Final Fantasy, as you said, pretty much ranks up there as the most popular.
Other Square titles, such as Chrono Trigger/Cross seem to take up quite a position as well. Others that you may not think of included Donkey Kong Country (I, II and III) as well as the Sonic The Hedghog series.
I often see Castlevania ranked highly as well, along with Devil May Cry.

Mario’s series are unforgettable, should also be ranked pretty high, possible for Zelda next up. Other high rated: CastleVania, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear

I think Silent Hill has quite a large fanbase, but I personnaly don’t like it. FInal Fantasy and Sonic are the most well known in terms of VGM.
