Hi. I’m curious as to what the general FF shrine community’s opinion is of different genres of video game/anime music. I’m asking around to find what songs might be worth listing to, and its a common practice of mine to play a game before I listen to its soundtrack. And… I don’t get video games too often. 🙁 My perefence lies with techno, orchestra, and japanese-style tunes. Ayone else have an opinion..? I’d love to hear them, along with any soundtrack suggestions.

What a broad question. There are really ALL types of tastes here. Personally, I generally dislike game rips. I never much liked any anime until I started playing super robot wars. Then I realized that the Gundam series had some of the best music in the world (NOT GUNDAM SEED – IT’S HORRIBLE). Make sure you check solidsnake’s massive compilation of Square-Enix Osts (due to some legal wrangling they’re only available via direct links on forums and not at gh).

There’s so many remixes and other media available at GH. Check out the Shin Megami Tensei series. It’s an amazing game with outstanding music that never made it big in the U.S. but was a huge hit in Japan.

I concur – most gamerips are inferior to OST’s or arranged soundtracks. I’ve tried the Shin Megami Tensei series, too (played a few imports as well) and I like it. The more recent games are shifting to a more rock-oriented taste, that’s less favorable in my opinion, but still serviceable.
