FF IV totally stuck! help!!

After beating the calbirna dolls and being re-united with rydia, the dwarf king tells me to go to the tower of bab-il. When i got there there are tanks outside who shoot at the tower. I go into the tower and I am on a bridge. I walk up but the way is blocked by this strange explosion-looking thing. When i examine it, there are more tank shots all around but my way is still blocked. I can’t get past it no matter what i do?

I have the playstation (ps1) version of FF IV in the double-cd "Final Fantasy Chronicles." I am running it on a PS2.

Have you defeated the mad scientist and his creation? You need a key to get into a locked room, then you can leave and continue the game. You get it from the scientist.

where is the mad scientist?

Have you reached the point where you watch Golbez escape? Then walk around afterward until the mad scientist tries to stop you. Be preppared for battle once again afterward.

no i can’t get to the mad scientist.

look at the four way intersection on the map. just south of that is a explody-thing-icon that blocks me from reaching the intersection. when i examine it is causes more explosions around the tower but then it just re-appears and won’t let me past.

is this a bug or did i forgot to do something?

I already beat calbirna and golbez and got rydia back. the dwarf king told me to go out the back way to get to the tower and i did that.

I don’t remember any "exploding" thingie, you could be the victim of a bug! D=
There isn’t anymore for you to explore? I just went over the whole tower when I got to it.
