ALEXANDER NEVSKY film score by PROKOFIEV

Arguably, the greatest collaboration of filmmaker and composer was that of Sergei Eisenstein and Sergei Prokofiev on the film Alexander Nevsky. This was Eisensteins first sound film (1938) and he invited Prokofiev to write the score. Prokofiev had just made a trip to Hollywood, spending a considerable amount of time on the Walt Disney sound stages (remember Peter & The Wolf?), and had even been offered a job to join Tiomkin, Rozsa, Steiner and Korngold in the pantheon of Hollywood film composers.

What is musically important about the stunning success of Alexander Nevsky is that it is a true collaboration of composer and director wherein the music became an organic part of the film experience.

Ironically, the best film score ever written was probably one of the worst ever recorded. Partly because Prokofiev decided to experiment with the industrys new soundstage recording techniques, the soundtrack was a disaster.

Fortunately we have a modern reconstruction with state of the art equipment, reproducing the magnificence of what is probably the greatest film score ever written. From the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov here is the first complete recording and a new 320kps rip of

Oh yes, yes yes… This is MAGNIFICENT. If you’re in the slightest bit interested in film, television, game, or any other kind of media music, you really need to listen to Alexander Nevsky. Its influence is still heard today.

Particularly if you enjoy the film scores of James Horner, you’ll find Nevsky VERY interesting indeed… 😉

Even if you never see the movie, even if you don’t know squat about who the composer is, even if you don’t think you like symphonic music, LISTEN TO THIS ONE! And tangotreats is right. Horner learned some of his chops from listening to Nevsky.
