I recently found out that I get to play contrabassoon when the orchestra I’m in performs Gustav Holst’s famous work, The Planets (sans Neptune, we don’t have two full choirs for it ; ; ). Because of that, I’ve been listening to them a lot more than I ever have before and just now was wondering what my favorite was, and I find it really hard.

I think I honestly like "Mars", "Jupiter", and "Venus" all equally, with the second tier of "Mercury", "Uranus", and "Saturn" all equally in second, then last "Neptune" even though it’s good. Which is kinda funny, cause that’s how Holst wrote them – my top three first, then took a break, then wrote the other four.

Which is your favorite planet?

If I had to pick just one, I’d go with Mars, by the way, simply for Super Mario Bros. nostalgia.

Jupiter without a doubt. Every single time I hear that start up, I can’t help but be absolutely brought to attention or something. It’s what made me even like Holst to begin with.

The ending to Mars is genious. Holst is truly the most metal composer of all time.

Venus is very beautiful, I think. Jupiter’s a good tune when you’re happy. Saturn has a really great part with the bells or cymbals clashing in the middle. Uranus and Neptune aren’t that great imo.

Jupiter for me as well. That song become my love when I saw it performed a few years back in MS.

I’ve got to go with Jupiter as well. Like Kouketsu said, the start up is just amazing.
