The file size is correct; the tracks are MIDIs, not .mp3s. MIDIs take up significantly less space than .mp3s, so an hour or so of music can be less space than a MS Word document.
That said, does anyone know of a good way to convert them to mp3s?

Use XMPlay with MIDI input plugin.
Use XMPlay with MIDI input plugin.
And for game music MIDI files, you can get them all at mirsoft.
