands though. For example, I generally hate Oasis, I generally hate Ian Brown etc.
Seriously, the British charts are awful. It makes me sad to think this is what constitutes "good" music. A hell of a lot of bands or singer/"songwriters" in the UK charts dont’ deserve hardly any of the money they get.
im seriously thinking of bringing in that you have to give a good solid reason WHY you’re voting for the band you’re voting for. the whole point of this thread was to bring in some good debate and discussion, not the same 10 idiots mindlessly voting the same, or someone voting to ‘balance it out’ or some bullshit reason.

I’m in favour of something like that but wait and see what exactly happens before reverting to means such as that. it may just piss off more people than please.
Have you considered adding wildcard options for regular voters, like Prak did with the anime rumble, for later rounds?
Just to keep us updated ! 🙂
Agreed, I’d definitely take prog over thrash, I find thrash immensely boring for the most part, other than maybe a handful of bands. And I find Jon Schaffer’s guitar playing greatly repetitive and boring as well, but I just had to go with Iced Earth because I loved Matt Barlow’s vocals during the years he was involved. And, as I said, they were the first metal band I became interested in several years ago, which would lead to the expansion of my musical palette greatly, which is another factor here.
I already talked to you about this, but for the sake of the thread discussion, I’m totally for doing this in round two. It’ll be fun to see the reasons people like the bands I don’t really know that well. I am one of the many people at ffshrine that isn’t very into metal, but I always like to see why people enjoy things. 🙂
elaborate plz.
I’m not Ktulu (obviously), but Prak let a number of regular voters pick a "wild card" entry in the later rounds that was a third option in the rumble. Some of the ones that got brought back wound up doing surprisingly well. It definitely keeps the rumbles interesting.
p.s. we should totally do an albums rumble too (I will run it if people are up for two rumbles at once)
p.p.s and a songs rumble with links to the songs would also be awesome
p.p.p.s. no real opinion on this one so no voting
say i never heard band A but i heard band B. is that a good enough reason to vote or no?
Also, that only happened to me once this rumble so far.

Those are some good ideas there. I’d love to see them tried out.
i dont care about either of these bands, though ;(

Sigh.

Match-22
The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground was an American rock band first active from 1965 to 1970 (& 1970 to 1973 in a different incarnation). Its best-known members were New Yorker Lou Reed and Welshman John Cale. Although never commercially successful whilst together, the Velvet Underground are often cited by critics as one of the most important and influential groups of their era. A famous remark, often attributed to British musician Brian Eno, is that while only a few thousand people bought the first Velvet Underground record upon its release, almost every single one of them was inspired to start a band. Their sound influenced many later musicians in many genres, including experimental, post-punk, new wave, and gothic rock.
vs
Super Furry Animals: Super Furry Animals (also known as "SFA", the "Furries" and the "Super Furries") are a Welsh rock band, with leanings towards psychedelic rock and electronic experimentation. The band formed in Cardiff after being in various other Welsh bands and techno outfits in the area, among them Ffa Coffi Pawb. Gruff Rhys, Dafydd Ieuan and Guto Pryce had been together since the early 1990s and had toured the north coast of France as a techno group.

Also, Bryan http://www.themarsvolta.com/video/
this isn’t even a decision
Maybe I’ll try again one day, I like some stuff now that I didn’t before
ah the original
they kind of radically change in each one? so the second is proper crazy experimental rock is the best word i guess for it, the third mellows out immensely and the fourth is essentially a commercial rock album.
tHE Velvet Underground-8
Holy shit.
Match 23:
30 Seconds to Mars: 30 Seconds to Mars (or Thirty Seconds to Mars) is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, featuring actor Jared Leto as the lead vocalist. Created in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon, 30 Seconds to Mars began as a small family project. Things began to speed up quickly, and Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After working with small revolving door of guitarists (as the band’s first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Miličević to round out the band’s roster.
vs
Of Montreal: Of Montreal is an American indie pop band formed in Athens, Georgia, fronted by Kevin Barnes. It was among the second wave of groups to emerge from The Elephant 6 Recording Company. The band was created by Kevin Barnes and named after a failed romance with a woman from Montreal, though the story changes in various interviews. Barnes was the only member of the "group" prior to his relocation to Athens, Georgia. There, he met Derek Almstead, later of the Circulatory System, M Coast, Elf Power etc., and Bryan Poole, who also performs as The Late B.P. Helium. Together, they recorded their first album, Cherry Peel, as well as The Bird Who Ate the Rabbit’s Flower and The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy.
Of Montreal
Or is it that 30 seconds to mars are that bad, that even pretentious indie can win?
30STM-1
Business as usual after a few close rounds. =/
Match 24:
Sonic Youth: Sonic Youth is an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1981. Since 1985, the band’s line-up has consisted of Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo (both vocals and guitar), Kim Gordon (bass guitar, guitar and vocals) and Steve Shelley (drums). Match 25:
Belle & Sebastian: Belle & Sebastian are a band formed in Glasgow, Scotland in January 1996. They have been called the greatest Scottish band ever, and are one of the most celebrated groups of the 1990s. Belle & Sebastian are often compared to influential indie bands such as The Smiths, as well as classic rock acts such as Love, Bob Dylan and Nick Drake. The name Belle & Sebastian is inspired by Belle et S???bastien, a children’s book by French writer C???cile Aubry. Lauded by critics, Belle & Sebastian’s "wistful pop" has nevertheless enjoyed only limited commercial success.
vs
Green Day: Green Day was originally part of the punk rock scene at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. Its early releases for independent label Lookout! Records earned them a grassroots fanbase, some of whom felt alienated when the band signed to a major label. Nevertheless, its major label debut Dookie became a breakout success in 1994 and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. As a result, Green Day was widely credited, along with fellow California punk bands The Offspring and Rancid, with reviving mainstream interest in and popularizing punk rock in the United States. Green Day’s three follow-up albums, Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning did not achieve the massive success of Dookie, but they were still successful, reaching double platinum, double platinum and gold status respectively. Its 2004 rock opera American Idiot reignited the band’s popularity with a younger generation, selling 5 million copies in the U.S.

