Not sure how many of you are aware of this but now you can play your PS1 game backups on your PSP full speed. The new custom firmware allows a lot more then that, Functionality of 1.5 and 3.02, so homebrew, emulators, and now PS1 Games (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Dark-AleX-s-3-02-OE-B-released-/pg/49/aid/77278) backed up and encoded with popstation (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Some-PopStation-GUIs-to-make-your-lives-easier/pg/49/aid/77333) (yes… popstation). You have to install the 3.02 OE-A (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Custom-Firmware-3-02-OE-A-released-by-Dark-AleX-/pg/49/aid/76935) firmware before updating to 3.02 OE-B but its a rather simple process. Pretty much Sony’s poor little PSP has been hacked up every which way. Theres a downgrader for TA-082 now that actually works. The system which was previously locked out completely. Great time to own / buy a psp.
If you check out this video, you can see sony get owned as this guy, and others including myself are busting out games like Final Fantasy 7 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=m9ilBs3k6wo) to our memory sticks while Sony intentionally delays new releases. Why pay again for games you already own, I wonder.

So if you are already on 3.02 OE-B and are playing your own PSX Isos, OR if your on 1.50 still and haven’t made up your mind heres the finishing blow.
Now we have iso compression and are able to compress PS1 games (really well I might add). Same steps as updating to 3.02 OE-B.

Theres been a update to 3.03 OE-A’ This new update will allow you to run Full Screen (i.e. 480×272 AVC MP4 videos) on the PSP.
Fix’s (from 3.03OE-A’ to 3.03 OE-B – # Patched the firmware to allow decrypted mp4-AVC videos to play at 480×272 resolution.
# pic0.png was not shown in psp isos. Fixed.
# The speed functions were not dummied after setting the speed. This could cause the few games that set the cpu speed not to run at the selected speed in the recovery menu.
# Changed the structure of the program to have more free ram in game mode.
# sysmemp.prx removed, systemctrl.prx splitted into systemctrl.prx and vshctrl.prx
# Docmaker also now allows for 1000 png (images) to be used rather than the previous 100
Update: 3.03 OE-B (http://pspupdates.qj.net/3-03-OE-B-Released-Movie-Madness-/pg/49/aid/78858)
—————–
You can pick up this update (which you must build) [here (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Dark-AleX-s-3-03-OE-C-Released-/pg/49/aid/80540)]
# AVC videos bitrate limit patched. The firmware limited the bitrate of avc videos to only 768 Kbps. OE now forces the limit to be 16384 Kbps. (Note: this doesn’t mean than the psp can handle such a high bitrate, this means than they won’t show error. I don’t know which is the real maximum bitrate than the psp can handle at full speed)
# Speed of OE boot is now ~3 seconds faster than previous versions. (without plugins)
# CPU speed of XMB can now be changed.
# Wifi can now work at 333 Mhz!
# Added access to flash 0 and 1 via usb in the recovery menu, based on the great idea of USBSSS by Booster. Note that writing is enabled, so this is intended only for advanced users that know what they are doing in each moment.(It is not a great idea to change anything from the kd folder). Because of this addition, the rest of flashing options were removed.
# PSP isos can now be deleted as any normal memstick games. (also the size of the iso now shows fine when you press triangle->information).
# When formatting memory stick, GAME150, GAME303 and ISO directories will be automatically created!

Download 3.10 OE-A (http://pspupdates.qj.net/3-10-OE-A-custom-firmware-out-and-about/pg/49/aid/81676)
* Change from 3.03 firmware to 3.10
* 4th level of brightness (aka battery eater) can now be selected also without ac adaptor.
* Changes in hen core:
o Static user elf’s can now be executed in the 3.10 kernel. (this includes snes user version between other programs)
o Tyranid’s patch (added in 3.03 OE-C) consequences was not explained very well in the changelog of 3.03 OE-C:
* For programmers: it allows kernel modules to have user imports, making kernel programming in 3.03/3.10 less strict.
* For users: plugins and applications that worked in 2.71 SE, but not in OE, *may* now work in 3.03OE-C and 3.10 OE-A.
POPS-related important note:
The plugin to load 3.02 pops won’t work anymore in 3.10 OE, due to some changes in pops modules structure (meaudio fused with popsman, idcanager/idmanager behaviour slightly changed). A new plugin for 3.10 could be written next week.

