Super Mario Sunshine was the first of the 3D Mario games I ever remembering playing and I got really into the game like I haven’t done before for a mario game (except for Super Mario World).
All the other mario games like the original and the others age good but I get bored of them sometimes after playing over and over and losing. It’s probably having to start from the beginning of the world when I die which I don’t like in the first 3 games.
I was a fan of ‘rpgs’ even then and to see Mario in a fascimile thereof was very WIN. Geno
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Definitely my 2 fav Mario games. And neither of them are in the poll… :/
From that poll it would be a close call between SMW and SMB3. Haven’t played Sunshine.
world > 64 > 3 > sunshine > 1 > 2
i hope to play mario rpg someday
Sure, the first mario might’ve gotten me hooked on mario, but Mario RPG is just teh bomb
Super Mario Bros 2 is most likely not there because it’s not a Mario Bros game to begin with (Nintendo took Doki Doki Panic as a framwork for their US release because they thought the US gamers couldn’t handle the difficulty of the real Super Mario Bros 2—which was called "The Lost Levels" over here and was included in Super Mario All Star). The official Super Mario Bros 2 certainly should have been put on the list. This game was fucking hard, but the levels design was great!
I have to go with Super Mario 3 on this one.
And I’m eagerly awaiting Super Mario Galaxy. I have great hopes for this game!
2d: Super Mario World
ever? Super Mario 64
i know Mario is best at home in his 2d purity but ever since i saw him dreaming of pasta and ravioli in SM64 it has been one of my favorite game of all time
There aren’t many Mario I games I WOULDN’T play except for the sports ones (although I don’t mind Strikers Charged) and I don’t think I really have a favourite. I’ve probably put the most hours in Mario Kart DS and Super Mario World, though.
As for WHAT’S BETTER SMB3 OR SMW
I’ve never been too fond of Super Mario Bros. 3. It is probably because I always end up cheating and using the flutes so I jump to a crazy difficulty all of a sudden and I am still pretty bad and stuff. One day I’ll get around to actually FINISHING SMB3 but for now I prefer SMW (and even SMB1).
Super Mario 64 is pretty good too but imo its replayability is pretty darn low. That’s just me, though.
Calling it a part of the main lineage when you know its history is completely wrong to me.
Super Mario Bros 2 (US) is Doki Doki Panic patched with Mario Bros characters, nothing more. The only things it shares with Mario Bros is its creator, Miyamoto, and the fact that the characters can jump.
I’ve always enjoyed 2, and when I learned how it came to be, it didn’t really bother me since I was never a huge fan of the original (I spent much more time with Zelda :)), but I will concede that it isn’t really main lineage when looked upon in that light.
It has always been interesting to me the way 3 iconic series changed things in major ways for their first sequels. Mario Bros. 2, Simon’s Quest, and Link’s Adventure are very different games. I prefer two out of those 3 to the originals, oddly enough :p
It just seems fun.
Especially in the underground level where you cheat and go up on the roof to warp to another level.
Then if your playing with a friend you can get way ahead of them lol.
But I have to say may most favorites are Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Sega.
I want to play Super Mario RPG…
Um. NO. Simon’s Quest is my favorite NES game.
god have mercy.
No, I’m really sorry he didn’t get the chance to do that, because I did, and man I had such good times 😀
Mario Bros music! This guy is a G!
By the way, Mario World is my favorite.
…
But RPG is a close second
I’ll let this stay for now, though ^_^
Yes, I do play Mario in Brawl.
I’ll let this stay for now, though ^_^
its either you closing revived topics because someone actually cared to look for a topic of his/her interest
or that decepticon addict BASHING said user because he made a topic which has already been made, and said topic has been abandoned for over a year.
everyone, chill!.
i prefer to post in revived threads that catch my interest, than to make one and get bashed (of course, only if said topic doesnt exist).
oh and on the topic, super mario bros 3, super mario rpg, super mario land 2 legend of the six gold coins and wario land: super mario land 3 (yes, it IS a mario game)
or that decepticon addict BASHING said user because he made a topic which has already been made, and said topic has been abandoned for over a year.