13 years of fandom and counting.
don’t care what you think, you, judging person you
Words cannot convey the depth of my loathing for Green Day.
Just thought I’d release this statement to pull some life into the thread pro and anti green day people, HIT ME!
Really, if you’re going to go with that argument, you should probably just blame The Descendents? They were the biggest influence on bands like Greenday and Blink182 that the current popular emo stuff sprung up from.
And if you’re going to blame The Descendents you might as well blame Germs.
That’s how I put it.
Green Day aren’t that good but the emo wave that’s come in recent years, biggest pile of wank to hit the scene in recent times.
I’m not trying to be so one sided which explains the weird structure of the post.
it seems to me like green day just woke up one day and decided to dress differently and look very emo, which seems odd/disingenuous/cynical to me, almost. don’t see what green day have to do with a lot of the emo bands that are around today tbh. 🙁
Yeah, seriously, I don’t relate Green Day with todays emo-pop-rock bands at all. ?_?
Shoden, I’m surprised you vote for Green Day after all, even if you sorta dislike them ’cause you think they caused the new wave of emo music. D:
Green Day – 5
Thank god common sense prevailed.
Match 26:
Daft Punk: Daft Punk is a duo consisting of Paris house musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (born February 8, 1974) and Thomas Bangalter (born January 3, 1975). The duo is considered one of the most successful electronic music collaborations of all time, both in album sales and in critical acclaim. After Daft Punk reached significant popularity in the late 1990s house movement in France, other artists such as Air, Cassius and Dimitri from Paris began to receive a similar amount of attention.
vs
My Bloody Valentine: My Bloody Valentine are an alternative rock band formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1984 and predominately based in London. The founding members were guitarist/singer Kevin Shields and drummer Colm O’Ciosoig. The band’s lineup during their heyday also included singer-guitarist Bilinda Butcher and bassist Debbie Googe. The band’s use of guitar distortion, tremolo, and digital reverb placed them as part of the shoegazing movement. Their 1991 album Loveless took two years to make, but once released it was critically acclaimed. Since Loveless My Bloody Valentine became inactive and Shields scrapped albums worth of follow-up material. In 2007 Shields announced that the band had reunited and that the group’s third album would be released before the end of the year.
My Bloody Valentine
I hate the Frogs but DP are good in their right oh, OOOOOH, I’ll have to choose
My Bloody Valentine.
Daft Punk, actually.
Ok, I thought about it, I LOVE both bands, I love them as good as equally, but I’d like to see My Bloody Valentine continue~
Edit: lol, Daft Punk will win anyway.
Daft Punk-7
Kind of surprised. Actually, very surprised.
Match 27:
Spock’s Beard: Spock’s Beard is a progressive rock band formed in 1992 in Los Angeles by brothers Neal and Alan Morse. Neal played keyboards and was the lead vocalist, as well as being the primary songwriter; Alan plays electric guitar. The pair teamed with fellow musicians Nick D’Virgilio (drums) and Dave Meros (bass) and released their debut album, The Light, in 1995. The quartet were later joined by veteran keyboardist Ryo Okumoto.
vs
The Descendents: Descendents were formed in 1978 by guitarist Frank Navetta, bassist Tony Lombardo and drummer Bill Stevenson. Their first release — the only one with this lineup — was "Ride the Wild"/"It’s a Hectic World", a double A-side of melodic surf-pop. In 1980 they enlisted Stevenson’s old schoolfriend Milo Aukerman as a singer, and reappeared as a punk band, becoming a major player in the hardcore scene developing in Los Angeles at the time. Their first release with Aukerman, 1981’s Fat EP, was a furious six-minute barrage of teen angst and goofball humour, featuring such songs as "My Dad Sucks" and the eleven-second "Wienerschnitzel".
Also guys, speak up on whether or not you want 32 first round matches or 64 as I think 64 will drag on too long, but I don’t mind either.
Also guys, speak up on whether or not you want 32 first round matches or 64 as I think 64 will drag on too long, but I don’t mind either.
I definitely wouldn’t mind 64 first rounders!

