What do you consider your favorite and least favorite dubs?

Well, if one never made the mistake of watching anything in multiple languages, the quality of dubs is usually only a matter of opinion. Also, Hellsing.

Although I didnt watch it dubbed, in every DVD review of Elfen Lied they say that the dub was really good.

Dont ever watch Naruto dubbed :-\

La Chevalier D’Eon (I find it kinda jarring to watch it in Japanese than in English.)
FullMetal Alchemist (Had a very good dub, and it didn’t make my ears bleed.)
Utawarerumono (Has a great dub so far.)

Bible Black (It was hysterically bad. I know it’s a hentai anime, so dub-wise I shouldn’t have expected much, but COME ON.)

This has to be the worst dub ever. But then again, it was horrible in Japanese too. XD

Not anime or manga but the dub of Transformers Takara: Headmasters is really poor. the japanese language track is miles better and the robots sound like robots

I’ll give you Seras being terrible, but the rest of the characters are damn near perfect.

EDIT: And the new OVA series kicks the shit out of the old one, so even the criticism of Seras doesn’t hold up as much anymore.

A lot of dubs are extremely bad, to name a few there are Trigun, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Elfen Lied. However, there are good ones, though in very limited numbers. Example: Digimon and Hellsing.

You want a bad dub? Try Spider Riders. Not a very good anime (but not one of my worst), but it got torn to shreds by 4Kids. I hate that group.

Best dub? Vision of Escaflowne. That anime just rocked, and still is one of my old favorites.

The worst dub I’ve ever heard was Saikano, but then the original Japanese was particularly bad as well so eh. Galaxy Angel didn’t really do anything for me either.

Best would probably be Cowboy Bebop. Excel Saga is pretty good too.

Sailor Moon’s dub. I’m usually not too large of a dub hater, but good god that one was horrid.

Worst Dub: For me it has to be FLCL. God that was atrocious.

Best: Cowboy Bebop did a pretty good job. And Spike just has the best voice.

But I dunno about you guys, but one dub I can’t live without is the Golden Boy anime. That shit was well done. "STUDY STUDY STUDY!"

Sailor Moon dub. . .first anime I ever saw(when it was on USA network way back when) and came close to turning me off of anime forever because of Usagi’s English voice actress.

The best is Full Metal Panic! because the voices fit really well.

The worst is .Hack//Legend Of The Twilight because the voices were headache-inducing.

As far as really crappy dub jobs go? The worst will always be anything by 4Kids. Shaman King, Naruto, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh… Absolute shit.

What really sucks about it is those are some of my favorite animes and mangas. Of course, the manga translations (and editing) always leave a bit to be desired – fansubs and scanslations FTW!

While I’m sure this thread has been rehashed over and over and over again in your 3 years on this forum, and I’m also sure that you have discussed AT LENGTH your opinions somewhere is your amazing 8,000 posts, you failed to mention them here. I didn’t say that all dubs are automatically inferior – that would imply that the subtitled version is superior. I said they were crap. That doesn’t mean that the subtitled version can’t be crappier. I just watched the Death Note live action movie last night – the sub job was… not so good. Well, really, it was beyond not-so-good. It was utter shit. I have no intention of recanting my statement that all dubs are crap because they are dubs. I just really don’t like dubs – they never flow right, you loose the subtleties of the original script, you lose culture and intention, and depending on how bad it is, the translation and voice acting can completely change the entire movie (not in a good way). I do applaud companies that offer an option on the DVD’s of subbed or dubbed. Back in the days of VHS, there wasn’t that option. I especially applaud companies that actually try to hire qualified voice actors instead of just whoever will show up. Shit, now with AniDB, most high profile animes you can get subbed in several languages. I have heard horror stories from people overseas about animes that were translated to German from the English translation. The results were not pretty.

You obviously have not given recent dubs much of a chance to atone for the older ones. A lot more money and effort goes into them these days, and it shows in the quality.

I have taken notice of some of the Miyazaki dubs (specifically Howl’s Moving Castle, the latest, but also some of the previous movies as well), and they are not bad, but many of the cultural subtleties are completely lost, and voice inflections and such completely change the "feel" of some scenes. These are recent dubs, and no doubt a lot of money and effort went into them. They are still inferior to the subtitled versions of the same movies, by the same production house.

There are other movies and series I have seen that have obviously had a great dub team, a great budget, and great effort has been taken to do a great job… but compared to the subtitled versions, the dubs are STILL crap. This is the reason why my kids (the oldest is 12, the youngest is 4) watch the subtitled versions instead of the dubbed. If we wanted an American movie, we would watch one. We want the culture and intended art and flow behind what we watch, and we have found the only way to really do that is with the subtitled versions. Sometimes fan subs are even superior to official releases… even through subtitles many scenes can be completely altered by using a different choice of words than the creator intended.

All that is a long-winded way to say I’ll try it, and it may change my blanket statement to have a few exceptions. I still believe those exceptions to be few and far between, though.

