Apart from me and the guy who wrote their Wikipedia article, does anybody else actually know of these guys/like any of their stuff ?_?
who are they
I read about them on a music message board once! I think there was an argument about whether their name was Beat Happening or The Beat Happening.
That is the extent of my knowledge.
You should enlighten us further, Meph.
They’re a three piece, two guys and a girl, and they don’t really have a lead vocalist as such, each taking turns to fill in that roll, but one guy does sing slightly more than the others.
They are a bit of a rag-tag band, they used to have to borrow a drum kit from local mates whenever they played gigs, cos they didn’t have one of their own.
Musically, they’re technically not great musicians. They weren’t playing instruments very long before they started making music, and they aren’t the best singers either. TECHNICALLY, they should sound awful, but when its all put together, it sounds really simple, basic and like, the pure essence of music. I’d describe them as sounding like The Crash Test Dummies, only not as professional and slightly more twee.
Belle and Sebastian + Crash Test Dummies = Beat Happening
BUT I CANT REALLY DESCRIBE THEM WITH WORDS so download some stuff.
They are not bad at all and I will listen some more!
It’s what you would hear on a college radio station’s "indie rock" time slot.
jeff mangum’s voice is like one of my favourite singing voices =\ =/
that’s pretty true cause i do an indie slot in my college radio, and this really seems like the kind of thing that’d be played, still though its pretty good
But once I started hearing 4-5 songs like this in a row, I start to think 1 of 2 things:
Either these "bands" are too "artsy fartsy" for my tastes.
OR
They really do suck, and are simply called "intelligent" to justify the bands "bohemian" college students fan base.
hallo mr patterson.
it has been a while since you graced us with your presence!

well, its nice to remember the little people now and then, lol. seriously though, broadband just became available where i live, so that explains absence, living in the middle of fucking nowhere.
yes it is a good singing voice, but if you’re going by the traditional definition of "being able to sing", jeff mangum would not fall under this definition. being able to sing doesn’t lead to being able to a) convey emotion in singing or b) being interesting to listen to, both of which jeff can do.
the man can hold a note like nobody’s business though. prty good range too.
But I think I know what you mean. I guess I don’t care much whether or not someone is technically proficient with their voice, as long as it sounds awesome.