Bowie has taken cues from a wide range of fine art, philosophy and literature.
x2
David Bowie on grounds of Modest Mouse only having one song i like.
Modest Mouse-6
Kind of surprising, thought MM would win this.
Match 31:
The Clash: The Clash were an English rock band, active from 1976 to 1986, and part of the original wave of UK punk rock in the late 1970s. Although a punk rock band, the band experimented with reggae, funk, New Wave, dub, and rockabilly in their music. The band were formed by Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, lead and backing vocals) and Paul Simonon (bass guitar, backing vocals).
vs
the Chemical Brothers: The Chemical Brothers are the UK-based Grammy Award winning electronic music duo of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons (occasionally referred to as Chemical Tom and Chemical Ed). Initially they called themselves "The Dust Brothers", after the noted United States production duo of the same name, but their burgeoning popularity and the threat of legal action from the originals led them to change their name in 1995. Along with The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method and other lesser-known acts they were pioneers of the big beat electronic dance genre, and are known for high-quality live sets.
Also guys, im updating the list of those who’ve gone through and those who’ve been knocked out. It’s on page 19~
The Clash-13
Sigh.
Match 32:
Pink Floyd: Pink Floyd are an English rock band that initially earned recognition for their psychedelic rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. Kamelot: Kamelot is a power metal band that incorporates many elements of symphonic, progressive and on the last two albums even gothic metal into their music. The band hails from Tampa, Florida, and was founded by Thomas Youngblood and Richard Warner in 1991.
vs
Mastadon: Mastodon is a Grammy-nominated band from Atlanta, Georgia. They are usually classified as a heavy metal group, but there have been debates on what specific sub-genre they belong to. There is also a clear hardcore influence on the band, unsurprising as several of its members previously played in hardcore bands.
DON’T TALK, WATCH!!
So far I only did it once (I don’t know Riverside), ; ; sorry Bryan (Looking at it afterwards, Aphex was gonna win that anyway).
Mastadon, fun metal, and I like them a bit more than Kamelot.
Mastadon just has some recording of a guy taking a crap for the vocal part, they’re fine with the music but I admit I like Kamelot more.
Kamelot-4
A tie, so I cast the deciding vote and it goes to Kamelot.
The usual flurry of votes for when two metal bands face off.
Match 34:
Dio: Dio is a heavy metal band led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who formed it in October 1982 after leaving Black Sabbath. In an interview, available on the special edition re-release of Holy Diver, Dio states that he never intended to begin a solo career. His intention was to form a new band with fellow former Black Sabbath member drummer Vinny Appice. Naming the band Dio made sense from a commercial standpoint, as the name was already well-known at that time. In addition to Dio on vocals and keyboards originally, and Vinny Appice on drums, the band featured Vivian Campbell who played guitar, and Jimmy Bain, bass. Dio has sold over 47 million albums worldwide.
vs
Surfjan Stevens: Sufjan Stevens is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Petoskey, Michigan. He is considered part of the folk revival in indie pop, but his influences are very broad. His music has been likened to electronica and the minimalism of Steve Reich.[2] Stevens originally announced plans to make a concept album for each of the 50 U.S. states, having begun the series with Michigan (2003) and Illinois (2005).
I fear this thread is just leading to people being all YOUR TASTE SUCKS 😮
I vote Sufjan Stevens
Dio.
Ronnie James Dio in the band DIO itself, well he isn’t anywhere as good as he was in Rainbow and Black Sabbath but a lot of the stuff throughout the span of the career is very good, sure Vivian Campbell went emo and left the band, as good as he was I prefered the sound Craig Goldy gave to the band live and on the album Dream Evil.
Whitesnake fans will recognise one of the other DIO guitarists, Doug Aldrich who has played on the latest of DIO’s albums. Bloody excellent on stage too but really hasn’t shone much with his writing in the band. Sure it’s not mandatory but a lot of people should know the song and the controversial album cover for the album of the same name, Holy Diver. Now the faggotry band Killswitch Engage may have killed the song but at least they did raise it’s profile somewhat. Holy Diver isn’t my favourite DIO song, that would have to be Sunset Superman from Dream Evil or Don’t Talk To Strangers from Holy Diver.
I’m not really a fan of Sufjan Stevens but I have indeed heard his stuff, I admit it isn’t my to my liking and that the band DIO is really coming from a biased liking before the poll. Everyone is allowed their obsessions as strange as they can be and really mine lies on Ronnie James Dio from his blues days in Ronnie and the redcaps and ELF to the hard rock and heavy metal days like now. He’s 65 and still owns the crap out of a lot of singers even now.
Well, I’ll shut up now but that’s my explanation done.
For a supposed metal fan, I’m really fucking weird, I know
For a supposed metal fan, I’m really fucking weird, I know
The videos, I find them more funny than serious. How can anyone take Rainbow In The Dark seriously? I mean the keyboard riff makes you want to kill Jimmy Bain for making it and the video is just so stupid.
At least it’s something but tape clips from live performances like a lot of videos for metal singles, as stupid as it is.
I don’t think I could watch a typical metal video without laughing til I hurt myself at how silly it is. The ones I’ve seen are like that though.
Surfjan-5
Another tie and another deciding vote for me. I vote for Dio.
Match 35:
PJ Harvey: Polly Jean Harvey is an English musician and songwriter. Among the accolades she has received have been the 2001 Mercury Music Prize, six BRIT Award nominations, five Grammy nominations and two further Mercury Music Prize nominations. Rolling Stone named her 1992’s Best New Artist and Best Singer Songwriter and 1995’s Artist of the Year, and placed two of her albums on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. She was also rated the number one female rock artist by Q magazine in a 2002 poll.
vs
KMFDM: KMFDM is an industrial rock band and the brainchild of founding member Sascha Konietzko. KMFDM was founded in Paris, France on February 29, 1984 as a joint effort between Konietzko and German painter/multi-media performer Udo Sturm to perform for the opening of an exhibition of young European artists at the Grand Palais.
KMFDM-3
As expected, PJ wins pretty easily.
Match 36:
Neutral Milk Hotel: Neutral Milk Hotel was an American indie folk band. The band’s chief songwriter, Jeff Mangum, played with a number of other musicians on the band’s two full-length albums. Notable contributors to the band’s oeuvre include Jeremy Barnes (drums), Scott Spillane (horns), Julian Koster (banjo/bass guitar/saw), and producer-instrumentalist Robert Schneider. Neutral Milk Hotel is a part of The Elephant 6 Recording Company, based out of Athens, Georgia.
vs
The Cure: The Cure are an English rock band that formed in Crawley, Sussex in 1976. The band has experienced several lineup changes, with frontman, guitarist and main songwriter Robert Smith ??? known for his iconic wild hair, pale complexion, smudged lipstick and frequently gloomy and introspective lyrics ??? the only constant member.
I’ll go for The Cure on this one
but Neutral Milk Hotel is a serious contender for my all time favorite band.
I hate whiny hippie folk shit.
The Cure-6
Carrying this on after the "interuption", and this result surprises me.
Match 37:
The Flaming Lips: The band is known for their lush, multi-layered, psychedelic arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song and album titles (e.g "Pilot Can at the Queer of God", "Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber)" and Yeah, I Know It’s a Drag… But Wastin’ Pigs Is Still Radical). They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which feature costumes, balloons, puppets, video projections, complex stage light configurations, giant hands, large amounts of confetti, and frontman Wayne Coyne’s signature man-sized plastic bubble, in which he traverses the audience. In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die".
vs
Dire Straits: Dire Straits was a British rock band, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (guitar and vocals), his brother David Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums), and subsequently managed by Ed Bicknell. Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock reigned, Dire Straits worked within the conventions of classic rock, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to modern audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s. In their early days, Mark and David requested that pub owners turn down the amps so that patrons could converse while the band played — indicative of their unassuming demeanor. Despite this oddly self-effacing approach to rock and roll, Dire Straits soon became hugely successful with their first album going multi-platinum globally.

