As you can tell, these are Knockoffs. No Macross labels anywhere.

This is a comparison of the real and the fake.

I have to admit that they made real good knock offs of the actual models (I’ll post the images later).
I own a real one, and it cost me about $4. Normally they go for $4 – $6 a pop at shops and conventions.

I know it’s wrong, but when it comes to anime toys, I love knock offs.
I rarely buy the real ones unless I find deals or I just can’t pass it up. But when I buy collector mark-ups, I really feel ripped-off, which is why I love knock offs, especially the ones done right to the T.

For anything otaku in the UK you have to pay at least a 10% (more likely 20-40%) mark-up over US prices. Examplo: Viz LLC’s Shonen Jump manga retail at $7.99 in the States, but at ???5.99 (roughly: $11.50) here. If it’s a fair price, I’ll buy the real deal, otherwise… that’s if you can find cool stuff like figures/garage kits in the first place.

The only knock-offs that I regularly buy are figurines and resin kits.
I especially love going to the small monthly comic-cons in L.A. I can always find great deals on stuff, I even haggle prices when I have to.

All of my (too many) tankobons are legitimate, expensive US/UK/JP versions. About 60% of my disposable income goes on manga. I don’t download scanlations. However, I do get friends to send me anime from HK and Singy, and to be honest I don’t fret over their provenance as they’re always of reasonable quality and can’t be bought in Europe. If stuff gets a UK release – like Azumnaga Daioh, say – I’ll buy the legit version: all 6 volumes at ???120.

Unless, of course, they’ve kept me waiting for 3 years behind the American release, in which case: fuck you, I’ve already torrented/downloaded/imported it while you were pissing about wondering whether you’d make enough cash off the PAL conversion.

The NTSC/PAL divide is the cause of much woe here as I guess you’d imagine guv’nor. Especially painful when it comes to games.

I got a gamecube like two months ago and have hardly played it. Not because I don’t care for it, just because I’ve been busy lately. Before that (like 6-8 months before that), it was a DS that I haven’t played much.

Actually, I think the one useful thing I did buy for myself that I was happy with was an espresso machine with milk steaming wand. Only $20, which is great. It works well (although I’m not a coffee/espresso snob so who knows, maybe its shit), or at the very least, gets the job done.

Thanksgiving may have questionable roots, but its a time to get together and celebrate with family. Its not nearly as commercial as other holidays celebrated the world-over, and tbqh, I think its great. Anything that lets me have a day off school (or gives someone time and a half at work), is an excuse to get together with family, is by no means a "dumb holiday" for me.

That’s before tax. It’s not too bad, I also tend to be the one who works on public holidays so pull in $50/hr (before tax). I usually work 20 or so hours a week with 5 hours being Sunday (so time and a half), normally it’s $350-$400 a week from working at the video store. Then there’s my buy/sell trading which can be $100-$500 a week depending on how much leg work I want to do, building a computer I charge $100 (I take my time with cable management), photography charge varies depending on whether they want prints or just a DVD with the photos on it etc etc.

I bought tickets to a concert of the portland youth philharmonic which is a group I was in but had to drop for time reasons so it was really strange not being on stage but seeing the usual routine happen (and seeing all the people I hadn’t seen since last Spring).

Sure, it had potential, but it never really pulled through. 10/10 for the concept, but minus several million for never pulling it off.

Exactly. Digimon’s similarities are only in the fact that both shows deal with monsters and humans interacting; the shows themselves were vastly different. Charmed and Hex are both about witches fighting demons. And they even share the same powers. And if you are saying, "well, there were other shows that dealt with witches and demons, such as Buffy." yes, that’s true, but Buffy dealt predominantly with slayers; witches were really in the background and were only introduced later in the shows run (around when charmed was starting).

Hahaha, ok, I’ll admit that there is a bit of a bias because I love charmed and I preferred digimon (and my charmed/hex post was a bit of a joke. It’s not a blatant rip off, but they are fairly similar), but I honestly don’t believe that digimon was a copy of pokemon. Sure, both had monsters and both evolved and both had humans and stuff, but pokemon was all about a giant game; a sport that involved capturing creatures and training them, forcing them to become strong enough to compete in giant tournaments in order to see who the best trainer was. But digimon was about creatures who lived in a different world from our own, and when this world was threatened, humans were enlisted and paired with one monster in order to combine their powers and allow the digimon to reach a higher, more powerful state (not really an evolution, because they could go back. I think of it more as a limit from FF) in order to defeat their enemies.

Digimon were also sentient, able to speak English and interact with humans on a level equal to said humans. Pokemon seemed to react on instinct only, and when they were captured, they became like dogs: able to do "tricks" but still had those basic instincts.

