2 USB ports, no multi-memory card port and no backwards compartibility with any PS2 games.

On the other hand, much more cheaper.

So what you guys think of the latest move of Sony?

As I own a PS2, this version of the PS3 would be the best for me. No backwards compartibility sucks though.

I never really understood the whole point in backwards compatibility, I guess because whenever I want to play a PS2 or even PS1 game I just turn on the PS2. But this one is just like the old 20GB that already didn’t have memory card readers, but minus 2 of the almost useless USB ports and PS2 compatibility but with an extra 20GB. For the price I think it’s a nice move.

Its a positive move, and the 60GB models wont be out of the market anyway.

Well no backwards compatibility is a real disadvantage for me, generally because Im the kind of guy who wants to have everything on a single system.

And I guess this is just for EU.

backwards compatibility because by the time i would want to get a ps3 i am sure that my ps2 will be broken because sony and microsoft like to make systems that break down really easily

Ash makes a solid point. Also, it would have been nice to play FF I, II, IV-XII on one system. I can basically do that with the Legend of Zelda, on the Wii, right now (where’ Majora’s Mask?!?!?).

Nintendo, FTW.

Well, I admit backwards compatibility is also an important aspect to me. Although, since the PS3 can run linux…

Compile a PSX and PS2 emulator? It’s pseudo-illegal, lacks Network gaming, and couldn’t run some games right, but hey, that fixes it. And it’s region-free too.

it still plays ps1 games but not ps2 games

There are no PS1&PS2 emulators for Linux PS3 in development, and there are no plans from emulation teams to come up with one.
Furthermore, just look at the PCSX2. They have been developing their emu for years and still they have so much way to go until they reach a near perfect state.

http://packages.debian.org/pcsx – PSOne emulator which compiles under PowerPC

It already compiles on the PowerPC architecture, so I imagine getting it to compile on a PS3 (which is PowerPC-based) shouldn’t be too hard.

Too bad for the PS2 tho. It’s going to take more than changing a few variable types to get PCSX2 to work (anyone know how to port x86 ASM to PowerPC ASM?).
