Game update 6 horus?

I have just installed FFXI, spent about an hour registering every form, filling in bits and bobs, finally I try to play, it wants a game update…

It says the update is going to take 6 hours. Is this normal behaviour?
The time is decreasing, slowly. Nothing else is downlaoding and im the only computer on the network

I tested downloading right now from symantec site for definitions update, it downloads at over 400k a second

the game is uhhh 3-4 years old, when playing MMOs the later you buy it the more add-ons they put in it. Meaning the more you have to d/l.