Back to topic. Later today I’m buying Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune for PS3. Its getting many great AAA reviews. And the demo is hella fun.

Totally the same? Obviously not.

But it’s crazy to me to say that they aren’t comparable, or that it wasn’t intended as a Pokemon rip-off. I don’t mean rip-off in the sense that it was an exact copy (obviously they’d have been sued if that was the case), but it was certainly an imitation of Pokemon. It’s pretty understandable too, given Pokemon’s popularity.

I’m not saying Digimon isn’t a good series or even that the anime isn’t better than Pokemon’s- I haven’t seen enough of either series to really make a judgment call on that.

I guess I don’t get why people are so defensive about this. 🙁 It’s pretty normal for people to rip off of anything and anything in the entertainment series, and sometimes, the rip-offs can surpass the original.

The only things Pokemon related I’ve ever gotten really into are the video games and the card game, and I got paid to do one of them. 😉 I don’t think I’m especially biased here.

Well, you could try changing the entire theme. There should be sites out there where you can get these – google Pocket PC themes. I myself am using the T-Mobile theme that I extracted from the MDA Vario II ROM(a rebranded HTC TyTN) on my Dopod 838Pro (another rebranded HTC TyTN).

Failing that, well, you could google for a theme maker.

Only watch the movie if you played the first Silent Hill. When my friend and I watched it in theaters, we crapped our pants and started going on like fanboys at how the sets were built exactly like in the first SH. The makers of this movie did their homework.

Comprised of interactive lessons, teacher’s guides, and other materials, the "Internet Safety Program" is suitable for lower and upper elementary grade students and will be available through a special online portal on Pokemon Learning League(TM), the award-winning online suite of standards-based animated, interactive lessons in language arts, math, science, and life skills.

Students use the Internet daily — often for hours at a time — for information, entertainment and a way to communicate with people around the globe. Internet safety, particularly in the interest of protecting children, is paramount in today’s technology driven, globalized world. It was a key topic at the U.N. Internet Governance Forum held in late November in Brazil, where high-ranking government officials, information technology experts and civic societies gathered to discuss Internet-related public policy issues.

Last year, Virginia became the first state to mandate public schools to teach Internet safety. To help schools and districts take a step toward meeting this goal, officials with the Department of Education collaborated with the Pokemon Learning League team to combine sound educational practices with the enduring popularity of Pokemon characters to teach students essential skills for studying and playing online safely.

"We are very pleased to be able to make this outstanding resource available to schools as they implement their Internet safety programs," said Tammy McGraw, director of the Office of Educational Technology at the Virginia Department of Education. "It effectively supports the guidelines for Internet safety issued by our agency last year and enables us to leverage the tremendous appeal of the Pokemon characters to help students become safe and responsible Internet users."

"Educators are looking for ways to provide students with Internet access while protecting them from inappropriate material and online predators," said Yves Saada, vice president of interactive media for Pokemon USA. The "Internet Safety Program" consists of three interactive lessons, upper and lower elementary lesson plans and unit quiz, tips for parents and guardians, a printable Internet safety certificate for students, and a printable poster to remind students how to stay safe online. Upper elementary and lower elementary teacher’s Guides are provided so that educators may best integrate the Pokemon Learning League lessons into their classroom planning.

Guided by an advisory board of experienced educators and education experts, Pokemon Learning League lessons guide students through a three-step approach to learning: an animated, narrative tutorial (Watch), guided practice (Try) and an interactive challenge (Apply). there is very little battling with monsters, and when there is, it’s a very big challenge (sometimes it’s better to just run by them). but the game isn’t really about the fighting; it’s about the atmosphere. and all these little details add to the game’s atmosphere. for example, the girl walks a little hunched over with her hands clutched to her chest, all the while glancing nervously about. and the music is amazing. it definitely ups the creepy factor 100%. it makes you scared to even turn the corner.

and the situation with the kids is creepy as hell. i can’t say anything for risk of spoilers, but believe me when i say that those kids will freak you the fuck out. and the things they do…*shudders*

overall, i’d say the game is excellent. it could use a few tweaks here and there (what game couldn’t), but for the most part, it’s good.

(for those in europe (more specifically engand, i think) may have trouble finding the game, since it was banned)

I fail to see the purpose in buying spare parts for a system that is currently on the edge of obsolecence. If something should fail, which is not all that likely if you are at all careful, it could very well cost less to build a new system that it did to buy the spare parts for the current one.

Regardless, you clearly have too much spare money for your own good and should donate it all to me.

The specs of this PC are far from obsolete. It’s an AMD X2 3800+ with 2GB of RAM. Has a 7900GT in there too which can still hold its own when it come to gaming. The thing is also running at stock so I can push it even further should I feel the need to.