I think you massively overestimate the number of shows that actually do have any significant Japanese culture in them. I’ve watched a lot of anime – both dubbed and subbed – in my time (as much as anyone here, I’m quite sure) and I know of very few shows that have lost any cultural significance in translation. I’m certain that if you tried to actually list them, you wouldn’t have a very long list.

As far as the ones Disney have dubbed are concerned, they have been handled pretty questionably in most cases. But then again, what else would you expect from Disney? Dubbing the Ghibli movies is nothing more than a side job for them. The companies that specialize in anime dubbing typically do a much better job.

Honestly, you should give some of the recent dubs a chance (just for the sake of fairness, even if you still prefer subs), especially the ones that aren’t being pumped out as fast as possible to be aired in the mainstream.

A few of the others that I’ve thought highly of in recent years were:

R.O.D the TV – Another good example of how proper accents can make a difference. Also a damn fine work in general.

Kamichu – If you want to see the Japanese culture conveyed properly in a dub, check this one out.

Full Metal Panic – Solid performances from pretty much the entire cast and a couple truly outstanding ones.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock: Endless Odyssey – If you’re familiar with the title character, you can’t go wrong here. A couple spotty performances by minor characters, but mostly a very strong sub.

And most recently, I’ve been picking up the DVDs of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, being the good supporter of the medium that I am and having downloaded fansubs while it was airing. Mostly very solid and almost perfectly captures the feel of the Japanese version.

I could list more, but I’d have to go rummage through my DVDs to pick some out. Alas, I’m too lazy.

I’ll start will Full Metal Panic, since I’ve been meaning to watch that one anyways. Having never seen it, I’ll watch the dub first (so it won’t be tainted) then the subs… Thanks!

I usually perfer the fan sub for Elfen Lied, it’s a little more litural and more insightful then the offical ADV.

But yeah the voice acting is pretty bad I perfer the Japanese actors but they’re not really top notch either. Wikipedia credits them as pretty bad too. IGN said they were good.

The dubs of Elfen Lied and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex are pretty good, and Hellsing Ultimate is much improved over the 13 episode TV series…

On a contrary note: I’m probably the only person who’ll say this, but I preferred the English dub of Rurouni Kenshin to the Japanese with subs version (GOD Kenshin’s voice in Japanese is so annoying!).

I normally don’t have much of a pblm with dub, but that one was by far the worst I have ever heard!

Azumanga had a good dub IMO.

Also Kannazuki no Miko has a good dub.

I don’t watch dubs. Not because I think they’re bad, just because I want to watch anime in Japanese. But I’ve heard the FMA dub a couple of times and I thought the voices were pretty close to the originals, so I guess I think that’s a good dub. Can’t really pick a bad dub.

Best: Fullmetal Alchemist. The voices were all good, I don’t remember any of them actually killing my ears at all. The dialogue was pretty good, everything seemed to be alright.

This is one of my favorites, but the dubs just raped everything beyond comprehension. I have never seen anything that changed so much between translation that it was completely unrecognizable, but this one just takes the cake.

Let me start with the DiC dub…

First of all, they cut about ten thousand episodes out… That was just ridiculous. Sailor Moon wasn’t meant to be a show for five-year-olds, but they canned every single episode that had anything derogatory in it. Of course, that’s probably for the best. I would’ve hated to see the editing they would have had to go through.

Now for the names… Amy, Raye, Mina – Ami, Rei, Minako = Just fine… And then we have LITA… WTF? Who names someone Lita? And then there’s the completely retarded name they gave the Dark Kingdom- "Negaverse." What the hell is a Negaverse? Let’s just make up everything we can, yay!

Another thing, no one could ever just "die." Everyone had to disappear or something else. Because people never die, everyone knows that.

I think I was destroyed on the inside a little bit after that one.

Oh, and on the subject of "Molly", what the hell was up with her accent? No one in Japan has that accent…

Oh wait. I forgot. DiC thought they had to completely erase any evidence that the series took place in Japan. They cut out scenes that had any type of Japanese characters on signs or anything. My question is, umm… Why? What was the point?

There was one good thing about the DiC dub. Usagi’s voice in the beginning was spot-on. Too bad that first VA only lasted about 10 episodes and then was replaced by the horrendous Terri Hawks. *throws up*

Now for the Cloverway dub. They at least didn’t cut out every episode that had a bit of violence, and that was a good thing. The thing that killed it for me was the terrible voice acting, namely Usagi’s and Ami’s. They were TERRIBLE! How did the girl who did Usagi’s voice get the job? She sounded like she was choking to death.

Oh, and "This is the most difficult challenge planet power has ever faced." What?! What the hell is planet power?!

One more thing was that Sailor Jupiter’s attack changed with every episode. Her attack name completely changed at random for no reason. I never understood any of this.

Well, that concludes my rant. Here’s a summary- Sailor Moon’s English dub was completely awful. 😀

I never watch anime dubbed. I only tried few times to see some anime dubbed by curiosity and I can say the worst dub I’ve ever listened to is Kare Karo. On the other hand, ADV Films made a suberb work on Nerima Daikon Brother (especially on the musical parts). It’s the only anime I wouldn’t mind watching the dub.