ill basically pm the regular voters and people that have contributed heavily to the thread and get a wildcard off them each.
y/n/m?
But Dire Straits, infinitely.
oh and Dire Straits
i really like some dire straits stuff but the flaming lips by a lot
Dire Straits-5
Moving on, moving on;
Match 38:
Machinae Supremacy: Machinae Supremacy is a band from Lule???, Sweden that combines modern heavy metal and alternative rock with chiptunes. Self-defined as SID metal, many of their songs use a SidStation that features the SID chip of the Commodore 64. They have released a considerable number of songs for free download on their site, 32 original recordings, boasting over 3 million downloads as of 2006.
vs
Our Lady Peace: Our Lady Peace, often abbreviated OLP, is a Canadian alternative rock band consisting of Raine Maida (vocals, rhythm guitar), Duncan Coutts (bass guitar, backing vocals), Jeremy Taggart (drums, percussion), and Steve Mazur (lead guitar, backing vocals). Until 2001, guitarist and founding member Mike Turner was a member of the band. During their career they have sold over five million albums worldwide, won four Juno Awards out of twenty nominations, and won ten MuchMusic Video Awards, including the People’s Choice Award in 1997, 1998 and 2000. They have the most awards won by any artist or group at the MMVA’s.
They are WAY up there for me, having made a handful of my favorite albums (Clumsy, Happiness…, Age of Spiritual Machines) 🙂 Raine’s voice is quite possibly my alltime favorite, tied only with Adam from Counting Crows. His command of it in the ear-shattering range is impeccable.
Also, Merl knows who they are.
Match 39:
Jamiroquai: Jamiroquai is a Grammy Award-winning English funk / soul / disco band. Jamiroquai was initially the most prominent component in the early-1990s London-based acid jazz movement, alongside groups such as Incognito, the Brand New Heavies, Galliano, and Corduroy. Subsequent albums have explored other musical directions.
vs
Kings of Leon: Kings of Leon is a rock band made up of three brothers and a cousin, based in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, who play a cross between Southern rock and garage rock. The group’s name is derived from Nathan, Caleb, and Jared’s father and grandfather, both named Leon. Jared and Caleb were born in Tennessee, while Nathan and Matthew were born in Oklahoma.
HARHARDY
You fail, lulz. They win by # of votes, jftr.
STOOPID AMERICANS!
I wouldn’t call myself a fan, but I’ve always liked Jamiroquai stuff.
Recently I heard some from Kings of Leon, and must admit they’re pretty good. IMO, The singer sounds like a cross between Ozzy, Steven Tyler and a bit of Robert Plant.
I have to go with Jamiroquai on this one, only ’cause I been in a progressive electronica type mood lately.
damn right =P
Also Our Lady Peace is awesome.
Also I vote for Kings of Leon.
Good grief.
Kings of Leon-2
Deciced to let this rest for a bit, as votes had gone way down. Lets see if it helps.
Match 39:
The Kinks: The Kinks were an English pop/rock group formed in 1963, and categorised as a British Invasion band, along with the other members of the so-called Big Four (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who). Despite being less commercially successful than these three contemporaries, mostly because of an untimely four-year ban from the United States in the mid-to-late 1960s, the Kinks are cited among them as one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time.
vs
Explosions in the Sky: Explosions in the Sky is an American instrumental post-rock band from Texas. The band has garnered popularity beyond the post-rock scene for their cinematic, elaborately developed guitar work, narratively styled instrumentals, and their enthusiastic and emotional live shows.[citation needed] They primarily play with three electric guitars and a set of drums, and at times sub out the third electric guitar for a bass guitar.
Explosions In The Sky
But I will say The Kinks just to give a vote
Know thy classics.
Kinks
EITS-1
Match 40:
The Sword: The Sword was formed in 2003 in Austin, Texas by J.D. Cronise. Cronise, a guitarist and vocalist who had played with the Those Peabody’s, searched out a number of musicians before finally assembling the band completely with rhythm guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Trivett Wingo.
vs
The National: The National is a Brooklyn-based indie rock band formed in 1999, by friends from Cincinnati, Ohio. Influences range from Bruce Springsteen to Tindersticks. The band’s morose, self-deprecating lyrics are written and sung by Matt Berninger in a distinctive, deep baritone. The rest of band comprises two pairs of brothers; Aaron & Bryce Dessner and Scott & Bryan Devendorf. Padma Newsome, from sister band, Clogs, often contributes strings, keyboards, and other arrangements and instrumental flourishes.
I prefered The Nationals style of music.
And I slightly prefer The National. ~
The Sword-2
Right well, seeing how this is dying big time, im going to start the 2nd round. I’ll send some of you PM’s asking for a wildcard nomination, either one of the bands knocked out, or an entirely new nomination.