A few months ago I went up to Barnes & Noble, and bought a Superman book, that had all of the old black & white comics in it, you know, from the newspapers. Got in the car and opened my bag, then realized, I’d bought the third book. I need to buy the other two. Great comics though. I think Superman might be my favorite comic… and I’m not just saying that ’cause you like him too.

I was never planing on importing the DualShock 3 by mail, then I stopped by my local buy/sell/trade game shop a block from my apartment to check out some old NES and SNES games, (yes, they have them regularly in stock), and when I went to pay for Athena, I saw the DS3 hanging there. So I took it home.

They’re the same except the PS3 sixaxis controller has bluetooth wireless and has motion sense capabilities – "sixaxis" is the name for the motion sense, but no "DualShock" which is the rumble capabilities. But in Japan last month they finally came out with the DualShock 3 Sixaxis. We gotta wait in the US until next spring.

I was at the store with my parental unit and I saw the newest edition of Shonen Jump, featuring the new season/or alternate time skip thing of Naruto–AND Ulquiorra from Bleach. That was a serious plus.

It’s a gaming rig. It HAS to have good RAM. So if I have replace the motherboard, I’ll need an Asus SLI compatible motherboard (not hard to get, but not cheap, and other brand boards won’t do because the video cards are Asus-made NVidias and I want that Asus-exclusive auto-optimize feature that are on Asus NVidia motherboards and only work with Asus-made Nvidia video cards), a new CPU(not hard to get and cheap, but not bargain price), and new RAM(which will kill me because I have to import good RAM, good RAM are more expensive locally than buying off the internet).

Resident Evil 4 can suck my balls. it was not a resident evil at all. as a game on its own, yes, it’s good. slap the name resident evil on it, and it immediently sucks. it contained no aspects of the previous installements, and can barely be called survival horror. (i’m just ranting cause i’m upset with the direction the series is taking. the epitome is code veronica, imo)

You’re right about that. Code Veronica and Resident Evil (first of the name) are the 2 best in the series as far as plot goes. But RE4 is the best when it comes to gameplay and game mechanics IMO. The 3D view and the control method make the game so much better than the older games. I also disagree with you for the difficulty. They were all easy, and RE4 is no exception.

You want a hard game? Try Gradius V, Ninja Gaiden or even harder… Contra 4. 😛

Okay, let me try to rationalize this. I have been trying very hard to keep some level of sanity and good decision making in my life, this year. I divorced myself from Square-Enix (apparently not, though, it currently seems. poo on a stick). Money and this time of the year tend to get the best of me, however. They are alluring and seductive mistresses to whom I fold time and time again.

Get this. I had the hairbrained idea that I was going to buy a PSP. Yes, I know, I’m kicking myself in the wake of that foolish plan, I assure you. The reasons? The port of Tactics and Silent Hill: Origins (which looks fantastic. Please let that get a PS2 port like the GTA psp titles, PLEEEEZ). But, I saved myself from that folly. I didn’t save myself from this one.

It’s a lesser of two evils (read: stoopids) thing. Poo.

I loved FFXII, I had so much fun playing it, despite the fact it was a little too easy even with Active Time Battle enabled.

All of them are great albums but The Lost Lolli is the best. I also got Guitly by Ayumi Hamasaki and PLAY by Namie Amuro but they haven’t arrived yet.

I paid a bit more than I originally had budgeted for a monitor, but after playing with several difference LCDs recently, I’m glad I coughed up an extra $65. This thin h has the best real-world response time to RTC error ratio I’ve heard of and the best viewable angle I’ve seen in a TN matrix. Brightness and contrast are good, but nothing special.

I wish they would have made a version that did not include built in speakers. Probably paid $20 for a feature I’ll never use.

It’s my favorite but I think her next Japanese album will change that.

V.Smile Pocket. One wonders how it got the pocket moniker. Certainly doesn’t fit into my pants pocket the way my DS Lite does. It has a crappy LCD display (ancient PSTN based LCD, and thus blurs and ghosts when there’s lots of action on screen), plus, it’s mono only. And at it’s price, an extra US$15 could’ve gotten me a modded PSP. However, for what’s it worth, it’s games features a lot of speech samples (which I find lacking on games out for the DS/GBA), it has a unique technology that allows one to flip the D-Pad and action button, and it’s size and shape doesn’t give me RSI as much as my DS Lite did. And oh, I needed it to run a particular Care Bears game I bought of eBay.

Is echostar a good brand? I’ve never heard of it. Also, are you sure 450w is going to be enough for the rig? I made a miscalculation once, and ended up having to spend more money on a higher capacity PSU a while later.