Download 3.10 OE -A’ (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Dark-AleX-s-3-10-OE-updated-to-A-Rev-2-/pg/49/aid/81935)
A2 release is a small update which fixes a simple bug in games like Metal Slug 6 and the others. This bug was because the static ELF wasn’t being patched correctly in some cases.

It is perfectly legal to run any program you want on any personal electronics, and if you are converting games that you have bought legitimately, it’s not like you are stealing anything.
The Homebrew community just happens to use the PSP better than Sony itself does.
It is not illegal in the slightest if you are creating ISOs of games you already own.
Do some research you stupid fucking nigger.
Also: I fully support this and am looking forward to a downgrader from firmware 2.81 so I can then upgrade back to 3.02 OE-A and then to 3.02 OE-B.
Now I can move all my ISOs to the MemorySticks my friend gave me =P
Unfortunately, if you’re playing MGS:PO, it means you’ve got 3.02 installed. You need to have firmware 1.5 to upgrade to 3.02 OE-B, and unfortunately there are no downgraders for 3.0+ firmwares as of yet.

I know the laws, and I know you can backup any game you own. And i know itsnot illegal to emulate them on the psp. But I dont think people will caare of this, instead they will download ISOs and run them on their psp. Thats what i wanted to point, that many will use downloaded ISOs just like ROMs, without owning the games.
I`m currently playing games that i missed or never got around to playing.
Now I play the waiting game.
1. Open Firmware 2.71 Eboot in PBP Unpacker.
2. Extract the DATA.PSAR file somewhere on your PC and move it to the root of your Memory Stick. (On helper PSP with 1.5/2.71/2.71SE/3.02OE firmware)
3. Extract and run the latest PSARDumper on the helper PSP.
4. Press Circle when in PSARDumper to dump encrypted without sigcheck and dump reboot.bin.
5. Once the DATA.PSAR file has been dumped, move the newly created folder to the PSP which you want to downgrade.
6. Obtain the Downdater from 0okm and use the noobz team’s xLoader to run the Downdater.

I just realized… it is a 2.80 downgrade.
I am at 2.81
=[
The second I do I’ll let you know 😉
(On a tiny update note they have TA-079 – TA-086 PSP downgrading ok. Basically theres a PSP-1004 TA-081 motherboard that now works in a minor update to yesterdays news – same post as before)
Same here. I’m on 2.81 firmware and want to do this.
I really want to try it, but I can’t afford to replace my PSP if it bricks 🙁

edit:
Oopps sorry for the double post. Will there be any available downgrade for 2.81?
No clue, I’m not involved in this particular area of PSP hacking. However, it’s quite a delicate process, many PSP’s fall for the cause. (when "testing" firmware, be very careful what you flash) =)
The sound is a little messed up, though. I saw some program that would supposedly fix it…but you needed the .ccd files which I almost always deleted :(.
All in all, this is a really cool release. I really like being able to play Ehrgeiz again because my friend stole my copy. One of my goals I have never been able to accomplish is to use Cloud’s omnislash in that game.

All you have to do for that is button mash, that has no skill whatsoever.
Are you serious? Holy shit you’re right! It IS easy!
I found a perfect way of doing it:
1. have cloud’s buster sword sheathed
2. Face your opponent and be directly next to them
3. Hold Guard
4. Starting at the top, rotate the D-pad 360 degrees clockwise
5. Hold High and Low attack.
But seriously…the game is button masher friendly.
Well that’s true but keep in mind, the psp also has an analog stick whereas the psx did not. So to use R2 and L2 you can customize it. I personally use
Right on the analog stick = R2
Left on the analog stick = L2
but there are 4 or 5 other configurations as well such as
analog up+R1=R2
Analog up+L1=L2
etc…
Happy to help, sorry I didn’t get back with you sooner, but with today’s development maybe it was for the best. The new downgrader really sounds like it is the way to go.

