PSP Custom Firmware 3.02 OE-B = PSP Hacked to play (almost) any PS1 Backups

… not to mention homebrew, isos and compatibility with 1.5 and 3.02 features.

Not sure how many of you are aware of this but now you can play your PS1 game backups on your PSP full speed. The new custom firmware allows a lot more then that, Functionality of 1.5 and 3.02, so homebrew, emulators, and now PS1 Games (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Dark-AleX-s-3-02-OE-B-released-/pg/49/aid/77278) backed up and encoded with popstation (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Some-PopStation-GUIs-to-make-your-lives-easier/pg/49/aid/77333) (yes… popstation). You have to install the 3.02 OE-A (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Custom-Firmware-3-02-OE-A-released-by-Dark-AleX-/pg/49/aid/76935) firmware before updating to 3.02 OE-B but its a rather simple process. Pretty much Sony’s poor little PSP has been hacked up every which way. Theres a downgrader for TA-082 now that actually works. The system which was previously locked out completely. Great time to own / buy a psp.

If you check out this video, you can see sony get owned as this guy, and others including myself are busting out games like Final Fantasy 7 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=m9ilBs3k6wo) to our memory sticks while Sony intentionally delays new releases. Why pay again for games you already own, I wonder.

It is perfectly legal to run any program you want on any personal electronics, and if you are converting games that you have bought legitimately, it’s not like you are stealing anything.

Because 3.02 OE-B is a modified version of the official 3.02, you can play any game that needs it.

Unfortunately, if you’re playing MGS:PO, it means you’ve got 3.02 installed. You need to have firmware 1.5 to upgrade to 3.02 OE-B, and unfortunately there are no downgraders for 3.0+ firmwares as of yet.

I know the laws, and I know you can backup any game you own. And i know itsnot illegal to emulate them on the psp. But I dont think people will caare of this, instead they will download ISOs and run them on their psp. Thats what i wanted to point, that many will use downloaded ISOs just like ROMs, without owning the games.

Yay, now i have a good reason to buy a PSP (if i can get my broke ass the money for one). I was gonna get one when they announced the PS1 game downloads, but when you have to buy the games you own again, hell no.

No, it doesn’t. 2.80 means 2.80, and that’s only for certain motherboards.

No clue, I’m not involved in this particular area of PSP hacking. However, it’s quite a delicate process, many PSP’s fall for the cause. (when "testing" firmware, be very careful what you flash) =)

Rumor said that kernel access for 2.81 was patched well by Sony, so it’s quite impossible to be hack. . .

I’m using custom firmware 3.03 from Dark Alex right now. It’s really quite good. I have to mention, though, the controls on the psp just are NOT as good as the ps1/ps2 controller. The way I hold my psp makes it more difficult to hit the O button. This isn’t really a problem when playing rpgs because they require very little actual skill. But for games like Megaman X5, I kind of wish we had a reverse remote play option with ps3 so it could play your psp games on your TV.

The sound is a little messed up, though. I saw some program that would supposedly fix it…but you needed the .ccd files which I almost always deleted :(.

Are you serious? Holy shit you’re right! It IS easy!

I found a perfect way of doing it:

1. have cloud’s buster sword sheathed
2. Face your opponent and be directly next to them
3. Hold Guard
4. Starting at the top, rotate the D-pad 360 degrees clockwise
5. Hold High and Low attack.

That works for all the characters, except it’s a throw for the others.

But seriously…the game is button masher friendly.

Read some of the other posts dude, the downgrader for 2.80 at the moment has a high brick ratio. I don’t think you want to ruin your PSP, so just keep an eye on this thread in the event that one is released.

Well that’s true but keep in mind, the psp also has an analog stick whereas the psx did not. So to use R2 and L2 you can customize it. I personally use

Right on the analog stick = R2
Left on the analog stick = L2

but there are 4 or 5 other configurations as well such as

analog up+R1=R2
Analog up+L1=L2

etc…

I’m thinking it’s worth the risk of ruining your psp; particularly if it’s still under warranty. I bricked my psp using some questionable appz two times at Wal-mart’s expense. The seamless emulation makes it all worthwhile.

It works with any psp. Identify your motherboard first though if you’re downgrading from 2.80 or above.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, PM me and I’ll gladly walk you through the process. It’s simple and allows every emulator to be played such as GBA, SNES, WSC, PSX, etc…

Simply put, if you’re at 1.5 firmware, it’s a matter of installing a file and you’re set.

Now if you see IC1003, then you have the aforementioned, cursed motherboard. If, however you see IC6001 or NOTHING AT ALL, you’re able to downgrade without hesitation.

The code is printed on the motherboard when it’s created. The first batch of psps that were released with firmware 1.0 JP; 1.5 US. These ones have the good motherboard (IC6001)that completely supports flash writing (downgrading and reinstalling firmware). The other one has write protection that can cause errors.

The most common error is that a flash writing program, like the downgrader, will receive an error midway through deleting the current firmware. The result here being a psp with only fragments of firmware. You can turn it on, but you’re left with a black screen and no functionality. Murder.