Round Two, Match 1:
Dream Theater: Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name "Majesty" by John Myung, John Petrucci, and Mike Portnoy, while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, before they dropped out to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess. Dream Theater has become one of the most successful progressive rock bands since the height of the genre in the mid-1970s.
vs
Sufjan Stevens: Wildcard eliminated in Round 1.
MYUNG TACKLE!!!
sufjan!
DREAM THEATER
4 srs.
not draming out or anything, just keep that in mind.
Dream Theater-7
Surfjan-5
Round 2, Match 2:
The Cure
vs
Ben Folds
bryan i am more blaming people not voting than you? if that is what you meant!
ive been updating since October, so im not going to suddenly stop, votes have been pretty steady and all, bar one or two rounds.
still getting more votes then Prak’s rumble, o burn.
hi bryan, I’m voting in your rumble, wut u gonna do bout it ho?!
hi bryan, I’m voting in your rumble, wut u gonna do bout it ho?!
die of shock =O
shock
Ben Folds songs make me gag, but not in a good way. D:
Ben Folds-4
Another one bites the dust.
Round 2, Match 3:
The Stooges
vs
The Ramones
Such an unfair battle ~o~
The Ramones-7
Well, that blows. I like the Ramones and all, but I didnt want a masacre.
Round 2, Match 4:
Opeth
vs
Less then Jake
Less then Jake-5
A metal band wins a vote on FFS. I’m shocked.
Round 2, Match 5
Muse
vs
the Foo Fighters
The foo fighters are wank
I’ll just go with Foo Fighters
Muse-7
I just want people who voted FF to know, im done with you. Now and forever. You all disgust me.
Round 2, Match 6:
Radiohead
vs
Aphex Twin
Sorry Bry ~~~
Sorry Bry ~~~
I’m not sorry.
Aphex Twin
RADIOHEAD.
RADIOHEAD.
You shouldn’t vote at all unless you’ve heard both the bands, imo.
RADIOHEAD.
When I see walls and walls of the same vote I often wonder how many are just bandwagoning, thanks for confirming that it does happen
Usually it does, but I thought I’d try it for once. In previous situations I coin flipped, this time I was out of coins.
Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin-2
Shoden, make an effort to check out the two groups, or dont vote at all, kthx. The point is to be encouraged to listen to new stuff, not be a fucking sheep.
Round 2, Match 7:
Porcupine Tree
vs
Sonic Youth
ok, I’m not a fan of either but I’ve been spoonfed stuff by both, now it’s the coin that will decide for me in this scenario and the coin says tails which means
Sonic Youth
When I’m not busy and it happens again I’ll look into the bands, just to appease the grumpy ones.