Sorry to be so blunt (not really), but you have absolutely no credibility in this discussion. As someone who proclaims to never watch dubbed anime, you cannot possibly have an informed opinion on the matter. Furthermore, if you’re really so asinine as to say the Kare Kano dub, which was generally well-received and regarded as one of the better dubs on the market, was bad, then your ignorance and bias in the matter are so severe that you should be avoiding it by as wide a margin as possible to keep people like me from ripping you to shreds.

Oh also, Pokemon is pretty good too. In terms of localization. The show’s crap, but I think it’s localized well. Well, before they changed the VA cast. I guess anytime they keep the openers makes it a great job in my mind.

Why? Volume 2. It ranks up there with the movie in the Ring for sheer evil….only it’s real. There is a demon who sounds just like Foghorn Leghorn. You know, the giant chicken from the old Looney Tunes cartoons, who was based on a parody of an American Southern politician nobody remembers…? *drinks a glass of water*

Think about it, what were they trying to say? That demons are wacky fun cartoon characters like Looney Tunes, so that parents will let their children watch the horrors that follow? That American Southern Politicians are demons from hell?

All of these points are arguable – whether or not you agree says a lot about how jaded you are, but one point can’t be argued with: Foghorn Leghorn trying to sound scary isn’t scary. For that matter, Devilman sounding like a 12 year old trying to sound scary isn’t scary either.

In fact, anyone trying to sound scary isn’t scary, because if they were really scary, they wouldn’t feel the need to prove how scary they are.

I’m willing to bet, that if anything, they’d be trying to reassure you that you’re completely safe…

That’s right, it was my gateway drug. I was just a kid at the time, living in the bible belt. No rock music. No kissing the opposite sex.

To say it was a revelation would be an understatement…

But here’s where it gets really interesting – it didn’t just hook me. It hooked my mom. Imagine a young woman who thinks hugs before marriage are questionable, and modern music is the devil’s whisper, hooked on the story of alien clones discovering love and music for the first time…

Now you get the power of the dub. One that can’t be seen if you only look at how faithful the writers were to the source material.

It’s very rare that I watch dubbed anime now, but a long time ago, the UK Sci-Fi channel showed late night anime – all dubbed stuff which I taped religiously. Blue Sonnet, Roujin-Z, Jin-Roh etc – great titles that you couldn’t find in the original back then. Apart from fifteening, the early manga dubs were pretty good. Anyway…

Worst: The new dub of Lupin III – bad voice casting and really dire translation.

Best: R.O.D the TV, Chobits, Haibane Renmei.

I fell in love with Patlabor 2 through the English dub and still prefer it to the Japanese version. Miyazaki said that he thought the French dub of Porco Rosso was superior to the Japanese original.

Well, the openings, that’s a hit-and-miss. They only showed two Japanese openings on the anime in Toonami (The Uncut DVD, of course, has all), and the openings were Haruka Kanata and Go!!. They created their own vid for Haruka Kanata and I believe Go was the same, but they extended the length of Haruka Kanata a lot…I didn’t like that at all. I mean, it’s like they’re hyping it or something. And those two openings, they are very common, so bleck. XD

Best: I would have to say Ranma 1/2. Well done acting that isn’t plain or over the top.

Worst: Desert Punk. Still trying to get the overuse of swearing out of my head.

The Prince of Tennis voice actors always feel a little flat to me, and some of the voices I just plain dislike, particularly Ryoma’s and Inui’s. The majority of the voices in Thumbelina are sufferable, but the heroine’s ruins the entire movie. She sounds more like an obnoxious little boy with a sore throat than anything else.

I think we just grow far too accustomed to how the Japanese seiyuu’s develop the character, and it severely influences how we handle any type of change. If someone watches the English version first, it also changes our perceptions of the character when we listen to them in Japanese.

Naruto: (watched subbed first, then dubbed)

I absolutely love Rock Lee’s Japanese seiyuu. The English actor isn’t bad, but I’m used to hearing him say certain phrases in a certain way, and the absence of that has the ability to totally change a scene. Gaara’s English voice actor is also fairly good, but it’s just not the same.

Bleach: (watched subbed first, then dubbed)

I’m a huge, huge fan of Hitsugaya’s Japanese voice. It’s grave, throaty, and mature, just like the character himself. I’ve heard SO much bashing of Hitsugaya’s English VA, but that’s only because so many people grew to love Hitsugaya through his seiyuu. The English VA sounds younger, more emotional. I can personally say I dislike this voice, just because he doesn’t sound as serious.

Trigun: (watched dubbed only)

My first anime; I found I’ve never had much of an urge to hear the Japanese voices. I think the dub is fairly good, at least as far as the main characters. That’s really all I need. If I feel a show has a decent-to-good dub, I’m far less inclined to seek out a comparison.

