Hi
Just wanted to say that I dont hear much from people regarding who I consider the god of beautiful and melodic ost music – Koichi Sugiyama. Has anyone heard the orchestral /symphonic versions of his Dragon Quest music. Its timeless. Just would like to make some Sugiyama san friends.
Thanks
Cristobalito

I believe Koichi Sugiyama has been composing music for Dragon Quest since the very first one for the NES, and from what I hear, he’ll continue to do so until the day he actually dies.:p

Yes, your right. He just finished Dragon Quest VIII a year or so ago and since then has been doing the Symphonic versions around the world. I believe he is highly respected by the musical community because he seems to be easily commisioned to by some pretty busy and high class orchestras. Like London Sinfonia of London for example.

I loved his work throughout the DQ games, I can’t wait to hear what he comes with on the DS and Wii and whatever other platforms the franchise ends up on in the future.

Does Dragon Quest have any recurring or important themes? I might be going to a DQIX concert in Tokyo Aug 5th, which is the date when the OST is released, so I can’t prepare by listening to the soundtrack.

Otherwise I would like to hear some comments about DQ music in general.

Hi. I’m a musician myself and without a doubt Koichi Sugiyama’s work is brilliant. He writes music in the symphonic tradition; broad, heavily melodic tone poems with tight, but gorgeous, orchestrations. Yes, there are plenty of recurring themes, as well as motif’s. It is mostly slow music, but always sweet and I’m sure you will enjoy the concert. Its classical music for a game, which is the stuff Japanese composers always do better than us yanks. Hope that helps.
