Mana series

Ever since I saw screen shots from legend of mana ive been interested in the series and im going to by the games that are coming out for PS2 and DS.

Can someone make a history of the series for me cause i want to make sure i know whats going on and which games i should emulate.

I don’t know anything past Secret of Mana for the SNES, but I enjoyed it quite thoroughly. I actually have my copy, complete-in-box sitting right next to me 😀

Yes and it’s all nowhere near as good as Secret of Mana.
Well, I suppose Seiken Densetsu 3 is pretty good.

I strongly recommend Seiken Densetsu 3 (a.k.a. Secret of Mana 2). It’s a great game even though it’s a bit linear. One cool thing about it is that you can pick any three of six characters to proceed through the game with when you start a new game. You will fight different final bosses depending on which character you pick first before selecting the other two who become your companions.

What the fuck happened to this legendary series? It was once the rival of a final fantasy, dragon quest or phantasy star. Now, I could care less if a mana title drops tomorrow. I still wouldn’t even consider giving the gameplay a glance.

They stopped concentrating on it to deal with FF7 sequels, those bastards!
Oh well, all we can really do is wait for something good to happen to it.
Children of Mana sucks, I own it. I’ve gotten sick and tired of having to go through 6-12 monotonous levels of monster bashing just to get a key item or level up. It’s just the same stuff over and over again. At least the animated intro and story sequences are pretty to look at. The BGM is alright as well. I hope Dawn of Mana and Heroes of Mana are better, and I have yet to finish Sword of Mana.

Don’t play Children of Mana.

sil’fur, your list is correct, although you probably should put down Final Fantasy Adventure for the GameBoy into the list as well. Also it is worth noting that you left out Sword of Mana, which was released for the GBA (although this is practically a re-make of Final Fantasy Adventure which serves to retcon the series’ arc and distance it from the FF series it spun off, according to Wikipedia).

As for Dawn of Mana, yes, it’s out. I saw it at a gamestop on my way home from work yesterday.

The list of the mainstream Mana titles would probably look something like this:

I’ve always loved this series. I’ve had the opportunity of playing Dawn of Mana over the past few days, and I gotta say, it’s excellent in the sound and story departments with fine voice acting and great music, everything translates well into 3d, especially the enemies and character detail, but the game’s basically worthless if you’re looking for gameplay. Think Kingdom Hearts with a HAVOK engine but executed in such an awfully underpolished and linear fashion (dungeon-crawler with resetting stats after each chapter) it sadly gets annoying to play. An utter contrast to Legend of Mana, which was fun as hell.

I saw someone say Children of Mana wasn’t worth it. What about Sword of Mana? Worth the time?

Sword of Mana is fun and worth the time. BTW, how is it a FFA remake? I’ve played FFA a little bit but dang, it’s soo different. Not even the gameplay is similar. I find it to be more like SD2 than FFA.

Don’t forget Heroes of Mana for DS, RAMChYLD. (Apparently going to take on a more RTS twist) Should come out in a couple of months. Honestly, I can’t wait to see what this’ll be like.

I too am quite a fan of the series (evident in my avatar pic). Played Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 (and like FFVI, actually won it dozens of times – lots of replay value in it) and Legend of Mana. Looking forward to getting the rest.

Argus: I think it’s a full rewrite. Apparently, they based the story on FFA, but everything else is redone.

Honestly dude, SOM kinda bored me and I stopped playing it, especially after picking up SD3 and SD4.

I played my mom’s old copy of Secret of Mana once and it rocked. I was a bit disaponted by Children of Mana…..The one for the ps2 looks good though…….

I’m not too fond of the Seiken Densetsu games after Seiken Densetsu 3 because after that they made the difficulty laughably easy, especially in Sword of Mana and Legend of Mana.