Rurouni Kenshin: (dubbed first, then subbed)

I think both versions have something to offer. I honestly don’t have too much of a preference, although the switch between Soujiro’s English VAs is very, very distracting. Both Kenshins have lovely voices, I think. The OVA voice casting is far inferior, and I must say the Japanese voices are much better than the English ones. But in the TV series, the English one is alright, though it has some rough spots.

I keep seeing people mention things like "This character has a Southern Accent" or something like that (Osaka from AzuDai was the first I saw), and it’s important to note that the Osaka Accent is equivalent to the Southern Accent in how people use it and react to it in Japanese media. Just a comment.

The vision of Escaflowne Dub was a travesty. The Naruto Dub is not nearly as bad as people keep saying (YOU try translating "dattebayo", there just isn’t an equivalent in english), and the Bleach dub is also quite good.

The Single worst Dub job I have ever had an experience with was the Macross "Do You Remember Love?" movie. A friend of mine somehow got a hold of a copy of the Japanese English Dub of this movie. It was put together as a teaching aid for college students learning English. Any bad dub that you can imagine (with a few exceptions) pales in comparison to the "Do You Remember Love?" dub.

I haven’t actually seen it, but I’ve heard that "Garzey’s Wing" also has a particularly bad Dub.

I will still watch dubbed stuff sometimes, but I was merely saying that generally I prefer original voice acting. Once in a while, a good dub will come, and I’ll watch that too, but again, that doesn’t happen very much (in my opinion).

When Fist of the North Star was re-released on DVD, did John Vickery come back and do the voice of Kenshiro? Because I’ve yet to watch it. And I’m talking about the old FotNS series, not the new one with all the CG that came out a few years back.

Generally I am opposed to people claiming some kind of superiority because they prefer subs to dubs. Nine times out of Ten, if there is a dub, I’d prefer to watch that. The exception, of course, is Naruto (Which has some quality Voice Actors, but atrocious writing and translation.)

Anyway, as to the actual topic, My favorite Dubs are:
DBZ (This should produce some "WOW YOU R TEH DUMB" yelling in my direction)

Yu Yu Hakusho – Say what you will about the series itself, but the sub is rather dull. I don’t know what the Japanese think of ‘Punks’ but all I’ve ever seen/read the Japanese version of Yusuke do or say is "Bastard" every once and awhile. The Dub adds true character to Yusuke and Kuwabara, and quirky things like strange accents on Villains. (read: Chu, the aussie suiken user, and Jin, with the most impossible to understand Irish accent.)

Most people spit on companies like Funimation, but really they should be praised for the work they actually put into some of their works. I hear people are quite pleased with the Fruits Basket dub, though I’ve never actually seen it myself.
My all time favorite would probably be FLCL. Excellent translation and dubbing. All around excellent show.

As to worst dub? Well…
Evangelion: I suppose you could pass this one by as being old, before companies like Funimation popped up who really cared about Voice Acting, but I don’t buy it. I dont like Evangelion much, and part of it is the shoddy dubbing.
Detective Conan: Or, in the US, Case Closed. I actually enjoy this show, but I really, really hate it when a Dub company takes it upon themselves to translate an opening song. It. Just. Doesnt. Work. Funimation is the number one, if not only, company that does this. The Dub itself isnt too horrible, but that opening song makes me cringe. Both of the ones I have seen, anyway.

You know what really pisses me off concerning dubs? How sometimes the character’s speech stops at random intervals, because the dubbing company wants the voices to work with the mouth flapping. You’d think they could just pay the animators a little more to slightly change the mouth flapping; I’m sure it’d be easy, and you’d get a better result in terms of voices.

Why are you getting an attitude or calling people elitists for watching things the way they prefer to watch stuff?

Most action anime gets a good to decent job done, as does the high budget stuff, but when it comes to more "cutesy" stuff, I’ve never seen a dub I enjoyed. If other people like it, that’s awesome for them, but I’m sure not going to watch something that grates on me when I can switch out an annoying voice for a really endearing one.

I do wish more stuff would get subbed in the way of really good fansubs, with notes when it comes to cultural stuff so that the translation can stay as close as possible. I’d rather have a reference to an old Japanese tv show explained to me than have the joke changed to something else. I get why they do that with dubs, but it seems like it’d fit really well into subtitled dvds.

I find the logic of that argument similarly flawed. Simply declaring a dub is unlistenable just because of a character’s voice is anything but a legitimate argument. Now granted if it seems like an odd choice to the character it’s understandable, but if the acting is there, then its not so problematic. I know people have preferences, but sometimes this just goes too far. I’ve found that half of the dubs I’ve heard people say are "unlistenable" are not bad at all and that dubs which people say are good are not so much so. So you really can’t take any of these arguments seriously.

Seriously? People watch anime for entertainment. Why should anyone have to argue the reason they’re not entertained by something. Personally, I get very picky about acting in anything I don’t watch for camp. I’m not picky at all about animation, I know other people who found shows I think are great unwatchable for that reason. What reason is there for people to watch anything for entertainment if it’s not entertaining them, especially if an alternative that entertains them more is out there.