As far as the brand it’s just average I would have gone for a better one but, I couldn’t find a cheap one. I hear the only complaint is a loud fan, but you can replace the PSU fan.

I bought some Cadburys Old Jamaica Rum and Raisin chocolate. Just came back from vacation, and those are extremely hard to find anywhere else other than duty free shops over here. Also, a bottle of Hooch orange-flavored booze, which I drank an hour ago and am beginning to feel the effects (I seldom drink, hence even a little bit of alcohol can pretty much cause me to mumble incoherently for a while).

If people like having a motherboard that has pretty lights and has a heatsink that gets to too hot to touch temps… this is the board for you. It also is unbelievably fucking shit when it comes to overclocking quads… and the Supreme FX II "onboard sound" that you need to plug into it, was warped so I had to bend it to fit it on the PCI slot and have the ports properly exposed and set in the expansion slot….

If you’re looking for a 780i motherboard…. don’t. Wait for the 790i chipsets and pray they’re better than these…

lol I ended up with my fair shit from impulse buys.

Well, for me, when building a new PC, I don’t have as much funds as I’d like to have (especially after binging on eBay), so it takes time to save up for that. Hence I have time to do research. Also, I don’t build new PCs often, so I have to make sure I made the right choice as the result will stick around for years to come.

I read over a dozen reviews on it from different sources. The issues that are popping up everywhere now are coming from personal users from the hardcore overclocking scene.

It doesn’t matter, I’ll just get a dual core and clock it to 4.0GHz and then keep it for a year until the new Nehalem chips are released.

All I need now is a powersupply and 2 x 500GB HDDs for storage and my computer will be complete.

Well, if you’re going to overclock the thing, I recommend a good PSU. You don’t want the PSU to go off with a bang during a heated multiplayer match.

yeah, ive heard it has its fair share of problems. My XFX 680i board is more then adequate right now. best board ive ever had, overclocks good, and is ultra stable and no Vista issues, whatsoever.

also, my latest purchase was a new pair of shoes.

Yeah that was the main reason for originally going with the ASUS over the eVGA and XFX. ASUS’ driver/BIOS support is normally fantastic.

I finally got around to building the bloody thing after I purchased my PSU and then installed/updated everything to latest.

I’ve done a really modest OC with the CPU atm. Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 2.0GHz stock is not at…. *drumroll* 2.4GHz… :/

Since I leave my PC on 24/7 I’ll see how it goes after a few days then I’ll look at pushing it further.

@Stenchlord I suggest a Antec PSU their PSUs are top notch, stylish, and have the best reputation. But as a result it may be a bit pricey so I’d suggest eBay, just get one with a warranty/return policy.

I’ve purchased a Corsair HX-620W Modular PSU.

Corsair and Antec have their PSUs made by the same company. Stock design is from out of the Seasonic factories, Antec and Corsair then do a little modification here and there and then rebadge and sell. All three have the 5 year warranty from each respective company 🙂

I was really interested in the XFX as I’ve been really happy with XFX in the past. e.g. My 8600GT OC out-doing my 7900GT OC and I’ve now purchased an XFX 8800GT 512MB OC Alpha Dog.

I would have gone the eVGA over the XFX though as XFX only supply a 2 year warranty compared to…

Agreed. RAM is pretty cheap nowadays. If you can cough up an extra US$50 or so for more RAM, that’ll do.

Heh, I drank out of those exclusively between classes during my college years. I’m okay with them, but at one time I pushed the button for Milo (a chocolate malt drink) and got in return a cup full of hot water and dead ants :O . I threw the cup away, and although I didn’t complain (only cost me 70 cents, which wan’t too big a deal for me), I think someone else did because the machine was gone the next day xD .

Depends on how your gaming rig is performing. The reason for good cable management is mostly for airflow. As long as you have good airflow it doesn’t overly matter too much.

I do it cause I’m an anal bastard who likes having everything neat and tidy… cept my room. If you’ve got adequate airflow then it’s fine, if not though I’d suggest looking into a way to organise it. You can buy extension cables for whatever is coming up short.

I fixed up the cable management in my friends case (didn’t hide the cables like mine, just shifted them neatly aside) and his case temperature dropped by 6 degrees celcius which is huuge.

I’ve now got my CPU at 2.8GHz, crashes at 2.9GHz without a volt mod and I don’t really want to change volts yet. No need for the extra performance. Currently get 11000 in 3dMark06 which isn’t bad for a single graphics card and a pretty much bottom of the line CPU.

Most definitely. For the majority of users who won’t be pushing their PCs the difference is negligible but for those who are expecting to push their computers as hard as they’ll go, 6 degrees celcius is a pretty big factor.
