Doesn’t it go into the Key Items section of the inventory? That shouldn’t be full at all. Did he just tell you about it, or did he actually give it to you?
BTW – Do you have the PSX version or the SNES(NES?) or an emulation?

They tried to make it more realistic, not realizing that it’s at least as hard to carry 99 of the same body armor rather as it is to carry one potion and one phoenix down.
And don’t ask me how a character can carry a cabin, but not more than a set number of other, much smaller items.