People should watch whichever one they enjoy the most. I can’t believe people are actually debating this. =/

I think for me the best dubs I’ve seen would be probably the International Dub of Teknoman, as well as the Theater Dub of Princess Mononoke. Close contenders for great dubs go to Cowboy Bebop, and the movie versions of Battle Angel Alita and Armitage: Poly Matrix. As for BAD dubs, geez..where to begin? Naruto, One Piece and Sailor Moon are the obvious stand outs. But by far is the current promotional video doing the rounds for Pretty Cure. Protips Guys! Honoka is NOT a Jewish Holiday. Fuckers.

Ugh. So glad to know I’m not the only one who hates the Azumanga dub.

I grew used to it after a bit, but in the end the original Japanese is funnier anyhow.

And I love the Death Note dub. The evil laughs by the Japanese voice actors scared the bajeebus out of me. T__T

I don’t care what you people say, I like the Naruto dub!! My favorites are Bleach, Fullmetal, and Naruto. I don’t see enough other shows to have a good opinion, but I also liked the Card Captors dub, Samurai Champloo, and Cowboy Bebop.

Sailor Moon is so horrific to me that I don’t care what the original sounded like. Poke’mon wasn’t very good, and Sonic X is probably my worst.

I really wouldn’t mind if Initial D only dubbed the voices to make it English, but they took out the Eurobeat music as well and put in some crappy ass hip hop shit and horrible rock. They have orchestrated music as well, but only a few of them were good. They should’ve kept the music the same and only dubbed the voices.

Best: I’m rather fond of Gankutsuou and Le Portrait De Petit Cossette. Escaflowne was fairly decent as well.

Worst: HOMG SAILOR MOON. Usagi’s voice was terrible. Ugh.

but Persona 3 has one of the best dubs I’ve ever heard.

The worst dubbed anime is anything dubbed by 4Kids Entertainment. They just stink at dubbing. Only once or twice have they kept anything intact, which is very rare.

For the people saying the Sailor Moon dub is the worst, I have to disagree. I liked some of the background music compared to the Japanese (the DiC dubbed seasons anyway). As for the Cloverway dubbed seasons (S and SuperS) although they tried to keep most of the story intact, and the music intact, I have to agree that Usagi’s voice was horrible.

One Piece is the worst butchering job done to any anime i’ve ever seen. And i’ve seen a lot of bad dubs.

That’s pretty dumb, considering that most jokes that won’t translate well in dubs wind up being pretty lame in subs also, due simply to the fact that there has to be three lines of text on screen explaining the cultural significance of the gag in question, totally killing any potential humor.

Eh, I really enjoy seeing jokes explained. I love it when fansub groups do little "pop-ups" at the top so that I can get the original reference. I definitely don’t mind learning more about something, and I don’t usually find changed cultural jokes very funny.

It’s really not that relevant to this though, since when it comes to licensed stuff, things hardly ever get explanations included (I do see it a lot with manga, though).

Hrm. Cowboy bebop was well done. FLCL was disappointing.. the male dubbing voices were excellent I’d have to say, but they did the females all wrong (Haruko, Mamimi, etc.). Bleach is actually pretty good too. Putting my detest for the coined term "soul reapers" aside I think they were spot on with the voices. Samurai Chemploo was pretty good as well. Hmm..Worst dubbing.. I’d say One piece. 4kids have no talented actors in their agency and I’m sure everyone knows it. All older anime that was dubbed back in the day wasn’t very good either. Too bad we can’t talk about Video game dubs.

Best done english dubs I’ve come across so far would probably have to include Blood: The Last Vampire, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Wolf’s Rain, Howls Moving Castle.

As for the worst. It’d probably have to be Yu-Gi-Oh.

I sit down to watch and "WTF" is all I can say to how bad the dub was. Good: Naruto (jap), Eva (jap), Full metal alchemist (both), Full metal panic (both),Trigun (eng.), Samurai 7 (both) and gundam Seed and some of the 0080th MS team, and some of the later gundams. their are others but i tend to be snooty about dubbing since i have been watching them since the 80’s and have seen the acting go from okish to amazing in some cases.

I thought the voice acting on Evangelion was pretty good actually.

well , i understand were you are coming from. it wasn’t god awful. It’s just as i said. i tend to be a bit of a snob about it. and some of the supporting characters suck. ritsuko and Gendo i think had better voices in the Japanese version. that’s it. it wasn’t like it was horrid. i just want to see what the new ova’s sound like. and i am for once ( cause usually i don’t ) in favor of the Japanese track over the English? odd. trust me i find it at odd’s with my usual feelings but if you have the chance watch eva in Japanese. it just fits better with characters like gendo and others. But that’s just personal opinion.

Best Dub ever… bible black. The dubbing was sooo bad it was good. This is the first time I actually laughed at bad dubbing. I reccomend everyone to wtch it even if you aren’t into hentai, just listen to the horibble-ness.

Worst english dubs for me are Rockman (yeuch), Digimon Frontier and usagi in Sailor Moon.

I think Elfen Lied was really bad Jap. version was way better.