Until recently this was the case, but Dark_Alex has found a workaround that increases the success probability. He disabled the system security checks on the flash temporarily while it is written to. Thus, now TA-082 motherboards can be downgraded.

I just looked at my PSP according to the directions on what you posted to see what model I have.
Is it supposed to be backwards or something? Because I noticed "I" and "C" were mirror like. If it helps, I got my PSP last year on Christmas.

What firmware did your psp come with?

I can’t remember. I got it in 2005 along with Initial D Street Stage. I had to upgrade it to 2.50 because that’s the upgrade that came with the game.

Okay, if there’s writing on the Left side of the open umd tray, it’s safe.

If there is writing on the right side there’s a slight risk of bricking.

It’s very hard to see, especially if it’s the good motherboard. The only reason I know mine is safe is because I can see the top of the 1 at the end. If you see what might look like the top of a 3, you’ve got the cursed motherboard. You NEED a good light source to see it. It’s very small and it’s behind the perforated metal UMD holder.

The motherboard writing is written in gold. I don’t think you’d brick it even with the cursed motherboard. But if you want to be safe, keep waiting and even more reliable downgraders will be released. But the PSP is a failed system without UMD/psx emulation.

Post a pic (hi-res) of your psp with the tray open if you want me to determine it for certain.

Just confirm your firmware, please. Because as of now, I’m pretty sure the best thing to do is upgrade to 2.71, then downgrade to 1.5, followed by installing Dark_Alex’s custom firmware OE-B (allowing psx emulation).

Well it’s a problem now, but it’ll get hacked eventually. From now on, though: never upgrade using sony’s eboots. Even if there’s a kickass game you bought that requires the latest firmware, wait until devhook or custom firmwares come out to emulate that whatever you want to use. PSP games blow when playing from UMD anyway. No load time is the way to go.

New custom firmware available for anyone with DAX’s previous versions. It requires a hefty hour and a half or something to generate the .DAX file this time.

According to pspupdates.com, some of the changes are,
more bitrates playable in AVC playback,
psp loads 3 seconds faster after being rebooted,
USB support for popstation (using gameshark codes with psx),
intelligent handling of large ISOs in (even faster load times),
Wifi works at 333 mhz.

Now, personally, I’m wondering if this will do 2 things: fix the glitch where the Suikoden 2 freezes during boss battles, and will it allow me to play wifi using psp ISO images.

Supposedly Fanjita’s now hard at work finding a way to downgrade 2.81 psps as well. So expect that rather shortly.

Well it’s official -> 3.03 to 1.50 PSP Firmware Downgrader (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Are-you-ready-for-homebrew-3-03-HEN-and-Downgrader-released-/pg/49/aid/80842)
(this means you, now pretty much anyone who owns a psp can downgrade ^_^ )

Requires unpatched GTA:LCS to downgrade, also you are able to use the HEN to run 1.50 homebrew on 3.03, however I imagine some features would be crippled.

1. Update to firmware 3.03. If already have this firmware then proceed to step 2.

2. Open the 3.03 downgrade file and copy the contents of the folder MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.

3. Open the 1.5 update and rename the EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP then copy it to /PSP/GAME/UPDATE/
Make sure not to overwrite PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP

4. Load Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (unpatched)

5. It should get to loading save game, clear the screen, the screen should fill with a light blue color and then reset the PSP
(If this does not happen see below)

6. Check that HEN is running by going to system settings then System Information and it should show up as system version 303 HEN

7. If it is showing up as 3.03 HEN then go to the memory stick and run the x.yz update

8. Before the downgrader does anything to your PSP it will ask for you to agree to what it is doing
If you no longer want to continue press the Right Shoulder Button (R-TRIGGER).

9. Once you have agreed to start the downgrade do not unplug the PSP

10. Once finished the PSP will ask you to press X, after pressing it will reset it self.

11. If it comes up saying that the settings are corrupt press X to continue.

12. Enjoy your new shiny 1.5 PSP.

But I want to do this without having to buy GTA:LCS. That game fucking sucks. 🙁

also, the GTA games for psp are probably the best ones on the entire system lolz. They actually don’t have excessive load times.

Well, yes of course, but as long as you have your psp plugged into an AC adaptor during the process you should be fine.

It means there are different versions of the game apparently. I didn’t know it had gone into circulation twice. Perhaps he meant that it might come out eventually if released as a greatest hit; in such a situation, the downgrader might not *theoretically* work. I don’t think you should be worried about this.

You can check this thread to see if the version of GTA LCS (http://forums.qj.net/f-psp-games-6/t-easy-way-to-tell-is-patched-or-not-gtalcs-58823.html) you pick up is unpatched. I have downgraded then upgraded 3-4 PSP’s using this process over the past few days and had no problems at all. I think you will have good luck as well. Just read over the readme and (even tho It double checks the files for you) make sure you put the right files in the right places. 😉

Oh Christ…my friend bought a brand new psp a couple days ago, It had 2.81 firmware so I think you’ll be fine. Maybe consider getting your old one sent back to sony and refurbished since it would hypothetically save you a lot of money. Man, if it was my cat, I’d rape it.

