Zidane- Strong and could steal to get some of the best items in the game plus thiefery can hit 9999 after some use.
Steiner strong and and very usingfull with swordmagic
Viv-i strong magic 😛
dagger/gernet/sarah- strong with summoms plus can heal
freya- strong plus can’y be hurt when the air and has the ability to heal. perfect character all way around
quina- very usful can hit 9999 everytime, can heal and has meny other ability’s
eiko- strong white magic and can use sommons plus can heal
amerant- very strong and possibly the best healer in the game
Can’t stand the name Garnet, but love the character. Hair hacking, FTW. Haven’t seen anything that great since Rachael in Blow Dry xD
The other character who turns out to be particularly helpful for me is Quina. But his usefulness in battle depends on how well his Blue Magic collection is built up.
Early on, Freya is the one to look towards for usefulness. She gets Reis Wind early on, which heals while Dagger is out of the team, and later on is Dragon’s Crest, which does awesome amounts of constant damage. She also has nice HP and MP stats, in addition to both HP+ and MP+ abilities.
Midway through the game, my big player is Amarant, since Chakra rocks the world by being able to restore HP and MP in one swipe. Plus, like Zidane, his HP grows nicely along with his high defense and strength stats.
I agree with Kurohime, early on, Freya’s Lance ability is priceless, and Quina’s Blue Magic comes in handy when you’re caught in sticky situations.
Towards the end of the game, I almost always rely on Zidane, Eiko, Quina and Amarant to do the most damage, but Vivi and Steiner are also very capable of dishing out some serious damage. The only character I found to be irrelevant was Garnet. Eiko can do pretty much everything she can, and she’s better at it, too.
I like Freya and her abilities too.
Steiner’s not very useful if you don’t have Vivi in your party.

1) Garnet is useless compared to Eiko. Seriously, compare their abilities and you’ll see what I mean. You’d be crazy to prefer Garnet over Eiko, in battle.
2) Steiner is most definitely not useless without Vivi, seriously, do you have any idea how much damage he can dish out?
Eiko is definitely more useful if you need her support magic. She’s defintiely the better white mage. Being able to raise more than one KO’ed character in one turn with Phoenix = GOOD. Being able to cast a party-wide reflect/protect/shell spell with Carbunkle = GOOD (I don’t have to waste ability stones with Auto-reflect or use four turns to cast magic on everyone). Double-casting trance = FRIKKEN’ HELLYEAH!!!
But, since I usually only need Eiko’s magic on special occasions and Bank Holidays, and would rather have my mages killing things, I tend to use Dagger a lot more than Eiko.
My point being Eiko is no more useful than Dagger is. 😉
Fine, you don’t think she’s any more useful than Dagger is, but I do, and I still think that Garnet is useless in battle compared to Eiko.
YOU LIKE GARNET, AND I LIKE EIKO. Whatever shall we do, my dear? xD
2) Steiner is most definitely not useless without Vivi, seriously, do you have any idea how much damage he can dish out?
Well it’s just my preference to use Garnet. And sometimes, I take the character’s appearance into consideration on choosing the composition of my party. My reason’s pretty shallow, but it has a psychological effect on me and my gaming.
As for Steiner, I know he can deal major damage but when I’m in a battle I really like mixing things up so I like having Steiner always with Vivi. And maybe the phrase "not very useful" isn’t the best description I could have given.
Well if we’re gonna do parties 😀 Zidane, Amarant, Dagger, Vivi
eiko like healing stuff good but once i gets auto-regen/auto-haste near end of game whatnot no need for healing really like no need so like steiner like damage big and i am like HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I AM BIG PAPI HOME RUN then like freya i think dragon thingie do like 9999 so quina frog drop like 9999 like thievery like 4325 or whatever i like whatever this game is not as dope as Suikoden 2 though that is no disrespect suikoden 2 too great to compare imo
Freya is good too,,, her magics can so lots of damage
Zidane: steal is an awesome ability because it gets you some amazing items.
Dagger: I love summons and the fact that she has so many helps. Plus the added bonus of white magic….
Steiner: He definately does some major damage. When you add magic to the mix though, I’d be scared….
Vivi: 1) He’s cute! 2) I must have a thing for magic. Plus double Black Magic while in trance? Sign me up!
Freya: Her jump ability is extraordinarily useful. But it hasn’t saved me yet…so I’ll refrain from judgement.
Eiko: She has a lot more white magic than Dagger but her summons don’t do as much damage. I’m out to kill!
Amarent: I don’t use him enough to really know his strengths.