Bleach is good, and FLCL is waay better in eng.

I think Pokemon had an alright dub in terms of voices, but the localisation was horrible; "When you have rice, you make doughnuts!"

Best dubs? I thought Chobits was good, Cowboy Bebop was very good, and I reallyenjoyed Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, some people were put off by the southern accents, but as someone pointed out earlier in the topic, the southern american accent is the western equivalent of the osaka dialect used in the original version. Alos, they handled the localisation really well, only changing cultural references where there waslittle chance of them being understood, and the equivalent references they made were well chosen and phrased in general.

Well, the one thing about dubs that we should be grateful for its that they are windows to the originals. I would not have know half these shows if they weren’t dubbed, good or bad.

I would say for the worst dub the original 4Kids handling of One Piece, but that’s too obvious. Battle Arena Toshinden, that was…inexcusible.

I’d have to say all dubs suck – with the exception of Full Metal Alchemist because they actually took it seriously, it wasn’t just for kicks and giggles or money. I’m not sure of subs though because I never had a reason to get one with subs since Japanese is my second language.

What you’re saying may have been true 10+ years ago, but dubs have come a long way since then, and most high-profile shows that are released now tend to be competent, with a few even being noticeably better than the Japanese counterparts.

Every season of Digimon after the 2nd was terrible. I don’t think there really was a "good" season of SD. And Megaman EXE was plain stupid.

The anime Cybersix had a REALLY good dub job, as it was actually made in conjunction by Canadian and Japanese animators. It translates equally well between English and Japanese, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a Japanese version.

Dragonball Z, the voice acting is pretty cheesey, but I have heard some of the original Japanese and tbh I prefer hearing "KAMEHAMEHAAA….TIMES FOUR!!" in English.
FMA was good too, the voices weren’t annoying, I actually watched half the series in English before being forced to switch to subs, which was quite weird to get used to for the first couple of episodes.

Bad dubs: Bleach. My god some of the voices, they’re terrible, I think the worst has to go to Inoue though, she is just so high pitched and her voice is just plain annoying.
I wasn’t even considering watching it in English anyway after having seen 140+ episodes before even discovering there’s actually a dub out there, but still, I suppose it’s amusing just to see how bad it gets when you meet more of the characters. Japanese ftw.

Unless you watched something other than the English version, this is a really dumb claim. In the English dub, only the insert songs in episode 13 were changed. The opening and ending stayed the same.

Personally, I find that the Hellsing Ultimate OVA #3 english dub (preview) gave most of the Wild Geese operatives higher pitched voices than in the original Japanese version… it sounded somewhat strange to me, but that’s my opinion.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist ~ Pretty much the pedigree: the standard that all dubs should follow. The actors took the material seriously and most importantly – sounded like they had fun doing it.

2. Cowboy Bebop ~ Perfect choices for the characters – I couldn’t imagine them having any other voices. Blum is a master.

3. Excel Saga ~ Another top notch effort on the part of a cast that took the job seriously but still had a great time – Hell – the original English VO for Excel blew out her vocal cords during taping and they had to replace her! PAIN FOR ART!

4. Berserk ~ I couldn’t imagine this dark medieval fantasy in Japanese.

5. Witchblade ~ Misane sounds hotter moaning with pleasure in English than she does in Japanese. Plus – there were a few lines in English that had were funny as Hell: “What the crap?!” and “What, this douche bag?” Plus – the other characters started calling Misane “Melanie” on account of her huge breasts. Being an English speaker – this running joke translates better than others.

James / Meowth from Pokemon: I LOVE these two. Just to hear these two talk was the only reason I would ever watch Pokemon. Shame that Adam Blaustein got a sex change and couldn’t do Meowth anymore. ( Also the reason he couldn’t do Lezard in Valkyrie Profile 2 ::cry:: )

The best dub I’ve seen so far would be The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – The sub version was just so brilliant I was worried if the dub would be crap. Turns out that it was dubbed very well and the voice actors fit their characters perfectly. I also have to say that the Lucky Star dub was done really well since it can be hard to transfer cultural jokes and gags to another culture; for this anime they did it perfectly.

A dub that really disappointed me was Air. The voice acting wasn’t THAT terrible but it just didn’t fit with the characters. There wasn’t that intense emotion I felt when the anime tells the story in Japanese than in English but I still cried in both.

I never thought Sailor Moon or Pokemon to be really bad dubs. Probably because I grew up watching the English version. Though I can point out thier silly mistakes like "Nothing beats a jelly-filled doughnut" when its a riceball in Brocks hand; or the infamous "sandwich" replacements -.- Though the english version of pokemon has quite alot of changes that it confuses me when I watch the Japanese version.

And they want to get into Tokyo U?), and didn’t trail off into places it shouldn’t have. I could go on and on about it.

Baccano’s Dub is fantastic. As is Mushi-Shi, Gurren Lagann, DeathNote, One Piece (FUNi), and Pani Poni Dash. All of those are fantastic.

I believe that the quality of Dubs now-a-days have gotten much better. But there are always some sub-par ones.

