From what I recall, it takes a fair while, but the ranks don’t actually matter. What matters is digging up components to power up the Experiment in Chapter 5 and also, digging up certain Key Items, some of which are only available in the areas that don’t become accessible until later on. You’ll want to dig a little in the early Chapters just to get started, but you don’t want dig too much in the earlier Chapters because you need to beat the Experiment at least once before it’s at its max levels and then repair it in order to get the full completion percentage. Well, that’s if you’re trying to get 100% in one playthrough, anyway, something I actually don’t recommend.