Learn when to keep your trap shut seriously.
Also Porcupine Tree
ok, I’m not a fan of either but I’ve been spoonfed stuff by both, now it’s the coin that will decide for me in this scenario and the coin says tails which means
Sonic Youth
When I’m not busy and it happens again I’ll look into the bands, just to appease the grumpy ones.
Disregarded.
Thought So. At least I’m the one giving reason this time though. Being unable to decide between 2 choices that aren’t down my taste alley, doesn’t matter because a vote’s a vote. Unless someone else starts being clumsily honest this is going to get dull.
would you vote for someone you hadnt heard of in a presidential election?
cut the crap, seriously.
But I want to listen to them – so anyone reccomend any songs?
Well, I haven’t gotten around to downloading Daydream Nation or In Absentia because I have SoulSeek and SoulSeek takes forever to download anything.
Buuuut I have Fear of a Blank Planet and I was pretty amazed. I was half-expecting something I wouldn’t like but I can say that Porcupine Tree might become my latest obsession. They are really goood.
Thanks for the album recommendations. 🙂
EDIT
Ok, I finally got to listening to Sonic Youth and I definantly would like to put a vote down for this one (if I can still, that is). Sonic Youth is good – I liked the album and everything that you recommended buuuut they didn’t capture me from the beginning like Porcupine Tree. I mean Porcupine Tree made me zone out just listening to their music – it was wonderful wonderful bliss.
So my vote goes for Porcupine Tree.
Anywayz..
Porcupine Tree-7
Sonic Youth-5
Two excellent groups but the Prog giants take it down.
Round Two, Match 8:
Faith No More: (recommended albums: Angel Dust)
vs
Animal Collective: (recommended album: Strawberry Jam)
cut the crap, seriously.
Loose question. I can’t vote in a presidential election because I’m on the wrong side of the Atlantic, but if the question stands otherwise then no.
But I stated I’d heard of the bands, I said I was spoonfed the stuff, I’ll go into a little detail: I have unfortunate friends with diverse tastes in music who’ve sent me songs via MSN, some of the songs feature the selected artists. I didn’t like the sound of the music so I didn’t get any of their stuff otherwise, unless you want to introduce a rule stating how many songs of each artist are to heard to be accounted to "hearing of them", the point walks tall.
I’m pissing you off aren’t I? Well, I just wanted to explain and doing so has it’s prices.
For This round I’ll vote Faith No More to me, the more decent of the 2 artists. Now what I predict here is Animal Collective overtaking FNM, they seem more popular here.
But to be honest, if I hadn’t deliberately come out of the blue and actually admitted and exemplified the issue, which has been pointed out before, who would have? Who’s to say no one else sheeps, votes blindly, moves along? It’s easily possible to vote and move along because you don’t HAVE to instate a reason to your vote, it’s very tight and nazi like to demand it but to do so is to get a fair contest, I remember Moonlapse contemplating the idea before in the earlier bouts.
I’ve screwed myself over here by admitting first, suppose there’s always a price. I’ve portrayed myself as a massive wanker doing this, I’m sure some of you are pissed off at me, but think; I’m not the only one who’s done it or does it. There’s victims and criminals in this issue.
Long, emo post, but I just thought I had to do it, don’t want to be making enemies over silly things.
Just hope I’ve been clear enough.
FNM-5
Animal Collective-4
Slightly surprising I must say.
Round Two, Match 9:
My Bloody Valentine
vs
Deep Purple
But supporting Deep Purple.
mbv
DEEP PURPLE Post Blackmore I think DP sucks but with him in songs like Perfect Strangers, Child In Time, Hush, Burn, Black Night, Space Truckin’ and Smoke On The Water, they moulded the way for the world of rock from there on.
Plus Blackmore is god, GOD! Well, he was better in early Rainbow but still…
My Bloody Valentine-3
Round Two, Match Ten
Bjork
vs
Yes
=/
I vote YES Rick Wakeman is a god amongst musicians.
=(
Oh, well. Tough luck as usual, but still VERY surprising.
Bjork-10
Round 2, Match 11:
Kraftwerk:
vs
The Kinks
kraftwerk. just.
I’ve been waiting for a round I have a valid opinion on.
The Kinks – screechy cba gimmicky retro rock that I don’t care much for despite the fact it’s "cool" to like them
Kraftwerk – pioneers of all good things electronic, a brilliant live band and i just love them
..Kraftwerk
The Kinks-7
Round 2, Match 12:
Yoko Kanno
vs
Pink Floyd
This one was a very tough choice for me. On one side, my love for Pink Floyd and how revolutionary Floyds music was. On the other side, I am totally in love with the jazzy feel of Yoko Kanno’s Cowboy Bebop music. Plus his work with Ghost In the Shell: SAC. So in the end I had to vote Yoko.