Generally, I have found that…now adays at-least, the best dubs come out of Texas. That’s most stuff from Funimation (FMA, new One Piece re-dub, Ouran, Darker than Black), and some from ADV (Full Metal Panic, Excel Saga, Evangelion) (though there are exceptions to this rule).

New York (4Kids & CPM) spits out crap most of the time (original One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh, Slayers) (although I really did enjoy the original Pokemon dub).

Vancouver (Ocean Group) is hit and miss with dubs. Death Note was ok, but they produce lots of unsavory stuff too.

And most everything else comes out of LA…and is CRAP frankly. Most is done through Bang-Zoom and Viz. Even their best cast dub, Gurren Lagann, truly makes the ears bleed compared to the Japanese (I swear my friend and I couldn’t bear to watch more than an episode or so of it). Naruto’s dub is horrid. Bleach’s is just as bad. And everything else from there is down-hill from that. The only exception are a few older titles (Cowboy Bebop mainly).

So next time you look at a dub, look at the label on the box, the director, and the cast so you can determine the company and the city you’ll be hearing.

Yeah Funimation generally makes good dubs, I’m not too familiar with the other dubbing companies though…

Pretty much all the anime I started on was on TV and dubed. I’ve never bought any for myself or anyone else until recently so I was never exposed to the hole sub vs. dub thing so I have no "subs only anything else is garbage" or "I can’t understand non-English need dubs" view on things.

I DO think that most of the time the original Japanese voice work is best but that doesn???t mean the English dubs can???t have a certain charm to them. Like Tenchi, pretty cornball but even without nostalgia it???s still charming.

Or like how English Gendo is actually more interesting and nuanced and how Misato???s actress did improve as the show went on.

And then there???s Kenshin, the dub is often way to cheesy at times but the fact that Kenshin sounds like a girl in Japanese pretty much kills the hole Jekyll/Hyde aspect of him.

As for what I think has the best english voice cast it’s got to be FLCL.

Sailor Moon – Reason (coming from a Sailor Moon fan): as mentioned in the quote below – There were 200 eps in the original so basically over 30 episodes were out (including the entire Stars)

This is one of my favorites, but the dubs just raped everything beyond comprehension. I have never seen anything that changed so much between translation that it was completely unrecognizable, but this one just takes the cake.

Let me start with the DiC dub…

First of all, they cut about ten thousand episodes out… That was just ridiculous. Sailor Moon wasn’t meant to be a show for five-year-olds, but they canned every single episode that had anything derogatory in it. Of course, that’s probably for the best. I would’ve hated to see the editing they would have had to go through.

Now for the names… Amy, Raye, Mina – Ami, Rei, Minako = Just fine… And then we have LITA… WTF? Who names someone Lita? And then there’s the completely retarded name they gave the Dark Kingdom- "Negaverse." What the hell is a Negaverse? Let’s just make up everything we can, yay!

Another thing, no one could ever just "die." Everyone had to disappear or something else. Because people never die, everyone knows that.

Oh, and on the subject of "Molly", what the hell was up with her accent? No one in Japan has that accent…

Oh wait. I forgot. DiC thought they had to completely erase any evidence that the series took place in Japan. They cut out scenes that had any type of Japanese characters on signs or anything. My question is, umm… Why? What was the point?

There was one good thing about the DiC dub. Usagi’s voice in the beginning was spot-on. Too bad that first VA only lasted about 10 episodes and then was replaced by the horrendous Terri Hawks. *throws up*

Now for the Cloverway dub. They at least didn’t cut out every episode that had a bit of violence, and that was a good thing. The thing that killed it for me was the terrible voice acting, namely Usagi’s and Ami’s. They were TERRIBLE! How did the girl who did Usagi’s voice get the job? She sounded like she was choking to death.

Oh, and "This is the most difficult challenge planet power has ever faced." What?! What the hell is planet power?!

One more thing was that Sailor Jupiter’s attack changed with every episode. Her attack name completely changed at random for no reason. I never understood any of this.

Well, that concludes my rant. Here’s a summary- Sailor Moon’s English dub was completely awful. 😀

I prefer the japanese dub of Azumanga Daioh but I don’t hate the English dub. The reason they gave Osaka a southern accent was to show that she has a different accent then the rest of the cast. There have been several anime dubs that do this and they will often use an American southern accent to represent an Osakan one. I’m not saying that your dislike of it is wrong I’m just pointing out something you might not have noticed.

as far as English dubs

every and all english dubs there are very few exceptions, but they are swimming in a sea of fails.

The one and only time when I’ve preferred dub to sub is: ‘The Heroic Legend of Arislan’ (or Arslan Senki). But that’s probably just prejudice coz the cast were mainly made up of English actors!!

When I looked at the cast-list, one of those actors was none other than Jason Isaacs (best known for playing Lucius Malfoy in the HP films). Classy!

Mind you, they use well-known film/tv actors to dub most of the Ghibli films and a lot of those dubs have been sucky anyway. So it’s no guarantee.