I said that to let the reviver know the policies of the forum, such that they wouldn’t be surprised if 8 month old (or older) threads they revived were closed, if they weren’t adding anything of value or there was a newer thread on the same topic. Perhaps I could have said that explicitely instead of a in a cheeky way, but here we are~
I let this stay open because there isn’t another thread here like this, and because they responded with something of value.
kk? ^_^
Fuck them too!
The "classic" levels in that game were pure joy.
Though their tendency to dissolve in water kinda sucked. Then again Sunshine would have been too easy, imo.
Speaking of SMB3, I played it recently on the Wii’s VC with the Wiimote sideways. Never. Again. Just doesn’t feel right. =/
Did it have Mario and Luigi in it? Yes.
Did it have Princess Peach(Toadstool) in it? Yes
Did it have the Koopa Troppa and the other Mario game enemies in it? yes
Therefore it IS a Mario game. Just because the gameplay was taking from another game doesn’t matter. If it did, then Mario RPG isn’t a real Mario game either.

You’re fucking stupid. The sprites were just swapped.
I’m pretty sure there were NO koopa troopas either. Nor any other Mario enemies.
You fail. Jackass.
And Mario 2 is a Mario game get over it.
All Seeing Eye, if you’re ignorant to these facts, please don’t shove it down our throats like you are doing right now.
Educate yourself for a change.
Super Mario RPG isn’t the same, by the way. Since it was created from the ground up to be a Mario RPG game by Squaresoft and Nintendo, and that’s what it was in the end, unlike Doki Doki Panic and the US version of SMB2.
You won’t change my mind on the matter, so don’t bother trying to. This thread failed. Period.
The Super Mario Bros 2 you’re mentioning wasn’t created by Miyamoto. Nintendo USA are the ones responsible for its "Mario" treatment.
The original Doki Doki Panic game was indeed created by Miyamoto, but he is not responsible for its Mario treatment.
It was then re-released in Japan as Super Mario USA. It should tell you a lot.
Now tell me. Do you concider Final Fantasy Mystic Quest as a real entry in the Final Fantasy franchise?
Colossal fail.
To say that Mario 2 is a "real" Mario game because it has Mario in it and that Mario RPG is not because it "wasn’t traditional" is a case of applying two different standards, both of which are applicable in the case of the other.
In other words, you’re talking out your ass, and any fool with half a brain can see that it’s utter bullshit. You fail.
Also, this argument fails. Mario games have not been known for conforming to a single formula, so calling Mario 2 by that name, regardless of how it was originally developed, is perfectly fair on the grounds that it does have the Mario characters. If you claim otherwise, you’re doing nothing but arguing semantics, which is something that no one can ever win.

it is not a mario game.
its a cheap copy-pasta of doki doki panic.
they just edited the characters.
that doesnt make it a mario game.
sure, birdo, the shy guys and all those characters were absorbed into the mario universe, but tell me, WHERE have we seen wart (sp?) again?
a quick dramatization:
nintendo of japan (NOJ): hey, we have made super mario bros 2! lets send the data to our slaves at nintendo of america! (NOA).
NOA: cool, we have recieved the data, now lets test the game
*tests*
NOA: holy bologny (.. the 80’s…) this game is hard! no way 4 year old kids can beat this, no sir! hey, what about that other game our god miyamoto did? toki moki something? it seemed fun and interesting… what? oh, yeah, doki doki panic, the one we were gonna release as "saladin’s adventure" (fake title).
hey, the characters look like mario, luigi, toadstool and toad! lets just paint them and make them look like mario and CO. and VOILA! we have ourselves super mario bros 2! no one will question the completely different gamestyle for at least 10 years… MUAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA.
*months later*
NOJ: it seems the bastardized mario bros 2 sold well in USA, so lets bring it over here and name it super mario USA, so its not to be confused with the REAL mario bros 2.
the end.
Hynad. Like I said, It doesn’t matter how it came about, it’s still a Mario game. Because MARIO is in it. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is completely a different story. That game was made by Square of America. It wasn’t made by the people behind the real Final Fantasy Series. It was just a game that they thought would sell if it had the Final Fantasy name. With that said, I enjoyed Mystic Quest and think it’s cruelly underrated.
Catastrope. It’s still a Mario game. And what does not seeing Wart again have to do with it?
Sunshine, 64, adn Galaxy are my top 3
Prak: Hi!
Edit: All Seeing Eye: Double standards much? You claim FF:MQ is a different story because it was created by SQUARE of America so it isn’t part of the FF deal; Yet when Hynad and CATASTROPHE point out that Mario 2 was a copy/paste/sprite swap job from Nintendo of America it’s part of the Mario games? The fuck kind of logic is that? Selective reasoning? Fuck off.
ahhh, FFMQ is a completely different story…
developed by NOA? mmm, where have i heard that before? doki something and mario comes to mind… i dont know why i see a 2 there but…
I misunderstood. Apologies.