edit: (added to original post (Thread 35245) – with the new "Full Screen" custom firmware 3.03 OE-B [an update to 3.03 OE-A’])
"Apparently, a lot of people have been bugging for a stable, secure, and easy downgrader for 2.80 firmware. Well, the Noobz team never ceases to impress us and has released just that!"
Supposedly this modified downgrader reduces the risk of bricking your psp and makes it much easier (no searching for files needed for the operation).
I’m thinking it’s worth the risk of ruining your psp; particularly if it’s still under warranty. I bricked my psp using some questionable appz two times at Wal-mart’s expense. The seamless emulation makes it all worthwhile.
http://pspupdates.qj.net/Improved-2-80-Downgrader-released-by-Noobz-/pg/49/aid/79297
It works with any psp. Identify your motherboard first though if you’re downgrading from 2.80 or above.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, PM me and I’ll gladly walk you through the process. It’s simple and allows every emulator to be played such as GBA, SNES, WSC, PSX, etc…
Simply put, if you’re at 1.5 firmware, it’s a matter of installing a file and you’re set.
Um, how do I do that?
Alternatively, have a gander at this article
http://psp.about.com/od/homebrew/ig/TA-082-Motherboard-Tutorial/TA-082-code-photo.htm
Now if you see IC1003, then you have the aforementioned, cursed motherboard. If, however you see IC6001 or NOTHING AT ALL, you’re able to downgrade without hesitation.
The code is printed on the motherboard when it’s created. The first batch of psps that were released with firmware 1.0 JP; 1.5 US. These ones have the good motherboard (IC6001)that completely supports flash writing (downgrading and reinstalling firmware). The other one has write protection that can cause errors.
The most common error is that a flash writing program, like the downgrader, will receive an error midway through deleting the current firmware. The result here being a psp with only fragments of firmware. You can turn it on, but you’re left with a black screen and no functionality. Murder.
Until recently this was the case, but Dark_Alex has found a workaround that increases the success probability. He disabled the system security checks on the flash temporarily while it is written to. Thus, now TA-082 motherboards can be downgraded.
Is it supposed to be backwards or something? Because I noticed "I" and "C" were mirror like. If it helps, I got my PSP last year on Christmas.
If there is writing on the right side there’s a slight risk of bricking.
It’s very hard to see, especially if it’s the good motherboard. The only reason I know mine is safe is because I can see the top of the 1 at the end. If you see what might look like the top of a 3, you’ve got the cursed motherboard. You NEED a good light source to see it. It’s very small and it’s behind the perforated metal UMD holder.
The motherboard writing is written in gold. I don’t think you’d brick it even with the cursed motherboard. But if you want to be safe, keep waiting and even more reliable downgraders will be released. But the PSP is a failed system without UMD/psx emulation.
Post a pic (hi-res) of your psp with the tray open if you want me to determine it for certain.
You’re a lucky man, then. You’re at 2.50 firmware now, right?
Just confirm your firmware, please. Because as of now, I’m pretty sure the best thing to do is upgrade to 2.71, then downgrade to 1.5, followed by installing Dark_Alex’s custom firmware OE-B (allowing psx emulation).
According to pspupdates.com, some of the changes are,
more bitrates playable in AVC playback,
psp loads 3 seconds faster after being rebooted,
USB support for popstation (using gameshark codes with psx),
intelligent handling of large ISOs in (even faster load times),
Wifi works at 333 mhz.
Now, personally, I’m wondering if this will do 2 things: fix the glitch where the Suikoden 2 freezes during boss battles, and will it allow me to play wifi using psp ISO images.
Supposedly Fanjita’s now hard at work finding a way to downgrade 2.81 psps as well. So expect that rather shortly.
http://pspupdates.qj.net/Dark-AleX-s-3-03-OE-C-Released-/pg/49/aid/80540
(this means you, now pretty much anyone who owns a psp can downgrade ^_^ )
Requires unpatched GTA:LCS to downgrade, also you are able to use the HEN to run 1.50 homebrew on 3.03, however I imagine some features would be crippled.
1. Update to firmware 3.03. If already have this firmware then proceed to step 2.
2. Open the 3.03 downgrade file and copy the contents of the folder MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