Worst would be anything by 4kids (‘cept Pokemon) and Sailor Moon.

i think the dub of yugioh turned out ok but the rest i agree on but the worst for me is Dragon Ball Z Kai i know its closer to the manga and what they call filler is cut out but i like the filler describes the characters skills, backgrounds and attitudes better but kai has such different lines uttered by the characters that i feel like vomiting plus i dislike the voice actors being changed if that was still the same Dragon Ball Kai would have been watchable but not since they changed the voices

They changed about four voices for the better. Plus, the acting has drastically improved. Dragon Ball Z Kai is hardly the worst Anime dub.

You want a bad dub? Try Spider Riders. Not a very good anime (but not one of my worst), but it got torn to shreds by 4Kids. I hate that group.

Best dub? Vision of Escaflowne. That anime just rocked, and still is one of my old favorites.

Cromartie High School has the best dub.

As for the worst, for me, aside from some obvious 4Kids offenders it’s usually only one or two character voices that end up annoying me whereas the rest of the cast can be great. So the worst character voices for me are:

one of the best dubs i have watched (and I’ve watched a lot of Anime (Used to be subbed but got tired of reading and watching at same time but that doesn’t mean i won’t watch the JP version) ) is Dragonball Z (And Z Kai). And as much as I and A lot of people don’t wanna admit it 4kids version of Pokemon was classic Pokemon USA screwed up big time…

Dragon Ball Z had a great dub but Bleach doesn’t? That makes no sense.

Anyway, the best dub I have ever seen was Cowboy Bebop though that’s the answer for many people that I know. Many would argue that it’s better than the original version and I would have to agree with them. The worst dub? I would go with the standard 4Kids One Piece but I’m going to give them a break and go with Sailor Moon just because I can’t think of a good enough example at the moment.

I definitley have to agree with Cowboy Bebop having the best dub. My reasons of it being the best is Steven Blum and Beau Billingslea (Spike and Jet), I cant possibly imagine better voice actors for the two. The dub is pretty consistent and doesnt have a lot of wtf moments that happen in most dubs.

Best for me would be Gurren Lagann, for Kamina mostly and Inuyasha.
Worst would be salior Moon (Usagi sounds as though she’s aged by fifty years) and the "other" Cardcaptors dub (Not the Animax asia one, that was pretty good)

Midori no Hibi – The voices are perfect for every character.
Saishū Heiki Kanojo: Another Love Song – Mizuki’s voice is strong and beautiful but it doesn’t sound like a lesbian, perfect.

Worst:

Bishōjo Senshi Sailormoon – Thanks to DIC (english dub) a lot of people hate the anime.
Ojamajo Doremi – They talk like dwarves or something similar, I have to watch it in other language (except english).
Papa to Kiss in the Dark – Mira’s voice is annoying but his "Oh, mmmh!" sounds so real and gay that everyone can forgive the voice actor…
Tokyo Mew Mew – The only voice that I liked is Lettuce’s, I can’t stand Ichigo: terrible character, terrbile voice.

What’s wrong with the official one? I prefer the manga anyway. I don’t hate all the voices, but Osaka’s and Chiyo’s drive me batty. I do love Yukari, though. And Nyamo. But I love both Luci and Monica, so that’s that. 🙂 The Sailor Moon and InuYasha dubs are pretty terrible (although I do like Richard Ian Cox). I’m also not a huge fan of the Please Twins dub.

Best, I’d say Fullmetal Alchemist (although not a big Al fan in either one. Kinda want to punch both of them when they whine ‘BROOOOOTHER’) or Fruits Basket. I don’t like the way they translated some things, but the voices are genius. Kenshin wasn’t too shabby either.

I’ve found I tend to really dislike dubs if I heard the Japanese version first. Cowboy Bebop was def good. DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, and other Toonami shows weren’t bad at the time. Just about everything I’ve heard after I originally watched subs I’ve hated. Steins;Gate comes to mind.

– Death Note (L’s voice is better than in japanese)
– Full Metal Alchemist (way better than the japanese)
– The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Kyon is voiced by Crispin Freeman! Fav voice actor!)
– Howl’s Moving Castle (love Howl’s voice especially)

Worst:
– Laputa Castle in the Sky (I can’t stand Pazu’s voice! He’s supposed to be a kid not a grown man!!).
Also I can’t stand pretty much all of the Ghibli dubs, none of the voices fit the characters.
– Elfen Lied is horrid too
– Naruto (except Itachi, ’cause he’s voiced by Crispin Freeman! Fav voice actor!)
Also Millennium Actress, Steins Gate, Origin: Spirits of the Past (the whole anime was pretty crap anyway), Great Teacher Onizuka…

The one I always found the worst was Macross II. I love all things Macross/Robotech and when it came out lo so many years ago, I was so excited. As I was watching it, I started to wonder if they grabbed people off the street to record the dialogue b/c that voice acting was rough!

Is it only English dubs? If so Macross: Do You Remember Love? is one of my favorites.

I like the latino dub to Knight of the Zodiac, even if it’s filled with errors.