And on the note, the banging of my head against the wall commences. If you don’t consider Mystic Quest to be a Final Fantasy game because of who made it, then you also have to disqualify a bunch of other FF games because they weren’t made by the same people who made the first one.
Prak. Were they made by Square of Japan? MY point is MQ was just a game they gave the title to. It wasn’t created to be Final Fantasy to begin with.
Edit: Obvious reply to A.S.E. and not Prak.
They are not part of what is called the "core" titles like Mario 1-2-3, World, World 2, 64, Sunshine and Galaxy.
Doki Doki Panic is not a Mario game. Period.

i see what you did there…

If you feel that way, then fine. But to me, Doki Doki Panic was turned into a Mario game, therefore it is a Mario game.
Emphatically insisting does not make it so.

Doki was made into a Mario game. It wasn’t just given the Mario title, but still had the original Doki content. MQ is an example of the latter. Get it now?
Then by your logic MQ was turned into a Final Fantasy game, therefore it is a Final Fantasy game.
If Miyamoto would have wanted Doki Doki Panic to be a Mario game, he would have made it as such from day one. We both know it’s not what he did.
According to various sources. Miyamoto gave the okay for Doki being made into a Mario game, because he thought the Lost Levels would be too hard for American gamers.
So yeah Call it MarioUSA, Call it Mario 2, call it whatever. Just make sure you call it a MARIO game.
So yeah Call it MarioUSA, Call it Mario 2, call it whatever. Just make sure you call it a MARIO game.
according to other sources, miyamoto didnt even knew doki was made into smb2
Just give it up, you’ll never win with these cats….
My favourite Mario games aren’t here. And why is there Super Mario RPG? It’s not even a Nintendo creation. 🙁
Edit: As for the listed games, I say SMB3. It was challenging, had very nice levels and introduced Dry Bones and Thwomps, my favourite Mario enemies ever.
Oh, and Angry Sun. It had fucking Angry Sun. I loved that thing, even though it killed me everytime.
no.
never actually called them 2 and 3.
mostly because i didnt like final fantasy back then
Sherlock. Another reason this thread fails. The Paper Mario series isn’t an option either.
Discodan. I’m not trying to win anything. Because I know a huge majority of people agree with me, even some at Nintendo.
And Geno sucks. Yes, he really does. Deal with it.
Although, I totally suck at platform games…and given the limited amount of choices (it would’ve been nice if the poll had the "OTHER" choice)…… my pick would be SMB 3 (NES). The game had a lot variety of levels/items/characters that made it fun for me to play.
Anyway, my official favorite Mario games are Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64. They’re so freakin’ fun to play!
that the series needed for groth, plus it kicked ass.
I am quite suprised that Super Mario Galaxy and The Super Mario
Land games aren’t here. oh well. You can’t have them all I
guess.
Can’t say anything for why Land wasn’t added.
Hynad, Super Mario Bros. 2 is a Mario game because it is. Like, it is called Super Mario Bros. 2. It may have originally been another game but the moment Nintendo decided to do what they did it made it a Mario game even if you want to say it isn’t. I am pretty sure every game that has "Mario" in it is a Mario game to some degree.
As far as this poll is concerned whatever I voted for is a lie. I simply can’t decide. Super Mario Galaxy though is a definite no, it’s a great game but Super Mario 64 I found that better so it wins, and then all the NES ones yes even SUPER MARIO in UNITED STATES they are all I think good if only for the nostalgic value but Super Mario World man I didn’t enjoy it too much I liked Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island a lot though.
If you consider Suikoden II a Mario game, I would vote for that one without hesitation.