his????
Oops, I wanted to say her but I guess my fingers wanted to type his.
Yoko Kanno-2
Ugh. Sheep voters are really irritating. Is it so hard to give a reason why you voted for who you did? Quit being lazy.
And Chris I like PF less you forget.
Round 2, Match 13:
The Mars Volta:
vs
the National:
I had to find songs from both bands but after listening to both of them I have to cast my vote in favor of The Nationals.
Also, Ebichu 🙂 i lold
but, srsly Mars Volta
but, srsly Mars Volta
Either way, obviously, The Mars Volta; personally I find them admirably ruthless, genuine, individual, charismatic and mind-blowing with an all-round brilliant sound [not that it’s possible to say it has a specific "sound"].
And for my two cents on the National was merely that they didn’t do much for me, very few bands do nowadays.
The National-2
Round 2, Match 14:
Smashing Pumpkins:
vs
PJ Harvey:
I love her latest album.
PJ Harvey
so I vote PJ Harvey
Do you like the Smashing Pumpkins?
(Smashing Pumpkins 😉 )
Yes, I do.
PJ Harvey-6
Wow.
Round 2, Match 15:
Dead Kennedy’s
vs
The Clash
The Clash
One of my favorite bands tbh.
Gahh. I guess I agree with DK’s motives and ideas mostly, but I prefer the Clash’s more diverse sound.
Abstain.
The Clash
The Clash-9
Round 2, Match 16:
The Rapture:
vs
Explosions in the Sky:
Explosions in the Sky in my opinion is just really extensively boring guitar masturbation without any emotion or feeling.
EITS are still neat sweet post-rock, though, but quite dull in comparison~
Explosions in the Sky-2
No point keeping this going.
Round 2, Match 17:
David Bowie
vs
The Pixies
But I’ll go with The Pixies.
I LOVE him.
I usually don’t vote against Bowie, but I simply do like The Pixies simply more.
David Bowie-8
Epic clash, but the Pixies sneak past Ziggy Stardust.
Round 2, Match 18:
Red Hot Chilli Peppers:
vs
The Descendents
The Descendents-6
RHCP win due to my deciding vote, even if I dont care for them much, I just despise the Descendents.
Round 2, Match 19:
Our Lady Peace
vs
Bloc Party
(Also, I would like to mention that I love last.fm)
ty, Bryan. My revivals will lose in consecutive rounds :[
I was going to ask the same thing but I assumed he voted to break the tie. But now that I look at the score if he had voted it would be 7-6 not 7-5.
ty, Bryan. My revivals will lose in consecutive rounds :[
listen to better music then.
Why did The Descendents lose when it was 6-6?
because i miscounted….?
i guess
Our Lady Peace 2
Round 2, Match 20:
KMFDM
vs
Of Montreal
Buuuut I go for KMFDM.
Buuuut I go for KMFDM.
KMFDM I guess
KMFDM-6
Close fought win for Clive Barnes and Co.
Round 2, Match 21:
Genesis:
vs
Nine Inch Nails:
oh man
Genesis
Genesis-7
A tie! Casting vote, despite betraying my love of Prog, goes to NIN, Reznor is too good not to vote for.
Round 2, Match 22:
Metallica:
vs
Placebo:
Sure they aren’t the greatest now. But they are still pretty legendary in my book.
Can never betray the fact I like em! Plus placebo gets on me nerves.
fuck off and die.
Metallica-12
Placebo-5
More one side then I expected:
Round 2, Match 23:
King Crimson:
vs
Daft Punk:
Man I’m surprised Metallica didn’t just get a bunch of WHAT LAWL THEY SOLD OUT comments
Ok people will probably boo and hiss at me for this one but Daft Punk
King Crimson-3
No surprises here.
Round 2, Match 24:
Neutral Milk Hotel:
vs
Judas Priest:
Let the slaughther begin.
A lot of their lyrics are shit and there’s goofy ass songs like Turbo Lover but they were huge influences to a lot of the guys I love that came a little later down the road – and they’re still doin their thing today, so I definitely can respect them
Trent, I am shocked you are not a fan.
Trent, I am shocked you are not a fan.
You’re not the only one who’s rather shocked! But I just can’t seem to like any song by them, it’s like it’s one of the few bands where the whole lo-fi and off-key singing just doesn’t appeal to me. 😡
Judas Priest-8
Hmm.
Round 2, Match 25:
Spock’s Beard:
vs
Joy Division:
joy division
I find their stuff more humorous than appealing, strange lyrics, don’t feel anything for JD.
I find their stuff more humorous than appealing, strange lyrics, don’t feel anything for JD.
Joy Division