Quina: Yet again, I don’t use hir enough to know hir’s strengths and weaknesses.
Zidane, Dagger, Steiner, and Vivi tend to be my party though.
if u have pumice wquip it to dagger and she gets the ark summon which kiks ass (not in damage it loks cool)
Vivi-keep focusing for approx 5-10 turns, then flare or whatever
Dagger- keeps vivi alive, maybe summon
Steiner-doomsday sword.
All of this will beat any boss!
Go Vivi!!
1 – he can steal great items against bosses;
2 – he is a well balanced fighter so you can have him deal a great amount of dmg and he’s also able to endure alot of dmg.
3 – for me the most important – his trance ability, definitly the strongest trance user – when I first played the game when all my other party members where down, zidane in trance mode alone defeated most of the bosses.
Its a shame not every character could equip HP & MP plus abilities, Vivi died a lot towards the end of the game and i was about level 85-90.
I just had garnet on standby and also indirect magic such as shell regen and haste.
Zidane – Freya – vivi – Eiko or something like that.
And I tend to say that either Vivi or Freya are the most useful, Vivi (obiviously) because he is a black mage, and Freya because of the skills, and one time (during the last battle I think) it actually saved me that I had her in the air becaus all out of a sudden the boss nuked my party (forgot how he did that, but it surprised me. a lot.) and freya was still alive. 🙂
Hes just got such a powerful attack speciall during disk 3 for me anyway hes just so useful! 😀
In terms of utility, Amarant is by far the best. He can do pretty much everything well, depending on how you set his abilities. He can play the tank and smash face, he can do a bit of magic (No Mercy!), he can heal (Chakra and the healer ability), and he’s fairly fast, unlike Steiner.
If you want sheer power, than Zidane is clearly the best. Thievery’s the cheapest (MP-wise) of the auto quad-9 attacks, and failing that, Dyne isn’t anything to sneeze at, either. He’s also your fastest character, which means MOAR BEATZ WIT THIEVERY!1!
Quina is very useful too, white wind is the best heal magic of the game!
I like her not only for her healing, but her powerful summons were quite useful too.
My main part was Zidane, Garnet, Eiko, and either Steiner or Vivi.
yea sryy !!!it seems my ‘s’ is not working well …..
I found Vivi to be the most useful character in battle. His trance magic is AMAZING.
1. Jump – Freya can temporarily leave the battle and effectively dodge attacks.
2. Varied skills – she can do huge damage and even heal the entire party. She also has a good speed stat I hear.
Garnet is a good support and offence magic character, but her summons can take long with boost on especially Ark. has basic-advanced curative white magic, and most of status afflicting white magic. Her trance sucks in my opinion but trances aren’t that important. Can deal good damage with Tiger Racket. So-so HP, high MP. Key Skills: Odin, Bahamut, Curaga, Life.
Eiko rivals with Garnet. Has better White Magic but weaker or situational summons, can have better stats through Marcus/Eiko glitch and has a trance that enables two white magic spells in one turn (double healing, dispell, status affliction, holy). Garnet benefits from Rackets more than Eiko. Low HP, high MP. Key Skills: Curaga, Holy, Dispell, Carbuncle, Phoenix, Fenrir, Full-Life.
Vivi is the best magic offence character in the game. Low HP, high MP. Trance, like Eiko’s enables two black magic spells in one turn (19998 flare 🙂 ) weak to reflect and reflect x2 is very costly. Doomsday, a great way to beat Ozma :). Key Skills: Flare, Doomsday, Meteor, Bio, Comet, F/B/Tga, Water.
Quina is the blue mage character of the game and as a blue mage, is both great in magic and physical attacks. Has great support and so-so healing magic, situational and constantly used magic attacks and good physical attacks which can benefit from counter. Trance sucks after obtaining all blue magic spells, easy lvl up and gil gaining and good HP and MP. Key Skills: Frog Drop, Limit Glove, Auto Life, White Wind, Angel’s Snack, Level 5 Death, Mighty Guard.
Amarant is a character with great physical attacks and abilities that can help the party. His trance is extremely useful making all his flair skills target all enemies or allys. Has unique/interesting Throw ability but is kind of useless later on. Chakra heals both hp and mp. Amarant has the ability to revive characters. High HP, low MP Key Skills: Aura, No Mercy, Revive, Chakra.
I have a feeling this is way too long so ill stop now 🙂
My party at the end was Zidane (’cause you can’t remove the monkey), Eiko, Freya and Steiner. 6289 dmg, then heal, then 9999, then 9999 🙂 Pwning bosses, here we come. XD