3. Open the 1.5 update and rename the EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP then copy it to /PSP/GAME/UPDATE/
Make sure not to overwrite PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP
4. Load Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (unpatched)
5. It should get to loading save game, clear the screen, the screen should fill with a light blue color and then reset the PSP
(If this does not happen see below)
6. Check that HEN is running by going to system settings then System Information and it should show up as system version 303 HEN
7. If it is showing up as 3.03 HEN then go to the memory stick and run the x.yz update
8. Before the downgrader does anything to your PSP it will ask for you to agree to what it is doing
If you no longer want to continue press the Right Shoulder Button (R-TRIGGER).
9. Once you have agreed to start the downgrade do not unplug the PSP
10. Once finished the PSP will ask you to press X, after pressing it will reset it self.
11. If it comes up saying that the settings are corrupt press X to continue.
12. Enjoy your new shiny 1.5 PSP.
2. Purchase the game, keep the receipt and return it.
3. Borrow it from a friend who bought it.
also, the GTA games for psp are probably the best ones on the entire system lolz. They actually don’t have excessive load times.
Granted, in Canada, this game is 59.99 and not worth the price, so I just downloaded it like 90% of all my psp games rofl.
Well, yes of course, but as long as you have your psp plugged into an AC adaptor during the process you should be fine.
That’s right. Just post here should you encounter any problems.
And because I’m a newb about sending it in and such, what am supposed to do? Heh, sorry bout this. >_<
http://www.oldschoolgamer.ca/information.aspx?SID=28
You COULD ship it to sony to have it fixed…but…there’s a new firmware out that needs to be cracked. Here’s the problem with Sony:
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
About PSP (PlayStationPortable) Repair Service
Dear Customers,
Please note the below policies about PSP (PlayStationPortable) repair service:
1. Upon completion of the repairing service, the PSP (PlayStationPortable) shall be restored to such original configurations and specifications as designed and manufactured by Sony and the system software shall be upgraded to the latest version. Customer hereby acknowledges his/her understanding that he/she is not entitled to request to keep the existing version of the system software as before the repair service or request to restore the system software to the previously installed version upon completion of the repair service.
2. there is no repair service for all parallel imported products.
So it’s probably NOT a good idea to send a homebrew-ified psp to sony because of their nazi-ism towards potential piracy. If I were you I’d look for a third party refurbishing organization such as the one listed above that won’t fuck with your firmware and deny you the right to enjoy your purchases.
I live in the USA and it’s $45 to send it in for the repairs. Does the PSP still have to be under warranty and will the cost rise depending on what has to be done?
But keep in mind you’re dealing with a business that thrives on word of mouth; to stay in business they need to be as good as sony.
Wow that really sucks. Sorry to hear it. I know you can get replacement screens off eBay also which might be cheaper since you have to install yourself. It’s honestly not that hard to replace the screen so if its a big price difference I would suggest doing that. I’ve done it before so if you decide to just get the screen itself, I can point you to a number of install tutorials.
edit: for example heres one of the SHARP screens (http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SONY-PSP-SHARP-LCD-SCREEN-REPLACEMENT-REPAIR-PARTS_W0QQitemZ250081970940QQihZ015QQcategoryZ1225 16QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). These are rumored (and do somewhat from my experience) have better lighting dispursement and brightness, then the other screens Sony uses in the PSP. Not sure what brand screens repair companies are replacing broken screens with, but you might try requesting a sharp if they have them.
editedit: You can check out the PSP I modded (http://www.qj.net/index.php?pg=49&aid=59914) (and a tutorial for putting LED’s in the triggers). It shows in the 3rd Pic what your going to be dealing with if you decide to replace the broken LCD screen yourself. As you can see, its only 4 clips and a few screws to get into it. Nothing too major. Anyways, good luck.