Well, my system hasn’t been tinkered with at all or anything. Just the screen is cracked. Kinda stupid for them to do all that over a stupid broken screen.

They WILL do it, though. my friend even sent his psp in for a similar reason and password protected his firmware via recovery mode, they decidedly gave him a brand new psp instead with the latest firmware installed. They are nazis.

I sent the other guys an email about my problem. So right now, I’m just waiting for a reply about how I can go about this.

I think screen replacement is a fairly simple procedure. Whip off the old, one and insert the fresh one, and seal it. No internal modifications are necessary, no repairs that are so small that something could be broken. The price was 45 and up so it’s a bit of a shame since it’s probably a ~$10 part to replace. On the other hand, I don’t think it would cost much more than whatever handling fees are associated with that. The PSP warranty has no bearing with these guys whatsoever — unless you were still under sony warranty; in which case it might be voided by them.

But keep in mind you’re dealing with a business that thrives on word of mouth; to stay in business they need to be as good as sony.

I’m still waiting for a reply from them. I didn’t see a number for me to call but I’ll have another look at their site.

But when you do get it fixed, dark alex updated custom firmware to 3.10 :). Many glitches/errors are now fixed. Send another response and wait a couple days. It’s honestly not that hard to replace the screen so if its a big price difference I would suggest doing that. I’ve done it before so if you decide to just get the screen itself, I can point you to a number of install tutorials.

edit: for example heres one of the SHARP screens (http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SONY-PSP-SHARP-LCD-SCREEN-REPLACEMENT-REPAIR-PARTS_W0QQitemZ250081970940QQihZ015QQcategoryZ1225 16QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). These are rumored (and do somewhat from my experience) have better lighting dispursement and brightness, then the other screens Sony uses in the PSP. I wasn’t aware of 3.10 and assumed the latest version was 3.03 when I got around to upgrading to attempt the downgrade/custom firmware process (what I get for not reading the fine print on the download when I hit network update).

Yep! did the same damn thing myself. Just heard about Dark Alex’s sterling work from a magazine and decided to check it out only to find myself going into a rage when I checked which version of the firmware I was using and realised I had updated to 3.10 when my friend lent me Miami Vice to play! (I know! I know!) Now I have another reason to hate that game!

There is a downgrader for 3.03, so if you upgrade to 3.03 you can downgrade to 1.50 (and then upgrade to any of the OE firmwares).

However, you need a copy of GTA: Libery City Stories to run the downgrader.

First you need to be running OE firmware in the firstplace before upgrading to 3.10 OE-A, i think, but i have 3.02 OE-B running on my psp and it works for the games ive popstationed so far.

God damn I was shitting bricks, but I just successfully downgraded from 2.80 -> 1.50.

I have to get ready for work now, but I’ll be upgrading to 3.10 OE-A tonight (after I find a detailed walkthrough for the setup – I don’t want a brick on my hands now).

EDIT: Upgraded to 3.10 OE-A with no difficulty, thankfully.

I can’t find popstation now, though – everyone seems to already have it, but I can’t find where to download it! It’s pretty frustrating that there isn’t better documentation on what OE-A actually does – apparently it can run ISOs and PSX EBOOTS, but damned if I know how 🙁

what do you mean you can’t find popstation? It’s built into the firmware, silly :p.

In the games folder of your MS, make a folder called

SCUS00000 <– the numbers on the folder don’t matter.

Copy your Eboot, and Keys in there. (the keys are automatically generated by popstation so don’t worry about that)

NO, IT CANNOT RUN PSX ISOS AS IS.

however, if you have the tools to convert the psx isos, it’s quite simple. The problem is that they’re a little bit tricky to find (because you need a copy of hot shots golf for the online console)

Hey guys, I’m really interested on playing some of my PS1 games on my PSP. Problem is, I don’t undertstand any of this.

I’m not a hacker, nor do I know anything about emulators. If someone could post some step-by-step instructions for what I need to download and what I need to do I’d really appreciate it.

That’s not a problem at all, buddy. Starting off though, tell us the firmware of your psp. All the firmware related stuff is processed right on the psp so I don’t thing windows is necessary. Just look on your psp system’s settings and tell me the firmware you have to get things started.

Where do I find what my firmware is? I looked in system’s settings and all is has listed in my MAC address, my system software, and my nickname.

Have a look at that guide. You’ll probably need a flash light to get a good look at your psp. If you don’t see the numbers on the psp motherboard (behind umd case), you’re safe.

It’s the same. It just allows the psp to run psp and psone games right off the memory stick. Additionally, it allows all emulators such as SNES, genesis, gameboy advance etc…it’s a bit of a long process though. But I think anyone who’s completed it agrees that it’s definitely worth it.

yes. There is a recovery function added to the firmware that allows you to press R button while the psp is loading to allow you to downgrade at any time.

I have never done it myself, but in the previous pages, there have been links posted that direct you to different sites that have directions on how to install the firmware (along with the firmware itself) and such. I haven’t seen the guy that talked about it and helped people out on this topic in a while and I’m not sure if he’s still around. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to wait and see if he responds.

I feel your pain. The first thing we need to identify is the current firmware of your psp and the date of purchase. And the firmware it came with.