SFA-3
Well, that was a true and utter farce.
Round 2, Match 27:

Modest Mouse:
Modest Mouse-4
Interesting. I like both bands but being a metalhead im glad IM won.
4 matches to go til the last 32.
Round 2, Match 28:
the Flaming Lips:
vs
Jamiroquai:
I just checked. And by what he told me, he has left today.
Jamiroquai – 2
the Flaming Lips – 11
and the obvious squash comes to pass.
Round 2, Match 30:
Lynyrd Skynyrd
vs
Kamelot
Its only a model.
Lynyrd Skynyrd-3
Huge dip in votes but I guess its not surprising. 2 matches to go in round 2.
Round 2, Match 31:
Lou Reed:
vs
The Eagles:
Eagles anyday in this matchup, they’re amazing, sure I’m not exactly a fan but their stuff is fantastic!

Does shit naturally flow out of your mouth every time you speak?
Anywayz….
Lou Reed-3
the Eagles-4
Round 2, Match 32:
Dio:
vs
the Velvet Underground:
velvet underground
the Velvet-6
Predictible victory. Round 3 is now among us.
And the rest of you lazy cunts get voting again. We were getting 15+ votes a round for a while.
Round 3, Match 1:
Dream Theater:
vs
The Cure:
Yikes.
Anyway: Dream Theater
wait, wha?
Oh god, Dream Theater Id be a fan if the singer didn’t suck but bloody hell, the other guys in the band make up for his failure.
Dream Theater-6
-_-
Round 3, Match 2:
The Ramones:
vs
the Foo Fighters:
the Ramones-6
A tie and the deciding vote(mine) goes to the Ramones as they are not a pile of worthless, over-rated shit.
Round 3, Match 3:
The Mars Volta:
vs
Deep Purple:
The Mars Volta-3

Of the two, I listen to Radiohead more
The Clash -4
Round 3, Match 5:
The Rapture:
vs
Bjork:
the rapture
Bjork-3
And the Rapture surprises me yet again. I have yet to see why people like them, tbh D:
Round 3, Match 7:
The Pixies:
vs
Daft Punk:
Ugh.
Daft Punk-5
Hmm, I like both but I am still sad to see the Pixies go.
Round 3, Match 8:
Bloc Party:
vs
Opeth:
Bloc Party-5
And the Swedish death metal gods march on. Right has prevailed.
Round 3, Match 9:
Nine Inch Nails:
vs
Metallica:
=)
METALLICA!
No contest, never been a lover of NiN’s music, despite the fact its slapped all over one of my favourite movies.
Metallica
Nine Inch Nails-2
A little more one sided then I expected.
Round 3, Match 10:
Lou Reed:
vs
Porcupine Tree:
Porcupine Tree-1
Sigh.
Round 3, Match 11:
Judas Priest:
vs
Joy Division:
oh yes
they’re a timeless band that once again as of recent proved they still have the ability to create steel strong albums, but with a large handful of classics attuned to their long career to, they have much more to throw up in battle, in quantity and quality.
I’d say they exceeded Iron Maiden in quality but that’d be difficult to actually admit.
poor Joy Division stands little chance, despite the fact they’ve got some catchy songs of their own. Just not enough to rival the power of Judas Priest.
Joy Division-1
Huge turnout for that one.
Round 3, Match 12:
Queen:
vs
the Flaming Lips:
wowsers.
I’m a fan, not really with The Flaming Lips
Flaming Lips-2
Wow. Might have been closer if known Flaming Lips fans bothered to vote(you know who you are).
Round 3, Match 13:
Red Hot Chili Peppers:
vs
The Velvet Underground:
Also, Velvet Underground I find RHCP just, mind-numbingly average.
The Velvet Underground-6
Woot.
Round 3, Match 14:
Pink Floyd:
vs
Faith No More:
I’m pissed off with myself for missing the vote in the last round. As the result is a joke.
Faith No More-1
Pretty pitiful turnout, but downtime may have something do with it. Lots of people who could and indeed should be voting have been around though.
Round 3, Match 15:
Last match of R3 because im a fucking idiot that has misplaced the list of round 3 matches and came up a band short, so Iron Maiden gets a bye.
Kamelot:
vs
Of Montreal:
of Montreal
I’m pissed off with myself for missing the vote in the last round. As the result is a joke.
wtf. no it isn’t
Also, Of Montreal
