questions about parties

hey im replaying ff8 for the 8th time or so and i was wondering if anyone remembers of a time besides disc two in galbadia prison or on the missile base where squall isnt in the party. im trying to keep his levels low but still teach ifrit str. bonus.

desert prison… when you only have Quistis Selphie and Zell. But it really doesn’t matter…. When you get the ragnarok you can go to the island of hell and just kill monsters… they give excellent xp and you can level everyone in no time… Squall owns always keep him in the party…

You’re replaying the game for the 8th time and you can’t remember for yourself?

i dont really have a choice in whether i can keep squall in the party or not, thats my point. i want to keep him low now so when i do decide to level him up he gets strength up vitality up and hp up with every level. and yes, ive played many times before but the last time i did was about 2 or 3 years ago. my memory isnt all that great ive been using too many gfs.

On Disc 3, Squall goes with Rinoa and another party member into space. When Lunatic Pandora passes over Esthar, Squall is not in the party. But then again, you may have to rely on him heavily when you have to rid the ragnarok of the propagators.

That’s the only other case I can remember. What you could do is KO him, and give any GFs he has to other party members. Then, just play through the game with his HP to 0 so he never gains experience.

yea i was thinking about doing that. i could even kill 2 party members and level up strength and stuff on just one, then kill that person and do it again for another one.

opppppsies…. lol i was reading to fast……. umm sometime during the balamb garden invasion you can… Like right when galbadia garden starts fighting with balamb you switch parties alot…

Isn’t there a status effect that stops you from gaining EXP?

FFIX has one such effect, Virus, but I don’t think VIII does.

Killing Squall off seems like your best bet. So what if he comes back to life? Just kill him again. Personally, I think it’d be good therapy.

What does Zombie do?

Turns you into a zombie, vulnerable to holy attacks. I can’t honestly remember if it stunts growth, though. It could be a possibility.

zombie aslo makes you weak to recovery attacks. potion, cure, life all do damage instead of heal. and you still gain everything if youre infected with it. the only thing that i can think of that stops exp without killing the person is petrify or stone, and that stops ap too.

actually now that i think about it, petrify carries over into the next battle…

Here’s a list of times when you have a non-Squall party:

Disc 1: Deling City + Sewers (Quistis, Zell, Selphie)

Disc 2: D-District Prison (Zell, Selphie, Quistis/Irvine’s Party), Missile Base (Selphie’s Party), Balamb vs. Galbadia (Zell’s Party)

Disc 3: Esthar/Lunatic Pandora (Zell’s Party)

Disc 4: Ultimecia’s Castle (Second Party)

I think that’s all…

When dealing with a weaker party, I often like to simply equip Diablos’s No Encounters and otherwise rely on strong junctions for a boss fight or anything like that.