Note: A few new custom firmware releases have been released, scroll down to the end of the 1st post for updates (Thread 35245).
God damnit, what about downgrading from 3.1 (I don’t know how the fuck that happened, I charged it up over the weekend because it’d been sitting and it started up with that firmware)?
Send me a PM when that one gets cracked. 🙁
Send me a PM when that one gets cracked. 🙁
Thats some crazy stuff there, auto update? never heard of that. Anyways, devs have released a working decrypter for the PSP’s 3.10 firmware, so the chances of a downgrader coming sooner then later are increasing.

EDIT: I just checked them from ebay and all of them are $38.99+$9.99 USD S+H charges and up. So it’s all more than just sending it in for $45 at that one place.
No.
I wasn’t aware of 3.10 and assumed the latest version was 3.03 when I got around to upgrading to attempt the downgrade/custom firmware process (what I get for not reading the fine print on the download when I hit network update).
The magazine Retro Gamer gave Dark Alex a good write-up anyway! Keep going mate!!! can’t wait for a 3.10 downgrader!
I have a 2.80 PSP, the 2.80 Downgrader, Dark_AleX’s 3.10 OE-A firmware upgrader, and a copy of the firmware 1.50 EBOOT.
I really want to play POPStation – particularly Vagrant Story – but honestly, no matter how awesome these guys are at making firmware, their instructions in the Readme completely suck. If anyone can give me a step by step (and I mean baby steps) instruction to the downgrade/upgrade process, I would be in your debt.
However, you need a copy of GTA: Libery City Stories to run the downgrader.

First you need to be running OE firmware in the firstplace before upgrading to 3.10 OE-A, i think, but i have 3.02 OE-B running on my psp and it works for the games ive popstationed so far.
So if you know how to downgrade to 1.50 then do so, if not heres a guide

Then you need to upgrade to 3.02 OE-A, heres a guide on that
http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about60396.html
Then just update to OE-B, heres where to get it

And heres all the other updates that follow

Everything you would want to do and know should be found in the Tutorials section at psp-hacks.com
Something tells me that if you can’t properly type your question that nobody here will be able to help you.
I have to get ready for work now, but I’ll be upgrading to 3.10 OE-A tonight (after I find a detailed walkthrough for the setup – I don’t want a brick on my hands now).
EDIT: Upgraded to 3.10 OE-A with no difficulty, thankfully.
I can’t find popstation now, though – everyone seems to already have it, but I can’t find where to download it! It’s pretty frustrating that there isn’t better documentation on what OE-A actually does – apparently it can run ISOs and PSX EBOOTS, but damned if I know how 🙁
In the games folder of your MS, make a folder called
SCUS00000 <– the numbers on the folder don’t matter.
Copy your Eboot, and Keys in there. (the keys are automatically generated by popstation so don’t worry about that)
NO, IT CANNOT RUN PSX ISOS AS IS.
however, if you have the tools to convert the psx isos, it’s quite simple. The problem is that they’re a little bit tricky to find (because you need a copy of hot shots golf for the online console)
Fortunately for you I’ve posted my converter. This converter will convert .bin, .iso, and .img files to eboot.

That is how it should look in your psp ms. You can have as many of them as you can fit.
Take a look at this
I’m not a hacker, nor do I know anything about emulators. If someone could post some step-by-step instructions for what I need to download and what I need to do I’d really appreciate it.
Also, can this be done on a MAC? Cause I’m not using windows. thanks for the help!
Firmware = System software
I’m Version 2.60

Have a look at that guide. You’ll probably need a flash light to get a good look at your psp. If you don’t see the numbers on the psp motherboard (behind umd case), you’re safe.
You need to upgrade your psp to version 2.71
http://dl.qj.net/Firmware-2.71-PSP/pg/12/fid/8046/catid/163
put it in a folder called update in your psp\game directory
so the eboot.pbp should be in here:
e:\psp\game\update
Again, I really appreciate the help as I couldn’t do this by myself O.o
I feel your pain. The first thing we need to identify is the current firmware of your psp and the date of purchase. And the firmware it came with.
