Blitzball Tournament – An error in the first one?

I just noticed something whilst looking up a question to use for my FFX Gillionair and found that Wakka says:

"We’re playing the Al Bhed Psyches in the first game"

Followed shortly by:

"We got seeded, 2 wins and we’re the champions"

Is the structure of the tournament not:

FINAL WINNER = GROUP A WINNER vs GROUP B WINNER

GROUP A WINNER = GROUP A SEED vs GROUP A OPEN WINNER

GROUP B WINNER = GROUP B SEED vs GROUP B OPEN WINNER

GROUP A OPEN WINNER = GROUP A OPENING MATCH TEAM 1 vs GROUP A OPENING MATCH TEAM 2

GROUP B OPEN WINNER = GROUP B OPENING MATCH TEAM 1 vs GROUP B OPENING MATCH TEAM 2

Meaning that to play in the opening match for either group and be seeded is impossible. I looked at it and though about it, but I can’t get my head round a logical explanation, anyone else see the same as me or is it just me?

I see, It cant be the first match because the al bhed psyches must have already had a match.
Being seeded is coming in to the tournament after the first round

Round 1 Group A V Group B And Group C V Group D
Round 2 Winner 1 V Seeded 1 And Winner 2 V Seeded 2
Then Winner 1 V Winner 2

Yeah, that’s what I couldn’t understand. If they were facing the Al Bhed Psyches in the first game, they wouldn’t have been seeded. This is just confusing me though. I’m wondering if it was meant to imply "We’re playing the Al Bhed Psyches in OUR first game" rather than "in the first game"

I never noticed that, maybe it was a translation error.

it was either an error or blitzball do ‘being seeded’ diffrently and its random who’s seeded. it never happens again in the game so i think its just an error

I reckon he was refering to their first game. Doesnt seem like an error to me.

For those who are having a problem understand the diagrams, here’s a rough example of what should happen. (Please note these are not spoilers, I am just making this up)

Opening Match:
Al Bhed Psyches vs Guado Glories
Psyches Win

2nd Match:
Kilika Beasts vs Ronso Fangs
Fangs Win

3rd Match:
Besaid Aurochs vs Al Bhed Psyches
Aurochs Win

4th Match:
Luca Goers vs Ronso Fangs
Goers Win

Final Match:
Besaid Aurochs vs Luca Goers

Notice the first time the Aurochs play would be in the third match, against the winners of the opening match. This is why a seeded team cannot play in the opening match, and why I am so confused.

It must be an error somehow, either way it doesnt seem to matter that much

Well since it took like over 6 years for someone to realise, I don’t think it matters much.

You know, I think I have a vague memory of finding something about that whole thing being a bit weird too, but I don’t think I ever quite pinned it down at the time. That whole opening tournament thing is a bit weird compared to how blitzball is structured later in general.
